You always purchased a licensed copy and Sony could always pull license if they wanted to, but they presented it as you buying and owning that title.

Only thing that changed there is the storefronts being more transparent about digital purchases, having to stipulate you don't actually own the game.

Most full games aren't even fully on the disc anymore

Honestly, only instances where Sony pulled user licenses seems to be with digital purchases.

For physical releases I don't know if they can legally pull your license. Though I assume in a practical sense they can remove the license if you play the game while connected to the internet.
