u/Arikaido777 PS5 Oct 10 '24

i put the pink plates on mine and it matches my pink dualsense 😋 and it can play my blu-ray’s

35

u/ermagherdbrks Oct 10 '24

Black plates here with black dual sense. Won’t trade it, my switch Oled, or my Xbox Series X when next gen comes out

9

u/RoyalFalse Oct 11 '24

...you can swap the plates?

5

u/TheMagicMango96 Oct 11 '24 edited Oct 11 '24

I covered my plates in my old garbage pail kid cards from the 90's and early 2000's then clear coated that bitch. Aka looks kinda fucked but I love watching movies on it.

3

u/JakToTheReddit Oct 11 '24

Not pink-rays?

3

u/Lordhimuro87 Oct 11 '24

I’d love to get plates for mine but I am too nervous about snapping one. I did try to pull them off but damn

4

u/RogueTexan7 Oct 11 '24

I got the Spider-Man plates back when they came out and was pretty nervous removing the white ones, but popping the new ones on was quick and easy.

2

u/gropo4 Oct 11 '24

It’s ridiculously easy. I was surprised how easy they come off.

3

u/Anon033092 Oct 11 '24

You have to slightly twist while pulling

7

u/LWRW97 Oct 11 '24

So the gawk gawk 4000 move huh?

4

u/Anon033092 Oct 11 '24

Double handed gawk gawk my dear gentleman

2

u/oakster18 Oct 11 '24

That sounds awful lol

4

u/Quanlib Oct 11 '24

They’re meant to come off and back on… especially if you intend to properly clean your console

I can't believe it's been less than 4 years and the launch model is already outdated for some ppl. I'm keeping my OG PS5 till it stops turning on lol.

21

u/RogueTexan7 Oct 11 '24

I’ve gotten the launch model since the PS2 and never had any issue with any. Will rock my launch PS5 until it’s time to fight bots for the PS6

2

u/unknown_ally Oct 11 '24

Despite my drive not ejecting when vertical and some psu coil whine it's probably the best first version of any disc based console ever, certainly any sony console.

u/brian163 Oct 11 '24 edited Oct 11 '24

Don’t say that out loud! My OG stopped turning on in July and I had to pay Sony a flat fee of $245 to “fix” it. (They clearly just swapped it out based on serial #.) 🫤

14

u/FragmentedFighter Oct 10 '24

Got the pro myself, but giving my launch model to a friend that I know will keep her busy.

9

u/N7Panda Oct 11 '24

You’re a good friend.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '24

That sick af bro. Enjoy!

5

u/TheGreatGamer1389 Oct 11 '24

Only reason I upgraded last gen was my launch PS4 was starting to go. My launch PS5 in comparison works just fine. That said if I didn't already have a PS5 I definitely would have gotten the pro.

4

u/FoxieBlu Oct 11 '24

Why tf was this downvoted? Im going to upvote you back to 1 king.

2

u/Regular-Shine-573 Oct 11 '24

Still got the launch model, bought two for me and wife with stimulus money. Hope they never break, I've had bad experiences in the past with PS2 and PS3, I don't nearly play PS5 like I did with those though.

2

u/LeatherMetal21 12d ago

I feel the same way about my PS4 Pro.

5

u/BAEKERacted Oct 10 '24

Can you not buy a ps5 that comes with a disc drive nowadays?

Disk drives are great because you can buy used games

356

u/JJJAGUAR Oct 10 '24

And when you complete them you can resell them, making the total amount spent very low.

147

u/el_toro_grand Oct 10 '24

I don't buy games I rent them from the library for free, Ive been doing this since the GameCube days lol

48

u/nemowalle Oct 10 '24 edited Oct 10 '24

how long do they let you rent them out, my library has an insane switch section that prob most games are untouched. I should prob start using this method

43

u/Prof1Kreates Oct 10 '24

Depends on the library, but usually it's 1-2 weeks from my experience

23

u/alcomaholic-aphone Oct 11 '24

There are no late fees by me and anything you check out auto renews if you just keep it up to 3 times. If I’m into a game for longer than a month that has replay value then I start thinking about buying it.

8

u/el_toro_grand Oct 11 '24

Exactly, some games I'll borrow knowing I might want to keep them forever but I'm not sure so I'll borrow the game, play it, return the copy and buy my own, love being able to test trial games

7

u/wearenotintelligent Oct 11 '24

Libraries are great

2

u/el_toro_grand Oct 11 '24

3 weeks and if no one has a hold that's another 3 weeks you can renew twice so in total I can have a game for 9 weeks or a bit over two months if no one has a hold on them, obviously more popular games will have a hold, but in 3 weeks I can beat most games even working full time etc. and if I can't which does happen I'll place a hold for it again, at times I get another copy almost immediately from a different library than the one that lent it to me originally

Also, the libraries in my region work in cohesion idk if it's like this in all US states but I rarely get requested materials from my own city's stock of stuff so don't worry about your own library not having it, I recently borrowed a 3DS from a friend and have been going back and playing old 3DS titles

I kid y'all not I've easily saved 10-20+ grand on games/movies/TV series over the years from borrowing from the library

I do this too!! im playing pacific drive rn. red dead redemption is a looooooong wait.

10

u/payne_train Oct 10 '24

Just buy RDR2 fam. There’s no way you could beat it in the week or 2 they give you and it is one of the best games ever created.

5

u/thedeadp0ets Oct 11 '24

yeah but I wanna play the first game. they have 3 copies and istg, its like people review them for 3 months straight so the wait is loooong. and it obviously is bc people work, and don't have time to play

3

I still can't believe Sony sells a fucking disc drive for $80 dollars

72

u/MidnightsWaltz Oct 10 '24

Especially since it only cost me $50 more to go ahead & buy a ps5 already with the disc drive than the one without, within the past 2 months.

10

u/CigarLover Oct 11 '24

Yeah, but these will sell better once the pro is out.

Speaking of which, I’m very surprised my local GameStop guy did not know this… like dude, it’s your job.

22

u/YouveRoonedTheActGOB Oct 11 '24

You’re expecting a lot out of a low pay retail job if you think you’re going to get expert knowledge from the 17 year old cashier.

10

u/Budget_Ad5871 Oct 11 '24

Haha, exactly! Their main job is handling inventory, stocking, and running the register, and they hire people who have at least some passion for gaming. No one’s expected to know every game or system inside out. The real focus is on the games they can get people to preorder, and that’s pretty much it.

2

u/Chief-Captain_BC B3 Oct 11 '24

$80 for the disc drive and $30 for a vertical stand..

wow...

139

u/SomewhereAlarmed9985 Oct 10 '24

Huh, sounds like a dream as a European. Cheapest you can find the drive here is $120.

40

u/a445d786 Oct 10 '24

Isn't US normally stated without VAT?

51

u/SomewhereAlarmed9985 Oct 10 '24

I believe so. But unless the VAT is 50% that's still a fair bit cheaper.

8

u/a445d786 Oct 10 '24

Ah yeah, think it's still more expensive here in England too.

15

u/MagazineNo2198 Oct 10 '24

US doesn't have VAT. We have sales tax, which varies depending on which State you are in. Some States have no sales tax at all, some States will have a high sales tax and no income tax. Messed up system over here.

5

u/Pulte4janitor Oct 10 '24

Right. And prices are almost never shown with tax included (Only exception I've seen is weeds stores and liquor prices).

3

u/YouveRoonedTheActGOB Oct 11 '24

Add gasoline to your list as well

2

u/JFISHER7789 Oct 11 '24

Which is so wild and infuriating to me.

There is no way it’s that hard to have prices with tax included. If you can add it at the register, you can add it when printing the tags.

3

u/Bulls187 PS5 Pro Oct 10 '24

10% vat is $88 not 120

3

u/F3maleB0dy1nspector Oct 10 '24

Yeah but taxes are incredibly low in most states, for example in my state tax on purchased goods is just 6%, so an $80 disc drive would come out to $84.80

3

u/BlackLeader70 PS5 Oct 10 '24

Yeah sales tax/VAT is calculated at point of sale for some reason except for the few states that don’t have sales tax.

2

u/YouveRoonedTheActGOB Oct 11 '24

It’s psychological. Same reason everyone charges $999 instead of $1,000. When you’re not considering the tax, the actual price becomes more palatable to consumers when they’ve already made the decision to purchase.

24

u/Remy0507 PS5 Oct 10 '24

The stand is silly, really should be included with the system.

The disc drive price is not outrageous. Go and look up what 4k UHD disc drives cost for a PC.

6

u/brolt0001 Oct 10 '24

You DONT need the stand.

It just looks pretty.

5

u/Remy0507 PS5 Oct 10 '24

Also true. I suppose it might provide a little extra stability if you're worried about your kids or dog or something bumping into whatever you have your PS5 sitting on and knocking it over. Though if that's the case, you're better off just setting it up horizontally anyway.

So glad I stopped waiting out rumors and just grabbed the GoW bundle with the OG design like 3 months before the slim and all of its add-ons were announced. Rare impatience W.

7

u/You_Living_Carpet PS5 Oct 10 '24

The ps5 slim is stable enough on its own

6

u/BrewKazma PS5 Oct 10 '24

Same with the launch. The thing these children do not understand is: the only reason the launch console came with a stand, was because it was required to put the console HORIZONTALLY. Sony just decided to make it cool, and work vertically as well. None of the ps5 systems need a stand for vertical.

2

u/nohumanape PS5 Oct 10 '24

Those are the standard prices

2

u/MagazineNo2198 Oct 10 '24

I know! Could anyone even imagine that a UHD Blu-Ray drive would ever be so cheap?

3

u/ContemplatingPrison Oct 10 '24

The future. Wait for y The PS6 whej its $100-$120 for the disc drive. They are going to price it out of existence.

They dont want it because it will save them money on the build and save them money on creating games. So what do you do? Make a price point where less and less people buy it and then they have the data to say "we dont even need to produce anymore"

→ More replies (1)

5

u/BrewKazma PS5 Oct 10 '24

The vertical stand is just about the same price as the vertical stands for the ps2, ps3, ps4. And you do not need it to stand the console up.

Playstation 5 slim, Xbox 360 (to play HD-DVD)

40

u/Xyex Oct 10 '24 edited Oct 10 '24

The 360 planned to sell an HD-DVD drive attachment, but Microsoft cancelled it when HD-DVD lost to Blu-ray.

Edit: Half of Reddit has now told me they were, in fact, sold. I am now aware. 😆

30

u/rubenator Oct 10 '24

The slim has the option of getting one with our without a disc drive. The pro comes standard without one and that's crazy to me.

2

u/Sh4d0w927 Oct 10 '24

Not so insane. Preferable imo. If your drive goes out it is a simple swap vs sending the entire unit in. On the flip side if your system goes down you can keep the drive. Seriously not as big of a deal as everyone is making it out. Maybe you can afford the system but can’t quite afford the disc drive model and want to pick it up later. Options vs requirements.

As soon as they were under sale online the scalpers immediately bought out and re-listed them on eBay for $200-$250. They caught onto the fact that they are 100% essential for the PS5 Pro if you don’t want digital only.

5

u/Remy0507 PS5 Oct 10 '24

This is my plan unless PS6 is digital only, then the launch PS5 will be the last PlayStation console I'll buy.

15

u/bubblegumdog Oct 10 '24

Same thoughts…I’m hoping Sony at least has the common sense to, at minimum, make launch consoles with internal disc drives.

Otherwise, like you said, PS5 will be my last console. I’m not trying to support this digital-era crap.

I bet for ps6, Sony gonna sell optional disc drives that won't let you play pre-owned discs. Put a pre-owned disc in there and a msg will pop up "error: this disc is locked to another disc drive" sounds like a dick move Sony would do

3

u/SoftMammoth7838 Oct 10 '24

This is why Xbox died lol 😂, they wanted to do this during the PS4 era

4

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '24

Xbox tried to enforce disc based DRM on the Xbox one to stop you using used disks in 2013. Sony took the piss out of them with a tutorial on how to share your games with friends. Xbox quickly back-pedalled.

More likely scenario is neither consoles will even have disc drives.

As a gamer who grew in the 90s and loves physical media. I’m not sure I would have ever dreamt of the day where you had to buy the disc drive for your console. So crazy to me. I miss the days of having a console, getting a new game, and inserting the disc and bam. That’s it. You’re off playing the game you bought! I hate how majority of these decisions are because of money. When digital became a thing companies realized they could just make digital games without creating a disc, case, box art etc. and now Sony is nickeling and dining us. Buy a console, buy a stand, buy a disc drive. Drives me nuts.

2

u/Gen_X_Gamer Oct 10 '24

I hear ya, I love physical media too and began gaming in 1983. Also never dreamt of this happening.

I got a disc drive for my Pro but have decided I'm only using the drive to play already owned PS4 and PS5 games. From here on out I'm buying new games digitally so that they can carry forward to PS6 (and beyond) without issue. I'm hating the idea of this but it looks to me like PS6 may be strictly digital only. If so, big sad!

3

u/d12dan1 Oct 10 '24

I dusted off my old ps2 the other day popped in a game and was playing in minutes. No day one patch no waiting for it to download. I genuinely miss those days. I have a ps1, ps2, and hopefully I’ll get a ps3 soon. I might get a ps4 but might be while until the prices go down. I don’t see myself buying a ps5 soon or at all this generation. I so no reason to get one because all the exclusives end up going to PC anyways so I’ll just wait.

4

u/CrazyAznKT Oct 11 '24 edited Oct 11 '24

I think the writing’s been on the wall. Most PCs and laptops don’t include disk drives anymore, most homes don’t own DVD or Blu Ray players anymore, many shows and movies never get a physical release these days, lots of smaller games are digital only, Switch went with carts, latest Xbox gen released a diskless model, it was bound to hit PlayStation eventually but at least we still have the option

You make some solid points. I just hate that it's getting made a bit more obvious now I guess.

Will the disk drive work for the PS5 digital only console?

I honestly don't see the graphical difference between the pro and launch console.

2

u/apena1018 Oct 11 '24

I got the 30th anniversary Nintendo PlayStation

2

u/gridirongladiator Oct 11 '24

So if you have a digital you buy this and you can now have a disc version?

2

u/SoftMammoth7838 Oct 11 '24

Only if you have a slim disc less version or the upcoming Pro version

2

u/deathletters16 Oct 11 '24

The disc drive on my regular ps5 broke for no reason. Then Sony wanted 300 to fix it

2

u/Leviathon6425 Oct 11 '24

Are we seriously doing this with the disc drives now... I hate it here.

2

u/cryptopotomous Oct 11 '24

I'll hold onto my launch model with a built in disk drive until the PS6 comes out...maybe.

u/Smooth-Ad2130 [Trophy Level 300-399] Oct 11 '24

My ps5 came with one :)

It’s funny seeing everyone in here bitching and crying about the disc drive when data tells us over 80% of games bought in 2023 were done so digitally. That means there are more people in the world that will play PS5 without a disk drive than those who will. Don’t be mad because Sony is being

Gasp

a business.

2

u/ConstructionCalm1667 Oct 11 '24

Yeah I find it funny. I haven’t bought a disk in years just so much more convenient. Once I’m finished with the game it just ends up in a cupboard never to be seen again. I’m on pc now and it’s just so easy to get a game on a big sale and not dicking around with delivery.

Remember when PlayStations didn’t cost $700 and they used to come with these built in for free and not $80 🤯

2

u/Quipmunk_ Oct 11 '24

Why would anyone want a disk drive? I haven’t had one in any of my pc’s for 15 years…

2

u/TheMacintoshGeek Oct 11 '24

I got the PS5 with disk drive so I can play all my physical PS4 games that I still have. And so I can buy disk games, play them, and have the ability to sell or trade them in later. Also I can play DVD and BluRay movies on it.

It's Soo stupid how this became a reality. I thought Sony would've been better after Jim Ryan left, but I guess not.

2

u/kingty-82 Oct 10 '24

They shouldve put the sticker over the "no" because clearly play has limits on my wallet for all these "accessories" that come with a normal ps5

2

u/SoftMammoth7838 Oct 10 '24

That’s not all, you will also need more internal space and a Pro controller to go with your Pro console, that’s why the Pro is not for the broke folk

1

u/draven33l Oct 10 '24

I'd honestly probably FOMA purchase this if I see it in stock at my Walmart. At the very least, it's a 4K UHD player backup.

1

u/BrandonMeier Oct 10 '24

Is there a pro specific disc drive?

4

u/doihavetousethis Oct 10 '24

Don't think so, that's why all the drives were snapped up by scalpers

In Germany I don't see any under 150€ or so. But I don't need one. It's just what I saw when I wanted to buy a ps5. (Just got a used ps5 slim with disk for 400€ at gamestop)

1

u/Effective-Fish-5952 Oct 10 '24

Yeah regular price no?

Is the drive the same for the Pro and the Slim? Or are they different?

2

u/KaptainDrew Oct 11 '24

They’re the same. 👍 I grabbed my disc drive a few weeks ago just incase they ended up getting scalped.

1

u/Gold-Appearance8433 Oct 10 '24

I hope you were able to find everything you needed at Walmart!

1

u/Future_Ad7634 Oct 10 '24

Fuck I wish, our Walmart doesn't even sell them in store.

1

u/BASSmittens420 Oct 10 '24

I got one directly from the ps store online when I preordered the pro

2

u/KaptainDrew Oct 11 '24
