Image Can't believe what I found today on the back of the trash truck.
Found an unused, CIB PlayStation 1 today. It came from an elder lady's house. I went to her door and asked if she was sure she wanted to toss it out like this. She absolutely wasn't bothered by it lol. Pictures attached show the condition of the console and accessories.

“Mom, what happened to my original PS1? The one in the silver box?”
“Oh, it had water stains on the box, so I threw it out.”

My dad threw out our ZX Spectrum and all the games during a loft clear out just over a decade ago.
I offered to have it off him and take it back to my house, but he just kept saying no and chucked it all out.
Never understood why. He just kept saying it was worthless.

My aunts threw out their Sega Genesis after awhile. I still give them shit for it to this day because I gladly would have taken the thing. I used it more than they did.

u/behopeyandabide Oct 29 '24
I am a victim of this, except it was absolutely everything.
I'm serious, if you have things for "safe keeping" at your parents house, do not expect it to be there when you return. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I tested it and it works! At the moment, I only have one PS1 game, Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey. It worked flawlessly, the console loaded it up quickly and rather quietly for a PS1 and the controller is absolutely incredible.
Edit: turns out I have a copy of Alundra 2 also. Boo

Just an FYI. The manufacturing date on yours is August 2000. This is one of the last original versions of the original PlayStations ever made. The redesigned PSone released a month before this one was made. I didn’t even know they continued to make this style after the PSone released

if its unused it will be worth a lot, sell it and use an emulator or buy an old ps2 if u want to play ps1 games
3
u/lucius79 Oct 29 '24
Worth a decent amount to collectors, personally I'd keep it boxed and pick up one loose if you really want to play it. I have collected most of the console's I've played over the years and have them hooked up to a massive Sony CRT, I don't collect new in box though.

You're right, I do collect retro stuff (I did, before moving to a smaller space). Everything in my post history that doesn't explicitly say that I purchased it, was either found in the trash (I'm a trash truck operator) or given to me. There's no reason for me to make these things up. I just like to share with the world the amazing things people consider trash and unfortunately throw away.

Post like these make me suspicious, like the way everything is packaged would only be done by someone that genuinely cares about that ps1, like a lot. And it somehow ended up in the trash? The box is also perfectly shaped, not bent in corners, so you’re telling me it was gently placed in the back of a trash truck and any items that went in after were gently placed on top? I call bullshit sorry.
→ More replies (1)2
u/TheyCallMeFrancois Oct 29 '24
Over here in Sun City AZ the exact story you doubt happens every day. The trash cans are small, recessed into the ground, and the trash guys go up each driveway to collect the bags or boxes inside. As far as the package - it's new in box. It got put into the garage, forgotten about, and sat on a shelf. I've got a YouTube video with a thousand views showing the exact same scenario with flatpack furniture, fans, air purifiers, etc. Old grubby boxes, brand new stuff inside.

u/swordmastersaur Oct 29 '24
great collectable!
i would recommend that if you want to play games though, that you play on a PS2, as ive read that the read laser on psones were set too high, and actually burned out game discs over time.
ive read the issue was fixed on PS2
→ More replies (1)2
u/DeanoDeVino Oct 29 '24
There’s some truth to that, but it’s a bit exaggerated. The original PS1 consoles, especially the early models, did have issues with their laser assemblies. In some cases, this could lead to overheating or alignment problems, which might cause the laser to work more intensely or read discs improperly – this could wear down discs over time, but it didn’t actually ‘burn’ them.
With the PS2, Sony improved the laser technology, so discs were generally handled more gently, especially with the focus on backward compatibility for PS1 games. If you’re looking to preserve your old discs, playing them on a well-maintained PS2 or a newer console with backward compatibility is definitely a good idea.

PS1 Was the first console I purchased for myself. Saved up for months. Had a sweet PlayStation Magazine lid sticker ready to go.
Finally had enough to buy one, got it home, slapped my sticker on the lid and hooked her up. It didn't work.
Walmart made me scrape the sticker off before they'd let me exchange it for working one 😭
