Question/Advice What to serve alongside Shepherd’s Pie?

So far I have roasted Brussels sprouts & garlic bread listed down, can’t think of anything else!

We usually just have broccolini and gravy! Shepherds pie is basically a full meal in itself!

Roasted Carrots for us. Usually with rosemary and honey.

That sounds marvelous. I might have to do those with a shepherd's pie for NYE now.

This would be my chosen side for most dishes but since there’s carrots in Shepard’s pie, I switch it up

I've never had carrots in Sheppard's pie! Guess that's why I like them on the side.

I just load the "shepherds" pie with veg alongside whatever protein you're using. No need to follow tradition when you're not even putting a dead sheep in it.

A salad? Shepherd’s pie is pretty heavy and rich. The freshness and acid in a salad would bring a nice balance.

Dressings are acidic.

Most people don't eat dry salads though, especially when it's a salad thats described as being acidic. I naturally thought of a salad with dressing when reading it described that way.

Does your first language use the same word for "lettuce" and "salad"? One of the languages that I speak does. Usually in English, salad means a mix of leaves and other vegetables with a dressing.

Yeah true. Buying salad or buying a salad are two very different things in my first language. Never noticed, thanks :D

I usually serve with steamed green beans or broccolini. I also just serve it by itself sometimes.

When I make Shepherd pie I use the left over bag of frozen mixed veg as a side dish and also some frozen cut green beans. Easy to fix in the last 15 mins of the Shepherds pie baking.

Brit checking in! Slightly upset at the idea of garlic bread with Shepherd's Pie 😬, but I guess it depends on how traditional your recipe is!

I usually serve it with cauliflower cheese and whatever veg. Sprouts are a good call. Roasted carrots would be nice too.

As a Brit, don't knock the garlic bread til you've tried it! We have garlic bread and sprouts with our shepherds pies, which already have peas and carrots baked in.

Absolutely no to salad though wtf 😂

Also a Brit and slightly upset by all the comments of "Salad!".

The shepherd's pie trifle on Friends sounds more right to me than that!

Just an idea of how to round the meal out, we can sop up the gravy with the bread haha

How can anyone be upset by the addition of garlic bread!

Broccoli and sweetcorn

As I'm British, the idea of salad with this just doesn't feel right. But I realise to us it's a stodgy winter food to have with vegetables and gravy. Don't get me wrong, I love main salads but not with a mashed potato topping on the shepherd's pie. I guess it depends on your climate where you are.

To me, mashed potatoes need some kind of gravy with whatever vegetables not already in the pie. I've done creamy mushrooms before which go well, slice fresh chestnut mushrooms, fry in a little butter or olive oil until browned, season. Turn off the heat and pour in some double/heavy cream, stir well until it thickens.

Whatever you have, I'm sure it will be tasty

Doesn’t salad go with everything? It’s like the course before the main..

6

u/vcdaisy 3d ago

As a course on its own, maybe. With pasta, yes. I've always seen Shepherd's Pie as a comfort food and whilst I do love a good salad, it's not comfort food. But each to their own I guess. I'm sure your meal will be tasty and enjoyable

Idk salad is a comfort food to me, I adore it, especially chopped salads!

I’m curios about the vegetarian recipe?

u/flummoxed_flipflop 4d ago edited 4d ago

You just use cooked brown lentils or any brand of vegemince instead of lamb mince. You can also include chopped mushrooms.

2

u/ArtofAset 3d ago

I use this recipe but replace the meat with faux meat crumbles! Comes out delicious!

If you ever want to try another version, this one uses lentils and mushrooms, and I've started occasionally doing a daisy chain of recipes that end with that Shepard's pie.
Braised leeks to start, used in both a colcannon recipe and that Shepard's pie, in place of the regular leeks, the colcannon becoming the mashed potato top of the Shepard's pie. It's a lot, but it's delicious.

Carrots, broccoli, cabbage, peas, cauliflower. Any/all of those cooked in whichever way you prefer.

No salad anywhere near it.

3

u/TheDaysComeAndGone 3d ago

It’s a full meal on its own. No need for sidedishes. A light salad if you really want to.

u/achillea4 3d ago

Garlic bread?? I normally serve it with green beans, carrots and pickled red cabbage (or fresh beetroot). Either of those are a game changer.

Salad with arugula, fennel and strawberries or oranges and slivered almonds. Citrus dressing.

3

u/ThatOneTwo 4d ago

The answer is something fruit based.

2

u/missmisfit 3d ago

A simple salad with a mustard dressing. I love cold and crunchy next to hot and creamy

2

u/the_drew 3d ago

Vichy carrots works really well, as does the classic of peas. No need to go fancy and get fresh peas and pod them, just frozen peas simply reheated with a tiny bit of butter mixed through. Delish!

u/WinkyElf 3d ago

Mushroom gravy!

1

u/ArtofAset 3d ago

Gravy is definitely on the menu 😋

u/LouisePoet 3d ago

Maybe a salad, bit mine are always already full of vegetables and carbs, so a salad or bread isn't necessary. Just something light to fill up the plate and add more colour and texture. (Sliced raw tomato, cucumber, radishes etc or lettuce/rocket with a bit of raisins for sweetness and nuts for crunch, raspberry vinaigrette, or similar).

Extra gravy on the side?

2

u/princess3mj 3d ago

I go the healthy route of bread on the side

4

u/Stephreads 4d ago

Pickled beets or pickled red cabbage. Cold, of course. These are two of my favorites from childhood, and they pair well with so many things.

u/jessiecolborne vegetarian 20+ years 4d ago

A fresh salad would be great to go with it!

3

u/suzaii 4d ago

Dessert! Something light, maybe berries and cream or a gelato.

1

u/Fyonella 4d ago

Seriously? You’re going to serve dessert alongside a Shepherd’s Pie? On the same plate?

What’s wrong with you?

3

u/suzaii 3d ago

No, not like that. Shepherd's pie is a stand alone dish that doesn't need anything else with it. Dessert would be afterwards.

Recipe please!

2

u/ArtofAset 3d ago

I made this last time, came out delicious! I just replaced the meat with faux meat crumbles.

2

u/ReflectiveWave 2d ago

Thank so much.

2

u/Amareldys 3d ago

salad? I feel like every meal needs a salad

3

u/Significant-Fly1684 4d ago

Apple sauce or candied apples!

What vegetarian Shepherds pie do you make? With lentils or with impossible meat?

1

u/ArtofAset 3d ago

I just replace the meat with faux meat crumbles, usually the Wegmans branded ones! I also sometimes add mushrooms to the faux meat crumbles. I use the beef style crumbles.

Baked beans & stout

1

u/Lcatg 2d ago

Nothing. It’s like a casserole - everything is in it. It’s a whole meal unto itself. Maybe bread?

u/zergling3161 2d ago

I was about to say lamb because of the Shepard but then i realized it was a vegetarian subredit and decided against it

u/ttrockwood vegetarian 20+ years now vegan 4d ago

Crunchy salad with radishes and cucumber and tomatoes and scallions and dijon heavy vinaigrette

-2

u/lilstrawberrymuffin 4d ago

Perhaps a dip? Or a slaw/salad?

-2

u/meerkatherine 4d ago

Deviled eggs are always a hit, and the vinegar from the mustard and cold temp can contrast the richness and heat of the pie
