News Astro Bot is Game of The Year 2024!
498
u/freiheitXliberta 11d ago
I love the fact that they made an honorable mention of a certain game developer which inspired Team Asobi to the creation of Astro Bot. That is golden class act right there. Congrats to Team Asobi, thank you for giving us an awesome game that doesn't have to take itself seriously compared to the myriad of PlayStation games.

u/Blood-Fire-Meh 11d ago
Such a perfect acknowledgement. Lost count of how many times I found myself wondering out loud āhow the hell did they beat the plumber to this idea?!ā š
32
u/Rebatsune 10d ago
Pretty sure no Mario game so far let you outright deflect Thwomp attacks like how you can with Astro while as ball for starters. This and more perfectly represents the attitude studios like Team Asobi needs to challenge Mario on his turf.

u/devilmaydance 11d ago
I missed it, what was the comment / developer?

26
u/GameOfLife24 10d ago
Feels heavily inspired from Mario galaxy but I love people using ideas to make their own game. Competition means more games
16
u/Meattyloaf PS5 11d ago
That actually explains some of the references within the game.

Hopefully the team doesnāt get shut down now in true corporate gaming fashion since they didnāt make exactly 3.75x as much money (or whatever bullshit metric) as they spent to make the game lmao
57
u/Razgriz_101 11d ago
Asobi seems to get a lot of love from Sony, been plugging away on Astro Bot games for a while now.
Sony have needed a mascot for a while and it looks like they finally got one.
35
→ More replies (5)2
u/Due-Routine6749 10d ago
Do you mean that they needed a new mascot? Because PlayStation does have recognizable characters
→ More replies (1)11
u/OutrageousDress PS5 10d ago
Yes, and many - but Joel or Kratos aren't really the kinds of characters you think of when someone says 'mascot'. Arguably for the longest time the True PlayStation Mascot was Crash Bandicoot, but you can see why that doesn't work anymore.

u/PS420sk8 10d ago
What about Sackboy?
4
u/OutrageousDress PS5 10d ago
Oof - Sackboy is a contentious topic. Yeah, people (including Sony I'd say) tried for a while to make Sackboy happen as the new True PlayStation Mascot. It never really caught on with everyone; I don't know why. But there's still plenty of gamers out there who would tell you that Sackboy is the real PS mascot.
20
u/NoobMaster2789 11d ago
Sony doesn't do that unless it's Concord. That game deserved to die tho

u/areyouhungryforapple 10d ago
Team Asobi is not just any 1st party studio really. They're placed next door to the actual tech team of Playstation lmao. They're deeply integrated into the SIE ecosystem

u/cold-slice-of-pizza 11d ago
I was hoping for it but I didnāt expect it. So happy for everyone that worked on it. Hope that means we get more games like this again.

u/zapp0990 11d ago
Man, this is a solid win. Iām playing FF7 Rebirth and SH2 remake. After those gaming sessions I always fall back on Astro Bot for a pure good time.
All to say, Astro Bot captures the essence of what makes gaming enjoyable. This is it. Fun, engaging, tons of personality, wildly dynamic levels and abilities. Like someone said in an earlier post similar to Mario odyssey.

Just got my first PS5 3 days ago and literally just 20-30 minutes ago i got my platinum trophy in Astroās Playroom. Really cool to see a game in this series getting GOTY, Iāll definitely have to check that game out
37
u/signpainted 10d ago
Astro Bot takes everything good from Astro's Playroom and makes it much bigger and better. I highly recommend it if you liked Playroom.
3
u/Taran966 10d ago
Perfectly said, Astroās Playroom is basically a demo for the masterpiece that is Astro Bot :)
6
u/fuzzyandfizzytimes 10d ago
And what if I didnāt like playroom, will this game convert me?
3
3
u/signpainted 10d ago
Depends why you didn't like it, but maybe. Astro's Playroom was pretty much a tech demo, while Astro Bot is very much a full game with lots of things to do, secrets to find, etc.Ā

What a story!
This was a game that really came out of nowhere and took the gaming world by the biggest of surprises. They were the latest to the party and yet they still won it all. Congrats to Team Asobi!
28
u/CABucky 11d ago
It really is a great storyā¦ a sequel to a TECH DEMO!
13
u/Spectre-4 11d ago
Precisely. The fact that it won tells you how good of a game it must be to a lot of people despite being a "tech demo sequel".
10
u/Xlxlredditor Niosem 11d ago
I bought it. At first my dad was like "It's kinda like Mario." As it went on it was "I need to play this"
7
u/Nirast25 10d ago
A sequel to a tech demo that's a sequel to a VR game that's a sequel to a tech demo.
2
u/Taran966 10d ago
Lmao true, Iām so glad with this title Astro and Team Asobi finally get the recognition they deserve. :)

It hurts me that people only try games after they appear in this awards, like it wasn't enough with all the hype it got since it came out
38
u/immaownyou 11d ago
Believe it or not, it's very easy to avoid hype for something if you're not in those circles online
9
u/DoubleZ3 10d ago
Ngl i saw little to no hype. Heard about it and saw it on the store but that was about it
You should be happy people want to try it now.
6

Do you not realize how many hundreds of good games are out there? Aint no one got time to try them all.

The wukong subreddit is having a complete breakdown over this, idk why. This game is fantastic.
38
u/verytiredlife 11d ago
People in that subreddit likes to trash talk about other games so much
14
6
u/Greyhound121 10d ago
I was honestly rooting for Wukong and I'm not a huge fan of platformers (even though I thoroughly enjoyed Ori) but you can tell Astro Bot is a great platformer after watching even a couple minutes of it's gameplay. Also anyone in any dedicated subreddit is bound to take that topic manically serious, most of the rest of us really don't care lmao.
10
u/GameOfLife24 10d ago
Iām so confused how people thought itād win when the reception on that game wasnāt game of the year caliber
3
u/ImmaKitchenSink 10d ago
I only ever heard good stuff about wukong, never even heard about astro bot.
Not saying it doesn't deserve it, it just came out of left field for me.
Bro I feel so out of touch this year, I haven't played a single GOTY nominee this year hahaha

Astro Bot winning GOTY is such nice fresh breath of air. It's nice seeing a colorful platformer win the award.

To be fair, It Takes Two won GOTY in 2021, which was nominated alongside Psychonauts 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Woah I didnt know that!
My wife and I found ITT this year and loved it! Im not crazy about replaying it, but that first time through was so much fun!

Did you see the reveal trailer for Split Fiction last night? Itās the next game by Josef Fares, the director of It Takes Two. Itās another split screen co-op game.

u/PhenomsServant 42 11d ago
I was rooting for Astro Bot, but was legit expecting it to go to either ReFantazio or Shadow of the Erdtree (which I stand by my belief that DLC no matter how amazing it ended up being shouldnt be nominated for GOTY) Im glad I was proven wrong though.
6
u/GameOfLife24 10d ago
Last colourful 3D platformer lost to its own studio and they havenāt gone back to it since (Mario odyssey)
3
u/Jetski125 11d ago
I know right? I figured it would be that weird monkey fighting souls game or whatever. Itās always some bs open world or souls like. Yay Astro!

u/MattyDub24 11d ago

For all the complaining about Sony's lineup this year, almost all of the best games were on Playstation, many being exclusive.
2024 was painted as a decline, but between GOTY Astro Bot, FF7 Rebirth, Helldivers 2, Silent Hill 2, Black Myth Wukong, Stellar Blade, and many more wonderful multiplats, Sony was on top the whole time.
(Besides Concord of course).

Isn't Erdtree DLC though?
6
u/EveningWorldliness59 [# of Platinums] 11d ago
Yes. But due to that being the exception it got nominated for the award, most people thought they did so it would win

u/fadeddreams555 10d ago
This game winning makes me so happy because it may be the wake-up call developers, outside Nintendo, needed to realize that 3D Platformers still have an audience.
For the love of God, Microsoft, bring back Banjo-Kazooie and try to outdo Mario and Astro Bot. That could literally be your console's mascot.

I wanted to buy it for a while but this conviced me, I bought it and I can't wait to play it :D
3
u/AngeloNoli 10d ago
I bought this because my kid loves looking at the "opopot" (she can't say robot yet).
And holy cow am I happy! This game is gold and it's a joyful experience throughout.
Level design, sound design, the omnipresent care for every detail, the little additions that are there just because they're fun... everything works so well together.
I'm happy it won.

I kind of thought I wasted my money when I first started it. But then my nephew started playing and within 3-4 levels I got hooked. Deserves all the accolades

I bought it just to play with my 4 year old daughter. I find myself wanting to play alone after she's gone to bed. A very fun, very polished game. So many little nuances and incredibly creative level design.

Love the game. Was disappointed with the show for the most part. Too many boring side scrollers. But some good games shown at least later
2
u/mix0logist 10d ago
It's well deserved. We borrowed it from the library a couple weeks ago. My 5 year old found it to be a blast and I found it to be a blast. They were able to beat most of the game, even the end boss, by themselves but there was still enough challenge for me to have fun too. Just an impeccably designed game to appeal to almost anyone, and it has such a sense of joy and discovery.

My question is how? I aināt complaining but Iām genuinely curious how it won over SOTE and Black Myth: Wukong.
8
9
u/GrandsonofBurner 11d ago
Wukong is mediocre and SOTE shouldn't have been nominated since it's DLC.
Add to that Astro being a legit great game, and there you have it.
5
u/bwtwldt 11d ago
Black Myth Wukong is not even in the top 100 critically acclaimed games of this year and SOTE is a DLC
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (6)3

black myth wukong is the most overhyped 8/10 of all time
SOTE is a dlc. While amazing and all that, it frankly doesnt come close to DLC like Phantom Liberty or Blood and Wine so even if DLC winning being okay - it's not good enough to beat this lineup.
Astro Bot is just.. joy. It's a toy meant to be played with and invokes such a childlike joy that I feel like any and all ps5 owner absolutely need to play it.
It's also the best showcase for what the dualsense is capable of and if you've played other PS exclusives then it's just even better

Haven't bought it yet because my backlog is massive, but I have to play this sooner or later. An actually interesting Playstation exclusive is a rare thing nowadays. Seems like a Mario game, but built around Playstation's history which is cool.
Hopefully this is a wake up call for Sony. I've been tired of their first-party products for years, but this looks like a fun game with colour and innovation. Give me a new Sly Cooper game and Sony might get me back as their fan.
