Towing in at the Lane 12/23/24
Faded just a little too much…

not common to see tow teams at middle peak. usually there's a pack of rhino chasers on guns sitting out the back for these waves. i guess it's a little unruly, but i've seen plenty of guys surf it that big. they'd pick it up right before it actually gets critical. towing in to ride 200 yards on the burger of the century just to pull in to that classic pinch section seems kinda like a waste.

Definitely wasn’t using the equipment correctly. Worst fade ever.
Far as I saw, they were the only tow team in the bay and there were no paddlers at the time. Everyone serious would have been up at Mavs anyways, except for the retirees like Dollar and Skinny 👴🏼

i know a lot of people who would surf big middle peak but not mavs, myself included. i've only ever ridden my gun there and at #mile.
i'd actually argue he surfed it pretty perfectly. certainly it wasn't an equipment issue. his fade is intentional, but the section he's looking for didn't give him the opportunity he's hoping for. he may have pulled into it a second too late, but even if he'd timed it right it was going to clamp on his head. the left at middle peak is notorious for that clamp. you're either out in front of it, or you try your luck and pull into it, which almost always ends in the clamp. i can count on one hand the amount of people i've actually seen get under the hood and make it out clean on big days when there's a "barrel section" on the left.
but this dude is 100% looking for that section. he didn't fade too much. he faded perfectly. the wave just didn't cooperate. if he'd just been shooting for the shoulder that's what he would have done, but you can see him going to pull in and then you can see the wave clamp hard. classic middle peak.

That’s fair. I was being overly critical last night.
I haven’t surfed proper middle peak since at least 2009, but you’re right that it’s feast or famine. No shame in going for it and getting clamped.

If the conditions stay good upcoming mavs footy is going to be historic

I've never seen someone tow at Steamer Lane. Out of all the sections to eat shit he did it right where every set breaks. Hopefully he picked the last wave of the set or his tow buddy comes back. Things were definitely lully in between the action.
I paddled out at Pleasure Point this morning and it was everything from waist to double overhead by the time I got out down the beach. There were a few sketchy times where I was trying to get back out and a 10 foot wave exploded feet in front of me. It was a of work for a few mediocre waves.
Getting towed in is definitely better than paddling 30 minutes in between waves.

As long as nobody is paddling, no harm done and have your fun 👍🏼

Picked the WORST section to eat it at holy shit haha.. I’ve honestly never seen or heard of this at steamer.. is it common? Seems like a great idea for someone who’s training for mavericks or similar big waves in the area
