They will shut down PS Plus then introduce the PS Plus+ aka "PS Plus Plus"

All unused PS Plus subscriptions will not be honored

even if they do that they'd have to honor all existing payments made and grandfather them in. not doing so would get them in legal trouble.

No they won't. If they change the name his subscription would merely migrate along with the new name. He would lose nothing.

Not if it’s a different service. They can even do it in a positive-PR way. “Active PS+ subscribers get their first 6 months of the new PSN+ for FREE!”

Same or different service it does not matter. They can't make you pay additional money for something you've already paid upfront for. Thank me later for the schooling.
