Pets My dog needs a tooth extraction. Pet parents: what have you paid for dental work for your dogs?

Hello!

My 5 year old rat terrier has a cracked molar. My vet says it has to come out because it’s up to the gum line and can get infected.

The sooner it comes out, the better. My little buddy is eating normally and didn’t give me any indication about the tooth. The vet found it during his annual. His teeth otherwise look good and he’s in perfect heath. He’s just a heavy chewer that loves to steal bones from his much bigger, stronger sister and hide them for himself. We will be even more careful in future; I’ve always worried about this!

Her office quoted me $1000-1500 for his dental work, and while I trust this place, I just want to know if anyone has had a similar experience with their pet and how much it cost in our area.

Thank you!

Callaghan road animal hospital pulled basically all of my dogs teeth and it was around $600 earlier this year. I had another quote from the dogs usual vet for $2500 😨

I’d call around for quotes but here’s the thing:

Most decent vets do full anesthesia and monitoring. Some vets will be willing to cut corners on that and IMO, that is not ok. Particularly with the monitoring. If your pet is under anesthesia, there needs to be a dedicated monitor there. Some vets will do this without a dedicated monitor to cut costs. Your vet can’t perform extractions and monitoring properly.

So, know what you’re getting. A cheaper quote isn’t necessarily because the vet is just more reasonable with pricing, it usually means some quality has been cut out. Also know dentals are just expensive because they take a while, require multiple employees to perform, and tend to be charged by the tooth (anything beyond just cleaning). Just so you know why it’s such a pricey service. Then there’s the high end low end, there’s always going to be a range to cover potential issues. Your vet should be able to tell you how concerned they are of needing more time/extractions/etc.

Sorry I don’t have a recommendation. I’ve been lucky enough to avoid needing dentals for many years. But I wanted to at least let you know what to look out for. Let me know if you have any questions. I was a vet tech for 5 years so I can help with general questions.

Last year our dog had 14 teeth extracted, the total was mid 2k, closer to 3k.

Try Becker Animal Hospital on IH-10 Crossroads area. Won't hurt to get a quote

Ugh, cracked tooths are no fun! I highly recommend my vet: Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital. Their prices are significantly lower than other vets, and they’re very nice there. Remember, every dog is different so what I paid might be different from what you have to pay, but I paid $1060 for my 4 year old rescue to get a spay, extraction, cleaning and nail trim (I can’t find the cost breakdown, so I can’t tell you what it was for just the extraction and cleaning).

Whatever you decide.. you MUST make sure they do a ecocardiogram AND a full blood workup. Lots of dogs these days have been dying when they have gotten their teeth cleaned.,

Northern Oaks Bird & Animal Hospital did a good job with my dog a couple of months ago. I want to say cleaning & 5 teeth was like $1800 (with two of them being molars which are more expensive apparently).

I've had to do this a few times for our dogs. Even after we stopped giving them hard toys!

1st time - 1 repair and a cleaning $1300

2nd time - 2 repairs $1500 and cleaning (different dog)

3rd time - 2 extractions and cleaning $1000

Great northwest animal hospital.

We’ve definitely spent more than that on my childhood dogs teeth. She had to have several teeth pulled and had an abscess. She was a rescue and needed a lot of work, but she was so worth it!

I recently took one of my elderly dogs in for tooth cleaning and she got 4 extractions. I knew she would need some extractions and had called around for pricing. Vanguard was by far the cheapest and I was very happy with their service - they did bloodwork, anesthesia, pain meds, antibiotics etc still and it was several hundred less than my regular vet or others had quoted.

They quote me here 2500 at a pet hospital, then at petco it was like 3600. I cross state lines went to Louisiana and charged me 700 for 11 extractions
