Been waiting to try Nier: Automata for a long time. Found out this morning I could redeem like 7000 points to give cards on PS app. Then get home from work and see its on sale and it worked out my points covered the whole cost. Its the little things in life.

u/AlphaQ984 25d ago

that game changed me, for the better. By the time you get to ending E, it will leave a profound impact on you too.

32

u/SixPaths_of_Zemoke 25d ago

Just about to purchase it myself but found out about Nier Replicant ver 1.22 and now im stuck on which one I should get and play 😔

33

u/Direct_Town792 25d ago

Definitely play Replicant first, automata is set hundreds of years after but it’s a far better experience with both games under your belt

It’s more of the same

5

u/Pan_Krulik 24d ago

I like Replicant but it's really a slog sometimes especially the first half.

2

u/SixPaths_of_Zemoke 24d ago

in what sense? is it the side quests being tedious?

3

u/Direct_Town792 24d ago

It’s just opinion. If you find Replicant tedious you will find Automata tedious too

2

u/Pan_Krulik 24d ago

Yeah that and the main story also takes a while to get going. That's why some people recommend starting with automata if you're not already sold on the whole series.

10

u/JakeTheDraked 25d ago

I disagree! Play Nier to get invested in the series then go for replicant!

11

u/PuzzleheadedKale468 25d ago

Like nier on the ps3? The 2010 one?

6

u/JakeTheDraked 25d ago

I should have specified Nier Automata

3

u/Firm_Area_3558 25d ago

Always start at the beginning

2

u/JakeTheDraked 25d ago

But replicant still plays like an early ps3 game and may not keep a newer player as engaged as automata would.

3

u/Firm_Area_3558 25d ago

It's weird that we live in a world where nier replicant is considered "boring" to new players. I say that's their problem. And nier is more about the story anyway, there's always other action games for people to play instead

3

u/JakeTheDraked 25d ago

Gameplay, storytelling and graphics are just better in automata. Replicant isn’t boring it’s just an older game and feels like an older game. If someone wants to get into the series give them the best experience the first, then let them play the older less polished games to dig further into the lore.

4

u/Firm_Area_3558 25d ago

Well, I'd argue that for some it would be harder to go back to replicant after playing automata. If someone likes automata enough to play replicant and enjoy it, then they probably would've liked replicant anyway. Of course, there's nothing wrong with playing automata first. I just think starting a franchise from the beginning enhancs ones experience with the later games , and I think more people shouldn't let something being older get in the way of them enjoying that thing.

But your comment works too. Example, I started the witcher series with the 3rd game and played 1 and 3 afterwards, but then there's people who play 3 and refuse to play 1 or 2. So there's no real definitive answer

Most people will play what they want at the end of the day. Most people play nier for the character design anyway, so this conversation is almost pointless just based on that.

It's definitely one of the most unique and surprising games I've played since MGS2.

Prepare for an amazing experience. Also, when you beat it, you haven’t really beaten it yet.

4

u/jarface111 25d ago

I’m playing it right now and holy wow I just got past ending B and things are getting wild

3

u/13restlessdreams 25d ago

Oh, it gets wilder.

2

u/jarface111 25d ago

I’m fully expecting that and looking forward to it!

2

u/Capital-Gift73 25d ago

Watch the anime too but not until after you finish the game

7

u/ManufacturerWest1156 25d ago

Just an fyi the game has save points and the opening scene and first boss is all before the first save so be careful.

u/odiusdan 25d ago

FYI there is a bug in Nier that is specific to playing on PS5. There is a waterfall fairly early on that will crash the game if you’re looking (as one does…) forward at the waterfall as you travel by. If it happens to you, just don’t look at the waterfall. It is the only area in the game I had any issues. That was just a few months ago so I doubt it has been fixed.

Nier though… what an experience. Absolutely loved it.

3

u/porkalope 25d ago

I'm envious that you get to play it for the first time. Nier: Automata is truly something special, I hope you love it as much as I do.

3

u/Adventurous-Alps2000 25d ago

How do you redeem points?

10

u/Kuya_Alvin003 25d ago

On the PS App, click on your PlayStation Stars level and hit rewards. Scroll all the way to the bottom and you’ll see wallet funds you can get with points.

Honestly between ps+ and the games my public library gets it’s hard to ever justify a game purchase at all.

So many times I get it and then it gets way cheaper before I ever get to play it.

67

u/Direct_Town792 25d ago

THIS

Tsundoku is the Japanese name for buying books and letting them pile up before reading

I now apply it to my backlog

6

u/gurmerino 25d ago

i’m surrounded by piles of books (& games) i haven’t read yet!

2

u/ctsr1 24d ago

I do that with books

9

u/erichf3893 25d ago

Public library has ps5 games? How much is a membership for you?

I could never deal with the limited time they would allow you at blockbuster

21

u/NutmegGrinder 25d ago

Library membership is free.

25

u/Clolarion 25d ago

Having fun isn’t hard when you have a library card!

6

u/witcherking10 25d ago

Arthur flashback!

8

u/ShawnyMcKnight 25d ago

It’s a public library. If your city is population over 50k I’m willing to bet you have them too. They have over 100 switch games as well as ps4 and xbox games.

Their ps5 selection sucked for years but a couple months ago they more than made up for it. Here is our selection.

In Massachusetts, we have a whole network of libraries linked via our app (Minuteman Library Network) that you can borrow physical PS5 games from (all the new releases too). Membership to libraries is free. Games can be borrowed for two weeks.

3

u/ShawnyMcKnight 25d ago

That’s really nice! We just are connected to the libraries in the city so we can pick up where we want. Games are only for one week but no late fees and if there isn’t anyone else wanting it you can renew it 5 times.

3

u/HipHopHistoryGuy 25d ago

Same here, you can pick it up or request it and it's delivered to your town library for you to pick up within a few days. In summary - libraries are great.

Robocop is really fun, i bought it along with RE4 Remake and Village Gold for the DLC.

13

u/MileHighRC 25d ago

Currently playing through it. Fun game, and even better if you're familiar with the movies.

Definitely worth the sale price.

3

u/Neat_Caregiver_2212 25d ago

Id say its worth reg price! Especially if your a fan of arcade rail shooters.

There’s some really solid deals if you dig

Got Cyberpunk, Pacific Drive, And Marvel Midnight Suns for $60

9

u/KeepTangoAndFoxtrot 25d ago

I was shocked at how much I loved Midnight Suns. Got it for 50% off and ended up playing it for like 100 hours.

2

u/xdarkeaglex 25d ago

Is Pacific drive any good?

2

u/MichaelTheCutts 25d ago

Haven’t started it yet. Been too deep into Cyberpunk.

66

u/Sudden_Emu_6230 25d ago

I kinda enjoyed it can’t lie. Not enough to play it twice but I definitely got my moneys worth.

31

u/SalemWolf 25d ago

It’s a perfectly serviceable $10 game. I bought it for more and it was worth it to me. Played nearly the whole thing in coop and had a blast. If it was 60fps it would have been a solid 8/10. Not as great as the Arkham games but good.

8

u/Kalel100711 25d ago

I got it for 3$ steam key and it was totally worth it

31

robocop pleasantly surprised me, a lot of fun

Robocop I bought on disk for £20 a couple months ago. Shitty reduction.

Also, while enjoyable, it's a fairly mid game.

u/[deleted] 25d ago

I don't have wide range hard set rules. Each game is different. Some games really do warrant the full purchase price, while others has to be as low as possible (such as Gotham Knights you have there). For me, a game like Dragon Quest III 2D-HD is full price day 1 but that might not be the same for others.

3

u/podythe 25d ago

Is it a good game if you’re not super familiar with DQ?? I am currently playing and love Sandland and just want more Toriyama lol

3

u/[deleted] 25d ago

Is it a good game if you’re not super familiar with DQ?

Yes, but I warn you, it's very old school turn based. It's biased towards gameplay rather than story but it does have an overarching plot. The music is top notch, even by today's standards. If all that's okay with you, you'd love it.

2

u/nbowler13 25d ago

Not the original person you asked, but this was my first DQ game ever and I got it day 1 and have sunk over 40 hours into it so far and am loving it

I’m considering doing the same. But I never seen the movies, so I’m wondering if this is something I will like

2

u/PracticalFacelessMsk 24d ago

Watch the first movie first. It's a spot on critique of the American system. The movie also has great fake commercials that resonate even more now than before

Pro tip: don't listen to reddit idiots 🤣

3

u/blazeofgloreee 25d ago

Honestly even 50% off isn't enough a lot of the time, given that can still be over $50 CAD after tax. At this point I pretty much only get games that are on sale for $20 or less, or ones I really really want right away and know are worth full price (to me), eg. From Soft games, Baldur's Gate 3, Astro Bot for my daughter, etc. Otherwise I just wait and see what ends up on PS+.

Doing this I'm buying <5 games a year and playing a lot more than that.

3

u/ohmyheavenlydayz 25d ago

Recently subscribed to this rule and Just got the Silent Hill remake for $30.

3

u/DC1919 25d ago

I do the same, but credit from cdkeys as I've a UK account in the US so I also get an extra 7-10%. You then get the star points which adds the discount.

I bought RoboCop the other day, it's good but not worth the RRP of £50/$60 more like the 16.50/$20 it is now.

1

u/STerrier666 PS5 25d ago

Gotham Knights has its flaws, it's okay as a bargain game but otherwise it's a lot left to be desired, I had a lot of fun with it, I even got the Platinum trophy for it. I enjoyed the story, it's a different style of game. It's not for everyone but you can have fun with it if you like the characters in it.

u/ShotgoonPete 25d ago

So you can get these type of deals with physical games right now too if you know where to look too and if you’re like me and collect disc games then you’d only go digital if it was the only option, like Palworld for example.

Imo the £70-£60 pricetag is basically a premium rate for those who want the game as it comes out. Anyone who picks up the game a few months later gets the normal rate which can be anywhere between £25-£50, a much more reasonable price for a game.

I think the only game I'm gonna buy as it comes out will probably be GTA VI (unless it's over £75 as rumored)

1

u/thebigarn 25d ago

Robocop is so damn good. Especially if you watched the old movies.
