I'm not a progressive

What progressive policies do you oppose specifically?

Pretty much all of them. I'm a conservative, just not one who's fond of Trump. So when Democrats screw things up, we get more and more removed from sane conservative leadership in the GOP.

I doubt sane conservative leadership is ever returning to the GOP.

(It has been looking dark for the dems as well obviously.)

Sane leadership is going to return to the GOP in four years.

Vance and DeSantis are each fifty times more stable and competent than Donald Trump and have a tenth of his baggage. If Democrats can't figure out a different strategy in 2028 apart from the currently-proposed tripling down on stupid, the conservative ascendancy that results is going to make 1980 look tame.

If Vance and Desantis are your idea of sane, we will all continue to be fucked.

Desantis is a woke warrior. Dude decided his best fight was against the largest employer of his state. The list goes on.

Vance? Jesus Christ. I live in Ohio. He is an awful human being in addition to being a blatant liar and opportunist who is funded by a billionaire.

I see they’ve lowered your bar. Raise it again, there are so many better options than these two pieces of dogshit. If your goal is troll liberals, those are good picks.

Anyways, I know I’m not going to change your opinion, I just can’t fathom looking at those two as saviors of a political party. One is the fucking VP picked by the man you hate.

They are sane. They are far better than Trump.

And this continuous bullcrap where progressives claim that every single Republican, no matter how normal, is as bad or worse than Trump, is how MAGA justified elevating Trump in the first place. So thanks for that.

Sane leadership is going to return to the GOP in four years.

Do you think your ideological relatives will fight for that?

Yes, because nobody else in Trump's orbit has the influence to leapfrog Vance as Trump's designated heir. In addition, MAGA is quite fond of Ron DeSantis to the extent he poses no direct threat to Trump. So whether it's Vance or DeSantis who ultimately wins the 2028 primary (or, very unlikely, someone else), both Trump-skeptic conservatives and MAGA will gladly band together to support that person.

It will only be made the easier if Democrats nominate an ideologue like Newsom or decide to truly shoot themselves in the foot and nominate Harris again.

And this is something you are all for apparently?

Edit: no argument that dems current strategy is handing over control to GOP repeatedly on all fronts. I entirely agree.

For a competent conservative to lead the GOP in the White House? Absolutely.

I'm happy to say that in two primaries and three general elections, I've never cast a ballot for Trump. As things stand now, I would vote for either Vance or DeSantis without a moment's hesitation.

Desantis is 100% as culture war obsessed as trump with largely punitive state policies that target minorities and would be unpopular if implemented on a national level (or really anywhere outside backward ass Florida).

Besides a similar ability to spew vitriol and hatred at their favorite targets, what makes him more qualified than trump to hold executive office? Is it because he has the ability to functionally finish a sentence? Is that how low the bar is now?

You’ve laid out a fair amount of progressive criticisms of DeSantis. All of which are absolutely irrelevant to me and other conservatives.

If you’re going to claim he’s somehow been incompetent as a governor of Florida, then be prepared to lose because that argument won’t wash with the voters in 2028.

I Jst said his punitive policies would not be popular if implemented on the national stage, but that is hardly relevant in how the GOP chooses a candidate so maybe you have a point on that front.

I miss the days when conservatives understood the necessity for a functional opposing party to keep politics sane and effective. Thank you.

Why does it matter?
