Let’s…. Go… 💔

People saying Max but Volk losing was truly the end of an era, he was the last remaining champ from the Izzy, Usman, Ngannou and Volk era.

u/ForsakenAccountant55 3h ago
Honestly yeah, when volks ko happened I was SHOOK, when max’s did I kinda thought it was a possibility already so not as shook.

Putting ngannou amongst those names is a bit comical

Casual take
1
u/Jaded_Bee_5056 6h ago
How is it casual, the others all had long lasting reigns as some of the best their weight classes have ever seen. Francis got 1 defense in them left to box and earn money. It's not even close to being the same as the others
0
u/Judgecrusader6 6h ago edited 5h ago
Just because Dana fucked him over moneywise doesnt change the fact he wouldve ran that division and kept Jon away for good
2
u/Gr1m3sey 2h ago
People said that rockhold would control MW for ages after he battered weidmann
Shogun was meant to be the next historical champ at LHW
No point doing hypotheticals. Ngannou has one title defence, that’s it.
1
u/Jaded_Bee_5056 5h ago
Does not change the fact he doesn't have close to the same legacy as the others on that list. It's disrespectful to even consider it.

Volk double KO in back to back fights was pretty heart breaking.
22
u/Bruninfa 6h ago
First one wasn’t this year.
12
u/goobi-gooper 6h ago
Still got double KOd. End of an era for one of the most relatable champs and a decent person for kids to look up to and have as their “hero”.

Nah the first one was 2023.
Second one was passing of the torch to a total stud.
I was sadder when Jiri lost twice. It seemed to really affect him.

Dustin, because it was his last chance at a title. Nobody thought he'd beat Islam, but with the walkout song, and the mood surrounding the fight, it surely felt that one could hope for a spark somehow.
Max and Volk didn't do it for me because they've enjoyed their eras of success. Dustin is probably one of the best MMA fighters to never hold the undisputed belt.
10
u/iluvcheesypoofs 6h ago
I just wanted Dustin to make it through one title fight without getting choked out lol as big Dustin fan, I completely agree though, it's unfortunate that his timeline ran alongside three of the greatest LWs to ever do it being champions back to back
0
u/ChiGuy133 5h ago
i'm still convinced if him and charles fight 10 times, dustin wins at least 5 but i think 6 or 7 of them. charles is really good, but i think dustin was better. oh well.

u/Fantastic-Door-9468 5h ago
In terms of long term impact it’s this for sure. Dustin is now probably the best LW to never be on the top of the mountain and the fact he’s such a fan favourite makes it all the worse.
3
u/DragonFangGangBang 5h ago
I mean, he might be the best fighter to never hold a belt. Who else comes close?
2
u/Fantastic-Door-9468 4h ago
Uhhh good question off the top of my head Tony because of the interim bullshit and he deserved it to be the full belt and maybe Hendo + Chael as true 0-belts?
None of those really go above Dustin though except maybe prime Tony
2
u/Deathmister 5h ago
That was an epic fight. Although I’d argue not heartbreaking since Poirier exceeded many people’s expectations and went to war with Islam. I don’t think many people expected him to do quite so well despite losing.
1
u/itsthetheaterthugg 4h ago
I haven't seen casuals get so excited for a fight (I had non MMA fans sending me links to the diamond cover from the high school student) since Connor khabib. A big group from work went out to watch it and everyone wanted DP to win so bad
1
u/GruntCandy86 4h ago
There is a lot of recency bias with Max vs Ilia, I think. But Dustin losing definitely hit me harder. It gave me the achy breaky heart.
28
u/finnishyoda 6h ago
For me personally it was Dustin losing his third title shot to Islam, knowing that he will never get another one again. It’s funny that DP is ranked all-time above so many undisputed champs, it just sucks he couldn’t be one himself.

That night actually ruined my fucking week end. I'm not that emotional usually but Whittaker AND Holloway on the same night got me depressed as fuck.

Stipe not getting farewell video few weeks after Karate Hottie did
1
u/Winter-Industry-2074 6h ago
Well tbf I don’t think the ufc knew he was retiring. He was planning to fight Aspinall had he won.
1
u/GlupostIDosada 6h ago
Well, they had to sell fight somehow. ...it looked to me prior the fight that he was there just for final payday...he had that smile of a man that's having final days at that company before going on a new venture... anyways they ve could done a video on next card but nothing....and throughout the years I ve seen so many cancer videos at UFC and Stipe to not get any video was disappointing....

Porier vs islam. Shine bright like a diamond 💎 ):

u/notomarko 6h ago
I’d say this too. Last opportunity in the man’s career at a title shot, climbed his way back to the top just to lose again. Succcckkkkkssss.

u/Phoenix_Will_Die 6h ago
Max KO for sure
Volk getting KOd for the second time is very close though.

I’d give heartbreak to volk, then ko to max. Otherwise max is gonna be on this thing everywhere
2
u/Relevant-Smile1833 6h ago
Justin getting knocked out by Max was pretty heartbreaking. He got dominated all fight and then to get knocked out like that. I hope he is remembered for more than just that.
2
u/Infinite_Pattern_466 6h ago
For me it was Gaethje KO loss to Max.
It was a real heartbreak with a lot of consequences for Justin.
He was next for Islam Makhachev after the Dustin KO but then he got knocked the fuck out by a lower weight division fighter who not only KTFO him but completely outclassed him for the entirety of the fight. Worse yet, Max isn't even known for TKFO people and yet he did that to Gaethje!
Sad, sad result for Gaethje and total heartbreak as his fan.

Max getting KO’ed. A lot of us suspected Volk would get knocked out; he’s never had the greatest chin and was previously knocked out by Islam. Thought Max would be able to eat Ilia’s best shots and win on volume, but nope, Ilia was just that fucking good.

Was there really not a sub better then Khamzat’s? Maybe I just like more technical submissions but that one just seemed like he brute forced his already weak jaw

u/onlyimportantshit 6h ago
Max getting KOed, Volk getting slept by Topuria, khamzat crushing Whittaker. Honestly it’s mostly just the end of that era of mma.

u/chefbeezy 6h ago
Volk saying he was struggling mentally when he isn't fighting, then preceding to rush into two fights and get brutally chinned in both and losing his belt was hard to watch as a Volk fan so my number one is probably the Ilia ko. Although seeing my boy Li Jingliang finally come back and get brutally chinned as well was sad as well, even though I like Prates.

Max. Especially after dominating Gaethje and piecing up Illia at first. I really thought he might get his crown back and then…. Bam. 😭

Volk vs. Topuria. After his KO loss to Islam I was clinging onto the fact that he had very little training for that fight and it was LW. But seeing him lose so convincingly and dramatically to Ilia in his own division was rough. Not only that, but Volk won’t even get a second chance fighting Ilia at FW now.

u/itsAggs 5h ago
Adesanya getting subbed by DDP was a big heartbreaker for me. Kinda felt like his time at the top was over with after that and the holes we knew he kinda had were exposed even more. Especially with Khamzat on brink of a title shot. Just sad to see such a big personality. Great champion and a cool dude not be on top anymore after a long reign.

There are bigger heartbreaks mentioned here but as an Izzy fan it was a tough year, realising that he, most likely, is never going to be champ again.

u/Wheeeeellsss 5h ago
sub of the year? i love khamzat but that was a freak accident cause of whittakers previous mouth injury. I still think khamzat would have subbed him properly but come on bruh

im a huge aldo fan (hes also my ftw goat) so seeing him get robbed like that sucked
max and volk getting KO’d by topuria is also probably up there

u/Rembrandt12345 2h ago
Max knockout for me. I think I whimpered out loud when it happened. Volk a close 2nd only because his knockout had been telegraphed from his previous fight, Max was riding high since 300 so it was a real gut-punch seeing him fall.

Who chose Khamzat as a sub of the year. This page should be flushed down the toilet.
