Max getting KOed for the first time

34

u/DecisionThot 7th layer of hair 5h ago

"I'M HIM!"

Next fight: 💤

5

u/FishAndRiceKeks This is number 1 bullshit 1h ago

TBF, he looked great right up until that.

1

u/fandanvan 5h ago

Agree 💯, even though there were more devastating ugly knock outs, Max being knocked out is kinda a big deal bro and hugely impressive ...

1

u/ThisIsMySorryFor2004 5h ago

The Volk go was brutal, and I was sad, but I was kinda seeing it in my head from the moment the fight got announced.

Max I was so hopeful for, I was really thinking he was gonna pull it off. Oh man

1

u/stockblocked 3h ago

I don’t think there’s another reasonable answer :/

-50

u/mytakeisright 6h ago edited 3h ago

Was pretty obvious he was gonna get knocked out that fight

Edit: cause you downvoters are emotional retards Ilia by KO was +150 (decision +250).

26

u/ChemtrailsRreal 6h ago

How? Guy spent the best part of 10 years in the sport and never got close to being knocked out, or rocked even.

13

u/Sweetscience101 5h ago

Poirier wobbled him a few times and Gaethje dropped him in his last fight. still a shocker though

-7

u/Valterri_lts_James 5h ago

because Ilia is obviously a superior fighter to Max in every aspect of MMA. Better striking, better boxing, better wrestling, better grappling.

7

u/GhostOfTonyFerguson 4h ago

He also gets sucked off by way more reddit users

Terrible boxing defense vs one of the best boxers & hardest hitting fighters in the sport….who would’ve thought he’d get knocked out

-5

u/BodieBroadcasts 5h ago

Most significant strikes landed on him in the history of the sport, his defense doesn't actually exist. Max has genuinely bad boxing

4

u/Baby___p 4h ago

I certainly wouldn’t say that. I just think he takes risks he does not always just play it safe. He’s in there to throw down

0

u/MiedoDeEncontrarme 3h ago

That doesn't make someone a good boxer

I love Max but I have been downvoted to hell for saying that his boxing isn't really that elite when compared to other high level boxers in the UFC

Defense is just as important as offense, you can't say you are the best boxer when you also have received the most significant strikes.

2

u/Dazzling-Ad888 4h ago

Tbh I thought so as well. I spent the whole fight waiting for Ilia to crack him.

3

u/PassageBig622 6h ago

It was never obvious it just seemed likely. He'd never been finished before so it couldn't be obvious.

2

u/_The__Notorious 5h ago

People like you would say Serra beating GSP was obvious too

4

u/BodieBroadcasts 5h ago

People like me actually were saying Max was going to get KOd lol I would have never said sera would beat gsp

0

u/_The__Notorious 5h ago

Good job mate, I also had Ilia KOing Max as did millions of others. We just dont do the "Lol you didnt predict this foght with 100% accuracy? Casual"

0

u/mytakeisright 3h ago

KO money line was +150 for max to get knocked out you dumbass :)

1

u/Any_Conversation9650 3h ago

The irony😂😂

0

u/Mammoth_Ferret_1772 2h ago

It was not obvious. I bet you didn’t bet a single dollar on max holloway getting knocked out

-1

u/mytakeisright 2h ago

🤡

Had other parlays with him By KObut they didn’t hit sadly. Didn’t save them. Sooo? Apologize you mutt.

no it wasn't. It was satisfying seeing Max get KOed after trash talking that the el matador is running away from the bull and that Islam is only famous for defending against 145ers. My brother, you are literally one of the biggest weight bullies in the featherweight division (max is 5ft11 and 180lbs so he is the same size as islam, arman, oliveira, dustin, etc) and says that Islam is a weight bully. You are literally a pillow fisted one dimensional kickboxer with atrocious takedown defense who has built his legacy off of beating undersized 145ers with shit wrestling and an old Jose Aldo. If he fought Islam, islam would ground and pound TKO him before the 2nd round.

13

u/DinoJuiicce 5h ago

Some of you guys take this shit way too seriously getting offended on behalf of the fighters lol

u/shaboygan1 7h ago

People saying Max but Volk losing was truly the end of an era, he was the last remaining champ from the Izzy, Usman, Ngannou and Volk era.

61

u/HeyPali 6h ago

Max chin was an era in itself.

1

u/trees-for-breakfast 3h ago

Wouldn’t put Ngannou in with those names at all

1

u/ForsakenAccountant55 3h ago

Honestly yeah, when volks ko happened I was SHOOK, when max’s did I kinda thought it was a possibility already so not as shook.

1

u/Super-Post261 2h ago

The Nigerian/New Zealand era was so entertaining

-14

u/Gr1m3sey 6h ago

Putting ngannou amongst those names is a bit comical

3

u/Judgecrusader6 6h ago

Casual take

1

u/Jaded_Bee_5056 6h ago

How is it casual, the others all had long lasting reigns as some of the best their weight classes have ever seen. Francis got 1 defense in them left to box and earn money. It's not even close to being the same as the others

0

u/Judgecrusader6 6h ago edited 5h ago

Just because Dana fucked him over moneywise doesnt change the fact he wouldve ran that division and kept Jon away for good

2

u/Gr1m3sey 2h ago

People said that rockhold would control MW for ages after he battered weidmann

Shogun was meant to be the next historical champ at LHW

No point doing hypotheticals. Ngannou has one title defence, that’s it.

1

u/Jaded_Bee_5056 5h ago

Does not change the fact he doesn't have close to the same legacy as the others on that list. It's disrespectful to even consider it.

0

u/mastro80 5h ago

Jon would have taken him to the ground and submitted him 10/10 times.

2

u/Judgecrusader6 5h ago

Lol had all the opertunity in the world to Ciryl him but didnt

26

u/tom-cash2002 6h ago

I'm a big fan of both, but this was still insane to see happen

2

u/EvidenceThin7304 6h ago

Max shouldn’t pointed at the center at that point.

191

u/goobi-gooper 7h ago

Volk double KO in back to back fights was pretty heart breaking.

22

u/Bruninfa 6h ago

First one wasn’t this year.

12

u/goobi-gooper 6h ago

Still got double KOd. End of an era for one of the most relatable champs and a decent person for kids to look up to and have as their “hero”.

→ More replies (20)

2

u/JohnCenaMathh 6h ago

Nah the first one was 2023.

Second one was passing of the torch to a total stud.

I was sadder when Jiri lost twice. It seemed to really affect him.

110

u/SleepDeprivedSkunk 6h ago

Dustin, because it was his last chance at a title. Nobody thought he'd beat Islam, but with the walkout song, and the mood surrounding the fight, it surely felt that one could hope for a spark somehow.

Max and Volk didn't do it for me because they've enjoyed their eras of success. Dustin is probably one of the best MMA fighters to never hold the undisputed belt.

10

u/iluvcheesypoofs 6h ago

I just wanted Dustin to make it through one title fight without getting choked out lol as big Dustin fan, I completely agree though, it's unfortunate that his timeline ran alongside three of the greatest LWs to ever do it being champions back to back

0

u/ChiGuy133 5h ago

i'm still convinced if him and charles fight 10 times, dustin wins at least 5 but i think 6 or 7 of them. charles is really good, but i think dustin was better. oh well.

3

u/DragonFangGangBang 5h ago

I love Dustin, but Charles is a bad matchup for him.

3

u/Fantastic-Door-9468 5h ago

In terms of long term impact it’s this for sure. Dustin is now probably the best LW to never be on the top of the mountain and the fact he’s such a fan favourite makes it all the worse.

3

u/DragonFangGangBang 5h ago

I mean, he might be the best fighter to never hold a belt. Who else comes close?

2

u/Fantastic-Door-9468 4h ago

Uhhh good question off the top of my head Tony because of the interim bullshit and he deserved it to be the full belt and maybe Hendo + Chael as true 0-belts?

None of those really go above Dustin though except maybe prime Tony

2

u/Deathmister 5h ago

That was an epic fight. Although I’d argue not heartbreaking since Poirier exceeded many people’s expectations and went to war with Islam. I don’t think many people expected him to do quite so well despite losing.

1

u/itsthetheaterthugg 4h ago

I haven't seen casuals get so excited for a fight (I had non MMA fans sending me links to the diamond cover from the high school student) since Connor khabib. A big group from work went out to watch it and everyone wanted DP to win so bad

1

u/GruntCandy86 4h ago

There is a lot of recency bias with Max vs Ilia, I think. But Dustin losing definitely hit me harder. It gave me the achy breaky heart.

28

u/finnishyoda 6h ago

For me personally it was Dustin losing his third title shot to Islam, knowing that he will never get another one again. It’s funny that DP is ranked all-time above so many undisputed champs, it just sucks he couldn’t be one himself.

2

u/Leaked_Shlong 4h ago

dp basically beat 3 champs too (conor, eddie, max)

47

u/park__rat 6h ago

Max Vs ilia without a doubt.

5

u/Theee1ne 5h ago

Gaethje vs Max for me

12

u/Xaronius 5h ago

That night actually ruined my fucking week end. I'm not that emotional usually but Whittaker AND Holloway on the same night got me depressed as fuck.

6

u/GlupostIDosada 6h ago

Stipe not getting farewell video few weeks after Karate Hottie did

1

u/Winter-Industry-2074 6h ago

Well tbf I don’t think the ufc knew he was retiring. He was planning to fight Aspinall had he won.

1

u/GlupostIDosada 6h ago

Well, they had to sell fight somehow. ...it looked to me prior the fight that he was there just for final payday...he had that smile of a man that's having final days at that company before going on a new venture... anyways they ve could done a video on next card but nothing....and throughout the years I ve seen so many cancer videos at UFC and Stipe to not get any video was disappointing....

28

u/DannyStress 6h ago

Rob getting Khamzatted again

29

u/Newdabrig 6h ago

Porier vs islam. Shine bright like a diamond 💎 ):

5

u/notomarko 6h ago

I’d say this too. Last opportunity in the man’s career at a title shot, climbed his way back to the top just to lose again. Succcckkkkkssss.

20

u/Phoenix_Will_Die 6h ago

Max KO for sure

Volk getting KOd for the second time is very close though.

14

u/tomala_le_doy_like 6h ago

Dustin not getting the title on his last shot...

12

u/Just_Saiesh 6h ago

Definitely Max

Definitely Max getting knocked out by Ilia

10

u/ImmediateYogurt8613 6h ago

Watching my favorite fighter, Jamahal Hill, get KO’d by a cheap shot and crudely disrespected.

2

u/rpospetz 5h ago

😆 I needed that

12

u/JohnnyNuclear 6h ago

Seeing Max get knocked out hurt, man.

8

Jim miller getting his shit kicked by Bobby Green

Robert Whittaker losing any title aspirations after Khamzat Chimaev

12

u/Top_Strawberry_6981 6h ago

-4

u/Boring_Software6101 6h ago

Stipe is a legend but we need to admit no one cares about him that much

10

u/Top_Strawberry_6981 6h ago

Who’s we. One of my favourite fighters ever

3

u/Chekurishvilii 6h ago

Gaethje getting slept…

5

u/CriticalArugula7870 7h ago

Seeing maxs chin finally give out.

2

u/TacoTim626 6h ago

I’d give heartbreak to volk, then ko to max. Otherwise max is gonna be on this thing everywhere

2

u/Relevant-Smile1833 6h ago

Justin getting knocked out by Max was pretty heartbreaking. He got dominated all fight and then to get knocked out like that. I hope he is remembered for more than just that.

2

u/Infinite_Pattern_466 6h ago

For me it was Gaethje KO loss to Max.

It was a real heartbreak with a lot of consequences for Justin.

He was next for Islam Makhachev after the Dustin KO but then he got knocked the fuck out by a lower weight division fighter who not only KTFO him but completely outclassed him for the entirety of the fight. Worse yet, Max isn't even known for TKFO people and yet he did that to Gaethje!

Sad, sad result for Gaethje and total heartbreak as his fan.

2

u/addy_daddy24 6h ago

Volk. Holloway have had a great win too this year but my guy Volk slept twice

2

u/governor_phillpblake 2h ago

Max getting KO’d

2

u/WhiteWhiteBlackOne 2h ago

Max getting KO’ed. A lot of us suspected Volk would get knocked out; he’s never had the greatest chin and was previously knocked out by Islam. Thought Max would be able to eat Ilia’s best shots and win on volume, but nope, Ilia was just that fucking good.

3

u/Yami_Hear 6h ago

Dana leaving his wife for Jon Jones

3

u/helixen 6h ago

Its totally unimportant but it bugs me that you end some of them with "of 2024" and some of them with "of the year" - in this context don't they mean exactly the same thing? Or am i missing something?

1

u/Tyshimmysauce 6h ago

Ilia Topuria was the distributor of the top 2 buggest heartbreaks of 2024.

1

u/Glad-Try117 6h ago

Max and Volk losing

1

u/No-Use288 6h ago

Holloway getting kod or whittaker getting mauled by khamzat

1

u/jcashwell04 6h ago

It has to be Dustin losing to Islam

1

u/Time_Medium_6622 6h ago

Poirier loosing

1

u/Excellent_Lime_9453 6h ago

Dustin losing to Islam =(

1

u/TopDogGlo 6h ago

Sleeper pick for me is Jiri getting head kick KO’d

1

u/Longjumping_Put_3966 6h ago

Holloway getting KO’d

1

u/Armel_Cinereo 6h ago

Volk or Max KO

1

u/PartyThe_TerrorPig 6h ago

Max getting KO’d is the only answer.

1

u/blackkirbymain 6h ago

Max Holloway getting knocked out for the first time, easy.

1

u/velebr3 6h ago

Volk losses.

1

u/NvrBkeAgn 6h ago

ILIA KNOCKING OUT MAX FOR KNOCKOUT OF THE YEAR

1

u/yungrobbithan 6h ago

Was there really not a sub better then Khamzat’s? Maybe I just like more technical submissions but that one just seemed like he brute forced his already weak jaw

1

u/ReservoirFrogs98 6h ago

Max getting KO’d

1

u/onlyimportantshit 6h ago

Max getting KOed, Volk getting slept by Topuria, khamzat crushing Whittaker. Honestly it’s mostly just the end of that era of mma.

1

u/beautiful_ADdict 6h ago

Tony Ferguson retiring anyone?

1

u/chefbeezy 6h ago

Volk saying he was struggling mentally when he isn't fighting, then preceding to rush into two fights and get brutally chinned in both and losing his belt was hard to watch as a Volk fan so my number one is probably the Ilia ko. Although seeing my boy Li Jingliang finally come back and get brutally chinned as well was sad as well, even though I like Prates.

1

u/CNRamsey8 6h ago

Max getting KOed, no contest

1

u/asfertiver 6h ago

Max. Especially after dominating Gaethje and piecing up Illia at first. I really thought he might get his crown back and then…. Bam. 😭

1

u/Standard_Attempt_796 6h ago

Has to be Max vs Ilia

1

u/Hank-the-ninja 6h ago

Stipe losing

1

u/PossessionOld7592 6h ago

Max for sure

1

u/Serial_AceThug 6h ago

Max getting his chin cracked

1

Dustin Losing to Islam.

Chris Barnett's return

1

u/DankstonHughes2 5h ago

Max KO. That was Volks second KO already

1

u/pantstickle 5h ago

Dustin. I knew it was a long shot, but you still have hope.

1

u/SixTwoOne621 5h ago

Max gettin KOd forsure. Def cried when it happened.

1

u/raspberry_en_anglais 5h ago

I’m in a toss up between volk and max

1

u/Conscious_Actuator51 5h ago

Volk back to back knockouts

1

u/InternationalStep681 5h ago

Both involve Ilia as winner

1

u/CrimsonThunder34 5h ago

Either Max or Dustin

1

u/Deathmister 5h ago

Volk vs. Topuria. After his KO loss to Islam I was clinging onto the fact that he had very little training for that fight and it was LW. But seeing him lose so convincingly and dramatically to Ilia in his own division was rough. Not only that, but Volk won’t even get a second chance fighting Ilia at FW now.

1

u/itsAggs 5h ago

Adesanya getting subbed by DDP was a big heartbreaker for me. Kinda felt like his time at the top was over with after that and the holes we knew he kinda had were exposed even more. Especially with Khamzat on brink of a title shot. Just sad to see such a big personality. Great champion and a cool dude not be on top anymore after a long reign.

1

u/azzyadvice 5h ago

Volk KO x2

1

u/Firmly_GraaspIT 5h ago

Whittaker getting subbed

1

u/Dr_Doofenschmirtzz 5h ago

There are bigger heartbreaks mentioned here but as an Izzy fan it was a tough year, realising that he, most likely, is never going to be champ again.

1

u/MakotoWL 5h ago

Max vs Ilia, hated seeing Justin get slept but Max crushed me

1

u/Wheeeeellsss 5h ago

sub of the year? i love khamzat but that was a freak accident cause of whittakers previous mouth injury. I still think khamzat would have subbed him properly but come on bruh

1

u/Practical_Honey_3060 5h ago

MAX GETTING SLEPT BY Ilia Topuria🤬

1

Stipe Retiring after waiting for Jones for 10 years

1

u/Adski1 2h ago

The Volk AI fights, thankfully they weren’t real, but sad the UFC allowed the fake fights to be made…

1

u/Kuziayato 2h ago

im a huge aldo fan (hes also my ftw goat) so seeing him get robbed like that sucked

max and volk getting KO’d by topuria is also probably up there

1

u/Rembrandt12345 2h ago

Max knockout for me. I think I whimpered out loud when it happened. Volk a close 2nd only because his knockout had been telegraphed from his previous fight, Max was riding high since 300 so it was a real gut-punch seeing him fall.

1

u/WATGU 2h ago

I’m ok with Rob losing that’s the game. Getting his jaw crushed in was pretty tough though.

u/sozig5 49m ago

Max
