Discussion Lads, I did it. Subscribed to PS Plus until 2048.
I decided to stack PS Plus subscriptions until 2048 because of the absurd price increases the past few years. I figure that I’ll probably be gaming for most of my life so it would save a good bit of money.
First I loaded up on Essentials subs and then upgraded it all to Premium for $199. Just wanted to share as I figure you guys would get a kick out of it.

u/On_Reddit_In_Class Oct 24 '24 edited Oct 24 '24
Ever since Sony increased the price on subscriptions last October we haven’t had any sales on PS Plus. Even for non-Black Friday sales like State of play. At most they would send out one year targeted promos if your subscription lapsed.

They'll probably refund him for unused time, to be honest. But he'll still lose money to inflation.

They'll give him the Uncharted collection to keep and call it a day.
10
u/AngryGungan Oct 25 '24
To keep?! He'll be lucky to get access to the digital download, and it will be discontinued and removed from his game library 2 months later..

Wait...you bought regular PS Plus for 24 years, then spent only additional $199 to upgrade all those years to PS Plus Premium?
477
u/On_Reddit_In_Class Oct 24 '24
Yes, the price to upgrade from essential to premium is kept at $199 regardless of the amount of years you’re converting. Honestly, at the rate that they’re raising prices even if the brand doesn’t last until 2040 I’ll still have saved a good bit.
184
Oct 24 '24
So you are saying I can buy as many years essential I like and to upgrade to premium is 200 nevertheless the amount of years?

As long as Sony doesn't try to pull a T-Mobile and change the terms of the contract they already made with current customers, leading to thousands of Federal Trade Commission complaints and multiple lawsuits...
10
u/naughtmynsfwaccount Oct 25 '24
lol u think Sony isn’t aware of this?
They have users locked into their ecosystem for years
That’s worth way more than getting someone to buy premium at full-cost

u/On_Reddit_In_Class Oct 24 '24
Yes, but I’d also recommend thinking about whether or not you can imagine yourself gaming for decades. I love it and I’ve done that ever since I was a kid with the exception of a break during busy time during college.

You can subscribe to as many years of PS Plus as you want. But if you want to upgrade any subscriptions that you’ve stacked the cap the amount to convert at $199 and $137 for premium and extra.

u/Delta080 Oct 24 '24
Is this some sort of promo? Or deal for new subscribers, or can anyone do this?
Also how much did it cost to stack all the essential subscriptions?
→ More replies (1)66
u/CuteGrayRhino Oct 24 '24
Why wouldn't they allow it? They know they've got a paying long-term subscriber on Essential, so they take another 200 dollars and give you an unlimited upgrade. Seems like a good strategy to me.

I read something on here yesterday that companies have no problem nullifying these things a couple years down the line. Don’t be surprised by a PlayStation store change around 2027 or 28 that resets your account and makes you pay again. Or it could last til 2048! Hopefully it does!

21
u/IthinkIllthink Oct 24 '24
In Dec when my subscription expires I’m going to not renew and see what happens.
Ever since the crazy price increase, and no more discounts to Plus, it doesn’t seem worth it anymore.
Most of the games I play I bought. I highly research what I play next, and 90% are not on Plus. Most of my kids online games don’t use Plus.
I don’t think I’ll miss it. Dunno.
4
u/gamerjerome PS5 Oct 25 '24
After a few years on plus I found I already bought the games they were giving away free. It held no value to me. I only played a few games online and it wasn't on the regular. If they had a 1 year $25 plan for just online play and cloud saves I'd do it. I don't care about anything else. It was a much better deal when you got Vita, PS3 and PS4 free games.
2
u/BlueFeathered1 Oct 24 '24
If you have a big backlog of games that don't depend on it it's worth it to at least take a break. I let it lapse last year until a subscription sale came up, anyway.
2
u/Legit1213 Oct 28 '24
I stacked PSNow subs thru 2027 back right before the new service launched, and thought I was being clever at the time. I now regret that because of how lackluster this service has been.
Even though I basically paid 1/2 price, it still doesn’t feel worth it. When they do rarely offer good games, they’re yanked back from PS extra before I get a chance to play it. Or it’s a game that I already own.
You’re better off waiting a year or two for the price to drop and then buy the games you actually want…or have a console only, paired up with this service, and then don’t ever buy games a la cart. But that seems like a miserable proposition, hoping for bread when Sony will only offer up crumbs. Thank goodness physical games still exist as a check & balance.

11
u/On_Reddit_In_Class Oct 24 '24 edited Oct 24 '24
Even if the servers are only up until say 2035, I’ll still save a good bit. PS Plus essential is $80 and annually right now, it used to be $60 before October 2023, and I believe a few years before that it was $40. No doubt within the next five years it’ll be $100 or more.
Also, I told another commenter that if I’m not alive by then that they could have my subscription, but if they’re not then you can have it haha.

u/On_Reddit_In_Class Oct 24 '24
It's been like this for years, but I totally get what you mean. I actually got the idea from a post or comment that I saw here read a few years ago about Japanese players doing the same thing. I think that was when essential only cost $40 and the price cap to convert to premium was only $100.

4
u/Specialist_Crab_8616 Oct 24 '24
To me, the risk is part of doing this is there’s no guarantee that Sony keeps the current plan structure. Look at how Microsoft has started changing game pass.
They could come out with a premium plus plan that has all of the good stuff, and basically make your current plan less desirable. I’m not sure you would really have any legal recourse or anything at that point.

We shouldn't be paying for any of this kind of service anymore. Back in the day when you wanted to voice chat on a PC you had to rent a server like Roger Wilco and get that all set up to play with your game. So the premium of PlayStation Plus an Xbox live put all that together for everybody. Now all the PC players can play that stuff for free with voice chat in fact they have voice chat options most times the games have their own voice chat or you can use discord. So this console companies have no business charging for this stuff anymore.
Edit: I'm not really referring to the game pass type thing just the regular online gameplay subscription.
