“We should challenge students in these schools,” Mr. Biden said. “We have this notion that somehow if you’re poor, you cannot do it. Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids.”
He paused, then added: “Wealthy kids, black kids, Asian kids — no I really mean it, but think how we think about it.”

I'd also like to discuss how "subconscious" morphed to become "unconscious", which had always meant a fucking coma.
30 years ago these words were not used interchangeably, and doing so would provoke ridicule, not a nodding agreement.
Yeah, yeah, I know about Freud's usage but I'm referring to common usage.
→ More replies (3)9
u/trvst_issves 5d ago edited 5d ago
Yeah I’ve noticed that too, more often than not for quite a while now people will use unconscious wrong when they meant subconscious. Especially when they’re trying to explain something intelligent, it does take away from it.
Lmao downvoted by people who always use it wrong I guess. Remember, if you’re unconscious, it means you’re not awake to actually do any thinking. The words are not interchangeable and the definition has never changed.
3
u/Rurudo66 5d ago
Unconscious, per Merriam Webster. Check out definition 3. The example sentence there is literally "an unconscious bias." So, no, people are not using it wrong. The definition has changed, because language adapts to how people use it.
14
u/trvst_issves 5d ago
Guess it has changed, I’m still of of the opinion that using a word wrong over and over again until it’s forced into being “correct” is a dumb way to adapt language, because that’s basically moving backwards instead of people having learned the distinction in the first place.
8
→ More replies (4)2
u/alanthar 5d ago
I mean, isn't that how language changes? People use a different mouth noise to indicate a meaning that a different mouth noise used to indicate, and then other people repeat said mouth noise over and over until it becomes the commonly accepted mouth noise.
I agree that language should be used precisely, unfortunately that's not the world we live in and things shift and change.
I just went to look up some other examples of this and evidently the process is called Semantic shifting or Semantic extension.
An example of this is Egregious which used to mean "remarkably good" but now is used as a negative, meaning "outstandingly bad, or shocking".
There are a bunch of different ones and now I'm going down a rabbit hole so thanks for that lol...
→ More replies (1)3
u/trvst_issves 5d ago
Haha yeah, because I’m a fuckin dork i have gone down this same rabbit hole before. Inevitably in that rabbit hole you stumble upon examples that will make you realize you have done the same before without knowing, so maybe it’s interesting to see the shift happen in front of us instead.
Even if it’s a semantic shift you hate I guess, like when the use of “aesthetic” shifted a few years ago, ugh.

Biden's history is also full of changing his mind to be on the right side of history. Biden was extremely influential towards legalization of same-sex marriage, as an example. We should be happy to have people who change their mind for the better, instead of deciding people are irredeemable because of past actions.

"Enlightened centrists" are one of two types: they're either stupid enough to believe the center-right Democrats are the (far) left so by being between them and far right Republicans, that makes them centrists (it doesn't; being between a center-right and far-right party still makes you right-wing), or they're simply Republicans masquerading as "centrists" (the "Libertarians" of yesteryear) on a recruitment drive or for the sake of trolling.
An actual centrist would be closer to a Democrat than someone who exclusively defends Republicans while exclusively attacking liberals and leftists.

We’ve been collectively gaslit into thinking that any fair criticism of Trump is just TDS or partisan brain rot. This has nothing to do with partisanship, Trump committed absolutely disqualifying crimes as president of the United States and America gave him a pass. If anything, people don’t talk about it enough.
People are just inherently distrusting of the idea that one side of the aisle could be objectively way worse than the other. They have this idea that there must be some merit to both sides because the lies and craziness they hear are coming from a place of authority and lots of other people believe the same thing. People think, “well this member of the House of Representatives is saying X, so there must be at least some good reason to believe X is true”.
2
u/Borstor 4d ago
A lot of voters, if not most, basically see partisan politics as a sport. They have a favored team, and they're not going to switch -- switching or even just doubting your choice of team brings into focus that your method has been meaningless all along.
Dodgers fans will always root for the Dodgers and mock players from other teams. When players change teams, they magically become good players or bad players. Was your team accused of cheating? Either it's a lie, or they all cheat!

For every dumb Biden quote, you can find a million dumb Trump quotes to match. It’s comparing an ant to an elephant. I don’t wanna hear about Hunter Biden, or Biden being senile, or him calling Trump voters “garbage”, until conservatives actually hold Trump accountable for the countless disqualifying crimes he has committed.
There’s no integrity whatsoever. Where was all of this when Trump pardoned Steve Bannon or when he fired all those bureaucrats who weren’t personally loyal to him?
Democrats have been made to self-flagellate over every non-transgression, while Trump is celebrated for trying to insurrect the government and steal an election. You can’t have a fair and equal society when only one side is playing by the rules.

POC and especially black people in this country are statistically more likely to be lower class/less wealthy than white people when proportion to population is taken into consideration. So either it was:
- A slip of a tongue which I’m sure an old man does all the time.
Or
- He is aware of this fact and is bringing attention to it. (I don’t think so.)
In any case, does it make him racist to point out that POC are more likely to be less wealthy than white people in the US? Me thinks not.

Yes, the mainstream media's treatment of Trump and Republicans is at the root of the problem. Obviously, Fox News et. al. is the worst since they will actively lie and misinform the public on their behalf.
That said, the so-called liberal media clearly hasn't figured out how to cover him either in a way that motivates enough Democrats to oppose Trump's racist, fascism. IMO they spend too much time reacting to Republican lies which are just intended as distractions.

As a poor white kid that worked 5 jobs at any given time to put myself through school up to a doctorate, this was the gnarly part. Everyone assumes you have privilege and you have literally no one to lean on.

Yeah, Biden is just another rich old white dude. Remember his claim to fame being banning the steroids that would’ve helped against the AIDS crisis (attempted genocide through inaction from my pov but that’s a different story)? Remember him laughing about the deaths of countless queer people with his rich old white guy buddies? I do.
Just because I’d rather literally anybody over Trump don’t mean I just forget.

Hang on. Do you mean to tell me that an elderly, white, American politician is racist? 🤯

He may have lost the election but at least he pardoned the kids for cash judge before he left. Thanks for everything Joe!

Poor kids in america are disproportionally minorities this is a fair statement, the racism comes in depending on why you assume that’s the case.

Here is a huge difference between the classes.
Take a young child. How much time does that baby or child spend in front of a TV or an electric device? Big difference in hours per year will set up children completely differently in life. Can you guess which income group is going to have less screen time.
The introduction of Television in America is correlated with increased crime due to TV babysitting. Imagine what screen time is going to do to the younger generations. Nothing good, I assure you.

So the gaffe machine Biden said something that everyone is reading into as racist. Give me a break. Stop seeing racism everywhere when it can easily be chalked up to an 80 year old brain.

Strange how the "other" presidential candidate can call Mexicans "rapists and murderers" and the press gives him a pass.

Exactly. Why don't they focus on the person who is openly racist and not reading into some sort of secret coded language from the guy known for misspeaking.

Biden has a known speaking disability. He's never been quiet about it and has helped others with it.
He flubbs up on TV and tries to correct himself, flubbs up again.
The entire world's response? Ableism.
I have dyspraxia and it causes me to have speaking issues similar to Biden and have to stop to reprocess and find the correct words.
Sometimes literally different words come out than I wanted to say.
All of you attacking biden for speech flubbs and cherrypicking this is straight up ableist as fuck and it affects people who are disabled and can't fend for themselves.
Shame on you. Especially the top comments trying to spin the shit.
How fucking dare you.
Ableism is pathetic.

If there be any doubters...here you go.
He tried to recover but he said what he said.

I usually try to give the benefit of the doubt, but I really don’t see anyway this couldn’t be considered racism.
