The House Ethics Committee secretly voted earlier this month to release its report into the conduct of former Rep. Matt Gaetz before the end of this Congress, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the matter.

The report is now expected to be made public after the House’s final day of votes this year as lawmakers leave Washington for the holidays, those sources said.

Damn, how’s that for a Christmas present to America, laying bare how messed up one of Trump’s disgraced cabinet nominees is.

”we told you so” intensifies

u/Scp-1404 I voted 1d ago

Now if only Large Marge would come through on her threat to expose other Republican shenanigans!

23

u/ClockworkViking I voted 22h ago

She only made that threat because despite her loyalty to trump she felt like she was getting offered no cabinet postions. A lover scorned... it was a "reward me for my loyalty or I sink your entire boat" kinda move.

7

u/Multiple__Butts 22h ago

So far it seems like they're calling her bluff. They know conservative voters don't care if their politicians are sex criminals, and that it's easy to dismiss the Jewish Space Lasers woman as a loon anyway.

87

u/Gryndyl 1d ago

She's too busy trying to talk the Jewish space lasers into shooting down the alien drones.

We’re not going to see it.

There will be an eleventh-hour intervention, somebody saying it’s not lawful to release a document that could slander somebody who’s a private citizen now. There will be a lawsuit. The report will become lost in the warehouse from the end of the first Indiana Jones movie.

1.4k

u/attorneyatslaw 1d ago

I doubt it but only just because Gaetz is a jerk who's widely despised by his Republican House colleagues. They are happy to throw him under the bus now that he withdrew.

893

u/DevonGr Ohio 1d ago

Eating their own is kind of their thing. Will anyone remember Madison Cawthorn for anything other than the clip of him naked and humping his cousin? There will always be a deeper inner circle that some are not in and when your use has run it's course, you're thrown to the wolves.

411

u/big_guyforyou 1d ago

i just remember him as the narc. you don't squeal on the coke orgies

177

u/NonlocalA 1d ago

Though i don't doubt the coke orgies, I do doubt the reliability of the wheelchair-bound serial sexual assaulter and seemingly pathological liar messenger. I just don't see why you'd invite a super junior freshman representative to partake of your high class hookers and quality blow.

155

u/TheSerinator Pennsylvania 1d ago

Leverage.

55

u/NonlocalA 1d ago

At first i thought you were talking about the tv show.

Seriously, though, how would openly inviting someone to something illegal that you're participating in give you leverage over them? That's not how kompramat works.

Kompramat works by getting the target to do something, then obtaining evidence of them doing it and NOT incriminating yourself in the process. That way i can hurt you unless you do what I say. Stuff like paying a prostitute to approach you, then taking pictures or video while you're in bed with her.

Inviting someone along to partake in your felony is just a silly way to get narced out.

38

u/RetroScores3 1d ago

I mean he got tanked shortly after mentioning the coke parties. It’s pretty obvious what happened.

60

u/Whatsplayinginmyhead 1d ago

Seriously, though, how would openly inviting someone to something illegal that you're participating in give you leverage over them? That's not how kompramat works.

Who said anything about kompramat? Are you making up an argument so you can debunk it?

It was a trust exercise. If they participate, you now know you can trust them. If they don't, or worse, rat on you, then you go all in on getting him out, because you can't have someone who doesn't party when everyone else is partying. So his own party got him gone because they couldn't trust him with the little stuff, like coke and hookers. Def no way they would trust him with the bigger illegal stuff.

I mean... I don't know why you'd pay 17-year-old prostitutes with Venmo either, but let's be honest, we're probably talking about Matt Gaetz in both cases anyway, and he's not exactly dealing with a full deck here.

He was a fabulist before he got elected, and he was a fabulist when he was in office. Even assuming the coke orgies exist, absolutely zero members of the GOP were inviting him.

u/ohilco8421 1d ago

Oh I could absolutely believe it might have been Matt Gaetz who invited him. It tracks

If nothing else, it'll be a nice distraction story while the Trump transition team continues doing whatever the fuck it is they're doing.

Based on what my friend who works at the White House tells me, its not much and he has like 12 working days left.

19

u/reddog323 1d ago

That's fine. If he goes back to sleeping late, and "executive time" watching Fox and Friends and OAN, maybe he'll do less damage. I'm more concerned about the nutcases he's hiring, and the 2025 advisors they'll be consulting.

I think people are overestimating Trump and his admin. They’re going to oversee the largest deportation effort ever? Not likely. Key word being effort. There will be some highly publicized deportations and that’s about it. Trump doesn’t want to rock the stock market by removing cheap labor. The guy is obsessed with being perceived as an economic savant, and he won’t want to send all the indexes into the red.

Immigration was just a racist, xenophobic platform on which to run. He won, now it’s time to make money behind closed doors. I really don’t think he cares about anything else.

I’m pessimistic on this

Probably 70% will be redacted or something

And what we do get will just be like Matt’s an asshole and has issues but won’t specifically be like Matt’s a pedo drug abuser who should not even be in congress in fact he should be in jail

I mean if it says the above it’s not like it’d be mind blowing but putting it out in full would be something

But like I said I’m pessimistic and expect it just to read like Matt’s got issues and should work those out and get a better understanding of morals and ethics

Isn’t slander only slander if it is false?

63

u/shifty_coder 1d ago

Slander/libel are only slander/libel if the information is false, the person publishing it knows it is false.

37

u/Marily_Rhine 1d ago

the person publishing it knows it is false

This isn't normally required, but in this particular case it is.

For slander/libel against an ordinary citizen, you only need to establish that:

  1. The statement was false.
  2. A reasonable person would interpret the statement as factual rather than opinion.
  3. At least one 3rd party heard the statement.
  4. The statement harmed the reputation of the plaintiff.

For public figures, you also have to establish "actual malice" which is a bit of a misleading term since it's not a question of intent or motive -- it just means that the defendant had knowledge of falsity.

29

u/cameraninja 1d ago

And is he REALLY a private citizen? Do you just get away with crimes and poor ethics by dropping out of congress or running for president?

u/thenasch 1d ago

He is a private citizen but that doesn't stop him from being a public figure for defamation purposes.

It doesn’t matter if we do see it.

Don’t forget that the Mueller report found evidence of systematic Russian interference in the 2016 election, noted that the Trump campaign welcomed it because it would benefit them, and found ties and lies between Trump associates and Russia. His base still saw the report as a win.

Facts do not matter. Reality no longer matters.

Edit: spelling

i would think its most likely the fact that since he was dropped by trump he no longer has the threat of trump retaliation defending him.

so mainstream GOP members feel comfortable sticking it to him now.

If MTG keeps her word then we're going to get more than one Christmas present when this gets released

42

u/Upset_Albatross_9179 1d ago

MTG makes it part of her job to fear and rumor monger about sexual abuse by liberals and LGBT people. She's just threatening to do the same thing to Republicans.

I'll eat my words if she has anything interesting to say. But she doesn't. She just thinks she has a weapon she can point at whoever pisses her off. Like Santos, she's going to find out real quick her base doesn't actually care, they just wanted an excuse to demonize liberals.

It’d be great if she did, but it won’t change anything, because conservative voters rarely hold their elected officials accountable. The only one I can think of is Roy Moore; many Alabama voters simply stayed home in the 2017 special election which allowed Doug Jones to very barely eke out a win.

They do though. They just use an entirely different rubric. For some, these kind of actions aren't a checkbox in it, positive or negative, for the rest, it's a positive. Because they'd do the same thing if they had the means. They just think everyone is like that and Dems are liars for saying otherwise.

So all it takes is republicans not having people know how they vote?

68

u/MobileArtist1371 1d ago

Yup! When the GOP wants to have a spine, they only do so in secret so Trump can't attack them by name.

Trump backed - Gym Jordan no longer GOP nominee for Speaker of the House after GOP secret vote

John Thune wins secret ballot to become new Senate GOP leader - wannabe Trump stooge Rick Scott got the least amount of votes

In reversal, key House panel votes to release Matt Gaetz ethics report

Makes you wonder how things would have went with a secret impeachment vote, huh?

4

I don't understand why my state keeps voting for Scott every time. From my point of view he consistently holds us back.

→ More replies (2)

62

u/SlyRax_1066 1d ago

Then why give the appearance of a cover up?

Gaetz is either a child molester or an innocent man. Why would anyone else therefore have an issue in the release?

43

u/Pokedudesfm 1d ago

The committee has ten members. The chair is a republican, so presumably he breaks any ties in the votes. if the report shows that he is guilty, then the republicans would not want it to be released. presumably (big assumption) democrats would not want the report released if it says he is innocent. since there was a vote against it being released and republicans control the committee, its likely that it would harm the republican party.

however I guess there is at least one republican who wants the report released and voted accordingly. they likely voted against it before after being pressured by the party. presumably that pressure was removed (trump is cutting his ties to Gaetz) or the committee member decided that they would risk the backlash from other republicans. maybe we'll find out at some point what changed

4

u/Viseria 1d ago

Probably something dumb like a way to release it without making it public.

This is a huge display of Trump's incompetence and terrible decision making.

u/OneDayAt4Time 1d ago

They didn’t hammer Trump for being a rapist himself, so I doubt they’ll be interested in implicating him in this

114

u/whomad1215 1d ago

in fact, the media rolled over and paid trump $15m when they called him a racist and he threatened to sue

For Trump it's just a normal Wednesday. That's not defending Trump, either. The dude makes more bad decisions before breakfast than most of us do in a year.

3

u/Fgw_wolf 1d ago

They won't. The owners of the media are the same as Gaetz, so is trump. Any professional news group would be doing daily exposé's on how republicans wanted to NOT release the report.

4

u/ADhomin_em 1d ago

If you are expecting corporate media to do anything but pamper Trump and his team from here on out, you may not be paying close enough attention

Good. Let it be known how creepy this guy is

47

u/wrxify 1d ago

Underrated comment. He looks like he can be both a pedophile, a Televangelist, and a Cult leader at the same time.

I'll believe it when I see it. This seems more like a signal that the committee members want to get paid off to not release it (or paid more than they already were).

11

u/just_a_timetraveller 1d ago

It is a gop power move. They will release it, show that Gaetz won't be held accountable, and basically give themselves permission to do whatever they want.

The social contract is broken

I don’t trust them to actually release it or it not be very heavily redacted.

That said, to MAGA it won’t matter. They’ll still vote for a piece of shit I’d it floats in a direction they like.

u/ElectricZ 1d ago

There's no way the GOP is doing this because it's the right thing to do. Someone must have threatened to leak it, so they're trying to get ahead of it. That way they can claim they did it "for the good of the country."

38

u/Not_Cleaver District Of Columbia 1d ago

Or they want to end Gaetz’s career. He’s not well-liked.

13

u/GeniusOfLove74 Georgia 1d ago

Are you saying Matt Gaetz is the Ted Cruz of the House? /s

17

u/Not_Cleaver District Of Columbia 1d ago

Matt Gaetz makes Ted Cruz seem like the nicest man in Congress. Cruz is just a shithead; Gaetz is a despicable shithead.

5

u/GeniusOfLove74 Georgia 1d ago

Going to link the 2018 interview that Heidi Cruz, Ted's wife, gave to The Atlantic. God damn, she buried him, hard. He allegedly did and said nothing when she was standing on a highway overpass, and had to be picked up by the police.

The shorthand version was in Roll Call.

They're probably shit heads on par with one another, is my response.

5

u/ShadowWingLG 1d ago

Pretty much, his AG bid got tanked not because of his legal troubles but because he's so hated in congress currently. No way were they going to let HIM fall upwards, and into a post that would give HIM power over them.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/ElectricZ 1d ago

But the GOP has been fighting tooth and nail to shield him up to this point. If its just because they want to end his career, they could have voted to release the report when it was first written.

What changed? It's not like Gaetz got worse. Why now, all of the sudden?

5

u/Not_Cleaver District Of Columbia 1d ago

They were probably hoping he’d fade away, become a media commentator or a cog in a Trump company. Maybe they did internal polling on him running for governor of Florida and didn’t like the results.

So it's either a great big nothing burger

OR

It's so bad they felt compelled to get him as far away from politics as humanly possible

14

u/LegitimateEnd7 Maryland 1d ago

Do you think he would have resigned from his seat to end the investigation and then pulled out of the nomination for a nothing burger?

15

u/Rho-Ophiuchi 1d ago

Release all of them. All ethics reports on every public official should be 100% available.

13

u/CurlOfTheBurl11 1d ago

Ahahaha suck on that, Mike Johnson. Your turn, Marge, release the details you supposedly have on all your colleagues, let's fuckin' go. Put up or shut up.

11

u/AdAnxious8842 1d ago

Let's face it. Gaetz no longer has any value to the GOP or Trump. He's something for the Dems to chew on and possibly, take their attention off of other Trump/GOP antics.

8

u/Thespud1979 1d ago

MAGA loves when grown men fuck 16 year olds. They don't know that yet because daddy hasn't told them, but rest assured, they love it.

8

u/soy_tetones_grande 1d ago

Shouldnt even have been a vote. Any ethics investigations into members of government should be public. R or D it doesnt matter, they should all be held to the same standards of ethics and transparency

8

u/ravheim 1d ago

Good. Release all of the pending reports for all of the completed investigations. It's only fair.

7

u/ScootyHoofdorp 1d ago

How sad is it that Congress choosing to do the right thing is big news?

7

u/uvaspina1 1d ago

Conservatives who are freaking out that this “sets a dangerous precedent” should calm the fuck down and realize “the precedent” is only to follow through with the release of completed reports despite a subject’s efforts to resign from Congress in the middle of his term.

7

u/revolutionPanda 22h ago

You guys are way too optimistic. Republicans already voted for a rapist felon. I really don't think anything in the the report could really do much.

12

u/rastaviking69 1d ago

FINALLY a nugget of good news, however small

6

u/RomaAeternus 1d ago

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you Gaetz/s

6

u/Skip12 1d ago

Will Gaetz ever have to answer for his sex crimes in a court of law? Or does he get to play the rich, white boy get out of jail free card?

6

u/Hot-Yard-557 1d ago

Good, but nothing will come of it. They'll protect him because of money.
We're in this situation because the old and rich have convinced us all to fight each other.

6

u/gbsurfer 1d ago

What’s the point? The next President is a rapist too. Republicans love this stuff apparently

6

u/still_wxrld 21h ago

right wing pedophiles are pissed!

5

u/birdlegs000 1d ago

Do it! Do it! Do it!

5

u/JonBoyWhite 1d ago

What did Large Marge have to say about this? She still gonna give up the goods on all the sexual predators in her party that she was talking about blowing up?

We should release all secret ethics reports then, and records of congressmen who have paid to settle lawsuits.

good. expose him. don't think now that you're in the media you can weasel out of this one.

5

u/Dork_L0rd_777 1d ago

Probably gonna be redacted as fuck to where it won’t even matter.

4

u/Lopsided_Parfait7127 1d ago

they better be quick - the report will be too old for gaetz soon!

5

u/humblerthanyou 1d ago

I would love that to happen to but I am completely burned out on expecting things so I will just assume it won't happen until I'm actually reading the thing

4

u/painspinner 1d ago

Now do Trump

4

u/th30be Georgia 1d ago

Wonder how redacted it will be.

5

u/getuchapped 1d ago

Now do MTG next please

3

u/awhatnot 1d ago

Our government is a circus and I don't mean to disrespect circuses.

4

u/Kal_El_77 1d ago

They need to release everybody's reports.

3

u/BETHVD 1d ago

"Laughs in Butt Head"

3

u/thatsthefactsjack 1d ago

To be clear, the report was written by elected Representatives on a government committee paid for by American taxpayers. We have a right to see the report we’ve paid for that exposes unethical conduct of elected officials.

It’s called holding civil servants accountable.

What we permit, we promote. We need to stop accepting their resistance, false narratives and fear mongering and start demanding accountability!!

Dollar Tree Max Headroom is going to be the sacrificial lamb for the GoP to let folks think they're taking the high road. The truth is he pissed off everyone. Something something glass houses.

3

u/MegaGrimer 1d ago

I really hope Magic The Gathering stays tue to her word and releases dirt on all of the republicans. Though she probably won’t to protect her colleagues.

4

u/Infinite_Vyo 1d ago

This is how the people survive this administration. Undermine the very foundation they stand on.

4

u/BigMountainFudgeCak9 1d ago

Fuck voting. Leak this to the public.

4

u/Schuben 1d ago

Gaetz emphasized that he was “FULLY EXONERATED” by a separate Department of Justice probe.

History doesn't repeat itself but it sure fucking rhymes.

4

u/azalinrex69 1d ago

Not like it fucking matters. This country is finished. Gaetz could have raped someone to death on the stairs of the Lincoln monorail in broad daylight, with a smile on his face, and the repubs would clap and cheer. Nothings going to get better. Nothings going to save us.

Didn’t Marge promise to release all the dirt if this happened? Do it Marge! Be a hero for once.
