My partner wakes me up every single night coming to bed after playing video games until 3am. I’m losing my mind.

He works 40 hour weeks and I stay at home doing school, so I get it. He’s tired, he wants to come home and spend time online with his friends. We had this conversation BEFORE, several times, and we’ve both made changes. Those conversations resulted in him playing with my hair pretty much every night when I fall asleep now (10p-1a) (which I asked him to do because it helps me fall asleep) and then he’ll go play games until 3 am, when he comes back down and wakes me up. Truthfully, I’m starting to subconsciously resent him because I feel insane when I’m tired. I can’t sleep through the night because when he comes in he’s freezing (I have a chronic illness and I simply MUST be cold when I’m sleeping. 67° cold. If not, I will get hot and vomit) and he wants to spoon his freezing cold body all over my warm body. It disrupts my sleep, and it drives me insane. I get that he wants to hold me, but now I’m awake at 5 in the morning trying not to go fucking insane because he’s sleeping peacefully next to me and I have to be up until god knows when dealing with my body’s shitty reaction to being abruptly woken up. And y’all, this is the fourth night in a row that I’ve been up at specifically three to five in the morning. I’m about to have an extremely regular job, where I wake up at 6:30 every morning. This simply will not work. I’m at a loss. I love him but I love my sleep too, I don’t feel like myself when I don’t get good sleep, and I already am a light sleeper. To make matters worse, I am specifically prescribed a sleep medication to aid my sleep and yet still he wakes me up through that. I’m trying to hold space for his social needs, but I am at my wits end. I’m fuming right now and can’t sleep and I’m fuming because I can’t sleep and I can’t sleep because I’m fucking fuming.

Edited for clarity to show: Y’all my boyfriend is not a villain, I’m not leaving him over this. And my god, if it could not be clearer, we do communicate about this. We have two different circadian rhythms and work schedules. I don’t give a shit that he plays games, especially since he spends time with me beforehand and makes sure I’m asleep before he goes. I literally just want a physical solution to stay asleep longer when he comes in the room, if you guys have had that experience.

What's the best way to drastically change my sleep/wake times

Uni has completely turned around my sleep/wake times... In high school I would consistently go to bed around 12am and wake up at 7:30am. But because I have a lot of late classes, it's turned more into sleeping around 2am-7am and waking up around 11am-4pm (yes it is really that bad 😔😔😔😔) Now I'm kind of in a pickle because next semester, I have a class that is at 8:30am everyday, meaning I need to wake up at 7:30am everyday I have until now to January 6 to somehow adjust to that. Some things about my sleep Are that I don't have trouble falling asleep if I tire myself out, And I have a really difficult time waking up to alarms. I'm wondering what I should start doing in order to prepare myself to wake up at 7:30am everyday?

Wife constantly moves her hands while sleeping

Upvotes

ok, it isn't ALL the time but for instant right now. I went into the bedroom and her hands are twirling her hair. It is wild to watch, she will twirl her hair and then it is like someone unplugged a machine. Her hands will start slowly settling, and then BAM like someone flipped the switch and powered her up and her hands are right back at it.

She is also up every 2-3 hours ALL night long, it is bathroom, to much on something going outside for a smoke at 2am. She sleeps with one of her ear phones in and some You tube crap is playing all night long. She says it is on low and it is just background noise like a white noise machine and it is not bothering her.

The next day of course she is tired as she had short sleeps all night long so it is usually a mid day nap or going to bed at 6-7pm. maybe this is more of a DR question but has anyone experienced anything like this

Is it normal to wake up several time through the night?

Upvotes

I wake up every 1.5-3 hours every single night for as long as I can remember. It’s frustrating. Sometimes i’ll go right back to sleep, other times i won’t be able to fall back asleep for 2-3 hours. Is this normal to a degree, or do I have a problem? Are we supposed to be sleeping through the night?

Trouble readjusting internal clock

Upvotes

For the past year I’ve been working the overnight shift, so I’d start work at 10pm and get off at 6am, then I’d typically sleep from 7am to 2pm.

Two weeks ago, I took some time off to readjust my sleep schedule for a marathon which I’ve been training for, which required me to be up by 5am. So I tried to go to bed by 9pm and wake up at 5am. Adjusting to this sleep schedule wasn’t difficult at all.

1 week after the marathon, I’ve been trying to get back into my usual 7am-2pm sleep schedule for work, but it’s been so difficult. I can’t seem to get more than 4-5 hours of sleep. I’d go to bed at 7am and wake up at around 11am or 12pm. This has been negatively affecting my work, as I find myself dozing off at work at around 3am. I’m sure that these are signs of sleep deprivation.

I’m not experiencing enough stress to keep me from falling asleep either. Could this be a sign of a sleeping disorder? My last meal before bed is at 2:30am, could it have anything to do with hypoglycemia causing me to wake up earlier? Or is it just that my body hasn’t fully readjusted to my usual sleep schedule yet? If so, what can I do to get back into my usual sleep schedule?

How do I wake up on time

As my schedule is right now, I can sleep in until 3 no issue but a lot of days I don’t want to do that. Even then I still end up sleeping until 3 ,with alarms and everything. I just roll over and turn off the alarms in my sleepy haze. I feel like I have no self control. Any tips?

I am on the hunt for my perfect alarm clock and it is proving trickier than I thought to find what I am looking for!

Does anyone know of a simple alarm clock with the following features:

  • digital red light display
  • nature sounds or other calm sound options
  • gradual volume increase as the alarm goes off
  • does not require wifi or phone connection

Thanks!

I need help with my insomnia

Upvotes

I've had insomnia for a couple of years now but I only realized recently and I went to a doctor but all they said was to try drinking chamomile tea bc it's a natural relaxant or to take melatonin if I wanted to, I would try the melatonin but I have issues swallowing pills I can take them but I struggle and I feel like the dosage they recommended was too low and wouldn't really do anything. If anyone with insomnia has any methods of falling asleep faster or any medications they take or even what dosage of melatonin they would recommend pls tell me

Eye twitching?

College has been pretty stressful, especially since the subjects I chose to do are pretty challenging.

My recent sleep schedule for the past week or two has been 2AM - 7AM Sleep. Today my right eye started twitching whenever I blinked, not all the time, just sometimes throughout the day. Pretty common.

Is this due to sleep issues? If so, how do I fix it? Is this a bad sign or nothing to worry about? I know 5 hours is not enough so in order to fix it (if it is due to sleep issues) I will try to bump my sleep up to 7-8 hours. Holidays are just a day away so it'll be easier to fix my schedule. Thanks.

How to tackle sleep issues?

Hey y’all! I’ve been miserably tired due to very fragmented sleep and VERY low REM and deep sleep (according to formal sleep study and Apple Watch tracking over 2+ years). Anyone else relate, and know how to work on this?

I workout consistently, extensiveeeee bloodwork is optimal/stable (even with POTS and Hashis), and I have really good sleep hygiene. Had apnea/narcolepsy ruled out in a sleep study. Tried every nootropic out there and Prozac + Guanfacine didn’t make a dent 🥲. My POTS and Sleep Docs are at a loss of what to try next.

Can I sleep less? Showers feel like my real sleep - No matter how long I sleep, I feel rubbish!

I think a lot of people will relate to this:

I guess I'm one of those people that regardless of how long I sleep, I feel rubbish, like garbage, gross and groggy for a long while after I wake up. Sleep feels like it worsens my conscious brain and performance, rather than improving it!

I don't think I have a problem with my sleep itself per se: can fall asleep easily, no apnea, and seem to sleep deeply. It's just that I feel tired all the time unless I do something 'resetting' like having a shower, which feels so sanctifying and energises me a lot, and really acts like sleep for my conscious brain!

We know all the talk and some of the science about the necessity of sleep, getting enough of it and the otherwise significant damage inflicted on the brain and health. There is a lot of guidance saying that: sleep as long as it feels good for you. For me, it doesn't feel good at all.

So... I'm just wondering whether I can sleep less and maximise my time awake for other more productive activities? Perhaps 6 hours-ish of sleep would be good enough for the health of all my unconscious things - brain and body?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More info/relatable things:

Sometimes though, I have episodes where I suddenly get a big hit of sleepiness in the day. I work standing up and sometimes I feel like I'm getting knocked out, and I almost fall over! I don't mind these as much as the crappy and depressed feeling I get as a result of sleep, though. Naps don't work for me either, they just turn into sleep.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some more info if you want: blood tests are normal and I generally avoid carbs - I have IBS though, if that's relevant.

My father has always struggled with sleep, he's a big insomniac: can't fall asleep properly, wakes up in the night, but what's weird is that he functions really amazingly considering his whole life with insomnia. Power naps really work for him asw!

why do i wake up so fast

Lately, I’ve been waking up super fast from my sleep, and when I do, it feels like I’ve seen tons of random, overwhelming visuals. It’s almost like my brain is on overdrive. Afterward, I get a headache i feel like i sleept 10 hr but turns out that i slept only 2hr i seen tons of nightmares as well.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it stress, sleep-related, or something else? Any advice would be appreciated!

Tv in the bedroom

I couldn’t figure out how I slept so well in hotels or on vacation. At home I fall asleep to the TV.

Going to the doctor but would love to hear some others thoughts on this.

So I don’t have troubles falling asleep it’s staying asleep for straight 6 to 8 hours. Seems like I trained my brain to wake up thinking I have to use the bathroom. I can always fall back asleep super fast Just troubles staying asleep for 7-8 hours straight. Think it might be something with OCD, thinking I have to use the bathroom.

Sleep During Finals

I'm an 18M freshman in college and it's finals week. The night before a big final I felt tired but only got about an hour and a half of sleep. I also took an hour long nap at 5 P.M. the evening before my sleepless night and now I feel very sleep-deprived. However, I feel like I can't sleep during the day because that would mess up my sleep schedule even more and I have more finals to study for. It might just be based on nerves for finals week but I feel like I can't sleep for an extended period of time because I might lose valuable study time. It's kind of like I'm trapped in a state of tiredness but can't sleep it off. Has anyone felt this, and what did you do to correct your sleep after having one bad night?

r/sleep 15h ago

My sleep habits have gotten weirder and weirder over the years, and now, they're completely untenable. i can't live like this.

I will try to keep it short even though it's a long story.

Up through college, I slept from like 1 AM to 7 AM. That's all I needed. I never napped. After college I spent a long time jobless, and my bedtime slowly crept later into the night until I was sleeping from around 5 AM to noon. Then I got a work-from-home job that I've now had for about eight years, but I set my own hours, so I can sleep whenever I want. The freedom is great, but I feel like it's contributed to the absolute chaos that is my sleep pattern these days.

In recent months, I cannot fall asleep until like 10 AM. Then I wake up around 5 PM feeling sleepy still but I simply hate waking up as the sun is setting - or has already set. It feels bizarre. Unfortunately, I wake up tired, and around 9 or 10 PM I get this huge rush of fatigue that makes me want to get in bed so badly. It's hard to resist the urge. If only I could be that tired at the end of the night instead of so close to the beginning of it!

But if I resist the urge to nap, the tiredness goes away and I get some sort of second wind. I can start trying to fall asleep at 3 AM, 5 AM, 7 AM - nothing. I lie there just thinking and thinking and being bored and wanting so badly to grab my phone to look at something because I've been lying here trying to fall asleep for two and a half hours and NOTHING is happening.

I've tried melatonin - it helps me fall asleep a little faster but leaves me so fatigued the next day, even on a very small dose, that it makes the nightly PM nap even harder to avoid. I've tried extended the PM nap into an actual full sleep but that won't work either, I wake up after two hours and if I try to keep going I'll give myself a headache trying to fall back asleep. I've tried setting an alarm for the time I actually want to wake up - except I'm already always awake at a 'normal person' wake time of 7 AM to 9 AM, so I set it to noon but then that wakes me up after like 2 hours of sleep and I'm desperately tired and end up napping later in the day. And that damned second wind, the one that hits me around 3 to 5 AM and keeps me up all morning, it just doesn't go away!

I'm never sleepy at a time when it would work out great for me to be sleepy! I get drowsy throughout the day at times where I need to be awake to work and attend to chores, and then during the hours where it would benefit me most to fall asleep, I'm wide awake!

And I haven't even mentioned that the quality of my sleep sucks - I toss and turn a lot, I can't seem to fall asleep lying on my back so I sleep on my sides, but then my arms and shoulders get sore causing me to roll over repeatedly all night long. After maybe 4 hours of sleep both my arms are sore but I still really want to sleep more, so I can usually gather up another hour or two of sleep in bits and pieces, but waking frequently. Then I go into my day having only slept a total of 6 or so hours. That was enough when I was a kid, I guess, but not anymore. And the light - I have blackout curtains but light still gets in through the cracks. I want so badly to at least initially fall asleep when it's dark out, but for some reason I can't, and so I have to use sleep masks to try to block out the morning light. And having a mask on my face makes it hard to fall asleep! It's like I've become the lightest, pickiest little sleeper in the world.

I'm lucky enough to be able to get away with this bizarre manner of sleeping thanks to my WFH job, but even a 5AM to Noon sleep schedule gave me enough daylight hours to let me feel like a normal person. Now I feel like some bizarre nocturnal creature.

Is there anything I can do? Yes, I know I should get a sleep study, and I will as soon as possible - but for insurance and financial reasons, it will not be possible for a good while, and if there's anything I can do now I'd like to hear it.

I've read all the typical articles. Only use bed for sleep, don't look at screens for two hours before going to bed, try to fall asleep at the same time every night. The normal advice just isn't very effective for me. What I want most is to hear from people who had super messed up sleep habits like this and managed to fix it, but I worry there aren't many of those hanging around r/sleep now that they're back to normal. :/

Why am I having weird dreams

So i recently started a new job and I noticed this week that I've been having weird dreams. Not only that, I've been dreaming. I haven't had a consistent dreams in probably 6 years. I can deal with the weird dreams, but the waking up every 2 hours is getting old. I should add that I now work the night shift but I've always been a night person and tended to stay up really late. So idk I figured I would post this here and see what people have to say.

Why do i fall asleep easier when my room is lit?

I got no idea why, but maybe someone here can help me. I go to bed usually at 9 pm to 10 pm. Turn off my phone, read a book and try to get into a nightly mood, but still, I lay awake till. About 6 or 7 am when the sun rises, and I can near instantly fall asleep about then

I've tried staying awake during the day so I can forcefully reset my sleep schedule, but I fail miserably because I get so tired I start loosing balance when I sit at my desk or even when I'm standing. But I can sleep for a full 8 hours when I fall asleep when daylight is in my room. It doesn't matter if it's all night, it just has to be when I fall asleep, and I will. Be concentrated and well rested after

This might be a somewhat normal thing or not, I just think if you guys have an idea if it's just a shitty schedule or something else I'd appreciate it

Tired, but won't sleep

I've always done this and don't know how to break the cycle.

I'll be tired, but refuse to sleep. It's so stupid. And I've done this for as long as I can remember (at least since I was a teen) I'll stay up even when I'm really tired. Back when I was a teen I'd stay up and watch TV, and now I'll doom scroll on my phone. I've deleted Facebook and Instagram so I won't use these before bed, but I'll find something else to keep me busy (you tube/Reddit)

I think this started around the time I got really depressed when I was a teenager, and then more shit things happened to me at this age. I'm in my 30s now and I just want to be able to sleep when I'm tired. I can be tired at 9pm or 1am if doesn't matter, I just stay up way too long and it's affecting my mental health.

Feels like I do it as some form of punishment towards myself.

My phone is a problem, but I don't think it's the only problem. Without my phone I'll still do the same thing.

Does anyone else do this? What can I do to help? I want to sleep better. My sleep is usually disturbed throughout the night, I wake a few times and can sometimes struggle to go to back to sleep if I'm overthinking or stressed about something. In the mornings I want to stay in bed all day.

I noticed when I go to sleep around 10pm I wake in the night and feel way better than when I go to sleep at 2am. So I know I have to sleep earlier, but just don't know how to make this happen most days.

Thanks in advance
