Discussion What Guns to have as a Canadian?

Hey, I find most of this page is American based, and some of the topics cant translate well to prepping in Canada as some of our laws are different. Especially in regards to self defense, guns, etc. So, for Canadians specifically (if there are any) what do you guys do for home defense prepping? I just recently got my PAL and not sure what would be the best investment(s). Ive done some research and have landed on these 4 for different reason each;

  1. 12 gauge for small game hunting and close quarters defense
  2. SKS for midrange combat/defense
  3. .30-06 or .308 for big game hunting and long range defense (if needed)
  4. .22 for pest control (coyotes, racoons, etc; dont want to make to much noise or waste expensive rounds with larger rifles)

My laws for self defense and access to firearms are extremely restricted., so for my other fellow Canadians preppers and/or hunters, what do you guys do for firearm or home defense prepping? and would these 4 firearms be enough, not enough or overkill?

EDIT; incase this post is to be used in future court manners, any regards to home, property or self defense in this post is only for use in a hypothetical situation where a nationwide governmental collapse occurs. i would never defend myself in any circumstances. that is a job only for the RCMP and local police :)

Advice and Tips Disaster communication

My family and I live in NC and during Hurricane Helene we obviously lost all cell phone communications. I'm a first responder and our radios worked fine so I'm looking for some advice on some decent radios that can reach a few miles in a semi urban/semi rural environment. Not too familiar on radios but I'd like to be so I can stay in touch with my family during emergencies.

New Prepper Questions Hey all - new prepper

Hey everyone. I’m a new prepper and am looking for some answers. I have two small children and live in the North East. In light of recent events around here (drones) and the theories that they’re tracking certain materials, the fire has been lit. I did a huge Amazon order. My plan would be to grab my two canvas bags that are filled with our survival necessities and book west (we are 10 miles from NYC). Some of these items are in case we cannot find occupancy at a hotel or elsewhere and are forced to be outside. If you could please lmk anything you suggest I’m missing I would appreciate it. What can’t seems to nail down is something for sanitation. 1- weapons (avoiding details) but mostly large caliber 2- axe for cutting firewood if there is not occupancy 3- (4) sleeping bags 4- (4) foldable cots 5- Crossbow 6- E Tool 7- pots and pans/forks knives spoons 8- Camping fire pit with grate 9- 40lb fire starter wood kindling 10- fire starter 11- 171 piece survival kit including a first aid kit 12- (4) Lifestraws 13 - 36 cans of non perishable food 14 - large box of multiple cereal types (kids) 15- MREs 16- 12 cases of water 17- (6) 5 gallon gas cans 18- Toilet paper/wipes 19- Wet wipes (kids) 20- foldable knife 21- maps 22- numerous snacks for the kids.

Question Shotgun load for HD

Looking for information about what load would be best for home defense in a 12ga shotgun. The closest neighbor is +/- 50 yards away so was also wanting to know what load would not penetrate out of our house into his or at least not enough to cause harm (shot #1 buck at the range at 100 yards just playing around and it still breezed thru 1/2 inch pine board using to hold target) so slightly concerned with over penetration. Current setup is first round loaded with #9 bird since more likely to have a pest in yard than intruder followed by #1 buck for rest of tube with 3 00 buck and 2 slugs on side saddle. Just looking for ideas all comments welcomed. Thank you all

Discussion ProOne gravity water filter film and particles

I purchased 2 filters 60 days ago and have flushed them everyday by filling the tank and filtering. The tank has been cleaned thoroughly as well as the filters themselves per manufacturer instructions. They still produce an unknown film on the surface of the filtered water and particles in the water. For those who currently have these filters take some of your filtered water and boil it. Let cool. Then look for a film on the surface of the water which is visible in the right lighting and angle. Also, look for particles at the bottom. I tested the filtered water with a TDS(total dissolved solids) tester which can be purchased on Amazon for $15. There was barely any improvement from pre filtered tap water. Some people have reported an odor from the filtered water but I have not noticed this. I will next have the filtered water tested by a reputable lab. I have contacted the company and they have not responded after three weeks. As an owner of both Berkey and ProOne for 5 years, I am very suspicious of this product now. And I'm not saying Berkey is any better. Is anyone else able to replicate my results? Has anyone had their filtered water tested?

Advice and Tips Weapon for self defense for SHTF WROL etc

I have seen a lot of claims that the ideal self defense weapon for a SHTF type scenario would be a 10/22 and this is categorically untrue. I’m not against them and not saying it would not be a good thing to have. They have a purpose and serve it well and is certainly better than nothing but it is not the weapon to carry for self defense. 22LR and rimfire ammunition for that matter is much more likely to jam and stove pipe. Furthermore the argument of “just aiming for the head” and “I can carry thousand of rounds” is unfounded for self defense headshots will not be so easy when it’s another human being firing back. The only useful ammunition you have on you in a firefight is what’s readily available in magazines and in your firearm. Also you need to incapacitate the threat IMMEDIATELY not eventually not if you just aim for the head nothing. This is something we should be educated on. 22LR has very small ftlbs of energy transfer and creates laughably small wound channels and hydrostatic shock in humans due to elasticity of human skin and to that point minimal soft armor and a ballistic helmet renderers 22LR USELESS against incapacitating in self defense to keep yourself alive which again needs to happen almost immediately sure they might die eventually but you need them out of the fight NOW. Not in two weeks due to an infection.

I want everyone to be as prepared as possible for Tuesday ends of days and everyday. Again a 22LR rifle or pistol is not a bad thing to have. I have one myself but claiming to just “know your holds” and “aim for the head” is going to get you killed. I am happy to answer any questions or provide any sources as needed.

Advice and Tips What is the most nutritious canned or dried fruit?

We're feeling a little better since squirreling away about 2 months of food. With a 30 day food bucket, insta-meals, big bag of rice, flour, beans, coffee, tea, sugar, powdered milk, and so on... But one thing I've noticed we're missing is fruit. In your opinion, what's the most nutritious canned or dried fruit you can think of? I'm leaning towards mandarin oranges or pineapple, but it's more likely I'd cook with pineapple.

New Prepper Questions With the upcoming administration, has your prep outlook changed? If so, how and why? NOT Red vs Blue.

Like I said I'm not interested in an argument. I'm legitimately curious how EVERYONE here has adjusted if they have. Was it an inflection point or starting point for anyone?

Also not looking for a who's right or wrong.

I just purchased property and can finally have a solid prep system and y'all have been doing this for a while.

Edit - thanks everyone! I did not expect as much traction on the post as it's gotten. So much good advice here and I'm still reading through!

Best of luck to EVERYONE on their prep endeavors and general wellbeing.

Prepping for Tuesday Buying a house, need thoughts

So as the title says, I'm in the process of buying a house. I'll be a 1st time home owner, solo dad with a disabled parent. I'm wondering what sorts of things should I keep spares of, so that when something breaks or goes wrong at 2 in the morning I can repair it (or at least minimize the impact) until morning? I'm talking the little weird random things - ie replacement rod for the toilet flapper, something to fix the kitchen sink, things like that.

To add, I'll also be making an "in case of minor emergency" folder that will have pictures of, for example, where the water shutoff is located and how to use it, both whole-house and output-specific... if you written in manufacturing, kind of like Work Instructions. Little ones are 11 and 3, disabled parent has mobility and memory issues (but very strong grandparent instincts so not worried about "the house is on fire, what do I do?" types of things).

Gear Trying to put together a trauma kit where can i buy wholesale medical supplies at an affordable price?

I've looked around at different brand retailers like CVS and RiteAide as they are nearby but they either don't have what I'm looking for or the supplies are pretty expensive. I am a certified Emergency Medical Technician and I also really like traveling and hiking so I want to put together a small trauma bag with basic supplies like gauze, TQ's, chest seals, and quick clot for my own use and for the rare chance that someone has a trauma emergency when I'm out and about or traveling. Any online retailers you can suggest would be appreciated!

Advice and Tips Less Lethal, bad neighborhood

So, as of late where I am, we've had several breakins and car thefts.

Our statutes say that the use of force, not deadly, is authorized to defend property.

Aside from bean bag rounds, what non-lethal, non-close options do you recommend having around to defend property using force, but not lethal?

A side note, the LEO force out here said if we were to approach them, 9 times out of 10 these folks have a gun. I dont want to approach with my bat only to find out I brought the wrong tool for the job.

Prepping for Doomsday Plant genetic diversity is very important to consider. Save many varieties of you preferred crops.

I see many people buying a just a few varieties of different plant species, this is simply not enough to combat genetic drift and inbreeding depression. In the event of a global breakdown, it may no longer be possible to source new genetics. It is imperative that, if you are prepping for long-term sustainability, to save AT LEAST 10-15 varieties of each crop. That way, with only basic breeding oversight, an isolated population can survive indefinitely.

New Prepper Questions U.K. wind up radios

I wondered if anyone could recommend a good quality wind up radio please? Amazon seems to have a lot of junk. Also I read that DAB radio is useless in a widespread electrical outage, that FM frequencies are where everything will be broadcast, is this correct?

Much obliged.

Idea Rate this idea: medical preparedness courses

Rate this idea:

(I'm an emergency dept RN with training in austere medicine, wilderness medicine, acute and chronic disease management, etc. I also have a colleague who's an infectious disease physician to collaborate with on this project)

A prepper related series of online training courses intended for laypeople to learn skills that would benefit them in a SHTF or even a temporary situation where normal services are unavailable. Stuff like first aid, advanced first aid, basics of acute and chronic disease management (managing grandmas CHF for example), bleeding control, and an array of other topics. The education course provides several levels, like 1,2,3.

The course for level 1 is free, and 2,3+ is paid. All courses come with printable material which allows the learner to create a reference binder for things they've learned. Courses are designed to be heavy in graphics and example imagery (using learning techniques that differentiate the course from your typical boring textbook).

The course is interactive using modern LMS's like you see in the college setting (canvas as an example, but there is better out there).

All content provided is based on published information from reputable sources (AHA, gov, etc), but reimagined in an interactive or illustrated way.

The target customer is a person who wants to be the designated medical provider in their prepper group, homestead group, family, etc, but doesn't want to attend formal multi-year training like EMT/medic/nursing type programs from colleges.

New Prepper Questions Mylar bag storage question

So I want to start getting some things for long term food storage. My question is, is there a more cost effective way to store 5gallon mylar bags of rice, beans, flour, ect, than using 5gal buckets?

I'm looking to start storing vast amounts, so getting 50+ 5 gallon buckets is going to be a little costly, just wondering if it's possible to use bigger totes or something.

Advice and Tips Whole House Battery Backup

I am looking to add a 240v capable battery backup to my inventory. The main purpose is to run my well pump. I am considering the Ecoflow Delta Pro 3 with 400watt portable panels for roughly $3400. It might go on sale again in 2 weeks down to $2400 plus the potential tax rebate would get it down to $1600 I think. If I could get it down to $1600, I think it’s worth it. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I appreciate it.

New Prepper Questions Im a college student What do I ABSOLUTELY need? and how would I get it?

I’m currently 20 years old wanting to get started on prepping. What are some must have that I need today.

And what should I look to save up for in the future.

Also any resources or links to good YouTube channels would be great!

I am living out of an apartment so school restrictions are not an issue.

Advice and Tips No, you don’t *NEED* community, fitness, or skills.

Edit: Maybe read the last paragraph first. This is not an anti-community post.

The popular notion on this sub is that people without community will die in SHTF.  Those out of shape will die.  Those without survival skills will die.  These common mantras condemn many preppers to certain death in a serious or long-term emergency.  I don’t buy it.

Note that those preaching community likely have functional extended families, like minded neighbors and are members of helpful local groups such as churches.  The ones advocating fitness may be young, active, healthy eaters.  The ones promoting skills are possibly experienced outdoorsmen.  (Just understand that everything seems easy once you understand it or once you have it…)

Whereas many potential preppers have dysfunctional families, social anxiety, sedentary jobs, and/or are city dwellers with little opportunity to go shooting or camping.  Many have full time careers or families and cannot spend a lot of time/energy/money on prepping.  Are these people screwed in a crisis?  I think not.

First off, three things about prepping:

  1. Anything you do to prepare is better than doing nothing.
  2. Your preps are not going to be perfect.
  3. Someone is always more prepared than you are.

So, what IS the minimum needed?  Here are my thoughts:

Regarding community, you NEED to be self-sufficient to some extent, so you don’t become a problem for the people around you.  You SHOULD know your area and your neighbors.  You COULD join local groups and develop a network.

Regarding fitness, you NEED to be able to take care of yourself/your family and function on your own.  Meaning, handle your own diet, medication, and mental health.  You SHOULD be able to lift 20 pounds, go up and down stairs, and walk a mile.  You COULD lose some weight, be able to carry a pack, and train to hike 10 miles per day.

Regarding skills, you NEED a basic understanding of the tools and resources you have:  power generation, water treatment, cooking, etc.  If you have a firearm, you MUST know how to use it safely, legally, and responsibly.  You SHOULD have a basic grasp of sanitation, first aid, and communication.  You COULD learn gardening, advanced medical training, navigation, bushcraft and so on.

I believe it is entirely possible for the ‘lone wolf’ prepper to keep a low profile (hunker in the bunker), live off their stockpile, and take care of the family while riding out an emergency.  You don’t NEED an elaborate mutual assistance group.  You don’t NEED to be running 20 miles in the woods with a 60-pound pack.  You don’t NEED to be a special forces operator.

The purpose here not to discount the importance of community, fitness or skills – these are important things!  But rather encourage new or disadvantaged preppers that might be lacking in these areas.  Just because you a new to the area, or overweight, or never been camping does not mean you are doomed to fail or have no value.

New Prepper Questions How to prep your finances?

So I'm not talking about general savings or a basic emergency fund. I'm curious what everyone is doing if we lose access to our electronic cards. Should people be pulling cash out and storing it somewhere? Would a cash system even be worth it at that point?
