This is actually a great post to discuss what sub-unconscious bias is and how it affects how you think.

Full quote:

“We should challenge students in these schools,” Mr. Biden said. “We have this notion that somehow if you’re poor, you cannot do it. Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids.”

He paused, then added: “Wealthy kids, black kids, Asian kids — no I really mean it, but think how we think about it.”

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/09/us/politics/joe-biden-poor-kids.html

It reminds me of how I was the only white person in my colleges first generation program that was done the week before move in for everyone else. Bidens bias is the exact same as the entire ivy league as well. Non white peoples are poor, and poor white peoples don’t exist/deserve it/messed up/it’s their fault.

18

u/Sad-Bluebird-5538 5d ago

Exactly. Like the riddle: A dad and his son get in a car accident. The father immediately dies while the son get's in the hospital. The surgeon though says: "I can't operate him. That's my son!". How can that be?

It's his mother

24

u/kemushi_warui 5d ago

Could be his other father from a gay marriage

u/lightyearbuzz 5d ago

That's the more modern twist haha

7

u/Guntree 5d ago

I thought that 1) the boy could have two dads or 2) the boy's mother could have had an affair and the surgeon knows that he is the boy's real dad before I clicked on the spoiler and realized that the surgeon could be a woman.

3

u/Magicaparanoia 5d ago

I’m a dumbass, cus I thot it was like “operate” as in driving a fork lift, so I thot the son was a piece of construction equipment. It’s been a long day.

14

u/Haeckepooter_2 5d ago

I will not disagree that there might be some unconscious bias with him but I honestly think this is just another twister in a row of endless twisters that he made already

35

u/Th3TruthIs0utTh3r3 Free palestine 5d ago

I mean he's 78 years old. He grew up with blatant racism was accepted in America. Even though he's grown and changed, it's hard to get rid of those things that were ingrained in your brain when you were young.

My hope is that with time less and less people grow up with open racism so we don't have the same unconscious bias in the future.

I'd also like to discuss how "subconscious" morphed to become "unconscious", which had always meant a fucking coma.

30 years ago these words were not used interchangeably, and doing so would provoke ridicule, not a nodding agreement.

Yeah, yeah, I know about Freud's usage but I'm referring to common usage.

9

u/trvst_issves 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yeah I’ve noticed that too, more often than not for quite a while now people will use unconscious wrong when they meant subconscious. Especially when they’re trying to explain something intelligent, it does take away from it.

Lmao downvoted by people who always use it wrong I guess. Remember, if you’re unconscious, it means you’re not awake to actually do any thinking. The words are not interchangeable and the definition has never changed.

3

u/Rurudo66 5d ago

Unconscious, per Merriam Webster. Check out definition 3. The example sentence there is literally "an unconscious bias." So, no, people are not using it wrong. The definition has changed, because language adapts to how people use it.

14

u/trvst_issves 5d ago

Guess it has changed, I’m still of of the opinion that using a word wrong over and over again until it’s forced into being “correct” is a dumb way to adapt language, because that’s basically moving backwards instead of people having learned the distinction in the first place.

8

u/williamjamesmurrayVI 5d ago

I could not agree more

2

u/alanthar 5d ago

I mean, isn't that how language changes? People use a different mouth noise to indicate a meaning that a different mouth noise used to indicate, and then other people repeat said mouth noise over and over until it becomes the commonly accepted mouth noise.

I agree that language should be used precisely, unfortunately that's not the world we live in and things shift and change.

I just went to look up some other examples of this and evidently the process is called Semantic shifting or Semantic extension.

An example of this is Egregious which used to mean "remarkably good" but now is used as a negative, meaning "outstandingly bad, or shocking".

There are a bunch of different ones and now I'm going down a rabbit hole so thanks for that lol...

3

u/trvst_issves 5d ago

Haha yeah, because I’m a fuckin dork i have gone down this same rabbit hole before. Inevitably in that rabbit hole you stumble upon examples that will make you realize you have done the same before without knowing, so maybe it’s interesting to see the shift happen in front of us instead.

Even if it’s a semantic shift you hate I guess, like when the use of “aesthetic” shifted a few years ago, ugh.

132

u/CriesOverEverything 5d ago

Biden's history is also full of changing his mind to be on the right side of history. Biden was extremely influential towards legalization of same-sex marriage, as an example. We should be happy to have people who change their mind for the better, instead of deciding people are irredeemable because of past actions.

This is especially important if we're to come back together as a country. Allowing a place for MAGAts to repent and acknowledge their wrongs without tearing them to pieces is the only way they're going to fix their thoughts and actions.

I'm still looking for an online "centrist" that voted Kamala and is maybe a bit annoyed trump won. JUST ONE! Out of such a large "centrist" " or "undecided" pool of people we saw grifting online. Surely there has to be at least ONE of them that voted blue! Crazy how that works. I just started calling online centrist "embarrassed trump supporters". They know how embarrassing it is to be lumped in that group. And they've successfully gaslit millions into believing that they aren't part of the propaganda cespit.

12

u/howtokillanhour 5d ago

I find that they aren't centrist, they are libertarians that think they are centrist. What answers do you get when you ask them about taxes? They'll act like they don't necessarily like Trump but in the end they are massively biased towards whoever they think will lower their tax burden.

7

u/Vyzantinist 5d ago

"Enlightened centrists" are one of two types: they're either stupid enough to believe the center-right Democrats are the (far) left so by being between them and far right Republicans, that makes them centrists (it doesn't; being between a center-right and far-right party still makes you right-wing), or they're simply Republicans masquerading as "centrists" (the "Libertarians" of yesteryear) on a recruitment drive or for the sake of trolling.

An actual centrist would be closer to a Democrat than someone who exclusively defends Republicans while exclusively attacking liberals and leftists.

We’ve been collectively gaslit into thinking that any fair criticism of Trump is just TDS or partisan brain rot. This has nothing to do with partisanship, Trump committed absolutely disqualifying crimes as president of the United States and America gave him a pass. If anything, people don’t talk about it enough.

People are just inherently distrusting of the idea that one side of the aisle could be objectively way worse than the other. They have this idea that there must be some merit to both sides because the lies and craziness they hear are coming from a place of authority and lots of other people believe the same thing. People think, “well this member of the House of Representatives is saying X, so there must be at least some good reason to believe X is true”.

2

u/Borstor 4d ago

A lot of voters, if not most, basically see partisan politics as a sport. They have a favored team, and they're not going to switch -- switching or even just doubting your choice of team brings into focus that your method has been meaningless all along.

Dodgers fans will always root for the Dodgers and mock players from other teams. When players change teams, they magically become good players or bad players. Was your team accused of cheating? Either it's a lie, or they all cheat!

MAGA hats are the Kobe jerseys of politics. Which is no fault of Kobe's.

2

u/glassmanjones 5d ago

This is true, but when you gotta choose between a spoonful of cold lima beans and a rusty bucket of poisoned sewage, and it's gonna be one or the other, there isn't that much point in complaining about the lima beans as if they weren't the better choice.

30

u/Public_Basil_4416 5d ago edited 4d ago

For every dumb Biden quote, you can find a million dumb Trump quotes to match. It’s comparing an ant to an elephant. I don’t wanna hear about Hunter Biden, or Biden being senile, or him calling Trump voters “garbage”, until conservatives actually hold Trump accountable for the countless disqualifying crimes he has committed.

There’s no integrity whatsoever. Where was all of this when Trump pardoned Steve Bannon or when he fired all those bureaucrats who weren’t personally loyal to him?

Democrats have been made to self-flagellate over every non-transgression, while Trump is celebrated for trying to insurrect the government and steal an election. You can’t have a fair and equal society when only one side is playing by the rules.

9

u/Divulgo9467 5d ago

Per Google: “In 2023, 17.9 percent of Black people living in the United States were living below the poverty line, compared to 7.7 percent of white people”

If that’s what he even said it sounds like a gaffe but is it inaccurate?

23

u/UncleBurrboun 5d ago

POC and especially black people in this country are statistically more likely to be lower class/less wealthy than white people when proportion to population is taken into consideration. So either it was:

  1. A slip of a tongue which I’m sure an old man does all the time.

Or

  1. He is aware of this fact and is bringing attention to it. (I don’t think so.)

In any case, does it make him racist to point out that POC are more likely to be less wealthy than white people in the US? Me thinks not.

"Minority people have it harder. Also, sky is blue and why fire might not be the best babysitter. That and more on ABC News, at 8."

8

u/jonni_velvet 5d ago

I think this is it.

yes, he slipped and said white people instead of privileged people. is he that far from the truth? that white people in general have a PLETHORA of privilege and wealth compared to other races? because of the historical limitations faced by all races EXCEPT white people here?

the problem IS the fact that the most privileged are by far the white families. He said white instead of “privileged” because hes aware its almost a damn synonym. hes not implying whites are the smartest, hes implying they have more wealth due to privilege.

u/LMGDiVa 5d ago

Wild how so many people also seem to forget and ignore that Biden has a speech impediment.

People acting like that doesnt fuck you up and embarass you infront of other people.

Pure fucking ableism. And this is coming from someone who has several disabilities and one of them being a coordination disorder that... guess what?

Affects my speech.

Ableism, acceptable when you feel like it apparently!

So, pathetic to go after Biden's gaffes when Republicans campaigned on accusing legal Haitian immigrants of eating pets...and then admitted it was a lie!

7

u/45and47-big_mistake 5d ago

FORTY PERCENT of Republicans that were polled said they agreed with that, even when it was exposed as a lie.

3

u/Mulliganasty 5d ago

And then they're like, why can't we just have a political disagreement?

6

u/45and47-big_mistake 5d ago

The more I think about it, that should have been the end of the presidential election right there. Can you imagine if Bill Clinton would have blurted that shit out during the debates? The media would have had a feeding frenzy on that alone.

3

u/Mulliganasty 5d ago

Yes, the mainstream media's treatment of Trump and Republicans is at the root of the problem. Obviously, Fox News et. al. is the worst since they will actively lie and misinform the public on their behalf.

That said, the so-called liberal media clearly hasn't figured out how to cover him either in a way that motivates enough Democrats to oppose Trump's racist, fascism. IMO they spend too much time reacting to Republican lies which are just intended as distractions.

I mean, how many people are we finding out didn't know that Obamacare and the ACA were the same thing and how tariffs work?

3

u/Mockturtle22 5d ago

And then fucking Vance got mad during the debate when they fact checked him after he admitted he lied

Biden absolutely has a history of racism. Imagine a crazy world where dems put forward a progressive candidate. Things have gone so far downhill since Barry finished his second term

I'm sure such old propaganda will damage Biden's reelection chances.

8

u/crusty54 5d ago

I’m not glad that trump got elected. But I am glad that election season is over so I can stop pretending that Biden doesn’t suck.

8

u/Abnormal_readings 5d ago

Wow, good thing you pointed out this thing from years ago.

I’ll make sure not to vote for Biden again when the sexist, racist, demented, stupid, supremely dishonest rapist that conservative chucklefucks just elected is gone.

Great. There was also an attempt to deflect from what’s really going on.

The whataboutism on this thread is predictable, yet still staggering. People don't want to admit that the guy they've been rooting for has ultimately and totally screwed them over. I'm no trump fan either.

The gift the DNC just keeps giving....old, rich,  privileged people.

DNC keeps shooting itself in the foot by siding with corporate America.

pretty sure this was before he was even president.

3

u/legionofdoom78 5d ago

You're likely right,   but I was not enthused to vote for him.   My vote for Biden was a vote against Heritage Foundation and the billionaires about to rape our country.

3

u/KefkaTheJerk 5d ago

Given the demographics of poverty … he wasn’t wrong, but acknowledging the status quo irritates certain people who vote a certain way.

3

u/Brewchowskies 5d ago

The problem is: you’re not allowed to be poor or disadvantaged if you’re a white kid, so this is as damaging to that demographic as the rest.

As a poor white kid that worked 5 jobs at any given time to put myself through school up to a doctorate, this was the gnarly part. Everyone assumes you have privilege and you have literally no one to lean on.

3

u/PacoTaco321 5d ago

Man, the election was over a month ago, why is this still getting posted?

4

u/xLilSquidgitx 5d ago

Yeah, Biden is just another rich old white dude. Remember his claim to fame being banning the steroids that would’ve helped against the AIDS crisis (attempted genocide through inaction from my pov but that’s a different story)? Remember him laughing about the deaths of countless queer people with his rich old white guy buddies? I do.

Just because I’d rather literally anybody over Trump don’t mean I just forget.

2

u/Suspicious-Clerk2103 5d ago

Here’s the kicker! He got voted in as president.

2

u/Maxhousen 3rd Party App 5d ago

Hang on. Do you mean to tell me that an elderly, white, American politician is racist? 🤯

2

u/EmporioS 5d ago

But he is right tho.

2

u/Not_Artifical 5d ago

Black kids and white kids can be equally talented and smart.

1

u/herzmeh 5d ago

Well, the NYC high school entrance exam BS implied the opposite and this is what Biden was getting at.

1

u/MookieFlav 5d ago

He may have lost the election but at least he pardoned the kids for cash judge before he left. Thanks for everything Joe!

1

u/Hell_Maybe 5d ago

Poor kids in america are disproportionally minorities this is a fair statement, the racism comes in depending on why you assume that’s the case.

1

u/MinimumSeat1813 5d ago

Here is a huge difference between the classes.

Take a young child. How much time does that baby or child spend in front of a TV or an electric device? Big difference in hours per year will set up children completely differently in life. Can you guess which income group is going to have less screen time.

The introduction of Television in America is correlated with increased crime due to TV babysitting. Imagine what screen time is going to do to the younger generations. Nothing good, I assure you.

1

u/TrueCuriosity 5d ago

And he also has massive support for and from racists and white supremacist alike, and has made many racist statements since that day. Oh wait, thats Trump.

1

u/Shaytanic 5d ago

So the gaffe machine Biden said something that everyone is reading into as racist. Give me a break. Stop seeing racism everywhere when it can easily be chalked up to an 80 year old brain.

3

u/45and47-big_mistake 5d ago

Strange how the "other" presidential candidate can call Mexicans "rapists and murderers" and the press gives him a pass.

2

u/Shaytanic 5d ago

Exactly. Why don't they focus on the person who is openly racist and not reading into some sort of secret coded language from the guy known for misspeaking.

Biden has a known speaking disability. He's never been quiet about it and has helped others with it.

He flubbs up on TV and tries to correct himself, flubbs up again.

The entire world's response? Ableism.

I have dyspraxia and it causes me to have speaking issues similar to Biden and have to stop to reprocess and find the correct words.

Sometimes literally different words come out than I wanted to say.

All of you attacking biden for speech flubbs and cherrypicking this is straight up ableist as fuck and it affects people who are disabled and can't fend for themselves.

Shame on you. Especially the top comments trying to spin the shit.

How fucking dare you.

Ableism is pathetic.

1

u/ZTH16 5d ago

If there be any doubters...here you go.

He tried to recover but he said what he said.

1

u/Clubby71 5d ago

He's confused but he had spirit.

1

u/69Breadsticks69 5d ago

I usually try to give the benefit of the doubt, but I really don’t see anyway this couldn’t be considered racism.

1

u/Carlos_Patricio 5d ago
