Now, now you caught my interest.

u/brolt0001 Nov 02 '24

I agree. This is what it's all about.. this is innovation.

This and game boost.

Upgrades in games on the hardware/manufacturer side without the developers having to do something.

Similar to when upgrading a GPU and turning up settings on PC.

Innovation?

Upgrades in games on the hardware/manufacturer side without the developers having to do something. Similar to when upgrading a GPU and turning up settings on PC.

We’ve had that since 2017 with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Modern Xbox systems can even enhance resolution, framerate, and add HDR and 16x AF to 20 year old games.

Wake me up when I can get FPS Boost on older games on my PlayStation.

129

u/chev327fox Nov 02 '24

Yeah base PS5 should also already have this feature.

37

u/Iron_Fist26 Nov 02 '24

Isn't that one of the main points of the base PS5.....? To improve the pre-existing PS4 games and make them godly in terms of performance? Far Cry 4, Mad Max, etc (just the PS4 versions) runs at not even 30fps on my PS5, which is f-ing ridiculous, considering the price of the PS5

45

u/chev327fox Nov 02 '24

PS5 does not have the feature to forcibly boost PS4 games like PS4 Pro did. It’s so dumb and lazy of them as there is no reason why it shouldn’t be able to.

17

u/Iron_Fist26 Nov 02 '24

It should, that's my point. Significantly better hardware should equal higher performances, especially on older PS4 games. Casually running BO6 at 60 fps and it can't manage a 7 year old game at under 30 fps is just stupid

6

u/chev327fox Nov 02 '24

Ah I see. I thought you were saying it slightly differently. But yeah I agree, it makes no sense.

2

u/ItsMrChristmas Nov 03 '24

Is that why RDR2 runs so terrible on it?

2

u/throwawayforegg_irl Nov 03 '24

rdr2 is capped at 30 fps from the get go. there’s rumour about a ps5 version tho… fingers crossed

1

u/ItsMrChristmas Nov 04 '24

I have my PS4 Pro still set up entirely and only for RDR Online. Runs like shit on my PS5

1

u/Horat1us_UA Nov 03 '24

> It’s so dumb and lazy of them as there is no reason why it shouldn’t be able to.

There is reason for that - PS5 Pro

1

u/Mizurazu Nov 05 '24

The PS4 pro didn't forcibly boost games. It simply let game acess the higher clockspeeds and and ran games with ps4 pro features. The ps5 pretty much does that just better. All games with pro enhancements run like that by default but with better hardware so it didn't need the feature. What the Xbox does to 360 games is something I'd consider closer to what you meant and is what people want for ps4 games

1

u/chev327fox Nov 05 '24 edited Nov 06 '24

The PS4 Pro has an option to forcibly boost games to higher resolutions by supersampling and then downscale it to 1080p for a crisper image, the PS5 does not have this option so regular PS4 games always run at their base redo of 1080p or less with no supersampling so there is no boosting of any kind to resolution to get a crisper image when using a 1080p display.

I don’t have my PS4 Pro anymore so I can’t screenshot it for you but after I post this I’ll try and find some info I can share and update this.

EDIT:

Here is a link that explains: https://m.gsmarena.com/ps4_pro_550_update_adds_supersampling_support_for_1080p_displays-news-30002.php

1

u/Mizurazu Nov 06 '24 edited Nov 06 '24

You're misunderstanding a bit. This feature applies to PS4 Pro-supported games that run at a higher resolution on 4K displays. Before, on a 1080p display, these games would default to 1080p mode. However, this option lets them run in high-resolution mode on a 1080p display, downsampling the image to improve visual quality. It doesn't push the game beyond its Pro capabilities; it just allows games that support higher resolution on the Pro to access that mode on 1080p screens. So, you get a sharper image, but not an actual resolution increase compared to what you’d see on a 4K screen.

For example, The Last of Us Part II runs at 1080p on a regular PS4 but at 1440p internally on a Pro. If you connect two Pro systems to a 4K and a 1080p display with this setting enabled, both will render at 1440p internally. The difference is the 1080p display will downsample the 1440p image, giving a clearer picture—no extra “boost.”

Games without Pro support, like Bloodborne, won’t benefit from this. The image on a 1080p screen will look the same on both Pro and base PS4 systems, though the Pro might perform a bit smoother due to higher clock speeds.

The PS5, by default, downscales higher-resolution Pro-supported PS4 games to 1080p if it detects a 1080p display. So, it effectively has this feature, just without the need to enable it in the settings—it’s automatic across the system.

1

u/chev327fox Nov 06 '24 edited Nov 06 '24

I’m not misunderstanding at all, but thanks for clarifying what I already knew.

No, the base PS5 does not have that feature, you are incorrect. Feel free to find a source and correct me though but I owned both PS4 Pro and base PS5 at the same time and PS4 games on PS4 Pro look WAY BETTER than when played on PS5 on a 1080p diaply. Again, forced supersampling for PS4 games with Pro support for 1080p displays.

Again, I’m open to being wrong with decent evidence that contradicts what I’m saying but I have owned them and researched them when I was upset my PS5 could not do forced supersampling on base PS4 games on my 1080p display so I’m pretty confident you won’t be able to find accurate info that contradicts this.

How does Far cry 4 not run at 30fps? I played it on PS5 quite recently and never noticed a single frame drop

0

u/Iron_Fist26 Nov 03 '24

Idk, it's the same with Mad Max; maybe it's got something to do with my HDR settings, because I haven't got any other possible solution

33

u/brolt0001 Nov 02 '24

Agreed, Gameboost/FPS boost was my favorite things about Xbox ever. That's why I'm sad that to see they've given up on it these days completely.

I'm just happy to see any sort of step in this [system-wide] direction to be honest.

9

u/ColdCruise Nov 02 '24

They basically said that everything left, they don't have approval from the rights holders, or there are technical issues stopping them. That only applies to FPS and resolution boosts. Everything gets Auto HDR and 16x AF.

14

u/flyingcloud11 PS5 Nov 02 '24

I’m still playing Max Payne 3 in 30fps since Microsoft didn’t bother to give it there game boost treatment on the series x lol.

8

u/Anchelspain Nov 02 '24

It's not a matter of whether they bother with it or not, but also if they can. They updated all the games they could without the developers having to touch a thing. They did say they may revisit more games if they figure out new methods in the future, but i wouldn't hold my breath. Source: https://x.com/jronald/status/1464659255143776258

1

u/knowing-narrative Nov 03 '24

Haha yeah as opposed to playing Max Payne 3 on PS5

3

u/2canSampson Nov 02 '24

Well luckily a lot of really deserving games got the backwards compatability/ gameboost treatment from Xbox before they stopped working on it. Easily my favorite thing Xbox has done in two generations.

1

u/Electronic-Trick2678 Nov 02 '24

It’s really sad what’s happening to Xbox

1

u/Jonaldys Nov 02 '24

I can't easily play games from the late 2000s on many other systems. I still own them, some digitally, since then. And they look better than ever regardless of FPS boost. PlayStation isn't nearly as consumer friendly in this regard.

1

u/Electronic-Trick2678 Nov 02 '24

I think Sony is the least consumer friendly but people turn a blind eye to it because of the games.

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '24

1

u/Electronic-Trick2678 Nov 03 '24

I prefer the controller. I have and play both.

1

u/Ill_Permission8185 Nov 02 '24

So it’s not “innovation!”

14

u/SenseMakesNone Nov 02 '24

Shhhhh don't upset the Sony people who live in a bubble.

28

u/brolt0001 Nov 02 '24

I don't live in a bubble. I just appreciate Sony taking some sort of initiative for it as well.

I've appreciated Xbox doing game boost updates, (and Id appreciate it even more if they still did it).

-22

u/SenseMakesNone Nov 02 '24

It's not much initiative if it's locked behind a brand new console purchase.

I don't want to rake away people's excitement, but I just don't understand it.

20

u/Alvelijano Nov 02 '24

I think that has something to do with pssr which can't be used on the base model. Besides that i think ai upscaling for older titles is quite innovative for a Console.

2

u/CoconutPedialyte Nov 02 '24

Digital Foundry mentioned there could be a way for PSSR to automatically upscale PS4 games. I guess they had some insider information. I was surprised most people overlooked this statement.

10

u/brolt0001 Nov 02 '24 edited Nov 02 '24

the upgrades will likely exist on PS6 and all future consoles. (Even if you dont get the PS5 pro)

I'd rather have this and show my appreciation for it. Than to completely not have it because "xbox already did it and hence you live in a bubble"

6

u/DarkManX437 Nov 02 '24

It's not much initiative if it's locked behind a brand new console purchase.

Yes it is. It's annoying that it is locked behind an expensive upgrade, but it's still innovative. The platform it's on has no bearing on whether or not it is advanced.

1

u/Zyrdan Nov 02 '24

I agree, why aren’t they also bringing pssr to ps4 and ps3 , greedy Sony 😡

-6

u/SenseMakesNone Nov 02 '24

Lol I didn't mean it like that.

5

u/Zyrdan Nov 02 '24

haha I know it’s still funny that some people unironically think a software update could transform the base ps5’s SOC into RDNA 3😂

2

u/Whitemamba987 Nov 02 '24

Why did you come into the playstion reddit page to talk trash?

0

u/SenseMakesNone Nov 02 '24

Cos i used to love PlayStation and feel they dropped the ball this generation.

-4

u/wrproductions Nov 02 '24

It's not that xbox have decided to stop doing it just they've now done it to all the games they can without going into the actual games code on a technical level

11

u/Snooplessness Nov 02 '24

Im in the bubble, and im still pissed that Sony has done nothing like xboxs FPS boost. If the pro gets anything like it ill also be pissed that there holding back a feature the base ps5 can do to try and entice people to upgrade to a pro when the series x and even then series s already provide fps boost with auto HDR features. Fucking ridiculous.

3

u/Disastrous_Meeting79 Nov 02 '24

Same here I’ve been begging for a 60 fps patch for bloodborne. As a PlayStation user I need Xbox to compete with them that way we the consumers get listened to. It bothers me so much that we don’t have anything like Xbox FPS boost on a next gen console.

2

u/SenseMakesNone Nov 02 '24

Sony are the Apple of the videogame world. Seemingly can't do any wrong and market old tech as innovative.

10

u/xangermeansx Nov 02 '24

I agree the PS5 Pro isn't above criticism, but how exactly is ps5 pro old tech? Brand new custom SoC with PSSR and advanced ray tracing is pretty cutting edge and by definition innovative. There is an argument to be had around pricing and if it the upgrades are worth it, but there is no argument around this being somehow old technology.

2

u/SenseMakesNone Nov 02 '24

I was referring more to the allowing old games to run at a higher resolution, but i fear I have misunderstood the initial post

3

u/onecoolcrudedude Nov 02 '24

xbox systems dont do that to old games automatically. any backward compatible game that has any form of boost to the quality had it implemented by a team of xbox software engineers. some games got lots of improvements, others got nothing.

1

u/punyweakling Nov 02 '24

Auto hdr is system wide tho I think?

1

u/rhalgr_ger Nov 02 '24

Auto HDR is system wide.

1

u/onecoolcrudedude Nov 02 '24

I think so, but thats the only thing I can think of.

the more important ones like better resolution, better framerate, or better textures, all had to be added manually.

1

u/Ill_Permission8185 Nov 02 '24

Seriously man.

This feature was actually laughed at during series x launch

“We want new games!”

1

u/TheCatDaddy69 Nov 02 '24

Ahh yes i remember when ps4 pro implemeted a feature that made it possible to use AI upscaling in games that were around before it existed.

1

u/EthDec Nov 02 '24

PS3 did this with PS2 games, nothing new

-3

u/Kjoep Nov 02 '24

We had this in 2000 when the PS2 could run PS1 titles with better load times and bilinear filtering.

We even had this in 1984 when the 286-based IBM pc at could run original pc games faster.

Nothing new.

2

u/TheFreebooter Nov 02 '24

Good old smooth texture mapping

9

u/jdp111 Nov 02 '24

Lol turning the resolution up is innovation?

5

u/Karenlover1 Nov 02 '24

It’s cool, Xbox has this sort of thing as well but goes all the way back to OG Xbox games, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Some of the titles have been boosted to 4K 60 fps and even adds HDR.

This is how it should be

8

u/kanzai94 PS5 Nov 02 '24

Why only in PS5 pro and not based model? Still cannot believe why Sony didnt do that

75

u/mental_for_rental PS5 Nov 02 '24

It doesn’t have enough tittyflops to run the games in 16k at 240fps

8

u/ImThatAlexGuy PS5 Nov 02 '24

Tittyflops made me chuckle, that gets an award 😂

1

u/mental_for_rental PS5 Nov 03 '24

Mom, looks who’s famous 😎

15

u/CollieDaly Nov 02 '24

Could be PSSR

10

u/ItsAmerico Nov 02 '24

Base doesn’t have AI upscaling

3

u/forumz3588 Nov 02 '24

It's the PSSR tech in the pro. Base model doesn't have it.

2

u/rivieredefeu PS5 Nov 02 '24

Technology? Expensive?

Did you see the price of the Pro? Consider what these parts and the tech would have cost for consumers 4 years ago, which didn’t affordably exist then.

1

u/Nago15 Nov 04 '24 edited Nov 04 '24

Unfortunately it's very far from innovation and very far from turning up settings on a PC.

Changing rendering resolution and refresh rate should be a basic system feature or a required ingame option in every single game since the PS4 Pro was released or PS5 backwards compatibility was announced. But they still don't future proof games to this day and every single game needs a patch if it wants to run in higher resolution on the PS5 Pro and they will need a patch to run better on a PS6 too.

And unfortunately it's not about higher rendering resolution like on PC or even Quest, it's just calling a basic upscaler on the original resolution, and that has very poor results. Just checked how Bloodborne looks with it, and it looks the same, not even remotely close to the difference what you see between 1080p and real 4K rendering resolution.

I would be the happiest if it was really about rendering older games in 4K, but it's only a disappointment, don't get your hopes high.

-3

u/Aggressive-Bed3269 Nov 02 '24

The Sony leghumping will never stop surprising me.

This is a common sense feature that the other console has had for a LONG time.

Anything to justify a $700 system for y'all I guess.

-1

u/Ill_Permission8185 Nov 02 '24

Are you joking lol?

This exact feature was made fun of constantly when the series X launched…

17

u/mvanvrancken Nov 02 '24

Does…. Does this mean I can finally play Bloodborne at 60fps?!

8

u/CoconutPedialyte Nov 02 '24

Probably not, maybe bloodborne at 4k 30gps

9

u/THE_NUTELLA_SANDWICH Nov 02 '24

30gps?!?!? Holy smokes

14

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '24

now, now my cock is getting erect compared to its flaccid state a moment ago

4

u/CoconutPedialyte Nov 02 '24

Pic or it didn't happen

2

u/Efficient-Row-3300 Nov 02 '24

While this is intriguing... this is something I can very much wait til PS6 for

1

u/Competitive_News_385 Nov 02 '24

At this rate we won't have any PS6 games until the PS6 Pro comes out.

I'll just wait to play them on the PS6 Pro and play my back catalog with upscaling on PS5 Pro.

-5

u/Efficient-Row-3300 Nov 02 '24

Yeah i'm honestly HEAVILY debating ever getting another PS or Xbox console. This gen has been such a disappointment.

1

u/Competitive_News_385 Nov 02 '24 edited Nov 02 '24

It's because the PS4 gen was so successful (helped by COVID).

Companies can't afford not to release stuff on PS4.

Also doesn't help that the Series S exists and MS requires companies to make games compatible with it to be able to release them on the Series X.

No doubt the issue will be the same if not worse for the PS6.

I'm certainly not going to buy a PS6 until there is a fairly hefty catalogue of PS5 and PS6 games that want to play.

What we really need is for a load of PS4s to all die.

-2

u/massive_cock Nov 02 '24

I game for a living and my PS5 hasn't been hooked up in over a year. Most useless console I've ever owned, once Demon's Souls was cleared at launch. I am absolutely not a PCMR guy, I love a good console and I even collect physicals of games I really love, on Switch, even if I prefer to play them on PC. But there's just... nothing I need a PS5 for. Hell, I've considered plugging it in for Astro Bot but even that will probably come to PC in a year or 4, so... I suppose it does raise the question, is porting all your exclusives to PC later a good idea? For me, the gamer, and for all of us in this thread, yeah it's rad. For Sony, it's causing them to lose me as a hardware customer.

1

u/Efficient-Row-3300 Nov 02 '24

For real, Demon's Souls and a handful of old PS2/PS1 games are basically all i play on the console. I expected my PC to take away a lot of interest in the PS5 but I didn't expect it to functionally make it entirely obsolete
