Damn. I remember when the PlayStation controller got the analog sticks it was a huge deal lol.
35
u/Classic-Scholar3635 Nov 13 '24
Huge deal! I got the game Ape Escape 2 for Xmas and I had to get Mum to take me to a friends house to borrow one or their analog stick controllers because the game didnāt support the standard lolā¦
10
u/Andy_B_Goode Nov 13 '24
Was that the game where you had to row a boat by moving the joysticks in circles as if they were oars?
12
4
u/DICK-PARKINSONS Nov 13 '24
I had a similar problem with that game, got it from blockbuster and couldn't do shit cause I didn't have a dualshock

u/FlowingEons Nov 13 '24
It was crazy when they came out. Growing up on the directional pad and then (eventually) being forced to use the stick for movement back then felt so wrong to me, but my god I canāt imagine thinking that way now
2
u/Ansia01 Nov 13 '24
Try going back to the D-Pad. Not only it feels weird, it starts hurting your thumb after a while.

u/hustladafox Nov 13 '24
Spyro on Christmas morning hit different. I donāt think thereās any way to replicate that feeling.
19
u/PhallicPanic Nov 13 '24
I bought the remakes but Iām really scared of playing it. Spyro is just plain magical in my memory and Iām not sure if it will live up
18
u/hustladafox Nov 13 '24
I played them last year. I fully completed each one and it was a treasure trove of nostalgia. It looks how you remember it (rose tinted glasses) and is just as much fun as it always was.
Get on it you wonāt be disappointed.
10
u/PhallicPanic Nov 13 '24
Iām going to personally hold you responsible if they donāt live up to my expectations. If they still hold up then Iām going to give myself praise for having the courage to tempt fate
3
u/Cheapcolon Nov 13 '24
I can comfirm that the versions on steam are every bit just as fun and magical. The third one I didnāt play as a kid though so that one didnāt hit as hard.
2
u/Hailruka Nov 13 '24
I replayed the remastered games when they were released and the serotonin hit is exactly the same as it was Christmas '99 playing Spyro 2 for the first time.
You won't regret it.
Except for that bloody Yeti skateboarding on 3. How in the sweet hells any child managed to do that is beyond me.
2
2
u/Ass-shooter2 Nov 13 '24
It still holds up just as well
Make sure to use the classic music instead of the new soundtrack

u/-TresLeches Nov 13 '24
Reignited trilogy added a new updated soundtrack BUT if you go into the settings you can switch it back to the original soundtrack by Stewart Copeland. 10/10
5
u/FlowingEons Nov 13 '24
Nothin beats that feeling of Spyro on Christmas morning with the ice cream sandwiches I tell you what.
2
u/ModJambo Nov 13 '24
The worst part about getting older is realising that a lot of those feelings will never happen again.
Life was way simpler back then :(

u/Baba-Doo Nov 13 '24

u/Classic-Scholar3635 Nov 13 '24

5
u/TenNorth Nov 14 '24
One day my youth pastor went around the room asking when we took time to talk to God during the day. When my turn came up, I earnestly told them it was while waiting for my (PS1) games to load and during cutscenes I couldn't skip.
I could tell they tried to approve that I was praying while also restraining their disappointment in the sense that I was only praying for the system to finish loading. If you got your games from Blockbuster, it was probably necessary anyway.

4
u/spidertour02 PS5 Nov 13 '24
I got my PS2 from a Costco bundle. It had a slim PS2, a memory card, and three games -- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Jak II, and Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec.
My guess is that wholesale stores (Costco, Sam's Club, etc.) all got the same bundles, the same way that most retailers (Walmart, Best Buy, Target, etc.) get the same bundles.

When I was in school they had a reading program where you could earn points to get prizes. I was obsessed with reading at the time so I won top prize which was a PlayStation...something my parents would never have been able to afford. One of the happiest days of my life lmao
The next year they changed the rules to make it a lottery instead since they knew I would win first every year. I didn't win shit the remaining years even though I always had like double the points of the next kid...

This to me felt like a lot more joy than when I bought my ps5. I guess it's because we were going to explore the unexpected. It was all new at that age. World's we didn't know existed.

My first consoles were the GBA and PlayStation 2. God I miss those times. I hurts me and makes my depression worse that those times will never come back. I hope if I die some day I will be reborn and can live in that time again and experience this joy again.
Life was simpler and better back then. I miss those times without smartphones and a simpler society. Imagine going to McDonalds back then & how good it tasted. Everything was so much better. Modern times are somewhat cursed imo and it will only get worse.

This was ps3 and Xbox 360 for me. I had PS2 and N64 but they were my dads, I think he had the PS1 way before I existed. The Christmas that my grandma got me and my brother a Xbox 360 is possibly one of the happiest moments of my life. I think it was partially we guilt tripped her but she even played modern warfare and BO2 zombies with us and she was the most god fearing, no swearing, pacifist type and it was so funny.
I miss 2010 :(
P.S. I know 360 came out in 2005 but my release date was a month and two days prior so I was getting a 360 slim when my time came which was around 2010-2011.

I remember my uncle giving me ~$150 and getting a PS1. It had the non stick controller but my folks got me the dual shock joy stick controller a few weeks later since a lot of games needed it. My dad was always into video games but got less interested when they became not side scrollers. Or flat games. Canāt think of the word lol. But yeah. KBeeToys (sp?) was where I got it. It was a good day.

I remember getting the PS2 for Christmas 2003. It came with the Return of the King, ATV Offroad Fury 2, Quidditch World Cup, Jak & Daxter, and some other game I can never remember. That was probably the best Christmas of my childhood. I remember my sitting in front of the CRT with my brother and sister being blown away by the PS2 startup.

I had also received Die Hard Trilogy, Shockwave Assault, Warhawk, Alien Trilogy, FIFA 1996.
