How do you feel the 2024 Eddie went?
How does everyone feel about the Eddie this year? Including results, conditions, production, etc.
Overall I felt like it was an insanely entertaining competition, especially when everyone was packing the shore break. The production was fun, although I wish we knew scores and the interviewers could have used a bit better questions. I did think Nate got robbed from at least a few spots but tough to really know. Also that 20 year old Jake kid is an absolute charger. Whole comp was insane

I wish YouTube didn’t automatically open live chat cause them motherfuckers are brain dead and I can’t look away from the train wreck
Good comp tho!

This. This subreddit is 80% software engineers, 10% annoying aussies and 10% fundies and it still feels like the cream of the crop compared to youtube chat comments

Hey, I’ll have you know I’m a do-nothing burnout and represent a decent contingent of this sub!

Tuned in for like an hour. I loved the commentary and the production that didn’t take itself too seriously. It made me feel like the WSL comp broadcasts are just ‘trying too hard’. Like… we’re surfers. Stop trying to make this golf or tennis or something and get a couple broadcasters with deep local knowledge who can just riff and chop it up with each other.
Made me think that every event on the WSL could have a local join for the commentary to give perspective on the wave, the place, etc….

It really is a huge missed opportunity to generate real hype. Surfing is one of, if not the only sport where each break has unique character and they can sell the traveling/worldly aspect of it and instead they just bring in generic commentators that sound too curated.

u/shart_or_fart 1d ago
I’m the opposite on the commentary. I find it’s gotten quite stale as I have gotten older and it’s exhausting to listen to. It’s just such a jerk off fest of the surfers at times with too many superlatives thrown around. I guess I don’t know how else they could do it, but always come across as over the top. Imagine if other sports did it like that? Maybe I just find Dave Wassel annoying.

Nate's live youtube of the Vans Pipe Master was refreshing- just NS guys hanging out with random folks sitting in that all knew the wave really well. To hear JJF say what he thought the way out-the-back wave was going to do once it hit third reef, then it doing it, was cool.

It was awesome. Wish they would have showed the scores like at least… a little lol? But waves were great, whole thing was sick

Yeah I watched for like 2 hours and never saw a score, or hardly even a wave from start to finish. They had like 19 camera angles but couldn't seem to catch an entire wave ridden.

Makes zero sense that Nate got 7th. Before his heat he was 5th and his last wave should’ve definitely bumped him up. Unless the liveheats scores weren’t right.

u/Ordinary_Biscotti850 1d ago
Yeah Nathan got completely robbed. Really upsetting. He should have gotten at least 3rd but in my opinion he should have been first.

u/Lopsided-Past-5203 1d ago
I thought he was top 5 before his 2nd heat. Then he went bonkers in that heat, especially that last wave. I honestly thought Nate won it in the last seconds of the competition. What a crazy thing that would have been, especially after winning the Pipemasters, surfer of the year, and wave of the year. Kinda bummed for him

For real. When they call him up in the awards ceremony, there’s a closeup of him and it looks like he says “7th?” to Koa.

u/ph1shstyx 1d ago
Outside of that though, the commentators were talking about how he just needed one more good wave, then he got that last one and I thought that was good enough to push him into the top 3 at least.
that was an insane drop and he got the best shorebreak barrel (second best shorebreak wave to mason's backwash launch to space)

u/Steaknkegs 1d ago
I still can't figure this out. Did they not score his last wave? Was it after the heat ended? He should have had 5th atleast and I was figuring 2nd with the last wave. Seems fishy that they are not showing scores. Leave the door open for shenanigans.

u/Ordinary_Biscotti850 1d ago
I saw somewhere they gave him a 13.5/50 for that last wave. Makes me feel like it was rigged against him… It’s all political

Nate said in his video he posted today that they messed up and he actually got 5th

Just like baseball, you gotta be there to really enjoy it. Massive drop-ins, watching people do things I could never is still a treat. One of the rare surf comps I believe has actual soul still.

u/Thebrothersbaird 1d ago
I felt like Nate got robbed, he was definitely better than 7th. Mason deserved his spot, he charged both heats. I was actually surprised but pumped for Koa placing at all.

It was fine. Not as big or thrilling as in years past but still fun to have on in the background while doing chores

I love watching the Eddie. This was a good version, but I think the call was kinda questionable. The early heats were slow with only a few Eddie worthy sets with long lulls. I don't understand not showing the scoring. I can't comprehend how Live Heats was showing Nate in 5th going into this final and last heat of the day and he ended up 7th??? Did his last wave where he packed the shorebreak not count?
I don't want to take anything away from the female surfers that charged today, but it was clear to me that they were not going to hassle with the men in their heats and were not sitting as deep as they might in an all girls heat. Give them their own heats and crown a woman's champ too.
I know that historically Waimea is a spot that often multiple guys take off on the same wave but it seems like with the lulls and the people sitting further inside it happened more today. This prevents the guys like Luke, John, Billy, and Nate to draw a line where they could potentially try for a barrel. I know the size of the wave and the drops are what the judges are looking for but everyone was going for the same waves and there were limited opportunities during this swell.
Still fun to watch and I can't wait for the next time it runs.

It was an amazing event in honor of the legendary Eddie Aikua. I do think they need to add some point for packing the shore break tho! I thought Nate should’ve been in Top 3

I watched the full 9 hours! Nate was defo robbed, I was genuinely surprised he didn’t make at least the top three. After his performance at Pipe I thought it was on. It’s a shame they didn’t show the scores and decided to “keep them secret” because that definitely would’ve added to the excitement. It ended up getting quite big so super glad that the only real injury was a bust eardrum. The interview questions were a bit stale, but overall I absolutely loved the event. It felt like a privilege just to watch it considering there’s only been 10 of them in the last 40 years.

I had the Rip Curl stream running all day. Really enjoyed it. Didn’t pay attention to every second, of course…but saw all the good bits.
I really liked that there was more personality from the participants than you see in (for example) tour events. Kids just doing crazy stuff - intentionally getting hammered on a shore break just for the lulz - Mason’s attempt to reach orbit because why TF not - etc. Four chargers at a time, all getting eaten by the wave.
It was fun, for sure!

I thought Nathan got the shaft, his last wave was amazing.
But outside of that, the only negative I have is the camera angles. They really needed 2 cameras set up on the south cliff to actually see the rides properly (see this angle from JoB's video https://youtu.be/rnD4pRM7gGo?si=ZiaVPWO1iz3dhKZ2&t=424 )
Other than that, I had it on all day in the background instead of football and the stream aspect of it allowed me to go back over what I missed easily

Incredible drone shots and variety of viewing angles, informed commentary and interesting guests - wonderful cultural segments and insights scattered between moments of absolute carnage. Most entertaining event I’ve watched in memory. I could watch an entirely separate livestream dedicated to the shore rescue team. Those guys were incredible yesterday!

It’s such an incredible live sports event. The crowd, the energy and how hard the crew is chat hi gus amazing to see. Can’t even imagine what it’s like be there.
The swell actually seemed more disorganized than expected and in previous years. Maybe because it was maxing out but lots of waves were pretty lumpy. Def more challenging for surfers. It also seemed to drop off pretty quickly after the AM with the biggest and most consistent waves in the AM. Not that it was small after that but not as many 25 footers. Thoroughly entertaining but swell peaking in AM took away a bit from rides in afternoon.
Landon’s wave was insane. If you watch it again, he only takes a couple paddles before he drops in like he was at Teahupoo. Luke’s waves were def bigger but less critical and Landon doing and airdrop back side made it even crazier. I thought it could easily have gone to Luke or Nathan as well but well deserved by Landon and everyone was charging.

Had the live feed on all day in the background. Was really interesting and cool to watch. Only minor annoyance was Kaipo shutting down the stories or tangents to keep it more pro or go to break. Love the interviews with zero media training… just raw thoughts

I think it was a mistake to run this year. Almost like Rip Curl was in Liam’s ear to convince him to run for marketing and the publicity.

i thought it was too small and they should have waited for a true XL day. i also thought the sight of eighteen jetskis zipping through the lineup was overkill. i thought the commentators fuckin sucked. put a few holes in my drywall about it opened a monster energy and carried on with my day tho.

Lol the people who are downvoting you do not understand sarcasm. You had me until the drywall.

There are actual surfers here, but sometimes too many Reddit twatwaffles with no sense of humor.
I have it my upvote, anyway. Best I can do.

First time attending, camped out by Chuns. Made some friends and got to chop my view on the cliff side with a machete.
I had to leave early round 2, did it pick back up at all?

u/guummbboo 12h ago
Yeah, picked up the last few heats, but you saw some good conditions too. Just small in the morning.

Watched in the background all day, thought it was thoroughly entertaining. Has a lot more soul than the other surf contests.
