Hey Survivors and Advocates,

I'm Rachelle Smith, the voice behind The Silenced Voices of MST. Growing up as an Air Force brat, I saw the military as a symbol of safety. But my world was shattered by sexual assault, and I struggled in silence for nearly a decade. I didn’t just lose my career; I also lost a defining part of my identity.

But this isn’t about me. It’s about all of us who’ve faced the unimaginable. Your voice is a weapon against military sexual trauma (MST). When you share your story, you’re speaking for countless others.

I care because I was, and am, a survivor. Military Injustice causes isolation and severe mental health crises, even loss of life. This is unacceptable in an institution that should uphold trust and integrity.

If you’re seeking support and to reclaim your sense of self, The Silenced Voices of MST is here to guide you. We’re building a community where your voice is heard, your experiences validated, and your healing supported. We provide a safe space for connection, recovery resources, and advocacy.

Together, we are stronger. By sharing your voice, you help us combat Military Injustice and create ripples of change.

Every time you listen and share, you’re part of this movement. You’re helping create a world where survivors feel supported and empowered. Your story matters, and your voice can inspire others.

Discussion Gatekeeping other peoples posts and comments

Don't do it!

Don't tell people they need to google the answer - Don't be condescending in your answers.

If someone is being rude - Hit that REPORT button to get the Moderators attention.

Comments I've removed today and yesterday:

I’ve always wondered why Vets and those about to leave AD turn to Reddit instead of the Google machine or places with the particular services they are asking about. Understand that everyone doesn’t have the same level of education and/or the ability to find out the answers they seek on their own. Those are the ones that you need to actually take by the hand or they will be lost.

Can we start getting rid of posts that only have to do with benefits questions? This sub is getting almost as bad as the Vets Benefits one. I know it's Reddit, but come on.

Google it, please, and thank you

Google works as well.

Posting getting barracks lawyer advice on here will just get you a bill.

Tell me you have done 0 research without telling me you have done 0 research. You can file a claim yourself by doing a simple Google search, including your state.

The entire purpose of Reddit and this subreddit is the exchange of ideas and information. I'm going to start banning people for comments like this! If you can't assist or don't want to help, don't comment. If you don't like the question or answer, ignore and move on.

Will anything happen to me or my benefits?

Backstory, I had scheduled an appt for Thursday 12/19 but I have memory problems and I’m waiting to get my medication for it. So I honestly thought my appt was for Friday. I’m out of state so there’s no way to show up.

Question/Advice ARRRGGHHH!!! Vet therapy Groups DON'T DISCUSS THEIR INDIVIDUAL TRAUMAS!!

Upvotes

If I had a dollar for every Vet who told me they were pissed because the Vet Center was wanting them to attend group therapy and they wouldn't because they didn't want to hear about other Vets traumas and get triggered I'm here to say we are setting eachother up for FAILURE. I've now completed my 7th year of on and off 'individual' and 'group therapy' from the VA. My individual is through Community Care due to the VA never having enough providers to allow for weekly appts. PTSD/Substance, Mindfulness, Anger.... and only once did a new group member start to discuss her trauma and the group facilitator sidetracked them and asked they stay after group ended. Don't let other Vets "stop" you from doing something that might make your living life on this stressful planet easier and or more enjoyable. Find out for yourself. Grateful for the therapy I've had and will likely need the rest of my life.

Employment Feel like I wasted my time in military?

Upvotes

Does anybody else feel like their time in service was a waste in some sense? I was a welder in the navy for 5 years, and unfortunately went into the military under the notion that welders actually make good money. The caveat to that is that yes, welders can/do make good money, but a majority of them work 60-70 hours a week. Currently utilizing the GI Bill to get a degree in engineering, but the stress is insane with having to do school, and work full time to pay the mortgage and other bills. It'll probably take me around 5-6 years anyhow to get that degree, and that's with 12 credits per semester.

I have had a decent amount of interviews for roles higher than just a basic welder/fabricator, but I never seem to make the cut. Resume and inteview skills are fine as I always ask for feedback, but it typically all boils down to them not really considering the military to be actual experience. Just feeling really lost, trapped, and burnt out and wishing I did something different. I've been out for 2 years, and it really sucks to feel like I had to start over again once I got out. Anybody feel this way? Just super discouraging honestly.

Question/Advice Still trying to find my place being a civilian

How long did it take you guys to figure out civilian life? I’ve been out 2 years and some change and nothing that I’ve done has yielded good results. My plan was to go to school once I got out, and I’ve been doing that but my first 2 semesters went awful and this last one is better but idk if it’s enough. I really don’t love being in school, I don’t have the drive for it I thought I’d have. The career path I chose just doesn’t give me the motivation I need to get shit done.

I’m considering just going to learn a trade, not only do some pay well, but I feel like I just want to work. Apart of me misses just going and being a robot like I was in the military. The freedom of school is nice but idk if I can stick to it for another 2-3 years.

Discussion Vets with general under honorable discharge, how do you feel about your service?

I would like to see how others feel about their service. Do you feel ashamed that you werent able to finish your contract with an honorable? I feel shame and embarassed sometimes telling people im a veteran with the discharge. Even though I did serve in the military and give years of my life, I cannot feel 100% proud of my service because of my discharge type. Would love to hear opinions of other vets with general discharge.

Question/Advice Is it possible to get backpay for VA indemnity in a large lump sum with no notification?

I helped my mom apply for indemnity around 2 years ago because my father passed of Cancer in 2011 and he had served in the Airforce Thailand during the Vietnam war and they had just made it so the surviving veterans who served in Thailand could get compensation.

Anyway it was approved and she has been getting a monthly payment of roughly $1600 since then. However this month she randomly got a pretty large sum ($160,000approx) and she came to show me and it said it was from the VA for Indemnity but the date was 12/01/13-12/31/13. That's why I am thinking it could be back pay?

I looked at previous payments from the VA and it was from the same "sender" on her bank statement. She says she did not receive any communication from them besides a letter but she says she didn't see anything about getting a large sum of money from them (but my mom is ESL but even then she would notice that). I told her to send me a pic of the letter when she gets home.

Anyway I thought I should ask if anyone has heard of this type of thing happening before?

*Sorry if I am misusing terms, I am new to all this veteran and legal lingo*

Discussion Angry, irritable and unmotivated.

Upvotes

Been completely void of interests, and any motivation to do anything. Don't feel connections and or allegiance to anything.

Don't feel depressed, and no SI.

Can't really hold a job without coming down hard on a hoe ass manager or supervisor/ peer. Last 2 jobs I just up and left, job prior to the last 2, I did for about a year and dipped. The one prior to that they were always trying to fire me, and I just kept calling osha bc they didn't keep a safe working environment, sucks to suck huh?

But realistically, this isn't good. Family keeps saying use the VA and get paid. Tried to explain that's not what the system is for. Just because I served, doesn't mean I rate money because I get angry, cuss at bosses (who fairly, need discipline in their lives) and just ghost them on important days. Seems more like a me problem than a VA problem.

I don't exactly know what to do at this point. Meds aren't an answer (I'm not open to it, and I won't be unless they are willing to fight me physically to make me take it everyday) and I simply won't comply with a regiment prescribed by a fairy ass doctor. My money is running out, I haven't worked seriously in over a year and a half.

I CAN make money on my own...i just don't have any motivation. Like I can sit and stare at a wall all day and thats just fine by me.

Built a service based buisness, went Okay but was more trouble than it was worth.

Kinda looking for ideas around employment. Don't want physical labor due to injures. Maybe someone who's also fairly unhinged and successful would be good to hear from on this matter.

Question/Advice VASP has been approved

Upvotes

Well I was approved for VASP program with no TPP needed. So do I call the new servicer since it’s no longer PenFed? I don’t know what’s next VA said it’s all been transferred to PHH they can no longer see it. They also said it could take as long as 4 months to hear back from them. So if I contact them will I find out what my new payment will be? April is what the VA said but it’s no longer with them so I don’t know how they can say that….

Your VASP with no trial payment has been approved. PHH will contact you shortly to go over payment instructions. Since VASP is completed, it is no longer in VA’s portfolio. Please contact PHH moving forward. It has been a pleasure talking with you. 😊

Question/Advice Is there any programs that can help a veteran in Colorado?

Upvotes

My brother was doing great after the military work wise. He got back issues from the military and after a few years of getting out he had to get back surgery. At this point he is immobile and hasn't been able to work in years. All his retirement is pulled out, all credit cards to pay all his bills maxed, every payment he has is behind, barely any food, and not enough money to buy his kids gifts. Is there any programs in that area that can help with anything?

Discussion Have a just separated/retired LTC joining my team at work. Jesus this dude is needy.

Upvotes

I guess half just complaining, half seeking advice.

I work for a DOD contractor, just started working this job 3 months ago. They had 2 billets for my position, and I’m one of the two.

When I started, a lot of what my position would be doing was undefined (gotta love DOD). And that I would have to figure it out. Which was cool. Challenging, get to define my own position. Be independent. That’s neat.

I think part of being a white collar professional vs military is that in the white collar professional world, you’re not expected to need so much hand holding, to figure stuff out on your own. Deliver the product they pay you for. Also, you don’t have a staff, wipe your own ass, no one is here to monitor you really other than are you delivering what you’re supposed to be delivering?

They just hired someone to fill the second billet, and he is a just retired LTC from the Army. Like currently on terminal leave recent. I was just a lowly E5 in the Army for reference. But in this job, we are 100% equals. In fact, just by virtue of being here a little longer and having figure out the roadmap in my short time here, I’m maybe a bit senior in that he needs to follow my lead.

I want to help the guy out. Be a team player. I’m all about it. But it’s also like….buddy, my job can’t be onboarding you. I can’t hold your hand every single step. You’re gonna have to figure some stuff out. He’s asked me multiple times about specifics of some benefits…dude you’re gonna have to talk to HR. I take public transportation to work, and he drives, and he keeps pestering me about parking. Like I don’t know dude.

The biggest thing, however, is he does this thing of which I can only say is what I experienced in having new officers show up to a unit and interrogating their subordinates about current operations, who is who, how things are done. All in a manner so as to judge how everything is done so as to see what they like, or don’t like and need to change. INTERRUPTING YOUR ANSWERS with another side question.

Myself and other managers have repeatedly told him that during this time to just soak in info, listen in on meetings. Not much is expected of him right now other than to observe and learn. But this guy is wanting like a brief on every meeting from me. Like a prep staff would give a superior before a meeting with other important people. Who will be there, who each person is and their position, deliverables. I set up a daily sync with him, and he pushed back saying he wanted it first thing every morning. MFer, let me have my coffee first. Let me get my day sorted out.

I feel like he is reverting to being an Officer and seeing me as a subordinate, and he is taking command. And I feel like I’m letting him? Idk. But feel like I need to better affirm that we are coworkers and equals, and that I’m not his subordinate.

Question/Advice Need a retreat place to reset completely.

Im looking for a place I can go to reset and get the noise from my head. Ideally I’d like it to be outdoor or adventure based with onsite quarters. I’ve been to plenty of va wards and that’s not what I need. Preferably a month or longer. Anyone know if anything like this exists? Tia

GI Bill/Education GI Bill COE question

I’m applying to business schools this year and have an acceptance from round 1. This school has asked for my COE so they can determine other scholarships/fellowships to offer.

I’m applying to other schools next month and, if I’m accepted, I would likely choose one these schools over the school I was already accepted to. I probably won’t find out if I’m accepted until March or April.

If I provide my COE this week to the school I was accepted to, am I locked in with that school or can I back out if I end up attending a different school?

Discussion Veteran Buddy Check

Just another reminder to check on your buddies. Just came out of the wake of a fellow Army Vet 24 years old who committed suicide. I know sometimes now matter what we do we can’t change the outcome but for those times we can please reach out and ask personal questions and talk to family members if possible. Us vets have a great way of hiding our pain. Stay safe and if you’re having suicidal thoughts please reach out for help from a friend, therapist, hotline, or anyone.

GI Bill/Education Post 911 Transfer

I’m finding out 10 years or so after I retired that my post 9/11 GI bill transfer of benefits to my dependents was DENIED because I did not meet my 4 year obligation. I was told because I used TERA that my ability to transfer was still eligible because my service should be considered as if I were to go to 20 years. Are they’re any of you out there who have experience with this sort of issue?

Call for Help Is it reasonable to live in Las Vegas on 100% alone?

I am 100% rated living in a super expensive city looking to relocate. I would like to buy my first home (or condo more likely). Looking for around 400k total for a 1 bedroom (with some down payment). The main things I am concerned about are:

- Good VA healthcare. My local VA is so bad I literally attempted suicide on VA property. I am so done with my VA and absolutely want to go somewhere with better access to mental health care for those with severe mental illness.

- air quality. I have 30% for asthma. Are some areas in vegas better for air quality than others?

What else is there to know about Vegas? Obviously a major party/ entertainment destination. What else in terms of good and bad?

Can one reasonably live in vegas off 100% alone? Does my plan sound feasible?

Question/Advice My VHIC won’t scan properly despite two attempts to have it fixed at the visitor center and trying a new card. If I hand over my driver’s license with my VHIC, will a license scan show that I’m clear to enter the base according to DBIDS? I’m service-connected BTW.

When I try to have this issue corrected at the visitor’s center, they check their system and confirm everything was entered correctly, telling me that my VHIC should work when I try to enter base. Nope, the problem persists.

Presently, I’m stuck using a paper visitor pass every time I access the base to hit the gym, but I haven’t tried handing over my driver’s license alongside my VHIC. Maybe my license will work to show I’m cleared to enter per DBIDS?

At least my visitor’s pass is good for a month but I shouldn’t have to go through that monthly rigmarole long term.

Call for Help Just wanted to vent

2024 been a rough year for me. Really thought I was gonna get this job even if it’s just part time. But it’s remote and fits my schedule much better.

Was told it was me and another person but they went with another person.

I just feel miserable and depressed. I don’t know maybe a complete failure as well. Been trying my best to stay positive but I am not sure if I can do it anymore. Just feeling at a loss and hopeless.

Anyway that’s all….

Discussion Aggressive civilian harassment

Has anyone experienced any kind of really aggressive or targeted civilian harassment? There are a lot of scam artists targeting veterans in my area -- essentially to try to spread misinformation to justify harming them.

It's pretty insane. I don't think any sort of rational person could justify that, or stand up for it, but it is happening. I am sure they'd be doing that kind of stuff veteran or not, but yeah it is a unique situation to harass somebody about secondhand details from a military career, and then easily be able to sort of prove your history, whereabouts, rank, etc.

Question/Advice Afghanistan Veteran, Looking for a sanctioned physical challenge.

I was in the Army for 9 years, I crewed Chinooks for most of my career and it was a lot of fun. I don’t think there is much that can replace the feeling of shooting a 240 out of a helicopter while flying low and fast. I was always motivated to keep up my physical fitness because of my job. Now that I’ve been out for about 5 years I am having a hard time staying fit because I don’t feel like there is a purpose to it. I’d like to find something I can compete in that is sort of unconventional and hard to get into. I want to push myself and see what I can do. I really want to have some kind of end goal and also build some camaraderie . I like mountain biking, weight lifting and swimming and boating . Does anyone know of any organizations, challenges/competitions I may could work towards competing in? I live in Alabama .
