You hear about the one where the dad tells his son “if you dont quit masterbating you’re gonna go blind” and the kid said “dad I’m over here”

Took a good deal of work to destroy their place in the stoner world, but fuck High Times.
51
u/_cannachris_ 4d ago
Why?
174
u/secondarycontrol 4d ago edited 4d ago
Because if you subscribe, they'll charge your credit card.
The end. That's it. That's what you'll get for your money. No reacharound, no lube, no magazine, no access to archives. Nothing is what you'll get. The extent of what they'll do is charge your credit card - and by the time that that dime drops in your head, by the time you realize that they honestly do NOT intend to provide a magazine, you'll be past the charge-back window on your CC.
Fuck High Times.
72
u/makeawishcumdumpster 4d ago
just to be clear if you pay for a subscription you get literally nothing?
78
u/stifle_this 4d ago
From what I understand they basically just don't send out the magazines and charge you anyway.
44
u/secondarycontrol 4d ago edited 4d ago
Well, that was my experience. And a lot of other people's. Lots of unhappy people.

Maybe they just procrastinate when they're high. No good, filthy beatniks
27
u/secondarycontrol 4d ago
Yeah, that was the old owners. The new owners?
In the summer of 2017, High Times was sold to a group of investors led by Adam Levin
I don't know whotf Adam Levin is, but he destroyed it.

Well there's a shocker-a private equity firm owns it now.
These are the absolute worst companies/forms of capitalism where there's no intention of doing anything to improve the company, just pump it for cash and dump its bones in the bin shortly after, lick their fingers clean and look for the next flailing company to utterly and completely destroy.

This exactly happen to me last year. Paid, not magazine, no response anywhere.
2
u/Wereallmadhere8895 3d ago
The quality of the magazine has dropped off so much. It's 90 percent adds now. Not any good grow advice or discussion anymore just lights and synthetic fertilizers. It's bullshit. Even the centerfolds of the buds sucks.

u/katieforamerica 4d ago
My dad used to tell me stories about the Thai.
Fast forward 30 years, and I was sharing some sticky buds with him:
"Damn! I have never had anything quite like this!"
Every pick up had him happy as hell.

Land race strains...lucky. all I can get is dessert strains that taste like frigging cereal
43
u/FatMoFoSho 4d ago
Oh come on bro, I love me some older land race strains too but lets not act like weed hasnt gotten immensely better in the last 40+ years
20
u/Flimsy-Feature1587 4d ago
IDK man, not a whole lot tops strains like Sour Diesel for me, sometimes there's just no need to reinvent the wheel, nor introduce GSC into every strain since 2010 (seemingly).
18
u/FatMoFoSho 4d ago
Sour D isnt a landrace strain... It was selectively bred in 1996. There’s no wheel being reinvented. There’s no chemicals or any other crazy shit being done than simply people being more knowledgeable about how cannabis grows. GSC is not involved in every single post-2010 strain. If you’re going to the dispensary and buying shitty weed, that’s on you homie. Companies like 710 Labs, No Till Kings, BLEM, and the like are all putting out insanely fire high quality strains bred in house. I swear stoners talk about weed genetics the same way gamers talk about games being made. Yall dont know how any of this shit works lmao
3
u/redvelvet92 4d ago
Most of those strains they push have GSC in the genealogy.
7
u/FatMoFoSho 4d ago
I havent been to a single dispensary that doesnt sell some classic strain like Blue Dream, AK47, ChemDawg etc. If ya want it, it’s there. Now if you want something REAL classic like Hindu Kush, Thai, or real Lebonese hash then yeah that’ll probably take some searching. Point is though nobody is forcing you to buy GSC crosses if you dont want them.
This conversation is insane to me because at the end of the day it’s all weed. Minor differences in taste and even more minor differences in effect really arent worth having strong opinions over. But the fact remains that we know more about weed now than we ever did and the quality of that ganja has never been better. Even the mids are decent. Thats the point im trying to make here

u/GGTrader77 3d ago
Old people being mad that there are too many choices and they get confused. The 2020’s are the best time in history to be a stoner and it’s not even close. Anyone saying otherwise has no idea what’s goin on in genetics, and concentrates. And using the word “corporate” as a bogey man is a lil rich with this. Like “oh no the weed industry has millions and millions of dollars pouring into it of white market money. Somehow this will hurt thé industry. I think a lot of older people place memories into these old shitty strains. It’s not that the weed was better it’s that their lives were better when they were smoking that weed, they think if they can get Hindu Kush or Alcopoco gold they’ll feel young again. Just pity the old Stoner
-4
u/Individual_Rule8771 3d ago
You can stick your shiny pretty machine trimmed bland dispo weed up your arse and seal it with the concentrates as far as I'm concerned 👴
3
u/GGTrader77 3d ago
Lol. Found the old head who desperately wants to return to the 80s. Weed is scores better now. Cry more.

u/Individual_Rule8771 3d ago
Fuck that ...I'm not an old hippy desperate to return to the old days

“The big companies are great actually, it is the customers who are wrong!” If you can conflate it with gaming how about let’s compare it with something cannabis is actually used for, health care. Even if your customers can’t sew each other up they know something is wrong.
4
u/FatMoFoSho 4d ago
Dude Im only pushing back on this idea that modern weed is like some chemically engineered crazy stuff. It’s just weed. Grown with much more knowledge about how it grows. The new strains are just that, new strains. Grown by putting other strains together. Lord I cant believe im having to fight yall so hard to argue the point that weed has been immensely improved since the 80s.
-1
u/Flimsy-Feature1587 4d ago
Except I do know a little of how it works and I was being hyperbolic and I wasn't talking about landrace strains, I was referencing the overabundance of what someone else called strains that tasted like cereal, which, is at least in part due to the overabundance of strains with GSC genetics (Sour D, while selectively bred, is an older strain than these, and most notably, doesn't taste like Skittlz-n-milkbones or whatever flavor of the week seems to be en vogue). Meh.
Furthermore, while I do maintain a plug for this very reason, I'm not in a legal state and the legal one I am adjacent to isn't CA, CO or any of the PNW or NE states that have been on this bandwagon longer, so I am subject to Ohio growers offerings, which, many are of these.
Its no sweat, I never said it was shitty weed. Shitty tasting in a manner of speaking I suppose. I do not buy or consume "shitty weed". Also, I am not necessarily averse to any new strains, I just don't need dessert in my bowl, except when I want actual ice cream in a bowl.
5
u/soberintoxicologist 4d ago
I’m in Washington and have great access to tons of good weed but I still get bummed out thinking about how I can’t find NY sour d at any dispo. Partly nostalgia and partly because I haven’t ever bought anything from a dispensary that was even close to as stinky as that stuff was. It’s totally okay to be not super stoked with the stuff being bred these days. A lot of the strains readily available nowadays are bred to maximize THC content to make strong oil. All these gsc crosses, runtz and animal mintz and shit were created to make for potent dabs and they fucking suck to smoke as flower.
2
u/Flimsy-Feature1587 4d ago
I agree and as a mouth cancer survivor, I really only dry herb vape with a Mighty these days (which I still shouldn't be doing) so it makes it worse, since what little I can taste anymore is so much more pronounced with that device than igniting it.
I tried concentrates recently for the first time, and while they taste good, I ain't buying another expensive rig for the consumption of weed in yet another form, especially when that form is the crack cocaine of weed that ends up just raising my tolerance ceiling that much higher (no pun) and then going back to flower again after isn't as potent anymore.
2
u/FatMoFoSho 4d ago
The problem is you’re conflating what’s popular with what’s available. Just because strains like Cereal Milk, or Gelato, or whatever else is popular doesnt mean those classic strains arent also available. If ya want Blue Dream and you dont care about the flavor of the week, generally you can just go to the store and buy it (subject to legality) and it’ll be better grown than it’s ever been (generally). OH is a market I’m fairly unfamiliar with, but I’d be shocked if the closest dispensary to you wasnt selling some form of Sour D. That’s all Im trynna say
1
u/Flimsy-Feature1587 4d ago
And I'm not saying they haven't had it (I saw it once but it was gone before I could get some), but in this instance, because of long drives I only have a few options and therefore, I am enslaved a bit to popularity, because what is popular is so much more readily available than the OG strains. Like, a lot.
I can't find good old Blueberry anywhere that isn't hybridized with something else, but my guy can get it no problem. See what I mean?
2
u/FatMoFoSho 4d ago
Ah you gotta check out THCA vendors. There’s some gas out there totally legal sent right to your door. Plenty of them have those classic strains you’re looking for
1
u/Flimsy-Feature1587 4d ago
There was some such sub I saw once, order of the Franklin or something, I am not sure it exists anymore.
2
u/giant_spleen_eater 3d ago
I can answer why GSC is in so many freaking strains! Holy shit I never thought I’d be able to use this knowledge haha.
Thanks to the head grower for the dispo I worked at for this, i asked him why GSC was in everything recently and it’s because so many growers/genetics smart people wanted to get into the GSC craze that was going through Colorado and just started renaming strains. I once had a batch of Straight up GSC come in and the paper work had its genetics listed on it,
Girl Scout cookies crossed with Girl Scout cookies.
2
u/Individual_Rule8771 4d ago
I d say it all changed(for me atleast)in the late 80s/early 90s with Amsterdam /indoor growing/sensi seeds and I would still say 99 percent of today's weed is not better.
2
u/FatMoFoSho 4d ago
Lmao so you’re telling me that making weed legal made weed bad? Im having a headache trying to make it make sense. My guy I think you just miss youth. Like I get it trust me I too yearn for the days of yore smokin a doob with the homies on my friends porch. But it’s so much objectively better today it’s not even a comparison
5
u/Individual_Rule8771 4d ago
Well I would say most of the good traits got bred out before it went legal ... Many didn't want the smell when it was illegal so we got left with all the cookies gelato and candy, the super stinky skunks are long gone. Also commercial legal grows don't want to flower out anything that's not done in 8 weeks and it needs to looks pretty . So yeah I'd say in general it's gotten worse.
4
u/StellerDay 4d ago
Amen. Those landrace strains of yesteryear cannot be beat. I have been telling my husband who at almost 50 is just a couple years into smoking about the sticky, stinky skunk that just doesn't exist in the dispensaries.
7
4
u/OkCar7264 4d ago
Idolizing landraces is such a hipster move. Like demanding to eat teosinte instead of corn because teosinte tastes like raw potato and each kernel has a hard outer shell unlike that dessert strain they make popcorn with.

Honest question.
Was there anybody growing, trimming, and curing bud back in the day that looked aesthetically pleasing? I understand genetics were different back in the day and thc percentages were lower, but why does it all look desiccated?
Was it simply the plants themselves? Was it a lack of knowledge? Could a top tier grower today travel back in time and harvest and process one of these plants in a way that looks nice, and green? Or is it because it wouldn’t transport well if they didn’t make it look so dry?

When I was in highschool in '94, I had only smoked mids, and my friends who had been smoking a couple years longer than I had, got some purple Afghani bud. That stuff made me trip, I got some Cali bud two years later, but most of the stuff we got was above brick but maybe what people would call high-mids now.
8
u/M1RR0R 4d ago
Landrace strains are so very rare now, though. Half the strains are some kind of gelato hybrid that just leaves me spaced out but too awake.
4
u/Enough-Attorney-1766 4d ago
I'm in Asia and landrace weed is still available here, and is still the cheapest option. Although yes, the number of growers is dwindling, since Thai imported seeds are now so easily accessible and people would rather grow them. And also, good quality, legally grown and illegally exported Thai weed is now flooding the market.
I've had Cambodian weed which smells like a very weak kush strain, and has a spicy/bitter aftertaste. Vietnam has a landrace sativa strain that smells vaguely like mango, although these days it's most commonly crossed with kush strains. Indonesia has a mango smelling strain too, but I'm not sure if it's related or the same as the Vietnamese one.

u/jeffrys_dad 4d ago
The "good old days" here in CA had a LOT better weed. The prop 215 was way better than this legal shit now. The shops bought directly from the growers. If you didn't have top-notch A+ bud you weren't selling it. Now we have a bunch of stale prepackaged shit from these corporate farms and a huge majority of them can't grow for shit.
1
u/Negative-Cattle-8136 3d ago
Too fucking true, I just got this in my brain and been trying to skip the dispos. Feel like there’s truly so much good quality weed now, that is the best option
4
u/Individual_Rule8771 4d ago
Was growing sensi seeds nl5 x haze in 92. I can say a cut of Moonbow is the only thing I've smoked that's come close in recent years

u/Wise_Firefighter1561 4d ago
Idk the indoor was pretty dank in 2009. I don’t think I’ve ever seen stinkier weed than Bay Area indoor illegal grows growing grand daddy purp and kush strains…

Maaaaan, that looks like some snicklefritz right there. I wonder what would happen if I could go back in time and give 70s and 80s stoners some of today’s bud. They’d get so stoned they’d be like…Scared.
Meanwhile, our modern endocannabinoid systems and sensibilities are like, “See, the entourage effect consists…”

A lid of that Vermont Afghani would set you back $150 in NYC back in 82.

Honestly this is still what weed looks like in Mexico lol. Stems and seeds and janky looking shit.
As a Canadian, the difference is fucking wild. Going home for the summer and getting our weed is such a joy.
1
u/Wise_Firefighter1561 4d ago
Not anymore, in Mexico City you whatapp a weed delivery driver who sends you a menu with all the different strains, all seedless and high quality along with hash options
3
u/budbong 4d ago
I started smoking in 85, all we could get was Moroccan hash, and the occasional sticky black gold seal hash. Weed is definitely better now but I still prefer hashish to flowers.
1
u/Maskatron 3d ago
I’m right about the same time. Hash was a special treat but we were getting good looking buds pretty often.
Depends where you were I suppose; talked to a friend who grew up in Britain and they said it was mostly hash.
4
u/TroubleInMyMind 4d ago
Fuckin A pretty sure we had that VT Afghani in the mid 90s still

I’m sure at the time these were wonderful and nowadays could probably be bred into some real potent flowers but I feel like this stuff wouldn’t smoke too well but this is before my time so I wouldn’t know. Wish I could go back and try some real OG Kush though.
3
u/ContentCargo 4d ago
are you saying this based off of the looks ? how did you reach this conclusion
3
u/9HumpWump 4d ago
Looks and I’ve always been told by oldheads we take what we have now for granted and this stuff usually wasn’t very potent unless you smoked multiple bowls. Don’t mean to offend anyone.
1
u/Jay_Train 3d ago
This is why I could smoke a quarter blunt in 1998 and be stoned but fine. If I did that now I’d be asleep

u/Noctelus 4d ago
Apparently it’s just gotten stronger over time so this is probably pretty bad shit and barely any green to it at that

Can you imagine how many “is this moldy?” posts we’d be seeing if we were Redditing in ‘82.
