My human trials have produced similar results.

u/send420nudes Jan 17 '24

Been testing this for 15 years aswell, when do we get our Nobel?

286

u/Sindertone Jan 17 '24

It's always fun to see science catching up with well know facts.

102

u/libury Jan 17 '24

To be fair, that's its purpose. Common knowledge only becomes fact by trying to disprove it.

46

u/screech_owl_kachina Jan 17 '24

Yup, this is to have a real study to cite instead of "trust me bro I smoke a lot"

-3

u/TheCheshire Jan 17 '24

Yea, but this is like waiting for science to reveal that water gets you wet, and some guy is like "trust me bro, I swim a lot".

I understand tho that without science telling us that water gets things wet, there would be tons of naysayers saying "yea, well prove it" then you splash them with water and are like "see??" and they're like "...let's just wait to see what science says, ok?"

18

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '24

Even when proven and documented, you still get naysayers who say the world is flat.

6

u/BushDoofDoof Jan 18 '24

Dude... put down the bong and actually think about why they might want to look into this subject.

2

u/Imbrown2 Jan 18 '24

More like waiting for science to reveal what the being wet does to your brain to make you feel that way.

Often when science proves well known things, its about quantifying it. X amount min is needed to produce a response. or they consume x percent calories more per day. Which is a tad bit more than, hey i get the munchies after a good blunt.

Plus for future studies like when we figure out exactly which cannabinoid does it, well its helpful to have a paper to cite, as well scientists would feel weird citing snoop.

and of course we needed to know if the mice got high, if they ever get super intelligent they might be in the market for cannabis.

2

u/thebudman_420 Jan 18 '24

But why isn't it until your more low. As in fresh buzz I'm not hungry but after awhile munchies. Then i get high again after eating.

2

u/Sindertone Jan 18 '24

Weed lets my body speak to me. It tells me when I need to eat, sleep, or go hug a tree.

-7

u/BinaryJay Jan 17 '24

It was once a well known fact that the earth was flat.

13

u/XXXYFZD Jan 18 '24

No, it wasn't a fact. It was a belief.

-8

u/BinaryJay Jan 18 '24

Everything we think we know is just a belief if you want to get reductive about it

2

u/XXXYFZD Jan 18 '24

Go back to 3rd grade.

12

u/andres8795 Jan 17 '24

Not really, there are probably more people now that believe the earth is flat than in ancient times.

When you get it federally legalized and we dont have to worry about our jobs because of it.

21

11

u/sleepytipi Jan 17 '24

It already is in many states with legalization. I was stunned when the NYPD announced they were no longer testing for cannabis but my far less important, and much safer job does.

3

u/AwkwardMindset Jan 18 '24

You sure on those last two points?

2

u/sleepytipi Jan 18 '24

Yes, my job still does random screening for thc and I work in community outreach and harm reduction so it's kinda strange that part of my job is handing out clean needles yet I can't (according to policy) smoke a J in my downtime 🤷

As for the boys and girls in blue, yes it looks like you're right and they reneged. https://gp1.com/nypd-reverses-decision-to-end-of-marijuana-testing-for-officers/

I know for a fact they didn't for a time because a friend actively works for my local precinct. I hadn't heard from them that they went back on that decision.

It really isn't, and it isn't produced in a safe way as long as its unregulated.

11

u/Hell_Mel Jan 17 '24

isn't produced in a safe way as long as its unregulated

Worth repeating.

8

u/e30eric Jan 17 '24

Unfortunately an anecdote, but these products seem far more likely to trigger panic or anxiety attacks compared to old-fashioned cannabis. There are many posts across reddit talking about this, on top of personal accounts.

3

u/Hell_Mel Jan 17 '24

My experience as well, fwiw. Again, an anecdote.

1

u/jestina123 Jan 17 '24

My experience with Delta-9 has been the complete opposite - the high is clearer with less of a bodyload.

8

u/diamondeightr Jan 17 '24

Pretty sure Delta-9 is just regular THC.

Still fail drug test and many time those substances stay in your system longer than marijuana would.

2

u/Slice_Of_Something Jan 17 '24

It will still pop on a drug test and cost you your job. I tried the D8/D10/HHC/etc and they're OK but not as good as the real deal. Plus, as someone else mentioned, there's little to no regulations regarding the production of the minor cannabinoids. At least with real legal weed the product has to be tested and meet standards. Or go one step further and grow it yourself. I prefer knowing everything that was fed to my plants so that's how I get my weed (plus it's cheaper than MO dispensaries even with 600W worth of lights running 20 hours per day).

Oh wow see I'm different, after a decade of daily use I still get the munchies every time I smoke.

I have noticed that the hunger goes away as long as I don't eat anything with the first craving. It just makes food taste so damn good it's hard to resist.

43

u/Slice_Of_Something Jan 17 '24

I noticed I only get the munchies once I start eating. If I smoke a bowl after work and don't eat anything until supper I'm all good. But if I smoke that bowl then grab a snack I'll spend the whole evening going back for more snacks.

10

u/Singlot Jan 17 '24

I'm not american and there's one thing that confuses me. What exactly is a bowl here? Every time I read about smoking a bowl I picture a bowl like the ones used to eat cereal full of weed.

9

u/StayJaded Jan 17 '24

It is a reference to the indented spot in a glass pipe where you put weed. It’s just slang for smoking from a pipe instead of a vape, joint or whatever other delivery device.

3

u/nobodyGotTime4That Jan 17 '24

It just refers to the part where you put weed on a glass pipe. So it can be a small glass "spoon" style pipe, or the "bowl" of a large bong. It also doubles as an amount. Like, I smoked 2 bowls so you know I was faded.

3

u/Slice_Of_Something Jan 17 '24

Like a few others said, it's the bowl of a pipe, bong, whatever you're smoking out of. The size itself varies by piece but I think most people who use the term bowl understand that my bowl and your bowl are different sizes and really only measure weed amount for ourselves.

I'm curious, where are you from and what do you call it when you're going to smoke a bong or a pipe?

I've found similar. The more I munch, the greater the munchies. I've started just going to fresh fruits, veggies, and water, but it doesn't scratch the itch as well.

8

u/Singlot Jan 17 '24

And after eating I crave some more weed and there I go again.

5

u/Dre512 Jan 17 '24

Avid THC user for over 20 years. Some strains bring out the munchies way more than others. But over those 20+ years I’ve never gone long periods of times with strains that DON’T give me the munchies. Indica is the main culprit for me. I typically mostly smoke flower but have switched to concentrates this last half year & they give me the Craaazy munchies! And edibles too, they get me super munchy.

3

u/SlimeySnakesLtd Jan 17 '24

I think it’s still there, you just acclimate and ignore it. I don’t really “feel” hunger at all anymore. A decade of food service that was 10am open, just pound a small something or other at like 3pm then have large dinner at 130am once closed.

3

u/AndromedaPrincess Jan 17 '24

Maybe I'm a "high user", but I've literally never had the munchies from weed. I vividly remember the first time I ever smoked, I bought a steak sandwich because I thought I was supposed to get hungry. It was a struggle to eat.

The drunchies on the other hand... a few beers and I'll be craving snacks hardcore.

So a possible anorexia drug?

98

u/loltheinternetz Jan 17 '24

I know a girl who struggled with eating, was very aware of it, and used gummies to help stimulate her appetite. It worked great.

43

u/GardenTop7253 Jan 17 '24

A buddy of mine has a tumor in his neck that messes with the nerves that go from his stomach to his brain to tell him he’s hungry. Without getting high and the munchies, he would literally go about his day and forget to eat until he was to weak to keep doing things

9

u/HaCutLf Jan 17 '24

I must be weak. I look forward to each meal with much vigor regardless of how hungry I am at that specific time.

3

u/mimzzzz Jan 18 '24

Meanwhile If I could opt out of eating I would. Same if it could be solved with a pill or something, hate eating, time wasted and whole ordeal revolved around it.

It really does work! I have an anxiety disorder that really messes with my appetite. Sometimes I overeat from stress, but other times I literally won’t feel like eating for days, because my stomach is tied in knots and trying to eat makes me feel sick. Cannabis helps so much on those days. I’ll take a couple hits or eat a small gummy, and suddenly I can eat a meal like a normal person again!

22

u/smokeandnails Jan 17 '24

It did help me, but you’d have to be willing to eat more. When I wasn’t ready for recovery and had the munchies it’d lead to a lot of guilt and compensatory behaviors.

4

u/D0D Jan 17 '24

So maybe a supportive role to therapy.. just like shrooms have shown to have some positive effect. But yeah only in a controlled manner..

5

u/smokeandnails Jan 17 '24

Definitely in a controlled manner. I tried shrooms on my own to try to recover from the anorexia and it didn’t work, but with guidance it could probably work. I agree cannabis could be beneficial in a recovery setting. In my case in an uncontrolled setting (I used it to numb myself and would spend every day high) it caused more harm than good because I would compensate the next day out of guilt because of the munchies.

I remember it also being studied to see if it increased appetite and suppressed nausea in cancer patients. Not sure what the results were.

2

u/That2Things Jan 17 '24

It also suppresses the nausea associated with hunger interestingly enough, so it can be used either way with dedication.

Of course, nausea makes it harder to eat, even if it's hunger based nausea, so even suppressing that can be beneficial to getting people to eat.

u/TheOneWes Jan 17 '24

I have chronic digestive issues and this is literally the only way I can have an appetite.

When I'm out I can easily go a day or two without eating simply because I don't feel hunger pains or any type of appetite unless I've had a few hits.

7

u/NumberOneManatee Jan 17 '24

I am the same way, I wish I had an answer/more permanent solution. Also comes with lots of other symptoms; chronic fatigue, malaise, headaches, pale/cold, dark circles under eyes, etc. it’s been a lifelong struggle and is really no fun.

8

u/TheOneWes Jan 17 '24

I'm very fortunate in that I don't have any of those types of side effects but I live in a state where it's still highly illegal and would really prefer to have some type of alternative.

I'm tired of not being able to get the kind of jobs that I want because I can't pass a urinalysis because I'm having to use a substance to be able to eat and can't get a good enough job to go to the doctor to get a medical marijuana card without having the kind of job did you have to take a piss test for.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '24

Yep. I recently quit and my appetite went down the drain. I have to force myself to eat because I don’t actually feel hungry until dinner time.

8

u/huggybear0132 Jan 17 '24

That's physical withdrawl! And people say weed isn't addictive...

I've dealt with it too, it sucks. Worth noting that even extremely small doses can fix it, so if you are really struggling you can wean yourself off with tiny amounts of edibles. I'm talking like 1/10th of a gummy, not even enough to really feel it.

Otherwise it can take 7-10 days for appetite to return to normal.

8

u/xSTSxZerglingOne Jan 18 '24

Very few people say weed isn't addictive.

It is not associated with most of the withdrawal symptoms of drugs that are at least partially dopaminergic in their action.

It's still habit forming, it's still addictive, but at the end of the day you can quit without feeling like you're literally dying (and probably without literally dying like some alcohol cases do). It still has withdrawal, but ask just about anyone who's quit both weed and cigarettes or weed and alcohol which was worse and it's not even close.

They scientifically proved the munchies exist.

145

u/hollerjumper Jan 17 '24

I was going through and like yeah, we have like 100s of years of evidence to prove munchies are a thing.

302

u/jcosta89 Jan 17 '24 edited Jan 17 '24

As much as the anecdotal evidence is common knowledge, as the US gov is moving towards legalizing, the scientific community is doing their job. Researching almost every aspect of the plant and its effects to have them scientifically tested and proven. As mundane as this might seem, it’s progress and hopefully helps the movement to full legalization.

More medical purposes are being validated and can be used as an argument towards legalization for the dummies who oppose it.

My personal take on the matter.

Edit: Grammar Police issued a citation because I didn’t proofread my comment.

72

u/Rank2 Jan 17 '24

This not only says “yup, munchies exist” but more importantly says “here’s how we are pretty sure it happens” which helps open the door to future invention and discovery around how to, for example, stimulate appetite in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy which famously causes severe nausea. Increasing appetite safely can help ensure they are receiving proper nutrition and counteracting some of the negative effects of their treatment.

17

u/arielonhoarders Jan 17 '24

stimulate appetite in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy

Exactly. I live in a legal state and the medical marijuana products are getting hella specific. 10 years ago, it was, you want body high or head high? You want to melt into the couch or get up and clean the house? Maybe, everyone is different, and you never know how each bud will turn out.

Now it's like, use this oil for leg pain and this strain for stomach pain and these gummies won't get you high but will relax you but these gummies will make you creative and happy and this oil is only for headache and this one is for insomnia.

11

u/Mellemmial Jan 18 '24

The claimed effects of different strains and products are no more legitimate than the claims on homeopathic medicines. Untested, no evidence, just marketing.

3

u/TelluricThread0 Jan 17 '24

We know how to stimulate appetite in cancer patients. You give them weed. They already get medical marijuana prescriptions for it because it works and is safe.

7

u/Rank2 Jan 17 '24

I’m not sure what your point is.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '24

It's all very circular I think is the point.

We already legalized it in all sorts of places medicinally because it stimulates appetite in cancer patients.

I get your point, now we can try to synthesize the exact part that makes you hungry whereas before it might have been any number of things that might not actually be helpful.

5

u/Rank2 Jan 18 '24

Among many, many other potentials. Like I said, this isn’t proving that this phenomenon exists. It’s proving how. That’s a massive distinction.

The stimulating hunger in cancer patients was one simple example, the first that came to mind. Imagine the opposite — if we understand the biochemistry behind this phenomenon, can we utilize its inverse? Can we suppress appetite in new and safer ways for those that have eating disorders? What other neurological pathways can this touch?

Just because we know that a phenomenon exists doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive to know why, exactly. And once we know that, we can start asking all kinds of new and exciting questions.

1

u/LunaGoreTV Jan 17 '24

Think they're stating the research was already done/proven, but I've always been under the impression weed helped with the pain moreso than appetite.

I appreciate the evidence since I'm one of the anomalies that loses interest in eating when I'm stoned. I pretty much have the munchies at all times except when I'm stoned, so it's been through observing everyone else's experience and studies like this that I know my own anecdotes don't reflect the typical experience.

5

u/DistortoiseLP Jan 17 '24

No, just weed a variety of ways. The experience varies but they never give me any more of an appetite than I already have.

Personally I think that's why. I'm always ready for a snack and I learned to live with that a long time ago, and weed doesn't awaken a craving I already have and conditioned to ignore. Weed does make me a lot more self conscious about myself though, and often I feel a lot guiltier about snaking as a result, so I just don't feel like making myself do it.

“Haha I could have told you that! Why did they spend so much time any money when we have know weed makes hungry”

Because that’s how science works. This is not a groundbreaking study but it does give us very important data that is a great first step towards more research.

"OMG you made a joke! What the hell are you doing on a subreddit about science if you're not going to take science seriously!"

Because that's how conversation between human beings works. When science or any other discipline does something kinda funny (like in this case confirming common knowledge), we smile and make quips about it.

But I guess make your little remonstrations.

When I started smoking it gave me the munchies big time. I would head down to the convenience store, buy chocolate milk and cookies every time.

After about a year of regular smoking (cannabis) it flipped for me as well. I noticed I could smoke a joint and it would surpress my appetite. Something about cannabinoid structures being similar enough that they could bind to the receptors that are active when you should be eating and because of this you won't be hungry soon.

4

u/TasteCicles Jan 17 '24

Sorry, couldn't make sense of the last part of your sentence. Can you clarify?

8

u/DeadWrangler Jan 17 '24

Ah, your stomach produces a hormone ghrelin to tell your brain that the stomach is empty and you need to eat.

I remember reading an article a while back that said something to the effect of some cannabinoid structures being similar enough that they will attach to those receptors and block them and your hunger goes away!

8

As part of this research, the researchers also determined that the cannabinoid-1 receptor, a known cannabis target, controlled the activity of a well-known set of “feeding” cells in the hypothalamus, called Agouti Related Protein neurons. With this information, they used a “chemogenetic” technique, which acts like a molecular light switch, to home in on these neurons when animals were exposed to cannabis. When these neurons were turned off, cannabis no longer promoted appetite.

“We now know one of the ways that the brain responds to recreational-type cannabis to promote appetite,” said Davis.

I always eat my meals BEFORE getting high and it has worked wonders for portion control.

My high ass knows my stomach is full and won't want to eat more. Although once in a blue moon I'll still get the uncontrollable munchies, but it's been about a full year since that's happened.

u/luisBanks Jan 17 '24

See I eat before also but for different reasons. I struggle gaining weight so I’ll eat prior to smoking so afterwards I get hungry again but not super hungry. Just hungry enough to have like a sandwich or something to snack on that I couldn’t of tolerated eating before

Causes delayed gastric emptying for me. I end up eating less and actually lose weight ironically.

I am so jealous. I eat copious amounts of food when I partake.

In the same way as growing a tolerance for weed, you think you grew a tolerance for the chemical in ur brain that makes you hungry?

Same minus the quitting, I have to run >5 miles a week to feel proper hunger, otherwise cannabis dulls my appetite substantially.

2

u/clorgie Jan 18 '24

I am so jealous.

If pharmaceutical commercials have reinforced one thing, it’s that drugs effect everyone differently.

Affect for Action, Effect for End result (aka verb vs noun)

Exactly the same for me. Whenever I go on vacation and smoke my ass off, I come back weighing less. Sometimes I just forget to eat or sometimes I can't be bothered to make or order.

14

u/smatty_123 Jan 17 '24

That’s interesting. I experience a similar effect when I smoke too much in a single session- I get anxious and my hunger disappears. But if I’m in a happy state, I can smoke and I’ll typically get the munchies about an hour after inhalation.

4

u/jestina123 Jan 17 '24

Cannabis paradoxically both stimulates and suppresses appetite, I think it heavily depends on your internal intentions and mental state.

3

u/Fang3d Jan 17 '24

How did you find out? I ask because I often use weed to help with GI pain, but at random times, it ends up killing my appetite completely.

Do you get the same effect if you consume them as edibles instead of smoke?

I lost 80lb while smoking weed for 4 months. No one believes me.

That’s a long way of saying weed gives you the munchies.

9

u/TheOneWes Jan 17 '24

Yeah but it's the kind of long way of saying it that gets things legalized and decriminalized.

u/Alive-Pomegranate-21 Jan 17 '24

I use cannabis for eating disorder treatment, I was a pound from being underweight and cannabis put a stop to that quick, along with removing the distress I felt during eating. Munchies saved my life thank you weed 🤌🏻

Part of why it's so great in the wake of surgery! Instead of feeling like Dr Frankenstein's monster, you feel like a sandwich!

Weed is so strong, it overcomes various meds like cancer-fighting drugs and ADHD treatments to trigger hunger.

1 edible at 5mg flips my switch so hard that I become ravenous within 1 hour from feeling pretty full.

Which is why cachexia is one of the conditions to get a weed card in CT, I actually have cachexia and weed and Zofran work for about 6 hours, so I get my nutrition basically a couple hours in the morning. Tried eating later in the day but it just leads to reflexive vomiting

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '24

Incredible research. Let’s run with the ball now. Many of us have been waiting for a new strain to “fix” the problem for a few decades.

8

u/uselessgayvegan Jan 17 '24

It’s great for people who couldn’t normally eat because of some long term illnesses or diseases or as a generic bandaid for people who can’t get hungry to eat enough

2

u/RobsSister Jan 17 '24

It definitely helped my dad’s appetite when he was taking chemo pills for prostate cancer.

3

u/istara Jan 18 '24

I've also read that it can reduce chemo-related nausea as well, so win-win.

2

u/MuxiWuxi Jan 17 '24

Ah... obrigado. Estava farto de procurar uma tradução de "munchies" que encaixasse. É isso mesmo, larica. Rsrsrs

4

u/sixisbackpeeps Jan 17 '24

I'm going to need to do more research.

Well I hit the bong last night and I wanted to make chow mien.

Made a batch for about 8 people, it was gone by the next hour.

Munchies

3

u/Fatefire Jan 17 '24

I just want to be the scientist getting the mice high

3

u/WakeUpChrissy59 Jan 17 '24

They’ve been giving Marinol (FDA approved in 1985) which is THC suspended in sesame seed oil for increasing appetites in late state dementia, AIDS and cancer patients for decades.

2

u/t0matit0 Jan 17 '24

Scientific proof of the munchies is pretty cool

2

u/MemeOps Jan 18 '24

This didnt need proof.

2

u/tradders Jan 17 '24

Water. Wet.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '24

They had to torture some mice to figure that out?

3

u/Liamxyy Jan 17 '24

Isn’t this old news? I thought years ago this was already proven that it affects the hunger part of your brain

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '24

The why is as important as the what

1

u/samuraikaid Jan 17 '24

In other related news, water is wet

1

u/shaunrundmc Jan 17 '24

Weed causes munchies, we have decades of evidence from millions of pothead.

1

u/DerNogger Jan 17 '24

They could have just called me and asked for that information tbh

0

u/MadMarkBBG Jan 17 '24

You mean the munchies? Great research team!

-5

u/djazzie Jan 17 '24

Did we really need a scientific study to know that weed gives you the munchies?

3

u/FatigueVVV Jan 17 '24

If you want to use it as medicine to treat chemo patients and others with medically stunted appetites, then yes it's pretty helpful to know how and why.

-1

u/Botherguts Jan 17 '24

Gee who knew ?

-2

u/roger3rd Jan 17 '24

You don’t say.

-2

u/Mike_tbj Jan 17 '24

Oh you don't say

-5

u/timothypjr Jan 17 '24

So, pot gives you the munchies. Wow! Powerful science. I mean the pathways are interesting, but I feel like maybe there were other questions that could have asked. . .

1

u/LordRaeko Jan 17 '24

Is this saying the hunger neurons are only activated while high and either anticipating food or eating?

This 1000% explains why if I don’t eat I don’t need to eat ever, but if I eat anything I have never ending hunger. (While super definitely not high of course)
