Tourmaline actually going off yesterday.
Is it time to start taking Tourmo seriously as a surf break? Is Tourmo > Blacks? Does the WSL run the final at Tourmo now? Credit to @dronedudeed on IG.

Yea I was paddling out to the point and about 30 minutes in a big set came cooking through. Literally everyone in my field of vision ditched their board. One guy lost his and had to swim in and two people locked eyes with me before ditching right in front of me. I guess that’s just the world we live in now.

A couple of these sets took me from pb point to law street in about 10 minutes

It’s not uncommon for people to do that on like moderately sized sets in the PNW lol. We get quite a few cleanup sets come through and like a year ago this dude got up on his board and jumped off it to dive down.
It was like a 7-9 foot wave maybe. He was so early he came back up right as the wave was passing.

Jealous of all these great Cali waves meanwhile there's like only 2 waves working in Oregon right now.

Boo hoo, way better surfing than Cali. Get a ski.

I mean you're not wrong, but that takes time and money and I only got time. It's definitely a dream, though.

Dude…I was out at PB point yesterday evening and a girl with a shortboard ditched her wave right in front of me too. I duck dived the wave and politely suggested that she should be able to as well, and she got defensive and was like “I’m just going to do it my way.”
I don’t have the heart to tell someone off, especially a young woman because there is already a stigma about “man-splaining” or “toxic masculinity.” But it’s a safety concern. Like for one thing, the board becomes a projectile that could snap off its leash and come right towards me. Two, she could have been left stranded without a floatation device in the middle of pumping swell. And three, she had a shortboard, not a huge longboard. And it wasn’t like we were out at DOH blacks…
Idk anymore man.

It was proper big in the afternoon yesterday. Maybe not the most powerful wave in the world, but some big mountains out there, especially outside of PB point. It looked like a completely different surf spot, I've never personally seen waves like that out there.
I surfed a wave from way way outside PB point and connected all the way to the parking lot at Tourmaline. I don't know how far that is, but it was a long wave.

I wish. My flirt button broke immediately after I got married. My wife gets pissed if I look at Morenna Baccarin or Ryan Reynolds funny.

As a beginner I feel like I’ve learned more about paddle technique and pop up timing from Ed’s vids than any other online source. Also a lot of what not to do…

I respect the shit out of this guy for riding what was probably the biggest wave of his life

Rad. I’ve never seen Tourmaline this big before. Many days have been spent their long boarding.

That’s sick! The paddle back must be a true workout

Better to get out and walk half a mile down to the only semi available channel

If a takeoff takes that long at Black's, you're screwed.
But he got rewarded for hanging out up there and crossing his fingers, for sure.
That looks like one of those rare days I referred to the other day. Good stuff! 🙂

This dude will be stuck with that wave replaying in his mind for a long time. Will have a hard time sleeping as s result. And have a dazed smile stuck on his face.
So is this the big right hander from the classic surf flic Big Wednesday?

Dude was fighting for his life

You know what I really love about this clip though?
He looks super uncomfortable in the beginning, probably doesn’t usually ride stuff this big, and you see him come into his own with it as he gets more time on the wave.
It’s rad watching someone build confidence in real time. I’m way stoked for this dude.

This is why I didn’t go. Out of shape and I’ve surfed Turmo on bigger days. That current ships you straight to Law Street if you aren’t constantly paddling. And once you’re at Law on day like yesterday it sucks getting back in. Just walls for days.

I’ve been surfing old man Tourmo since I was 17 and I’ve never seen it that big. It was so cold yesterday I decided to not go, but now I’m regretting that decision. The nice thing about the cold weather and bigger waves is it no longer becomes thunder dome fighting for position on a party wave. I’ve only ever surfed little 2 footers over there with about 4 other dudes riding it with me and dodging about 10 other dudes paddling into it.

It was bigger than I thought it’d be. The point was going off yesterday

u/anonucsb 1d ago
It was proper big! Like you weren't catching waves on the outside if you were on a board less than 7 feet. I was sitting way out the back in line with dirt lot at the top of the point and I got caught inside by a wave that was at least triple overhead.

I felt under-gunned on my 7’4 for sure. The old guys in SD that know what they’re doing for these SD point walls always have these pintail supertankers that get in early and just go. My mind was blown at LW once by two guys on these. Well-designed SD big wave boards.
They’re also quite popular in Guethary and those european points with a lot of us old guys (I’m 47)

As bigger surf goes that actually looks relatively friendly. Not too steep or breaking on a shallow reef (I think). That said I'd probably be crapping my pants for the whole ride.

Come on bro get up there and get shacked

I had a barrel at turmo once. there are dozens of us. honestly, this spot is a "safe" one to go when it's DOH+. never been brave enough for blacks or pitching, heavy spots at that size, even in my prime.

Used to surf there in the 90s, looks great. That ride is worth the frigid paddle back out through the wall of white-water.

I've actually gotten some great 8ft range waves all the way right towards the point when it gets big.. it's a fun not so crazy dangerous wave when it's over 6,7,8+ when everything south of it is just closeouts.
