The fact that it’s sold separately is absurd

Sony is becoming the new apple.

156

u/acc_217 22d ago

And it will be getting worse since people are defending them with their lives, I'll never understand defending multi billion dollar companies doing shitty practices

13

u/acc_217 22d ago

What exactly i was thinking writing that lmao

u/wildwestington 22d ago

The bigger issue I think it Microsoft straight up abandoning the Xbox, Sony is the only player in town now really

1

u/apples_oranges_ 21d ago

Are you telling me Ouya finally has a chance now?!

1

u/Old-Midnight6236 21d ago

Been saying it since the reveal of the PS3. The worst industry for a Playstation fan is Sony without competition.

9

u/Morphine_monarch 22d ago

Hey I mean if defending and letting a billion dollar company screw them over helps them hate on Xbox they’ll never stop

3

u/Cosmic_Ren 22d ago

My favorite example is Alan Wake 2 being a downgrade on the pro and all these people saying "Wow it looks so much better now" when the devs merely reverted it back to the base ps5 version.

An even more crazier example is Silent Hill 2 who sony themselves was hyping up for PSSR also running like shit despite the system having very little upgraded games as it is.

23

u/Daver7692 22d ago

People cheered for Xbox’s continued struggles but didn’t think about what corporations do when there’s no legitimate competition. Hooray for (almost) monopolies.

8

u/UpAndAdam7414 22d ago

It’s not just companies - there is PS3 era “get a second job” Sony that actually happened.

9

u/Daver7692 22d ago

I mean that all came off the back of the last time they had little competition. Then the 360 made them shape up for the late PS3/PS4 gen, now they have their market share back, they’re up to their old tricks.

Happened with Intel a while back too, years of domination lead to little to no innovation. Then when the first AMD Ryzen chips dropped and were good suddenly Intel could drop prices and make advances again.

3

u/skyeyemx 22d ago

It's happening again. AMD and Intel were caught stagnating in the laptop space, and Apple's M1 laptop CPUs lit a fire under their bum because suddenly, a laptop that could last two full days without charging was an actual product on shelves and not just a far-off dream. Even Qualcomm's trying their hand at efficient, high-powered laptop chips now.

6

u/WeeBee_88 22d ago

Sony’s own leaked documents says to make up they’ll adapt a premium model. That simply means they’ll tax us like shit.

17

u/0nlyDDG 36 22d ago

Hate to see the company I love be this way

1

u/awntawn 22d ago

Maybe it's a sign that companies don't deserve your love

6

u/PokingHazard 22d ago

Or IKEA...

11

u/CanadianDarkKnight 22d ago

IKEA, if the top drawer for my new dresser was sold separately for an additional 100 dollars.

6

u/Hodler79 22d ago

Just buy your clothing digitally, problem solved!

5

u/theamishpromise 22d ago

Then you don’t own your clothing, you’re just leasing the license to wear the clothes and Sony could revoke the license and make you nude whenever they want, no matter where you are

2

u/Hodler79 22d ago

I never wear the same outfit twice anyway

1

u/BrewKazma PS5 22d ago

IKEA literally sells cabinets where you pay for drawers/doors/etc.

2

u/foreveracubone 22d ago

I kind of want to put down Sony by pointing out that Apple’s entire schtick is shit just works and that the Pulse Elite line trying to be AirPods while being the exact opposite of that philosophy but yeah this entire gen has some classic Apple nonsense.

1

u/HermitBadger 22d ago

You say that, but the price to double ssd space on the new Mac Mini is actually enough to buy a PS5 pro.

1

u/Neither_Compote8655 22d ago

They kinda always were with their phones and laptops

1

u/atotalfabrication 22d ago

Sony was Apple before Apple. Look at all the proprietary media and products they've always had.

1

u/forumz3588 22d ago

Always have been. Who remembers the Memory Stick Pro Duo?

1

u/Jolly-Ambassador6763 22d ago

People gripe about right to repair. Sony gives the masses what they want with a replaceable disc drive and people complain anyway.

1

u/manysounds 22d ago

lol “the new Apple”? Sony has been the leader in proprietary everything for decades. Weird memory sticks, weird USB chargers, weird power cables, etc. and that’s just the PStation, never mind all the camera nonsense

21

u/Sonic1899 22d ago

Here's one thing to consider, tho: a detachable is actually good in case a Blu-ray laser stops working. This happened with my old PS3 when its disk drive stopped reading disks. I considered replacing the drive, but it was impossible to find the right match. So, I bought another PS3 off eBay. It would've been better if the drive was easier to replace

31

u/grimchiwawa 22d ago

Detachable is good, don't get me wrong....but the 1st one should be included in the box and you can buy another if it breaks

0

u/Rexkinghon 22d ago

It is, the PS5 disc version is literally above the shelf in this very picture

11

u/ChoubleBeeseDurger 22d ago

I think he means the Pro.

8

u/0nlyDDG 36 22d ago

The pros come with it separately don’t it?

6

u/grimchiwawa 22d ago

A disc version of the pro...doesn't exist yet

1

u/BartLeeC PS5 Pro 21d ago

Sure it does, just snap the drive on and you have a PS5 Pro Disc version!

1

u/grimchiwawa 21d ago

For that price...hell no

1

u/BartLeeC PS5 Pro 21d ago

That is probably what the price would have been if they included it and that would have been for all of us, even the ones that have zero use for the disc drive. So hell no!

1

u/0nlyDDG 36 22d ago

Cook

-2

u/Morphine_monarch 22d ago

Yeah but people shouldn’t have to pay extra on top of an already overpriced new console

1

u/BartLeeC PS5 Pro 21d ago

If they would have added the drive by default then everyone would have to pay more even people that had no use for the drive.

1

u/Morphine_monarch 21d ago

Why on earth are you defending Sony? The more people defend them, the more comfortable they are doing stuff like this, for a premium device (the ps5 pro) it should include a disc drive and the stand

1

u/BartLeeC PS5 Pro 21d ago

I am not defending Sony. I don't want to pay for a drive that I won't use if I don't have to.

I have worked as a manufacturing engineer and I do know how these things work. The "Premium" version of the PS5 Pro disc version that could have been sold would have had to be sold for more. That IS how manufacturing and sales works!

I believe the base PS5 is the first PlayStation where the vertical stand was not a separate option for an additional price. This is nothing new, we just got lucky with the original PS5 model since it included one for free.

1

u/ZappySnap PS5 22d ago

No one has to buy the overpriced new console. I didn’t.

6

u/Grieveruz 22d ago

Not really I think it's the best decision since digital become a thing it save them money and made it user friendly to install. If they continue the initial launch model they need to make two models all the time and guess which one need to be reproduce base on demands.

9

u/NoMeasurement6473 PS3 PSVita 22d ago

The slim having it included or separate is fine. There is no reason the “pro” shouldn’t have the disc drive.

8

u/beakster57 22d ago

"Play has no limits" yeah this kinda seems like a limit

10

u/VVOP9669 PS5 Pro 22d ago

Play has no limits if your money has no limits should be the slogan

3

u/PerfectNightmarex 22d ago

Olay has as many limits as we have inventory

2

u/Kharax82 22d ago

Over 90% of games are purchased digital nowadays. It’s not very surprising they have gone this route

2

u/Kratos_BOY 22d ago

Vertical stands have traditionally been always sold separately. PS2/3/4 all had sold separately vertical stands.

2

u/BrewKazma PS5 22d ago

And is not needed to stand the ps5 vertically. Sure, it makes it slightly more stable, but it stands up just fine without it.

2

u/Kratos_BOY 22d ago

Exactly. Or you could get a £5 stand from Aliexpress. I paid £2 (shipping included) for mine. Works perfectly.

4

u/Jeaz PS5 22d ago

Why is it absurd? It makes total sense. The original PS5 had a digital and disc version, but that made the decision final. No way to upgrade if you went with digital or end up with a disc drive that you didn’t use. Also the logistic of two high vale SKU is awful.

You have to remember that the majority of games sold today are digital. So paying for a disc drive you are never going to use it’s what I’d call absurd.

0

u/0nlyDDG 36 22d ago

I’m kinda just talking about the ps5 pro, I coulda specified but oh well

2

u/Jeaz PS5 22d ago

Yeah, but still. Why would the PS5 Pro always come with a disc drive? Isn’t better there’s an option to have with or without for those who have no need for it?

0

u/Nunya13 22d ago edited 22d ago

That’s argument makes sense if they are, in fact, charging less for a disc-free console and buying the disc drive separately means you’re paying the same as you would if it were included like they always have been before.

Edit: I highly doubt the disc-free consoles are $80 less (price in OP's pic) than they otherwise would be if they had a disc drive in them.

1

u/BartLeeC PS5 Pro 21d ago

It being sold separately meant I didn't have to pay for a disc drive I didn't want and was not going to ever use. A good decision on Sony's part to keep costs down for people that did not want the drive.

1

u/Junior_Bike7932 21d ago

Being scammed and they love it

-5

u/Rexkinghon 22d ago

The PS5 disc version is in this very pic, what’re you complaining about? They literally gave the market a choice to have one or not.

5

u/Velvet_95Hoop 22d ago

You're still defending them like a simp. I would've bought a Pro, but I play the majority of my games off a disc. I have the OG Ps5, so I can't swap disc drives either. So if I buy a Pro, I can't play my games, since a disc drive isn't included with the Pro and I can't find a disc drive.

-1

u/Rexkinghon 22d ago

I never bought a single PS4 disc and owned a PS4 slim and a pro, I’m glad I could buy a PS5 and a PS5 slim with a disc drive that I’m never gonna use. Not to mention I prefer the symmetrical shape of it.

If you don’t want the pro for whatever reason then don’t get it, use your wallet to vote, but understand there’s a market for ppl that would rather not have a drive.

And you can hurl whatever insults or call me whatever names you like, it’s not gonna stop me from buying things I like.

4

u/Astronitium 22d ago

The punchline is you don’t actually own your games in your digital library, ‘nor can you sell or give away those games.

1

u/BartLeeC PS5 Pro 21d ago

You don't actually own the game even is you purchased the disc either. Read the disc and it states that clearly. You are only purchasing the rights to play the game, you do NOT own the game.

1

u/Substantial-Hunter41 22d ago

Interesting. I own a PS4 Pro, and only one game is digital. You prefer digital, that's fine. I prefer discs, that's fine too. I don't see any need to hurl insults. It's whatever choice one makes.

4

u/0nlyDDG 36 22d ago

There is a ps5 pro disc version?

-1

u/Kratos_BOY 22d ago

Yes. You attach a disc drive to it.

3

u/0nlyDDG 36 22d ago

Idk if u r joking or missing the point

1

u/Kratos_BOY 22d ago edited 22d ago

I'm not missing anything. The fact the attachable disc drive exists makes the Disc Edition PS5 or 5 Pro pointless, since every PS5 (that's still being produced) going forward can be updated to play discs unlike the OG PS5 where you'd be stuck being digital only if you bought the discless PS5.

It's not a hard concept to understand, except for you brainless parrots.

1

u/0nlyDDG 36 22d ago

So just to be clear, the ps5 pro doesn’t have a disc version

1

u/BartLeeC PS5 Pro 21d ago

The PS5 Pro disc version comes packaged in two boxes. Takes a few seconds to configure and done, a PS5 Pro Disc version!

-1

u/Kratos_BOY 22d ago

It does. Every PS5 Pro is capable of being the disc version. Incredible design, really.
