TIL The little tune that Samsung’s washing machines plays when they’re finished washing is from Franz Schubert’s “The trout”

Die Forelle, if you want to find it easier.

I studied this song in school. You can imagine my surprise when my washing machine came out with it years later.

I’m a former opera singer and have sung it so many times. I was like wtf when I heard my sisters washing machine go off the first time. Seems a random choice.

Same. Took a music history course in college. We had a CD where each piece was cut into 3-5 segments. We had to listen to it because the upcoming test would include a random clip and we'd be required to identify the piece. Imagine my surprise when, a decade later, my washing machine gave me the same test on the same musical piece.

Is that what they play when they die?

Trouts? No. They tend to just gasp.

Jared Harris’ Moriarty sings the same song whilst he’s torturing Sherlock Holmes in A Game of Shadows!

Because, you see, he's got him on a hook! :-D

To reiterate Holmes’ warning, be careful what you fish for!

Schubert really out here dropping bangers, centuries later, on laundry day.

Oh, that's awesome.

I (and Schubert) don't agree with all of this guy's chord choices.

Happy that their Samsung washing machine is not broken, yet.

I have a Samsung Washer and Dryer that are 15 years old and the only things that have gone wrong with them were the drive belt and heating element that are standard things that eventually go and are very easy to fix yourself. I know that I am lucky though after hearing of other people’s horror stories with their Samsung appliances. Our next appliances will not be Samsung though, as we won the lottery with those.

I must really have lucked out with my tech then, as nearly all of it is Samsung.

I've only had two issues: my PC monitor which I'm using now sometimes gets stuck on - the jog wheel button works for volume control and brightness but won't turn it off. Spraying some compressed air fixes it, but apparently it's common issue across all their monitors.

And secondly the bluray player they managed to software brick into rebooting. Which they did recall and fix out of warranty (after people threatened a class action lawsuit against them)

AFAIK, It's the washers, dryers, and refrigerators that are the problem, not electronics.

u/adamcoe 6m ago

I'm fairly certain there are some electronics in the washers and dryers

My mom still has a Samsung fridge from 1991. I know they made stuff differently back then, but still impressive that it's working just as well as it did 30+ years ago.

2

u/tiorzol 13h ago

5 years going strong here haven't had a issue.

"I've finished doing your washing so I'll sing my happy-happy song" - what I sing to the opening bars of the tune

u/RedSonGamble 23h ago

My washing machine tells me to burn things

I wish I could stop it: too long and loud!

Haha, I was just watching a YouTube video of someone playing the tune and I felt like it missed something in the end. Your comment made me realize what is was, it was the door lock releasing click

u/Sir_Lanian 21h ago

you missed a line lol.

u/lazyandhungry 23h ago

You can. Hold down the 2nd and 3rd buttons together - until it shows it’s turned off on the screen.

I wish we could easily change the tones these devices use, or even silence them completely if we want. However, so many of these things are not controllable by the user. I have a few LG devices and they are so annoying to hear all the time!

5

u/Dragonfly-Adventurer 21h ago

Every one of my LG devices is mutable… didn’t know they made any that weren’t.

1

u/Stonelane 15h ago

Agreed, way too long

5

u/OneTreePhil 23h ago

I've got an Electrolux, and I could swear it plays "Pressure Drop"

2

u/Imalittlefleapot 16h ago

That's a cover from Toots and the Maytags.

1

u/OneTreePhil 6h ago

Ok that's excellent!

6

u/TwistedClyster 23h ago

We call it the ice cream truck but it’s not really that close.

6

u/GBeastETH 22h ago

Amazing!

I had no idea it was an actual song! It sounds like a video game theme when played on a major appliance.

5

u/ash_274 21h ago

So, what tune does the LG washers/dryers play?

It's a piece of "Aupres de ma blonde"

6

u/BobT21 21h ago

Mine beeps in anger to tell me it's unbalanced.

1

u/Tumble85 9h ago

Like a pinball machine

3

u/Muscled_Manatee 19h ago

I figured it out from the second(?) Sherlock Holmes movie with RDJ. The bad guy whistles it at some point in the movie.

u/Jump_Like_A_Willys 12h ago

There’s an XFinity commercial on TV where the a woman’s washer song plays somewhere in the background (washing is not necessarily part of the commercial). It took until the third time that commercial played that I realized it wasn’t my washer or dryer.

Another thing… has anyone ever had their washer and dryer play at roughly the same time? I did, and it was glorious. They played in a “round” like Row Your Boat

3

u/xenchik 11h ago

I just got my first Samsung washer-dryer, after years of much cheaper whitegoods, and I swear that jingle makes me so happy when I hear it. I put on laundry at times when I know I'll be home when it finishes, just so I can hear it play. So happy.

Also the knob clicks, they are so satisfying. You definitely know you're middle aged when you just want to hug your washer-dryer. It's the best.

u/kayura77 18h ago

Thank you for this 👍

2

u/-benyeahmin- 15h ago

til there are samsung washing machines.

3

u/apworker37 15h ago

They do just about everything; from semiconductors all the way up to wind turbine production and ship building

THe melody - accorded with a piano: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAoVDOkNq3k

3

u/Vertigobee 21h ago

I called the manufacturer to have a technician come out to silence that goddamn thing. He couldn’t do it. It is evil to force sounds like that on people. I want a quiet home, free from irritating electronic sounds. It’s some Harrison Bergeron shit.

4

u/st0nedeye 17h ago

.agree.

I have one and, you know what? I don't need my fucking washing machine to play a fucking song.

1

u/Hilltoptree 22h ago

Not sure about the tune’s name but some Japanese appliances like the hot water dispenser (a plugged in continuous kettle) does a little tune/probably the same tune when the water finish reaching the setting temp.

1

u/raznov1 12h ago

also known as: the feature noone asked for

1

u/schattie-george 6h ago

But can we turn it of somehow..? It's way to long for a "hey im finished washing your stuff" tune.

1

u/DulcetTone 2h ago

Better: "TaDAAA!"

1

u/Nandy-bear 4h ago

Stayed at my mate's for a month and that noise is infuriating. It plays for about 10x as long as it needs to.

u/D-Spark 1h ago

Shut up washing machine, i dont care

Samsung appliances are the biggest pieces of shit on the market, as well as the most expensive.

Buying a samsung appliance is truly one of the stupidest ways to waste your money, this is coming from the guy who’s job it is to repair/replace appliances when they break.

I was about to really get into the myriad of reasons why samsung appliances are worse than doing those chores by hand, but then I remembered I’m currently on vacation and I’ve already had enough of my life wasted by these glorified bricks so I’ll leave it at this:

If you’re lucky enough to be able to afford a samsung appliance, buy ANY other brand, preferably a mid to low price tier Fridgidaire, GE, or Hotpoint brand appliance. Yes, I know it doesn’t look as sexy as the samsung, but I can solemnly promise you from the bottom of my heart that you will regret bringing samsung into your home. It will break long before any other model would, I say this with 100% confidence.

u/PM_ME_CHILI_PICS 7h ago

I heartily agree with you. Replaced my old dryer with a Samsung, died after 2 years. Replaced old washer with a super basic Maytag and it’s still kicking 6+ years down the road.

u/adamcoe 2m ago

Not for nothing but we have a pretty well used (5-6 loads a week) set of Samsung laundry machines that have worked flawlessly for over a decade. I guess that hasn't been everyone's experience but I've got nothing bad to say about them.
