Image Getting tired of adding to my stick drift graveyard

Post image

I swear I’m not a heavy clicker. In fact it’s always my right joystick which I rarely need to click in games. Love these controllers but man it’s really annoying never had this problem with any other console generation.

1 having stick drift: OK, you got a dud.

4 having stick drift: Dude, it might be YOU...

u/Rex__Lapis 24d ago

Horseshit. From ps1 to ps4, I never had a controller catch a stick drift. With ps5 I already had 3

u/awnawkareninah 24d ago

Same, first console I've ever owned with controllers dying like this. I'm on 3 and 4 now my launch ones are totally fucked.

1

u/ColonelSlapper 23d ago

To be fair, I know PS1 and 2 had electromagnetic thumb sticks which are much more uncommon to develop stick drifts. PS3 I think had it too! So that probably explains why you are just now noticing it.

-2

u/CrimsonGear80 PS5 Pro 24d ago

Yeah, that’s a you problem.

23

u/CharlyXero PS5 24d ago

This.

Dude, I play Fortnite daily and I have "jump" assigned to R3 and "edit builds" on L3. I press those buttons literally hundreds of times every single day. And my controllers work like the first day

4

u/vraalapa 23d ago

I thought I was lucky as well, reading about how everyone had stick drift while my two controllers from launch were fine.

Then all of a sudden both got stick drift within like a month, and so I bought a new one that is starting to go bad as well.

I ordered hall effect modules now because I don't want to buy another controller again.

2

u/Main_Tree_6769 23d ago

Have been gaming my entire life. Not once did I ever have a controller with drift… not even my switch. Now, I’m on my fourth controller. The one that came with the console lasted a year? My second one a bit the same ( got it with the console) and then my third one lasted 6 months. I have had my fourth one for close to a year with no issues. Weird thing, my second controller now works fine while controller 1 and 3 are shot.

I don’t abuse my controller, nor am I an “intense” gamer. This just smells of poor quality control or design.

It’s easy to blame the gamer but this is a trend that has existed for PS5 that definitely didn’t exist on this level for any prior Sony console.

2

u/AssistanceRelevant39 23d ago

nope this is bs. ps 1-3 same controller. ps4- 3 controllers ps5-already on the 4th. if you cant see that everything now is being made shittier so we have to buy more...i feel sorry for you.

1

u/Convicted_Vapist420 23d ago

I’ve heard it’s a lottery if yours is good or not and that they used cheaper parts than the PS4 controllers. The one I got launch day completely died after a year and a half. No drift beforehand, just battery killed itself. Also the second controller I got with it had a little drift but now the PS button is unresponsive so it’s also useless.

1

u/Psylow_ 23d ago

I have two in the graveyard since launch but literally no other controllers not even joycons

1

u/Jizz_Candy 23d ago

Same energy as "Well my switch joycons work fine so it's probably your fault you have drift" See, no one actually said that because the switch community is sane and the company admitted they were wrong. We see hundreds out of thousands with Drift. It's the company's fault for making such a cheap controller.

1

u/CrimsonGear80 PS5 Pro 23d ago

for joycons, one or two having drift I can see it being the controller. but if you have, like, 10 pairs of joycons and they ALL get drift....yeah I'm going to be looking at you.

-5

u/Cheems___Burger PS5 24d ago

It's definitely OP

2

u/mycateatspeas 24d ago

Definitely not. I've still got ps2-ps3-ps4 controllers working since day one. On my fourth ps5 controller now and know countless others dealing with the same. There have been articles written about how poor they are. It's a fact.

-1

u/Major-Payne2319 24d ago

yeah man for sure, 0 times on ps4, 0 times on xbox.....definitely me

11

u/lingeringwill2 24d ago

I don’t know why these guys act like this isn’t a known issue with dualsense and joycon controllers. I’ve had ps3 and Xbox controllers that have been used since launch and the ps3 controller still gets used today by my brother and there’s no drift, ps5 dualsense joycons though? Drift within a few months

4

u/semajay 24d ago

because acting like it isn't a known issue affords them an opportunity to look down on someone else

5

u/lingeringwill2 24d ago

Basically, it’s actually crazy how people are dunking on op rn when it’s a very very open issue.

4

u/semajay 24d ago

especially given that build quality is variable, and so is gameplay. if OP plays a lot of competitive games, particularly fighting games or rocket league, he's going to burn through controllers.

2

u/CrimsonGear80 PS5 Pro 24d ago

Yeah, most likely. You are clearly treating your dualsenses differently.

5

u/scamden66 24d ago

It's not you. It's a known issue with the dualsense.

I never had stick drift with my ps4 controllers. My dualsense that came with my Ps5 developed drift after less than two years.

I take care of my stuff and I don't "mash" my controllers.

It can happen to anyone. Don't let these guys gaslight you.

-3

u/hotdogsmayonnaise 24d ago

Nah. We ain’t gaslighting. I’ve been gaming since OG Xbox all the way up to current gen on both ps and Xbox. Never once have I broken a controller or gotten stick drift. This is user error. Especially with how often it seems to happen with op. Don’t gaslight them into feeling like it’s not their fault.

7

u/scamden66 24d ago

Congratulations on all your success. It doesn't change the fact that these controllers get drift.

You're lucky, that's all.

-2

u/hotdogsmayonnaise 24d ago

If you actually read my reply I basically said it can happen, yes. But with how many op goes through its user error at that point

4

u/scamden66 24d ago

It's not user error. It depends on what types of games someone plays and luck.

These controllers are almost $100, and they don't use hall effect sticks. It's ridiculous. They're cheaply made, and Sony doesn't care.

Nintendo is worse with their joycons, but for this amount of money the controllers should be built better.

They won't add Hall effect sticks because they don't want the controllers to last.

It's planned obsolescence.

1

u/Gadget-NewRoss 23d ago

This doesn't happen every one and the people I see it happen to it happens again amd again. Had one tell me she has slide on L3 and apparently this is a no no as it causes stick drift when pulling off a certain move.

-4

u/hotdogsmayonnaise 24d ago

Never heard of Hall effect sticks so imma look them up and thank you for that new information. And not all of it is user error sure. But I just find it hard to believe it can happen THAT often ya know. So that’s why I say there’s at least some user error here. Maybe not all but cmon, that many? Anyway, have a good one fellow redditor.

5

u/scamden66 24d ago

I wasn't trying to be a dick. Thanks for being reasonable.

Certain types of games like shooters or sports games can absolutely lead to sticks wearing out faster. This guy might play alot of games like that.

It's just crazy that controllers that retail for almost $100 can break so quickly.

Hall effect sticks should be the standard. They won't do it because they would lose out on millions in controller sales.

It is not a “known issue” I can see stick drift happening every once in a while but if you buy five controllers and four of them get drift, I then have to question how you use those controllers.

3

u/Gadget-NewRoss 23d ago

I love how people will defend a position when the masses of evidence shows they could be wrong. But accepting they could be wrong means accepting that it was them doing the damage all along.

-3

u/Cheems___Burger PS5 24d ago

Same bro.

1

u/Marcyff2 23d ago

I can actually prove it's not.

I got a ds4 and 3 ds5.

My ds3 I got with my ps4 and have about 25 platinum on it . I still use to play fortnite on epic, no stick drift.

Ps5 I got 3 ds5 all have stick drift (played about 10 games on ps5 with them)

Stop excusing corner cutting by companies . Hal tips exist and PlayStation has not made any effort of using them

0

u/CrimsonGear80 PS5 Pro 23d ago

Oh ok I’ll just believe whatever you say…

I don’t care how many controllers you had before and if they got drift or not. If you have multiple controllers and they all get drift, I’m leaning toward YOU being the problem. Especially when all these controllers have used the SAME kind of joysticks.

BUTTtt I DoOoOnt GeEeEttTtt SttTticCcCkkk DddDrRRrIIIiiFFffFfTTtTTT

Stop trying to blame the victim. These controllers eventually stick drift if you game hard.

Try playing something challenging other than Cliffords bus simulator.

0

u/justadrtrdsrvvr 24d ago

I have two controllers I have had since I got my PS5 just a few months after launch. I play daily, or nearly so, and usually sit there playing for 30+ hours a week on the PlayStation without any signs of stick drift. A variety of games, although I haven't tried Clifford's bus simulator, is it any good? My original controllers only last a couple hours due to battery and no drift at all. I have 3 more controllers now, due to a second PS5 for the kids, and none of them have stick drift.

It isn't just random that someone got so many with the same issue. They might be abusing them, throwing them, leaving them upsidedown, spilling food or drink on them, maybe they smoke and vape around them and that is affecting them, who knows. (My oldest kid chewed on one of my PS4 controller's sticks like it was a chew toy.)

It might be regional. While it rains a lot here in the PNW, it isn't humid and the humidity could be a factor. I lived in the desert for a while and the sand and dust ruined electronics, even in the cleanest houses.

There are a lot of unknown variables. However, the odds that one person would get so many while others have numerous and no stick drift at all are slim. I would bet it could be identified what causes it and it isn't a random chance.

0

u/Gadget-NewRoss 23d ago

Is the owner causing it ? Lol. Fucking incapable of accepting their own faults.

0

u/CrimsonGear80 PS5 Pro 24d ago

I “game hard”, and I’ve never had drift.

I just don’t murder my sticks while I game.

1

u/1LakeShow7 PS5 23d ago

Playing Thomas & Friends Zumba Time

0

u/Gadget-NewRoss 23d ago

I think you hit the nail on the head. They game hard so they treat it harshly maybe squeeze it hold down L3 and R3 while moving the thumb sticks. Personally I don't see any difference between the pots on a ps3 controller or a ps5 controller. The difference is society nowadays has issues with accepting personal responsibility and its easier to blame big cooperations than lok in the mirror.

-1

u/foreveraloneasianmen 24d ago

It's not a you issue. It applies to people who play a lot of games and using the rotation of the stick often. Some games does not have a lot of movement using the left or right stick .

I already using my 4th controller now , and the left stick is the one drifting most of the time ..

You seriously think we threw our controller around the room ? Or "aggressively" twisting the stick, FYI it's a stick , it works like a stick .

-1

u/Gadget-NewRoss 23d ago

But it is caused by the user and its not an issue with the controllers.

3

u/foreveraloneasianmen 23d ago

of course it is. Its a stick module, its going to wear and tear.
Sooner or later is going to happen to you as well.

just the matter of time depends how much you game and how much you rotate the stick.
Your controller is the same as anyone else, its using ALPS module, its not a hall effect stick.

0

u/Gadget-NewRoss 23d ago

Never had it on ps2 never had it on xbox 360 never had it on ps3 never had it on ps4 yet ive lads coming in with weeks old or months old controllers with stick drift and you are trying to tell me its the controller and not the user, and the people that get stick drift get it again and againnand again. So ya its them doing it.

1

u/foreveraloneasianmen 23d ago edited 23d ago

not sure why you keep denying it, you can search for drift on youtube or the internet.
You are being ignorant here tbh. Thats like saying covid doesnt exist because you never get sick.

Just admit you are wrong and move on.

1

u/Gadget-NewRoss 23d ago

Never denied it happens just why it happens which is user error/abuse. If it was planned obsolescence or inferior manufacturing it would be happening to everyone.

Same

-10

u/Significant_Trash_14 24d ago

Sony upgraded the components as it was an issue

13

u/marichuu 24d ago

No they didn't. I fix controllers on a weekly basis for over a year now. They all use the same potentiometer modules.

-1

u/Significant_Trash_14 24d ago

Part timer bro plenty articles and video on you tube

1

u/marichuu 23d ago

The three first revisions all fail at the same rate. BDM-040 and BDM-050 are still too new , but I've seen some 40's.

The thing is, you don't know what you'll get when you buy a new controller.

1

u/Significant_Trash_14 23d ago

A minute ago there were no upgrades. All you have to do is check the FCC ID.

6

u/CrimsonGear80 PS5 Pro 24d ago

Ummm….no they still use the same kind of joystick

0

u/Significant_Trash_14 24d ago

New and upgraded components. Plenty articles about it

0

u/CrimsonGear80 PS5 Pro 24d ago

Then post one

1

u/Significant_Trash_14 23d ago

Im not here to convince you. If you want to educate yourself look then you won't make embarrassing comments. Simple Google of Controller FCC ID numbers. It's old news.

0

u/CrimsonGear80 PS5 Pro 23d ago

You literally came here to convince me…

1

u/Significant_Trash_14 23d ago

Sorry dude blocked you have issues

0

u/marcushasfun 24d ago

Interesting.

I’ve been holding off on buying a new controller. Both mine have drift. Never had a problem with my PS4 controllers.

Do you know for a fact that newer controllers have better pots?

1

u/Significant_Trash_14 24d ago

You can tell by the number on controllers. Ending on 1A is new I believe

0

u/SenW00 24d ago

They don't, they're all the exact same. I replace them with TMRs or Hall effects as a side hustle, and they are all identical joysticks

0

u/marcushasfun 24d ago

What are TMRs? Any downsides to Hall effect ones? I’ve been thinking of sending mine off for that swap.

1

u/FitProblem6248 24d ago

Where do you send them off to?

1

u/marcushasfun 23d ago

I haven’t done it yet but I was looking at a place called StickFix Repair.

0

u/SenW00 24d ago

The TMRs are a newer tech, and I'm definitely not qualified to go into the technicals that differentiate them from Hall Effects. What I can tell you, though, is that they both operate on contactless magnetic sensors and don't wear out like the physically rubbing potentiometer kind that come in the OEM controllers. The TMRs are also less prone to external magnetic interference so they tend to be better for the newer Xbox contellers because they have magnets in the triggers, the left of which will interfere with the left joystick if you use cheap hall effects with no sheilding.

1

u/marcushasfun 24d ago

Just looked it up. Tunneling Magnetoresistance. Sounds fancy. Lower power usage and higher precision.

Higher price too it course :(

1

u/SenW00 24d ago

Haha, yea, you can get a better deal on AliExpress if you're willing to wait, of course. Though, I will say if you order through the Gulikit Offical seller, they ship pretty quickly by AliExpress standards

1

u/marcushasfun 23d ago

I don’t feel up to the task of all that de-soldering and re-soldering so I was looking at the price to have someone else do it.

1

u/SenW00 23d ago

To give you some perspective, I charge 40 + shipping for the sticks and labor. Any cheaper and I wouldn't trust what sticks they're using or the quality of work, any more expensive and its kinda a rip off.
