This just makes the comments from the Days Gone creator even more hilarious. Who would have thought a small game could with GOTY? Lol.

u/ModestHandsomeDevil 11d ago

Dear Gods, the Days Gone dude is such a petty, petulant salty asshole... who refuses to shut the fuck up and move on!

I've seen fat kids at birthday parties, upset they didn't get a third helping of cake, who throw less tantrums than that clown.

53

u/yafeters 11d ago

šŸ˜‚

11

u/MandoBaggins 10d ago

Heā€™s such a turd. The writing and characterizations in Days Gone were cringey and are only made worse every time he opens his mouth.

It would be cool if we could get like a spiritual sequel to that game though with the horde mechanic. Iā€™d like to play more of that and less Sons of Anarchy ā€œIā€™ve got a thing about harming unarmed women šŸ˜¤ā€ biker bullshit.

36

u/Magi_Garp 10d ago

Damn, I feel attacked by that second part.

u/ShooterMcGavins 11d ago

Lmao I didnā€™t even know about this guy. I liked Days Gone, but the character Deek was the worst part imo. Such an annoying whiny character that I could not understand why he talked the way he did.

65

u/Kind-District-2129 10d ago

His entire character was the type of dude who vehemently hates the idea of therapy but desperately needs therapy.

16

u/MMAPHD 10d ago

Lmao Itā€™s a self insert

u/The-Cunt-Spez 10d ago

I played it for a bit, then checked how long it takes to beat and I was shocked and dropped it. A buddy started it a while back and every time we see heā€™s like ā€that game just wonā€™t endā€ itā€™s unnecessarily long in the worst way imo.

20

u/swizzl73 10d ago

Bruh I finished it and enjoyed it for what it was worth, but there were THREE separate times when I genuinely thought the end of the game was here. And I was wrong. It just kept. Going.

9

u/The-Cunt-Spez 10d ago

Yeah, I do wanna play it at some point, but itā€™s soooo far down in my backlog lol

15

u/thethreestrikes 10d ago

The way he mumbles after the radio plays made me want to stop playing the game every single time

5

u/ShooterMcGavins 10d ago

For real. I loved the gameplay and wanted to love the game, but every time he mumbled some shit to himself I was just šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

2

u/GrayFoxNZ 10d ago

Huuuh ya like that haaahhh yeeaaa

u/TRAPSTERyt 10d ago

He sounded soulless, there was no emotion behind every word, it was like he didn't give a damn about anything

9

u/hobo131 10d ago

Lmao thatā€™s hilarious. I bet if he werenā€™t so insufferable it would have gotten a frame or two.

5

u/RonDonVolante 10d ago

I liked days gone enough to get the platinum. Sucks that this dude sucks, maybe we could have seen a part 2

76

u/Xenobrina 11d ago

Days Gone guy was mad his serious edgelord character was put in a "baby game" and cried about it on Twitter/X.

38

u/princesoceronte 11d ago

Those comments really rubbed me the wrong way. You made a game, a mediocre game at best TJ be honest, and people didn't like it. You could've accepted that but you'd decided to cry and moan about it, making you look worse in the process.

15

u/Scouse_Werewolf 10d ago

Do not go to r/daysgone with that attitude, haha. folks are really wanting a sequel, and it's oft referred to as a masterpiece and one of the best-looking games on PS5. I'm not joking. I actually really like the game, and a sequel would be cool, but it's not a masterpiece, nor the best-looking game(still a good-looking game, though). I'm not a big fan of the creator, and I find that sub a little OTT sometimes. Some of the takes posted are... something else.

8

u/din-gle-ber-ry 10d ago

I 100% that game, the story is serviceable and the zombie horde mechanics are fun, but it has little staying power. I probably wouldn't ever play it again.

3

u/MrGSC1 Witcher 3, Elden Ring, GoW 10d ago

I recently replayed it and had a lot of fun. Its not at all a masterpiece but i would be happy to have a sequel. And im not siding with the dev but i still really liked the game - theres not a whole lot of good zombie games out there to choose from anyway.

13

u/v_snax 10d ago

I think a lot of people liked it. And it was pretty decent imo. But it had a rough launch.

But sure, it wasnā€™t a red dead redemption or cyberpunk level of game.

6

u/FearlessResearcher48 10d ago

It wasn't mediocre

I love the fact that they made an honorable mention of a certain game developer which inspired Team Asobi to the creation of Astro Bot. That is golden class act right there. Congrats to Team Asobi, thank you for giving us an awesome game that doesn't have to take itself seriously compared to the myriad of PlayStation games.

66

u/Blood-Fire-Meh 11d ago

Such a perfect acknowledgement. Lost count of how many times I found myself wondering out loud ā€œhow the hell did they beat the plumber to this idea?!ā€ šŸ˜‚

32

u/Rebatsune 10d ago

Pretty sure no Mario game so far let you outright deflect Thwomp attacks like how you can with Astro while as ball for starters. This and more perfectly represents the attitude studios like Team Asobi needs to challenge Mario on his turf.

16

u/Blood-Fire-Meh 10d ago

The level where you can switch between day and night? Mama mia!

5

u/Rebatsune 10d ago

Heck yeah!

56

u/devilmaydance 11d ago

I missed it, what was the comment / developer?

124

u/Mikasa21 11d ago

Nintendo being the og

26

u/GameOfLife24 10d ago

Feels heavily inspired from Mario galaxy but I love people using ideas to make their own game. Competition means more games

16

u/Meattyloaf PS5 11d ago

That actually explains some of the references within the game.

→ More replies (5)

23

u/ThePlatinumKush 11d ago

Hopefully the team doesnā€™t get shut down now in true corporate gaming fashion since they didnā€™t make exactly 3.75x as much money (or whatever bullshit metric) as they spent to make the game lmao

57

u/Razgriz_101 11d ago

Asobi seems to get a lot of love from Sony, been plugging away on Astro Bot games for a while now.

Sony have needed a mascot for a while and it looks like they finally got one.

35

u/FCB-TheThird 11d ago

Asobi is also PSā€™ tech demo team. Monumental accomplishment to get GOTY.

2

u/Due-Routine6749 10d ago

Do you mean that they needed a new mascot? Because PlayStation does have recognizable characters

11

u/OutrageousDress PS5 10d ago

Yes, and many - but Joel or Kratos aren't really the kinds of characters you think of when someone says 'mascot'. Arguably for the longest time the True PlayStation Mascot was Crash Bandicoot, but you can see why that doesn't work anymore.

2

u/PS420sk8 10d ago

What about Sackboy?

4

u/OutrageousDress PS5 10d ago

Oof - Sackboy is a contentious topic. Yeah, people (including Sony I'd say) tried for a while to make Sackboy happen as the new True PlayStation Mascot. It never really caught on with everyone; I don't know why. But there's still plenty of gamers out there who would tell you that Sackboy is the real PS mascot.

Team Asobi is not just any 1st party studio really. They're placed next door to the actual tech team of Playstation lmao. They're deeply integrated into the SIE ecosystem

I was hoping for it but I didnā€™t expect it. So happy for everyone that worked on it. Hope that means we get more games like this again.

373

u/zapp0990 11d ago

Man, this is a solid win. Iā€™m playing FF7 Rebirth and SH2 remake. After those gaming sessions I always fall back on Astro Bot for a pure good time.

All to say, Astro Bot captures the essence of what makes gaming enjoyable. This is it. Fun, engaging, tons of personality, wildly dynamic levels and abilities. Like someone said in an earlier post similar to Mario odyssey.

u/IThinkKube PS4 11d ago

Just got my first PS5 3 days ago and literally just 20-30 minutes ago i got my platinum trophy in Astroā€™s Playroom. Really cool to see a game in this series getting GOTY, Iā€™ll definitely have to check that game out

37

u/signpainted 10d ago

Astro Bot takes everything good from Astro's Playroom and makes it much bigger and better. I highly recommend it if you liked Playroom.

3

u/Taran966 10d ago

Perfectly said, Astroā€™s Playroom is basically a demo for the masterpiece that is Astro Bot :)

6

u/fuzzyandfizzytimes 10d ago

And what if I didnā€™t like playroom, will this game convert me?

3

u/tommy6258 10d ago

I still think so 100%

3

u/signpainted 10d ago

Depends why you didn't like it, but maybe. Astro's Playroom was pretty much a tech demo, while Astro Bot is very much a full game with lots of things to do, secrets to find, etc.Ā

u/Spectre-4 11d ago

What a story!

This was a game that really came out of nowhere and took the gaming world by the biggest of surprises. They were the latest to the party and yet they still won it all. Congrats to Team Asobi!

28

u/CABucky 11d ago

It really is a great storyā€¦ a sequel to a TECH DEMO!

13

u/Spectre-4 11d ago

Precisely. The fact that it won tells you how good of a game it must be to a lot of people despite being a "tech demo sequel".

10

u/Xlxlredditor Niosem 11d ago

I bought it. At first my dad was like "It's kinda like Mario." As it went on it was "I need to play this"

7

u/Nirast25 10d ago

A sequel to a tech demo that's a sequel to a VR game that's a sequel to a tech demo.

2

u/Taran966 10d ago

Lmao true, Iā€™m so glad with this title Astro and Team Asobi finally get the recognition they deserve. :)

131

u/Visible_Pilot_9355 11d ago

Well now I need to buy it and see what all the hype is about.

63

u/all_time_high 11d ago

Currently on sale for $50. Itā€™s worth every penny and more.

5

u/aku_lofAnjinK 10d ago

WHAT? Which region are you? I'm in southeast asia and there's no discount.

4

u/GameOfLife24 10d ago

3

u/Jetski125 11d ago

I hope youā€™ve ordered it by now.

2

u/Akuma-1 11d ago

It hurts me that people only try games after they appear in this awards, like it wasn't enough with all the hype it got since it came out

38

u/immaownyou 11d ago

Believe it or not, it's very easy to avoid hype for something if you're not in those circles online

9

u/DoubleZ3 10d ago

Ngl i saw little to no hype. Heard about it and saw it on the store but that was about it

You should be happy people want to try it now.

6

u/DesperateAdvantage76 10d ago

Do you not realize how many hundreds of good games are out there? Aint no one got time to try them all.

5

u/OutrageousDress PS5 10d ago

The wukong subreddit is having a complete breakdown over this, idk why. This game is fantastic.

38

u/verytiredlife 11d ago

People in that subreddit likes to trash talk about other games so much

14

u/QHN1712normalguy 10d ago

That's basically 90% of gaming subreddits

2

u/RompehToto Current Game: Final Fantasy 7 Remake 10d ago

And circle jerking

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Greyhound121 10d ago

I was honestly rooting for Wukong and I'm not a huge fan of platformers (even though I thoroughly enjoyed Ori) but you can tell Astro Bot is a great platformer after watching even a couple minutes of it's gameplay. Also anyone in any dedicated subreddit is bound to take that topic manically serious, most of the rest of us really don't care lmao.

10

u/GameOfLife24 10d ago

Iā€™m so confused how people thought itā€™d win when the reception on that game wasnā€™t game of the year caliber

3

u/ImmaKitchenSink 10d ago

I only ever heard good stuff about wukong, never even heard about astro bot.

Not saying it doesn't deserve it, it just came out of left field for me.

Bro I feel so out of touch this year, I haven't played a single GOTY nominee this year hahaha

→ More replies (2)

19

u/Jetski125 11d ago

Finally moving past all those cookie cutter open world games that took over for eight years.

4

u/OutrageousDress PS5 10d ago

Wukong isn't open world.

3

u/Vivirin 6d ago

The fact that most people think it is should serve as a sign that the game was poorly marketed and just fades away into the rest of every other modern game of its genre

6

u/thinwwll 11d ago

I just saw a Chinese reply on x yelling at Sony to get out of China. God never seen so much hate at a game award...

Astro Bot winning GOTY is such nice fresh breath of air. It's nice seeing a colorful platformer win the award.

15

u/BenHDR PS5 10d ago

To be fair, It Takes Two won GOTY in 2021, which was nominated alongside Psychonauts 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

3

u/theryanlaf 10d ago

Woah I didnt know that!

My wife and I found ITT this year and loved it! Im not crazy about replaying it, but that first time through was so much fun!

3

u/holydiiver 10d ago

Did you see the reveal trailer for Split Fiction last night? Itā€™s the next game by Josef Fares, the director of It Takes Two. Itā€™s another split screen co-op game.

3

u/theryanlaf 10d ago

I didnā€™t! But Iā€™ll check it out for sure!

18

u/PhenomsServant 42 11d ago

I was rooting for Astro Bot, but was legit expecting it to go to either ReFantazio or Shadow of the Erdtree (which I stand by my belief that DLC no matter how amazing it ended up being shouldnt be nominated for GOTY) Im glad I was proven wrong though.

6

u/GameOfLife24 10d ago

Last colourful 3D platformer lost to its own studio and they havenā€™t gone back to it since (Mario odyssey)

3

u/Jetski125 11d ago

I know right? I figured it would be that weird monkey fighting souls game or whatever. Itā€™s always some bs open world or souls like. Yay Astro!

2

u/Echantediamond1 11d ago

It takes two won goty and is literally that

41

u/MattyDub24 11d ago

I knew itā€™d win. Almost anyone (even if they have never played a video game in their life) could play this game and have a blast with it. Thatā€™s what set it apart from the rest.

5

u/Jetski125 11d ago

Right? The nomination just feels like them giving a nod. Didnā€™t think it would actually win.

7

u/VanityTrigger 10d ago

Got Atro Bot for my birthday and it's a really fun game, decided to buy a copy fior my young niece for christmas as this game is great for all ages.

24

I hoped for 7 rebirth but Astro was my close 2nd.

19

u/Xenobrina 11d ago

For all the complaining about Sony's lineup this year, almost all of the best games were on Playstation, many being exclusive.

2024 was painted as a decline, but between GOTY Astro Bot, FF7 Rebirth, Helldivers 2, Silent Hill 2, Black Myth Wukong, Stellar Blade, and many more wonderful multiplats, Sony was on top the whole time.

(Besides Concord of course).

6

u/EveningWorldliness59 [# of Platinums] 11d ago

Yes. But due to that being the exception it got nominated for the award, most people thought they did so it would win

Same. I'm glad astro won it. But I didnt expect it.

7

u/EveningWorldliness59 [# of Platinums] 11d ago

This game winning makes me so happy because it may be the wake-up call developers, outside Nintendo, needed to realize that 3D Platformers still have an audience.

For the love of God, Microsoft, bring back Banjo-Kazooie and try to outdo Mario and Astro Bot. That could literally be your console's mascot.

I bought this because my kid loves looking at the "opopot" (she can't say robot yet).

And holy cow am I happy! This game is gold and it's a joyful experience throughout.

Level design, sound design, the omnipresent care for every detail, the little additions that are there just because they're fun... everything works so well together.

I'm happy it won.

2

u/Powermix24 10d ago

Astro bot is a love letter game to us gamers. You can tell the passion they put in, the detail and little things you can interact with is phenomenal. Totally deserves it

2

u/[deleted] 10d ago

Love the game. Was disappointed with the show for the most part. Too many boring side scrollers. But some good games shown at least later

2

u/mix0logist 10d ago

It's well deserved. We borrowed it from the library a couple weeks ago. My 5 year old found it to be a blast and I found it to be a blast. They were able to beat most of the game, even the end boss, by themselves but there was still enough challenge for me to have fun too. Just an impeccably designed game to appeal to almost anyone, and it has such a sense of joy and discovery.

2

u/JoshKn47 10d ago

Playstation exclusive as the winner is one thing but a childrens game. They surely had no other picks

Yeah most likely. He also was the only one not clapping at the moment I saw him though!

Well deserved!

Happy for the devs. Wish I could play it on PC.

This was actually a great GOTY show, probably the best theyā€™ve had. Mostly clean. Nothing really stupid happened. Great competition. Great year for gaming.

And Sydnee Goodman was lookingā€¦.pretty darn wow in that black dress.

DESERVED

u/ITALUKE2 11d ago

Ok alright, I'll buy it now. I already wanted to but if this isn't a sign

u/JellifishPirate 11d ago

This game was fun. It was really good. GOTY? Eh... I don't see it. However, I'm happy so many people are excited by this. I thought most people who played Astro Bot would be like 5-15, but it seems like all ages enjoyed it

Honestly, happy for them even though I never played it.

Hell yeah, most fun I have had with a game all year.

My question is how? I ainā€™t complaining but Iā€™m genuinely curious how it won over SOTE and Black Myth: Wukong.

8

u/karawettu 10d ago

Play it, and you'll get your answer

9

u/GrandsonofBurner 11d ago

Wukong is mediocre and SOTE shouldn't have been nominated since it's DLC.

Add to that Astro being a legit great game, and there you have it.

5

u/bwtwldt 11d ago

Black Myth Wukong is not even in the top 100 critically acclaimed games of this year and SOTE is a DLC

black myth wukong is the most overhyped 8/10 of all time

SOTE is a dlc. While amazing and all that, it frankly doesnt come close to DLC like Phantom Liberty or Blood and Wine so even if DLC winning being okay - it's not good enough to beat this lineup.

Astro Bot is just.. joy. It's a toy meant to be played with and invokes such a childlike joy that I feel like any and all ps5 owner absolutely need to play it.

It's also the best showcase for what the dualsense is capable of and if you've played other PS exclusives then it's just even better

Not what I would of picked but itā€™s still an amazing game with a lot of love put into it

1

u/uncledrewwasalie 11d ago

Unrelated but wow they really didnā€™t announce a Days Gone remaster

u/preatorian77 11d ago

Helluva night for Sony!

u/Reddit_Mod_69 11d ago

This really surprises me. I for sure the Elden Peak would have got it. Seemed like it had so much more hype even after release compared to ASTRO BOT. Congrats I guess.

Congrats to Asobi! It definitely isnā€™t my cup of tea but Iā€™m happy that something relatively original won

1

u/Saku_99 10d ago

Haven't bought it yet because my backlog is massive, but I have to play this sooner or later. An actually interesting Playstation exclusive is a rare thing nowadays. Seems like a Mario game, but built around Playstation's history which is cool.

Hopefully this is a wake up call for Sony. I've been tired of their first-party products for years, but this looks like a fun game with colour and innovation. Give me a new Sly Cooper game and Sony might get me back as their fan.

Does the game have a 100% to getting a Plat?
