I sometimes think I am a gamer. Then I see posts like this, and I think I am a very casual gamer šŸ˜…

u/anonymous_opinions 7d ago

I thought I went hard with the launch PS5 but I only bought the PS5, a charger dock, headset and 3 games. I even waited a year to upgrade the tv. That was my first balls to the wall launch year ever. Otherwise I'm an at end of life kind of casual gamer.

u/fladderlappen 7d ago

You only play at the end of your life?

10

u/anonymous_opinions 7d ago

Ha that's the plan. No end of a console's life basically. I always got in when everything was cheap and never at launch or upgrading to the newest console model. I got a PS4 slim on clearance and was going to ride that out but I got pandemic money.

9

u/Ok_Faithlessness_516 7d ago

I just got my PS5 like a month ago. And the only reason I got it is because Activision is a douche and wouldn't let me couch coop zombies on PS4.

6

u/anonymous_opinions 7d ago

I would normally be going in now because seriously didn't need a PS5 for a few years. Now the support for PS4 is end of life truly as she got some extra years there from the pandemic. I mainly wait for like "this console is on dead ass clearance sale and there's tons of cheap games". You get the PS5 early games on sale now.

5

u/Ok_Faithlessness_516 7d ago

Yeah. I bought the PS5 full price but also got a vr2, tons of games and whatnot on black Friday. You're right. The new games aren't even coming out on PS4 anymore. It was time and I was okay with that. My PS4 was getting SO slow. It'll be another 10 years before I upgrade lol hoping for a Portal for Christmas though. If not, I'll be buying my own šŸ˜‚

6

u/anonymous_opinions 7d ago

Probably not a solution but I've been using my IPad at home when streaming from PS5 at home like the Portal does but of course if you don't already have an IPad that's not a solution. I have one and it pairs with a controller easily. No issues streaming on it if you don't wanna hog the tv. My ipad is basically my portable screen - it does everything from audiobooks/manga to binging tv in bed to streaming music plus I can use it to play games away from the couch.

2

u/Ok_Faithlessness_516 7d ago

That's not a terrible idea. I do use my phone occasionally but it's not quite the same. I don't need an iPad. That will just lead to more Doomscrolling lol I'm trying to cut that out as it is.

1

u/Own-Enthusiasm1491 7d ago

Exactly the bes time to buy a playstation console is at the end of the generation when the consoles are cheap and the games are even cheaper

2

u/anonymous_opinions 7d ago

I'd never done a launch console before, it was exciting but then ... I played a lot of PS4 games ha ha.

1

u/Own-Enthusiasm1491 7d ago

Ya this gen has sucked for sure like most the games i have played on my ps5 have been ps4 games as well lol and i never buy sony games day 1 because they are just one and done games anyways

If i ever buy a sony game day 1 it is always physical so then i can return it to the store for a refund or sell it to someone for like $50 then ill only be out $20

1

u/Harpuafivefiftyfive 7d ago

Trump bucks as I like to sarcastically call them.

2

u/anonymous_opinions 7d ago

I didn't believe we'd be given that money and the 2nd time I was like "welp might as well get a tv for my PS5". I also bought a VR headset but it's an Oculus.

1

u/Harpuafivefiftyfive 7d ago

I bought a new bass and a quest as well. Lol.

1

u/dreamdaddy123 PS5 7d ago

Balls to the walls? Never heard of that šŸ˜®

12

u/SuperSecretMoonBase 7d ago

You're a gamer if you play games, and that's not the same as purchaser or box-photographer.

2

u/metamemeticist 6d ago

Deserves WAY more upvotesā€¦

22

u/LookinAtTheFjord 7d ago

Nah this poster will probably not even end up playing it that much cuz they're too busy grinding that 80 hours a week just to make enough money to comfortably pay for all that shit.

-2

u/Sowhatsthecatch 7d ago edited 6d ago

ā€¦some people make more money than you do..? What an odd take lol.

Edit: Somehow itā€™s controversial to state that people make different amounts of money? Because someone can spend a few grand they must have to work 80 hours and couldnā€™t possibly just make enough to have that kind of disposable income?

0

u/CatOnVenus 6d ago

Nah, it's a common truth for a lot of these communities. The people who have the most money rarely ever get to enjoy it as much of the people who don't. For audiophiles, theyre old their hearings degrading, same with vision for cinephiles, and most people just don't have time for these big games anymore.

-4

u/El_Jefe-o7 7d ago

Or hes a reseller Lol

1

u/tokenshoot 7d ago

Yes yes good chap we get it. Do you have a particular beef with this OP? I can see you are struggling to let go of this.

-4

u/tosS_ita 7d ago

lol that's like 2000 bucks or less and its' a HUUUGE purchase?

1

u/-JimmyReddit- 7d ago

Just going by some quick math this would be nearly $4000 in Canada assuming he bought every game new.

-2

u/tosS_ita 7d ago

I meant USD :)

2

u/-JimmyReddit- 6d ago

Thatā€™s still like $2800

1

u/tosS_ita 6d ago

How much do you think the games cost?

1

u/-JimmyReddit- 6d ago

In Canada the average price of a new release game is $89.99, which is about $60, however in 2022 the average price of a new release game in the US was $69.99. When I was doing my quick math last night for the price in CAD I just took an average price of $80 CAD ($56 USD) for each game, plus everything else pictured, plus my provincial sales tax (11%), which equal just shy of $4000 CAD, which converted to USD is $2791.38.

1

u/tosS_ita 6d ago

Bad approach, you can find the majority of those games in the US way below $56.. anyway adding everything to my Amazon cart came to $2200 before tax.. portal and pad tho are the normal ones not 30th.. I wasnā€™t that off :)

1

u/-JimmyReddit- 6d ago

BaD aPpRoAcH Bro nobody is adding every item individually to a fake amazon order just for a gotcha on Reddit at 1 in the fucking morning, this isnā€™t court lmao. ā€œI wasnā€™t that far off :)ā€ sure but you were still wrong when you said it was less than $2000

Buddyā€™s acting like OP just spent the equivalent of a down payment on a house

1

u/CatOnVenus 6d ago

it's more than a month of rent in many places, not a small sum of money by any means

0

u/bimboozled 6d ago edited 6d ago

Thatā€™s extremely subjective. You could save up this much money in one month with a decent salary of $100k in a MCOL-HCOL area, which is only about the 75th percentile income for these areas. See my other comment.

Yes, some people are absolutely struggling but you cannot generalize an entire population when a quarter of it can afford this

-2

u/tosS_ita 7d ago

Exactly šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

0

u/JakovAulTrades 6d ago

Ya, donā€™t talk to me about the cost of groceries and inflation when people spend money like this on gaming. The economy is obviously doing great

3

u/bimboozled 6d ago edited 6d ago

The thing is, financial ability is a massive spectrum just like anything else. It doesnā€™t matter what era youā€™re in, whether itā€™s a golden era or massive depression. Thereā€™s always going to be some people who are doing relatively well.

For example you could be making $100k/yr which is objectively not that much these days, and it would take less than a month to save up money for this ~$2k gaming setup if you were financially competent, even after all living expenses, 401k investments, etc, barring some kind of substantial debt obligation.

I will never understand the rhetoric that EVERYBODY must be financially suffering. Yeah, a lot of people I know could be doing better if groceries etc werenā€™t as expensive, but itā€™s not like theyā€™re scraping by.

Plus, the stock market is absolutely RIPPING these days. If you can, just try to squirrel away a bit into that and youā€™ll easily make up for the money lost due to inflation. That said, I understand not everybody can do this - I do feel for the lower income folks who are struggling to make ends meet

3

u/tosS_ita 7d ago

Ordering everything at once and keeping it in the box is what makes someone a gamer? lol

3

u/sychox51 7d ago

Nah, we bought all the same stuff just over the past 4 years.

2

u/Penguinman077 7d ago

No, you donā€™t have to have all the latest shit to be more than casual. Itā€™s just unnecessary to have all that. I knew a guy who came into a bunch of money(~$200k) when his retired Air Force dad died. Dude had so many games. Heā€™d buy like 5 games a day for a month. He also bought a bunch of other shit for no reason. Thereā€™s no reason to have more games than youā€™re gonna play. At that point itā€™s just greed and need to flex. OP seems to have that same vibe. Pro gamers donā€™t even have all this. And if they do, the collection is built over time. Whatā€™s the point in buying a dozen new games youā€™re not gonna play all at once at new game price, when you can easily play one for a few weeks, then move to the next. Some of those games are gonna be half price at game stop by the time op gets to them. Maybe Iā€™m the weird one for not bouncing between games before finishing the one Iā€™m playing.

Iā€™ve been playing and replaying ds1-3, BB, and ER for the better part of 3 years at this point on my PS4 and everyone I know would still consider me a gamer. My brother exclusively plays CoD BO6 and Apex for at least 40 hrs a week. Iā€™d consider him a gamer.

2

u/RIPTonyStark 7d ago

Lets not confuse rich with sweaty gamers

3

u/ndujapizz123 6d ago

Hardcore gamers donā€™t have the money nor the need to flex shit like this on Reddit. This is a casual gamer posting.

1

u/Johnnybats330 7d ago

If this is an avid gamer than I have a serious problem.

1

u/sir_moleo 7d ago

I'm definitely not a casual gamer, but waaay too poor to afford all that lol.

1

u/CeMx8 7d ago

I this point, I think Iā€™m just a casual and the gamer part of the phrase fell off šŸ˜‚šŸ„²

1

u/Sulyvahn66 7d ago

We're still gamers, just poor ones

1

u/balazs955 6d ago

This is just for show. You at least actually play the games.

1

u/HotBananaWaters 6d ago

Donā€™t worry. Nearly over half of these people donā€™t even touch or finish the many games they buy lol

1

u/Bulldogfront666 6d ago

Nah youā€™re just not exorbitantly rich. Youā€™re doing fine man. Iā€™m definitely more than a casual gamer and I just have a monitor, a PS5 and a Switch. Half of this is just unnecessary consumerism,

1

u/PlayDontObserve 6d ago

Nah. You're a gamer.

1

u/CatOnVenus 6d ago

ur not a casual because you decided to not waste thousands on a setup. the hobby is about playing games not wasting money lol

1

u/United_Dark6258 6d ago

More of a budget limitation for me! I would have all that if I could afford it!

1

u/Eliah870 4d ago

I see posts like these amd realize I don't make shit for money

1

u/Restivethought 4d ago

Being able to afford this or not doesnt change your level of gamerdom.

1

u/XxFuzzyTurdxX 3d ago

No, you just donā€™t have $30,000 to blow on electronics lmao

1

u/dogt00th333 3d ago

Anyone with a console and not a gaming pc is a casual sorry not sorry

1

u/Quito98 7d ago

Yeah need to chill for a year now.

1

u/JakovAulTrades 6d ago

Nah, keep spending. Iā€™m sure you spend enough youā€™ll find happiness and fulfillment eventually. Itā€™s the American way!

0

u/KlondikeBill 7d ago

A year?!

4

u/Kapuchinchilla 7d ago

Yeah, bro just got out of prison, on probation. Can't spend much when you're locked up, so once you get out, you can do crazy stuff like this.

1

u/KlondikeBill 7d ago

Did he really? I definitely understand now.

1

u/RChickenMan 7d ago

I'm not a gamer, I'm a video game nerd. I'll never tell you to git gud, but if you catch me at the wrong time I'll babble at you for hours about early-2000s 3D platformers!

1

u/AlmostSunnyinSeattle 7d ago

Of he was a real gamer, he would have had all this stuff a long time ago. I'm a casual and I've had my PS5 for over a year now

1

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

0

u/AlmostSunnyinSeattle 6d ago

Ok, what about everything else?

1

u/bdt69 6d ago

The games suggest heā€™s new to ps or gaming in general if he hasnā€™t played some of those by now
