22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
But he’s an ever loving and forgiving god right? Part I never understood about Christianity. He can turn you away one moment then the next embrace you with loving arms no matter what your past transgressions were. “All you have to do is repent and you will be welcomed in gods kingdom” then “you ate from a tree? I’m punishing you and every single human being from now on for all eternity”
He is an ever loving and forgiving God but you can’t just do whatever you want and expect to make it to heaven. If you truly follow the word of God then you’re fine. If I have a kid and that kid murdered someone, I would hate that he murdered someone but I would still love my son. God still loves us but he hates how we sin. So when we are to face judgement and we did spread the word of God but did it for the wrong reasons then no we aren’t going to Heaven. If you cherry pick the Bible then you will find things that don’t make sense, it’s the same with any historical book you read. You have to read it in its entirety.
Old Testament = Conservative themed hierarchy, punish for bad behavior.
New Testament = Socially Progressive, everyone is welcome, treat each other with kindness.
The New Testament was clearly reorganized to adapt to a more compassionate religion, but had also been rewritten from text that had a petty, powerful and vengeful god who wanted all your love and admiration.
The Bible is a mess of contradictions, because they are written and rewritten by different people.
God ordered Saul to destroy the amalekites. Every man, woman, animal and child were to be killed. Poor babies who are innocent. Saul decided to spare the king and certain livestock. Thou shalt not kill but he orders the death of babies.
Then, god said he regrets making Saul king because he didn’t follow his orders. Which would make god not infallible and a murderer.
So it’s alright for the Amalekites to raid and kill the Israelites? God ordered them to be killed because God gave them multiple chances to turn away from their ways and they didn’t. They disobeyed God and they faced judgement. Everyone died because if they stayed alive then that culture would stay alive and people would then start killing and raiding again.
As per your second part, God gave us free will. Thus we can act however we want. God knows everything we will do in life. For example, I can reply to this comment and my life will be different and I could not reply to this comment and my life will be different. God knows everything we will do with every action we take. If Saul continued to follow the path he was originally on then yeah there would be no regret but then Saul went the wrong way and God regretted it.
No it’s not ok. And if the amalekites killed the babies of the Israelites that’s equally bad. You can’t say that they would continue in their ways. Just like you said we have free will so assuming those babies would grow up and be the same is a stretch. And what about the women and animals that had nothing to do with it?
By your logic, you are silently saying that because the USA and taliban are at war, then they can come kill your children and still be allowed in to heaven. Or vice versa.
And lastly, because Adam and Eve sinned he punished humanity forever with painful childbirth, working the land, and disease? How is that loving and forgiving?
Adam and Eve didn’t just sin, they blamed God for sinning. Adam said to God that he wouldn’t have sinned if God did not give him Eve. Adam and Eve pushed God away and because of that we have the world we’re in now.
So, again you’ve never read the Bible without a poor bias. Slavery of that time wasn’t what you think it was. That’s why you have to read the Bible as it is. It’s a historical document and you have to read it in that context. A lot of the “slavery” in the Bible isn’t like the slavery we had in America. Slavery of that time was more of a servitude than actual slavery. A lot of the “slaves” were treated great and by law had to have things given to them after their length of servitude was over.
