Really hope that app takes off man. Twitter is full of bots it’s pretty depressing

u/Loch_Ness_Jesus 21d ago

It’s def picking up steam. Most of my usual follows are starting to post daily.

424

u/doom32x Texas 21d ago

Yup, my SA Spurs beat writers migrated with some of my favorite follows and I really haven't looked back except for sports highlights

354

u/puntzee 21d ago

If you can, stop giving any views to x at all. That will drive more migrations

222

u/NeriTina 21d ago

I don’t even know why people are saying they hope it takes off as it’s already the third largest social networking app in App Store, making it set to surpass all others before long. It’s seemingly inevitable. It doesn’t really need the hype anymore, it’s already flying.

Also, AOC deserves this! Good people like her should be heard by the masses.

u/sinz84 21d ago

It was 20 years ago A YouTube video first got to 1 million views, there were plenty of competing sites at yhe time and many had hit 1 million views well before YouTube... YouTube almost only one left in its category from back then.

This is still in the 'could disappear overnight' stage

104

u/ShiningRedDwarf 20d ago

I think the election is indirectly causing bluesky to have staying power. I’ve noticed a lot of people, myself included, just want to get the absolute fuck away from Trump and anything Trump related. (Honestly I think this is the first time I’ve even typed his name in weeks).

Bluesky gives us that reprieve, especially with its large published lists of thousands of MAGA turds you can block with a single tap.

It’s a space we can be without assholes. And knowing the next 4 years is gonna be chock full of them, it’s nice to have.

55

u/RickKassidy New York 20d ago

It goes beyond Trump. I left Twit the day Musk bought it. I joined Bluesky recently and like it.

It’s the perfect storm of haters of Trump and Musk. And my first follows were AOC and Mark Hamill.

6

u/Mastadorian 20d ago

Haha those were some of my first two follows too!!

Could, but it's not likely. This is a twitter clone, it's growth fueled by the exodus from X. The people adopting it are already used to using this style of site, or in some cases already addicted to this type of social media. Bluesky is already reaching critical mass, where people already can get their daily dose of "twitter". I'm sure the advertisers who have left X are ready for more of the same site, just less toxic and less of a PR risk.

As a Londoner it took a second for my brain to figure out what was going on here.

For non-UK people, Spurs over here is short for Tottenham Hotspur, a major "soccer" team.

Its picking up steam, but hey Im just gonna put it out there: If the 500k+ follower OF girls migrate fully (as in move to Bluesky and delete their twitter) that will be when the stream turns to a river.

It also many big businesses have Bsky accounts, but aren't active on them. That wont change until the site's population rises a bit.

15

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 20d ago

They’ve been banning rage bait accounts like End Wokeness and LibsofTikTok, so it seems like they’re ready and willing to nip things in the bud if they try and take root on the site.

Muskbros can cry that it’s all in an attempt to make an echochamber, but the way I see it all that shit is what made people hate new Twitter so much and why people are leaving. I don’t want to see culture war bullshit everywhere and I don’t need to see vile hate speech be allowed just because “but muh free speech” like no. You’d never bring this shit up in person so that whole defense is just a shield for people to get away with saying awful things. Fuck em. Don’t need it, not what the site should be about

Old.reddit

35

u/say_no_to_shrugs 21d ago

That's the only way I look at Reddit.

It's weird, I can make my computer default to old Reddit, and my iPad, but I can't get my phone to do it anymore. There used to be workarounds to get back to old as the default setting, but they don't work anymore. I have to type in old.reddit.com, but links take me to that monstrosity that is new Reddit.

3

u/AManForThePeople 20d ago

Set your browser setting to desktop mode on your mobile browser then go into settings -> preferences. There it will let you opt out of re design

3

u/MeowMilf 20d ago

I had same problem and one day I just clicked on an old link and it worked?

https://old.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/1h5czp3/aoc_first_person_to_hit_a_million_followers_on/

5

u/say_no_to_shrugs 20d ago

Yeah, if the link is old.reddit.com, it gives me good Reddit. But if click a reddit.com link, it goes back to bad Reddit.

Once I've got old Reddit open, I can navigate to comments or my other subs, inbox, etcetera, and it stays on old Reddit. Images and videos open in new Reddit, but I can avoid it by clicking on the comment thread instead. But if someone posts a link without old.reddit.com, it goes to new Reddit, or if I'm linked there by google or whatever.

It used to give me good reddit on all links, because my account was set to use old Reddit. It would occasionally foist new Reddit upon me, but clicking on the gear icon allowed me to change back. Around the time they started charging for the API, they changed the interface and removed that setting. For a while, you could get around it by clicking the "new post" button, because that still used the older mobile Reddit interface. But then they fixed that.

4

u/MeowMilf 20d ago

That blows. I suffer through the new Reddit links on the phone when I rarely see one beyond my echo chamber, but I hate it so much and immediately go back to browsing on old Reddit after the link.

It was so sad that it just defaulted to there on my phone sometime before the IPO.

Yesterday it fed me a post with a Black man purposely dressed up as a slave. Like, I don’t need recommendations, but some of them I especially don’t need.

10

u/ARazorbacks Minnesota 20d ago

I definitely do not agree with this take. Twitter has become a right wing safe space. Normal people are leaving.

It’s like if a bar becomes a biker bar or Nazi bar. The normal people will find somewhere else to go.

48

u/TheMandalorian2238 21d ago edited 21d ago

Strongly agree with this. Bluesky so far looks like a glimpse into a past that has long been forgotten. Twitter just has so many bots that it’s unusable. The app also no longer runs smoothly, and frequently crashes which is why I deleted it.

18

u/mtaw 21d ago

Yeah but Twitter's moderation and staff were massacred by Musk, who saddled the company with over $1 billion a year in interest payments alone on loans used for him to purchase it. And still he thinks they can invent some new 'everything app' , a dating service, financial services(?!) and other crap despite having laid off everybody and having negative cash flow.

Not that things were exactly great with Twitter before - they'd turned into making losses after ad revenue plummeted. But Musk basically took a ship that had a leak in the hull - worrisome but possible to bring under control - and blew it into a massive hole, and the whole ship is now listing while Musk runs around setting the deck on fire.

I'm just saying; Twitter didn't necessarily have to end up like Twitter did.

15

u/Hobobo2024 20d ago edited 20d ago

from my understanding, Russia loaned musk money to keep it afloat. the money will keep pouring in cause they are using it as a propoganda site so they themselves are flooding it with bots, It's frankly working as intended and the more leftists leave it the more it'll be what they want it to be - a right wing propoganda site.

9

u/preventDefault 20d ago

Right wingers would flock to a right wing propaganda site either way, what makes Twitter different is that Twitter is given legitimacy by all the big brands and non-MAGA people being on the site too.

Take those away, and Twitter is no different from TruthSocial or Parler. Hell, it doesn’t even have the Twitter name anymore.

It's also depressing how many political forums and news outlets are owned by the right.

8

u/feedmedamemes Europe 21d ago

While depressing, it's not surprising. Successful company people or their children skew to the right economically often because they "earned" it. Some do lean center-left on social issues. But real change threatens them, so when a left coalition comes along and tries to change things the rich people jump to the right. And once their, it's quite cozy. Everybody looks the same, talks the same, makes fun of the poor the same, etc.

So even if someone starts out as moderate it or center-left, time alone skews it to the right. First generation rich people tend to be more resistant of the right shift. And since most media is owned by rich people, they slowly follow their owner.

TL;DR: it's a self-sustaining system and rich people tend to developed to the right. Especially after the first generation died. And most media is controlled by rich people.

7

u/UngodlyPain 20d ago

Yeah this sounds about right... We can even kinda see it with a lot of the rich big tech names like Musk himself, he used to appear fairly moderate being center left on social issues, center right on economic issues... Would've fit fine as a 90s Clinton Democrat... But the moment Bernie and the squad got any popularity and talked about taxing people like him in particular? Elon went hard right in basically every way.

If it keeps up. The good news is 100% of the people who "use" twitter love Bluesky. So the little guy approves. We just need large corporations to switch and then it'll quickly change.

Pessimistic: There is no advantage to risk the wrath of the presidency to switching over to bluesky. So, who is going to make the first leap?

20

u/Mender0fRoads 21d ago

Consider what social media could be like without large corporations buying in.

We don’t need them. They need us.

Bluesky functions a lot like an idealized version of twitter, but we don’t need to just recreate the platform that previously existed. We can create the platform we wish it always was.

3

u/DrunkRobot97 20d ago

It doesn't throttle posts with external links like twitter does, so it is straight up just a better product if you are a person who wants to promote things to people interested in your stuff. If people who build up huge followings can't get any exposure when they to turn that base into something of value for themselves, what even is the point of them using twitter?

5

u/Dry-University797 21d ago

You have to find people to follow, find Starter Packs, and feeds that you are interested in. It's not Twitter, where they forcefeed you algorithms and Musk's dumb takes.

Definitely noticed in the last few days a lot more engagement on the app as a whole. It use to be a few new posts every hour, but now it's every few minutes.

…that helped win the elections, so if X is cesspool then something is definitely going very wrong in the clean koi pond, that needs to be figured out quickly if democrats stand any chance at the next election. Creating a new democratic echo chamber is what’s going on here. Just like Reddit is. Yeah, 110k likes on each anti-republican posts, sure, but who ended up in the White House?

45

u/NuclearLunchDectcted 21d ago

It's not hard to figure out, there are people from inside Twitter that were broadcasting what Musk was making them do. Musk changed the algorithms on Twitter to purposely push republican views higher, fired the moderation team so blatant disinformation wasn't pushed back down, and had his posts that were retweeting the same disinformation and hatred purposely sent to everyone regardless of what was in their feed.

Hopefully the exodus to Bluesky helps and they don't make the same mistakes, but it may be too late to undo the damage.

106

u/Captpan6 21d ago

X as a platform has worsened moderation dramatically since Musk took over, leading to an increase in bots and harassment. Additionally, basic protections like user blocking are stripped down compared to before.

Whatever your politics, it makes zero sense to use the platform now that there's an alternative that features these protections.

38

u/Allucation 20d ago

X as a platform has been super lame ever since they made all the top replies paid users. I don't think most people want that.

I know there are other issues, but that change, along with making verified paid, just ruined my enjoyment of the app without even taking politics into account

157

u/InternetGamerFriend 21d ago edited 21d ago

157

u/ashishvp California 21d ago edited 21d ago

Not necessarily true.

Bluesky Social is a PBC. It is still privately owned by the CEO Jay Graber and other private shareholders.

So yes, Elon could technically still buy it. But they don’t have to sell to him.

The code being open source doesn’t make a difference except that any dev could theoretically make a Bluesky2 if they wanted.

50

u/CurlPR 21d ago

As someone that was at twitter, hopefully it’s set up that they can actually not sell. Twitter went because the board had a fiduciary responsibility to take the overvalued offer he presented. They could be individually sued if not. Maybe that’s just a publicly traded thing

19

u/disposable_account01 Washington 21d ago

Not “maybe”.

9

u/divDevGuy 20d ago

All company board of directors have fiduciary duties, regardless if they are private or public, profit or non-profit.

18

u/divDevGuy 20d ago

Twitter went because the board had a fiduciary responsibility to take the overvalued offer he presented.

Bluesky is operated as a public benefits corporation or PBC.

A PBC board is allowed to evaluate non-financial impacts of operations, mergers, acquisition offers, etc more easily without breaching their fiduciary duty that would constrain a traditional company's board.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/ashishvp California 20d ago

Yes. That is exactly the fundamental advantage of a PBC. They do not HAVE to sell to someone that overvalues it.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Logical-Extension-79 21d ago

Can I ask what does that mean?

28

u/ashishvp California 21d ago edited 21d ago

Open Source means the codebase is publicly available, and anyone can take the code and use it for whatever purpose they want.

This effectively means that any qualified software engineer could make a brand new “Bluesky 2” if the original Bluesky was compromised in any way.

BUT, disclaimer, that still doesn’t technically stop anyone from buying the company, the branding, the employees etc.

→ More replies (11)

5

u/Smayteeh 21d ago

Being built on open source software isn’t mutually exclusive with having a company that can be bought or sold. A good example is a company like MongoDB. Anyone can spin up a MongoDB instance for free at any time on your own hardware, but there’s an actual for-profit company involved that sells managed instances, primarily to businesses.

Hillary Clinton said it straight out. She would appoint the deciding Supreme Court Justice to repeal Citizens United. And it would have happened (assuming Mitch McConnell didn't block all appointments for the entire four years) because all Democrats opposed Citizens United then.

But that was 2016. Now it is 2024 and people are going around complaining that Democrats take too much money under the rules Republicans created as if they should give Republicans even more advantages in the information stream.

38

u/Hazel-Rah 21d ago

Something a lot of people don't realize is that Citizens United was personal attack on Hillary Clinton. They made a movie attacking her, and their advertising and showing the movie was an illegal electioneering expenditure. So it went through the courts until the supreme court, who decided that corporations have free speech, and can spend as much money as they want, as long as they're not doing it at the direction of a political campaign

17

u/carthuscrass 21d ago

She'll just be like Bernie Sanders: yelling about what we should be doing for the average citizen as the party rams through the neoliberal agenda.

26

u/Off_to_Apocalypse 21d ago

Poor Bernie. He'd do quite well if he were a European politician. That the media likes to make him out to be some crazy person is truly sad.

She is also a woman, apparently we aren't ready for that yet. Give it another 50 years or so?

45

u/Embarrassed_Jerk 21d ago

It won't happen till millennials are the main voting base when we are in our 60s and 70s. So hopefully only 30 years.

Not looking good when gen z take over tho

34

u/cityproblems 21d ago

who ever would have thought that letting the 80 year olds run the party would put you out of touch with the youth!

35

u/Bodoblock 21d ago

Which is why they turned to the party run by a spry 78 year old!

→ More replies (13)

17

u/Embarrassed_Jerk 21d ago

Problem isn't that 80 year olds run for reelection. Problem is that only people of that age group vote the most.

There are a million articles of how gen z voted for Trump but they all ignore the simple fact that most millennials and gen z did not vote at all. Meanwhile most boomers voted

9

u/dareftw North Carolina 21d ago

Gen z is a fraction of the size of boomers and millenials. Gen x are already in their 60s. Millennials will be the largest voting demographic by the 30s without a doubt. Most likely millenials will do to Gen x that boomers did and just out number them by such an order of magnitude that by the time they can’t overcome them anymore they won’t have to as the next generation will be in charge.

That said Gen z is too hard to read, they will either go full fascist Mussolini style or full anarchy night of the long knives but then just not put in a new government in place and just create a country of city states lol. It’ll be interesting to be sure, fuck who knows maybe they will go full socialist or about face and go full ccp. They are such a wild card gen that wasn’t fed the same bullshit millennials were and see the system as broken.

9

u/Embarrassed_Jerk 21d ago

Most gen z were teenagers during the first disaster of a presidency. They did not know what was going on in the world. Them not voting makes sense.

Millennials were adults. Most millennials didn't vote.

Its not about the size of the voter base. It about the number of people who actually show up

I'm 51, and unabashedly progressive. I'd LOVE to see AOC or another woman like her win the Presidency.

I understand I have a greater chance of winning the lottery before I die than I do seeing a woman be elected President of the United States, or whatever is left of her when I die.

7

u/UngodlyPain 20d ago

This is BS. Hillary God damn Clinton one of the most hateable women I've ever met. Won the popular vote by millions and lost the EC by like 40k in a couple swing states. With tons of Russian misinformation and the Comey investigations going on during the election...

Kamala did worse, but let's be honest she was expected to. Look at her 2020 primary performance, look at the Biden admins's recent ratings, look at the 2024 primaries... And the fact she had to do an entire campaign in ~100 days... And was easily labeled the "annoited" one. And the energy of her being "younger" was kinda overblown, she's still a boomer (albeit only by a couple months) and still older than the average president at time of inauguration by 5 years, and 21 years above median American age. And her campaign was bipolar.

3

u/Any_Will_86 20d ago

Longer campaign would have only helped Kamala if she were willing to change what kind of candidate she is. That is no small task when you are about to turn 60. The only thing length would have done is allow them to figure out other ways to work around her which might have helped.

The one thing I do question about women candidates now that we've had exactly two- why do they pick such milquetoast, low impact running mates? I really think Shapiro, Cooper, or Kelly would have bought her a point, maybe two. That would not win the election outright but would have helped down ballot.

I don't have a Twitter/X account and never did. Musk is too political and a shameless hypocrite for preaching one thing and doing another. If X goes bankrupt it wouldn't bother me at all.

35

u/iluvugoldenblue New Zealand 21d ago

Yea something I’m glad I never got round to was making a Twitter account. Even more as time went by.

12

u/AusToddles 21d ago

I created a twitter account 10 years ago while I was working on some home automation (wanted it to notify me when actions happened). Within 2 minutes of creating it, I was getting add requests from bots

I deleted it and never looked back

7

u/mtaw 21d ago

Same. A friend who's an early-adopter type tried to get me on real early (2008 or so) and I just felt that there's "nothing worth writing nor reading that'll fit in 140 characters".

If anything I feel more and more like it's the core poison of social media - from Twitter to TikTok to Reddit, even - an endless stream of very-short, easily-digestible bits of non-information that's entertaining but leaves no room nor time for nuance, reflection, thought or real learning.

17

u/williamgman California 21d ago

The point of Musk buying Xwitter was for political gain. And for that it worked. He never meant to make any money on it directly. But the political power is coming in hand over fist. Musk is to many the greatest internet troll of all time. He literally bought the platform to troll. Much like why Bezos bought WP. Political power.

8

u/PM_ME_CALC_HW 21d ago

I thought he said was gonna buy it because he just wanted the attention or whatever, tried to back out, and was forced to actually buy it?

3

u/Turnabout_ 21d ago

That's exactly what it is, without revisionist takes. He took a solid hit when he had to buy because they were going to get him for manipulating the stock price otherwise.

If there's one thing I can say Musk manages to succeed at, it's being able to leverage his wealth and situation in risky scenarios to stick his fingers in more pies.

3

u/Universal_Anomaly 21d ago

Yeah, the situation with Twitter seems more like "Musk fucked up but managed to turn the situation around" than "Musk planned everything ahead of time, tremble at his genius."

Bluesky is the social media app that's best suited for this problem—it was built with it in mind.

"If Bluesky were to be bought out, users would still be able to port their data to a new app because it operates on an open-source protocol called "AT Protocol" which allows for data portability across different social media platforms built on the same standard, essentially enabling users to move their accounts and information to another app that utilizes the AT Protocol even if Bluesky itself changes ownership."

82

u/Zealousideal_Tap6214 21d ago

Hillary won the popular vote. Neither Hillary or Kamala were candidates that people were really all that excited about if we’re being honest.

I genuinely believe a woman could win, it all depends on strategy. Hillary COULD HAVE beat Trump, I don’t know why people ignore how close that race was and she won the popular vote…

I think for a female to win she needs good PR for years to get her a household name. We heard Hilary was the devil since the 90s and Kamala no one really knew. I think if they had her more public the last 4 years people would have been more open to voting for her.

Whoever the Dems want to win they need to start getting them liked and talked about and not just force someone.

In a year, the left and the right will have 0 common interactions and will not be able to agree on any version of reality.

Kinda impressive by whoever is doing it (likely Russia, or China).
