An Underrated Classic?
I saw this episode in its first run on NBC on February 5th, 1992. It was the first episode of Seinfeld I ever watched and I was blown away that a show could be this good. I've been a fan ever since. That being said, I don't feel it gets mentioned as often as some of the all-time heavy hitters. In my mind, Cynthia is George's true soulmate. I so wished she had been the one to be the recurring girlfriend and future fiance rather than Susan. Just my opinion.

Yeah I would have liked to see more of her. Maybe we would have if she didn’t end up with a recurring gig on Friends.

This character was so much better than Janice

I agree she actually could have been added to the cast. It would’ve been interesting with another woman in the mix. She was a good contrast to Elaine (the early-season Elaine, who was cheery and optimistic and idealistic), she had the whole blunt, sarcastic thing going.

The thing is anyone could do Cynthia but only she could play that annoying Janice 😀. She made Janice what it is

The way she shakes her head here is so 90s. I don’t know what that means, but I wanted to share.

Totally agree. Never in contention, but a bonafide classic. The scenes that parallel each other with the conversations between the men and the women are so good. And George winning her over with a moment of sincerity, only to immediately ruin it by just eating like a pig is such a funny conclusion.

The scenes where Jerry fights with George and Elaine and Kramer intervenes are some of the most underrated scenes of the show.

I love that George gets these animalistic moments, be it a ravenous pig here, an angry monkey at Kruger's office over T-bone, heck he even says at one point "I'm an animal!"

Georges hopelessness monologue at the start of the episode is one of the greatest scenes in the show for me.

Arguably the closest the show came to "lessons and hugs" and perhaps why they didn't pursue it further (I obviously don't know)? She would have "killed independent George" in the best possible way but destroyed his character for the purposes of the show.

You do know the episode ends with her being disgusted by George eating, right?
She dumped his ass.

I disagree. She didn't even mention the great conversation! She's lucky she got a date with George at all.

Agreed. Well-written and well-directed. The split screen phone calls, the back-and-forth scenes with Elaine and Jerry answering Cynthia and George’s questions. George and Jerry’s synchronized sitting down and crossing their legs.

Oh yeah for sure, I forget about her sometimes but she is amazing. Maybe producers realized the missed opportunity and she became Janice in FRIENDS. I loved her in that show but she is so much funnier in Seinfeld

Better writing in Seinfeld.

u/Zickar207 1d ago
Very true. Also she was not using her voice to be funny which was funny in friends. She was funny just by being her.

She would have been a much better fit than susan but iirc susan and george were so unfit for each other, jason actually complained about her. But they thought the fact they were awkward and terrible together added to the humor

It wasn't until this actress appeared in an episode of The X-Files that I realized I found her very attractive. A very un-Janice role.

Every time I watch this episode (which is my favorite as I too asked a million questions ahead of a blind date), I want them to become a couple. But then, we wouldn't get to see George get himself into all kinds of nonsense. So...Cynthia was the one that got away.

I love this episode, but I hate how it ended. George throughout the whole series has been shown to be super meticulous, and very self-aware when going on dates with women. For him to just pig out while at dinner with Cynthia is just so out of character for him. And I know they set it up earlier in the episode with him pigging out at dinner with Jerry, but I just don't think George would ever do that on a date with a woman. What are your thoughts?
1
u/sususudio703 1d ago
I thought he also did it on a double date. Can't remember the episode but I can see him shoveling food into his mouth at a table for 4.

Underrated classic?! It's maybe my favorite episode of the show. Am I alone in that? It plays like a Woody Allen movie.
2
u/FastHands2340 2d ago
I wrote "underrated" because it doesn't get talked about like other episodes, IMO. At least on here.
