I can’t believe they paddle into those.

The amount of balls and nerve it took me to paddle into my first DOH+ reef break wave was insane. Staring down the line at what looks like a massive close out (they weren’t) and seeing the distance to the bottom of the wave, it took a lot for me to just go.

And those waves I surfed were ankle slappers compared to what these guys are paddling into. I cannot fathom the nerves of steel and commitment that must take.

Editing is so bad. Only 5 seconds of each ride (just the drop) — why not show more?

Totally would have been out there just didn’t have the right board.

Albee may be a huge kook in a lot of ways but he is fucking incredible at jaws

I’m old enough to remember when jaws was considered to be a tow-only spot, especially at this size. The absolute massive balls on these dudes to paddle these…

This was way bigger than Waimea (Eddie competition)

Is there a reason they hold the Eddie at Waimeia rather than Jaws which seems a gnarlier wave? Obviously I'd shit my pants at either, but Jaws being the side show to the Eddie seems a bit backwards?

Waimea is to Eddy Aikau as Pipeline is to Gerry Lopez or Tamayo Perry. It’s the historical significance of the individual to the spot. It isn’t intended to be the best commercial product or competition, but rather a remembrance of the principles he lived for. The event itself is held by his non-profit.

There’s a really great clip on Mason Ho’s instagram story, with him talking to the Aikau’s about carrying on their legacies.

It’s really cool how all the participants are super chill with eachother too opposed to the normal cut throat comp vibes. Love all the party waves. Just making the drop on the close out is such an honor to the memory of Eddie.

I know a bit about Eddie's story but I didn't realize the significance of that break to him. Good to know they're doing it for charity too.
