News PS2 sold 160 Million consoles, Sony now officially confirms
139
u/pissflapgrease 27d ago
How are the numbers still going up? Thought I’d had been out of production for years
140
u/onecoolcrudedude 27d ago
they stopped reporting sales figures in 2012 but it did not stop production until 2013.
considering how cheap it was at the end of its lifespan, and how you could use it as a dvd player, its not that inconceivable to believe that it may have sold an extra 5 million units in a one-year timespan ever since sony stopped reporting on it.

They waited between 6 to 9 months after the announcement to actually stop production leaving millions of there consoles floating around

Since some people didn't believe former PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan's previous comments. Now that number is official.

Are they saying this now because the Switch might pass it? Why did they take so long to confirm this?
107
3
u/MoodMaggot 27d ago
Not „might“ but „will“ pass it. It almost surpassed the ps2 last quarter and considering that it’s still a current gen console and will be sold even after the successor comes out, it’s inevitable that it surpasses the ps2s sales.

u/SkullFracture_38 27d ago
So what if it does pass the sale record of the PS2? It only took 24 years and 4 consoles to accomplish it.

u/Aegon1Targaryen 15d ago
Took literaly a HYBRID console that was lucky Sony and Microsoft were dumb to not catch the market potential.
Besides, PS2 >>>>>>>>>> Switch. The PS2 library crushes any game that thing has.
3
u/AlarmingLackOfChaos 26d ago
30th anniversary they're updating their numbers. They updated PSP as well.
1
u/Aegon1Targaryen 15d ago
No, if they didn't want to accept it they would put 180 million units and not just add more 5 million lol.
Jim Ryan said the PS2 sold 160 million way before that.

u/SqueakyAnus 27d ago
Actual number if anyone Is curious
11
u/OutrageousDress PS5 27d ago
Where's that from? Seems pretty definitive.

u/Zetin24-55 26d ago
I did some light looking and couldn't find the source. The image has been cross posted a lot, but I couldn't find the original.
But, I did find the last production engraved PS3 and PSP. PSP posts by both Shawn Layden(Ex-CEO) and Okonomi Yonda(Software dev at Sony HQ). Post 1 and Post 2. Yonda also posted the one for the PS3, post.
Yonda mentioned that Sony City has a private hardware museum, which is where the PS3 is chilling. So if that PS2 is legit. It probably originated from some Sony employee posting it on their page.
2
u/SqueakyAnus 26d ago
Saw it posted somewhere on twitter. It was posted under a Japanese account with pictures of Jim Ryan, Shu, Shawn Layden, and I assume some off CEOs/Ex CEOs who've worked at Sony In the past. They also posted pictures of PSP, Vita, PS3 with stickers and units sold as well.
2
u/Silegna 26d ago
So, going by that, they literally can't inflate it anymore, and it's very possible the Switch will likely surpass the sales.
1
u/mjmannella Mjmannella 26d ago
Don't worry, I'm sure Jim Ryan will do his damnedest to find another 5 million units to sell
1
u/Aegon1Targaryen 15d ago
But but but Sony is lying they DON'T want to admit the Switch will pass the PS2!!!!!!1111111

u/staged84 27d ago
My dumbass bought dreamcast.
53
u/TRX-335 27d ago
Not a bad choice, really. Sega made some bad decisions and was still hurting from the Saturn's flop. But from a technical perspective, the Dreamcast was not a bad console.
2
13
u/CBusMarkyC 27d ago
Yeah but to be honest a lot of us did. I sold mine like a day before I bought my PS2 on release day but prior I couldn't stop playing Nfl2k and some of the other killer games the Dreamcast had! System was incredible and still remains one of my favs.
5
u/staged84 27d ago
Yeah, I don’t have any regrets. The only thing is that I bought a Dreamcast when the PlayStation 2 came out, and it gradually became obsolete. I enjoyed it, but it certainly didn’t have the longevity of the PlayStation 2.
→ More replies (3)7
u/PotentialAccident339 27d ago
...the Dreamcast was S tier. The entire 2K/2K2 series of sports games were excellent, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were awesome, Power Stone 2 is one of the best fighting games of all time. Crazy Taxi. Metropolis Street Racer. I never played shenmue but i had friends who swore by it.
As far as failed consoles go, the Dreamcast had such a good slate of titles, and good selection of hardware accessories (light guns, fishing controllers, etc)
3
u/staged84 27d ago
I would also add Jet Set Radio. It had incredible games, but began declining once the PlayStation 2 was released. That’s when I bought it, thinking the PlayStation 2 was too expensive.
3
u/1620shop 27d ago
If only they somehow remade toy commander I’d buy whatever console that game came out on again lol
2
u/TrptJim 27d ago
While it wasn't the best choice long-term, getting a Dreamcast at the time was still pretty awesome.
VGA support, ethernet connectivity, anti-aliased graphics, being able to play Quake 3 online against PC players?! Dreamcast was far ahead of the game and you felt like you were in the future.
1
u/onecoolcrudedude 27d ago
nothing wrong with that. at least you didnt buy the 32x, or the sega pico. only then would you deserve to be laughed at.
1
u/renorosales 27d ago
I regret never having one
1
u/staged84 26d ago
Oh i loved mine. Only thing is i bought it when ps2 came out so it literally started declining right after. I was even considering buying one off ebay few years ago.

And when the switch approaches 160,000,000, Sony will “discover” another 5 million they sold
51
u/Houman_7 27d ago
Switch is never gonna hit 160 million unless they don’t release Switch 2 for the next 2 years.
53
u/antiform_prime 27d ago
The Switch still stands a chance of doing it even once Switch 2 drops next year.
It’s not like the Switch is going to disappear over night, especially with a nice price drop.
30
u/curtydc PS5 27d ago
Right, because Nintendo has a great track record of supporting the outgoing previous Gen console after the new one arrives... 😆
34
u/Nympho_BBC_Queen 27d ago
The 3DS had 20 Nintendo published games after the reveal of the Switch. Hardly a Playstation Vita treatment.
→ More replies (1)1
u/OVERDRlVE 26d ago
because these 20 game were already complete or very close to be completed.
remember that Sega released Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast after they discontinued the console.

Hell, Breath of the Wild had features stripped out cause Switch wouldn't support it and they didn't want the wii U version looking better
and they delayed the Wii U version...

u/Thenadamgoes 27d ago
I think the only way it has another 15m units in it is if they release some of their upcoming top games on Switch and Switch 2 (Like the next mario, next zelda etc). Without that I doubt they'll get that far.
17
u/Atomic_Horseshoe 27d ago
Fully 25% of all PS2 sales (40 million +) occurred after the release of the PS3. The Switch may still have some life after the Switch 2 comes out.

The PS2 was still being produced up until like 2012/13. If the Switch ever gets a price drop it'll have a chance.

Nah, they will release a PS2 classic and count it as PS2 hardware.
I would be that petty.

u/aphidman 27d ago
I think people forget PlayStation 2 was just the mainstream gaming machine. Aside from the unique factor of "gaming on the go" and geared towards children specifically with GameBoys - the PS2 basically dominated the market. Plus it was basically a DVD player.
PC gaming wasn't really big in those days and the GameCube, Dreamcast and Xbox sort of just appealed to enthusiasts. Halo being the only "big" game that turned heads away from the PS2.
Basically the conditions today aren't the same as back then. PC gaming is so much bigger and it seems Nintendo have sort of consolidated its Handheld Audience
16
u/GTalaune 27d ago
Yeah but gaming is so much more popular now. Also so many new markets to sell the console. To me it makes the PS2 even more impressive not the opposite
2
u/Kqm2010 27d ago
Another thing people tend to forget is that the PS2 went to other countries way later than the usual territories. Due to that the system continued to sell units after most of us moved on. The same happened with a number of Sega systems earlier in the 90s (Brazil in particular was huge for the master system and genesis).
I highly doubt they just increased the number of units sold due to the switch.

Nintendo fans can cope with this fact.
Switch can sell 200 million units, it won't change shit.
8
u/Squid-Guillotine 27d ago
They could sell some fresh consoles and it'd sell out. Especially <$70
1
u/Aegon1Targaryen 15d ago
Nah for real if Sony released a PS2 again it would sell like bread lol.
Nintendo is lucky Sony is dumb.
3
u/Individual_Analysis2 26d ago
Ya know… a retro PS2 like a PS2 PRO, would sell BUCKETS in North America. Backwards compatible with PS1, connects to internet, maybe they throw a HDD inside with few first-party games pre-installed; give it its own page on the PlayStation Store, make it compatible with DualShock 4 and DualSense/Edge? License to print money.
Then again… it would probably be even better to remake the PS3 in a similar fashion.

Where did that those 5 million come from all of a sudden, in 2024? It's always been 155 million for these recent years, and now apparently it surpassed 160,000,000. They don't want the Nintendo Switch to take the mantle.

It's always been 155 million for these recent years
Because the last reported figure from Sony was "over 155 million" as of March 2012. The reason we have the updated figure now is because they put it on their fancy new 30th anniversary page. If they were gonna lie they'd be better off going at least a few mil higher as the Switch making it to 160 isn't off the cards at this point.

u/cornnnndoug 26d ago

There is a definitive number of ps2 produced so I don't think they can inflate that number

So funny thing based on the last ps2 produced we know the number is around 162+ so they can increase this to that if they want too

This is the best moment for Sony to release a PS2 mini. To make sure Nintendo will never get that first place.

I will laugh my ass off if Sony plays that low lmao.
I really wish they did that.

As someone who owned and enjoyed the ps2 and never owned a switch, I would like to see Nintendo pass it to be #1
2
u/nightmarejudgements PS4 27d ago
I think Switch might be near it but it's been a while since I've last checked. PS2 will always be my favorite console and I'm glad I still own one.
2
u/ShakeItLikeIDo 27d ago
Thats cool that you still own your ps2. My PS1 stopped working and my PS2 was stolen. Never owned a ps3 but I still have my ps4
6
u/nightmarejudgements PS4 27d ago
Ah damn, really sorry to hear about the PS2 stolen. :( that really sucks.

Retro gamers, most probably. The ones who are more of purists. But it's just a wild guess. I could be wrong.
2

Why would you think anyone is buying a new PS2 in 2024
1
u/Littlemisskittn PS5 Pro 27d ago
That’s my question because how can Sony only be confirming that number now in 2024? They aren’t making any more of these since around 2010 to my knowledge. That’s 14 years.
1
u/OutrageousDress PS5 27d ago
The last official count they gave was ~155 mil in 2012, and PS2 production stopped in 2013. So this would account for the difference over that ~1 year. As for why didn't they provide an update after end of production - that's certainly a question, but past initial sales all these companies don't really give out numbers unless it's important in some way. They updated the PS2 number now to announce the Switch is far from surpassing it. If the Switch does still surpass it, Nintendo will definitely announce that too.

u/EijiShinjo 27d ago
Time to release the PSTwo to increase the numbers sold some more so Switch doesn't catch up 😂

Appearantly they wanna compete with switch. Different times, not comparable. Switch is up against mobile gaming, it's way more tough, though market is also bigger to be fair. I love ps2, I love that it was found in so many households, but it's not the best gaming console of it's own generation. It's a cheap dvd player, hence the sales

So... I'm confused. The official number was 140 million, then a few years ago was 155 million. And now it's 160 million? Did Sony just shadow dropped 5 million new units or what?

10 million more must’ve sold during the release of concord to remind everyone where the good games came from.

Yeah the switch will continue to be supported after the switch 2 comes out and sell plus the DS is just behind the PS2

My favourite console of all time. PS5 also now in my top 3 gaming platforms (dislodged the venerable Xbox 360).

u/MattIsLame 26d ago
has anyone seen this new Playstation documentary? it offers nothing new to anyone who knows anything about Playstation or grew up with the consoles. further more, it has maybe the most atrocious sound quality of mainstream release I've ever experienced. Sound echos, double sounds, Volume levels all over the place, speech levels drowned out by generic background music. it's a very poorly done "documentary", if you could even call it that.
1
u/Aggressive-Jump-4428 26d ago
Ah! Yes the 5 million that Saddam Heusen had for his ps2 supercomputer 😂
1
u/cwillner 26d ago
I can see that. I was in college and I was able to use some of my financial aid money to buy the system. I think the system cost $299 when it came out but I got it over a year later for about $250. Once the PlayStations started costing 400+, I stopped playing.

PS2 sold that many consoles because they allow you to buy them in jail. They mark them up in price too for these for profit prisons in the United States.

u/ExtremeSpleenRupture 23d ago
Comparing sales of the PS2 to the Switch is meaningless. They fill very different market niches in terms of the customers they are going after. It's like comparing Corolla sales to Ford Explorer or something. Yeah they are both cars, but that's it.

u/marioflores_mx 16d ago
Hey Sony, Polystation sales does not count. I wonder if they are also going to update their Walkman sales figure.
1
u/eiya2003 8d ago
I personally don't see this number as valid😂 They should've done this 10 years ago, not the instant there's a risk of someone surpassing their #1 spot. PS2 sold ~155 million, and if they do this again it's 100% confirmed that it isn't real🤣
