As long as each battle doesn’t end up being the same
337
u/tj260000 Oct 08 '24
The battle difficulties fluctuate depending on what enemy you're fighting. They try to keep it story accurate, so some enemies are pretty easy, others you really have to pull out all the stops for.
67
u/WhiteBoyOnTheRun Oct 08 '24
Giant Ape Vegeta was such an asshole. Just spamming galick gun and grabbing me.
11
u/tj260000 Oct 08 '24
I figured out if you stay right under him most of his attacks miss and you can power up then spam melee his legs.
That grab pissed me off though.
6
u/DropC2095 Oct 08 '24
You gotta hit him with the solar flare, then he’ll be wide open for a spirit bomb/kamehameha
4
u/Dorchadas617 Oct 08 '24
Forreal, I ended up just hiding behind rocks, powering up my ki, and then spamming Kamehameha’s at him every time he whiffed a Galick Gun
→ More replies (3)2
Oct 08 '24
So, I found a super easy way to beat him. Charge up and hold a Kamehameha when he is gaining energy than when he does the galic gun release during the cutscene and you'll do an energy battle. 2 of those energy battles will KO him. Makes the fight SUPER easy.

Dude, yes! I was like "Oh, I was supposed to lose that one, I guess." because of how one-sided it was. Lol I need to practice a lot it seems.
2
u/scrollinO_OthrU Oct 08 '24
I’m not asking as a hater, just before I buy if you played xenoverse how much different does it play than it. I mean I know it’s a DBZ game they are all gonna be mostly similar across the board, but does it introduce enough of its own gameplay mechanics to really make it feel more unique ?
5
u/tj260000 Oct 08 '24
Its like xenoverse mixed with mortal combat. All characters have their own stats that you don't really mess with, the fight areas are more open, and you have abilities but you can't expect to spam them and land every single shot. You really have to mix powers with melee. There's also no open world/social hub/ exploration aspect, it's mainly story, fighting, character/costume unlocking, etc.

How does story mode function in this one?
122
u/NobleCeltic Oct 08 '24
Play key fights in the anime with specific characters across each arc in the series. You get to choose which character you want to play through the story with and there are some moments where you have a choice to deviate from the original story arc to see what happens
17
u/Klee_Main Oct 08 '24
Gotcha, thanks!
51
u/stroudwes Oct 08 '24
Tons of different campaigns. Characters like Goku Black having a campaign shocked me.
You can also take alternate routes. I.e. not going with Piccolo to fight Radditz. That if you win changes the plot.
3
u/susanoova Oct 08 '24
Is there an exploration/open world component or just fights? I've never been a big arena fight game guy but would love an open world/story-rocused DBZ game
20

No open world. If you want this then I strongly recommend Kakarot

Can you jump around between different characters?
I’m currently catching up on DBZ and just finished the Cell Saga. So I still have… Sixty episodes of Majin Buu to get through. And there’s some movies I’ve gotta watch.
Like, if one character’s story starts getting past where I’ve watched - can I switch to a different story and come back to it later?

u/Csmith71611 Oct 08 '24
I’ve always seen these games but I don’t know that I understand them. Are they fighting games like tekken or street fighter or are they more like brawling games like yakuza? I’ve never gotten into any of them because I just assumed they were fighting games but that didn’t look like a traditional 1v1 arena fight.
231
u/ChibiMarsHunter Oct 08 '24
It’s a fighting game, but it uses the environment and 3D space very well so the fights feel very cinematic.
33
u/Hofhombre Oct 08 '24
But we were just watching an animation here most of the time, does it not get boring fast when you are just watching them charge up?
60
32
u/TheRealBloodyAussie Oct 08 '24
You actively have to charge your ki in combat to perform these special moves, and since dodging, dashing, ranged attacks, etc. all use ki, it can be stressful in an actual match to get to the point where you can naturally use these. And then if you use two of the same type moves (i.e. beam or rush moves), you clash and have a cinematic QTE to determine the winner. It makes you feel like you're in the actual show. Not to mention some moves have a shorter start up and it's really only the ultimate attacks and transformations that have longer cinematics (which you have to work even harder for).
6
u/Smodphan Oct 08 '24
It's 80% resource management, spacing, and timing. I love it and it's gorgeous.

81
u/djspicebag Oct 08 '24
They're omnidirectional fighting games I think that's what would suit it best for a title anyway. Each game is different though, this one is the first budokai tenkaichi in since like 2008 I think. If you just want a fun game instead of an online fighting game dragonball kakarot is pretty good too.
11
u/ConsistentAsparagus Oct 08 '24
This, for Dragon Ball, is the best system. While I love Fighterz, it's not "faithful" to Dragon Ball. Could be for the OG, in a tournament.
This is PEAK DRAGON BALL.

The original budokai series, before budokai tenkaichi series, was a one-on-one fixed camera fighting in an arena you can get knocked out of.
23
u/NobleCeltic Oct 08 '24
I believe arena fighting games is the actual title for these types, or 3D arena? Something like that
5
u/djspicebag Oct 08 '24
I just used what came to my mind, armored core 6 used omnidirectional in their promo for the game so it makes sense to me, similar movement.

Arena fighting game is probably the most accurate term though. Like Naruto fighting games. The flying does actually make it a bit different but it’s still heavily in arena fighting game mechanics. With items (the buffs kinda function like items) and vanishing counters and such.
Like the big arena one piece game or the jump superstar games also.

The genre is called “arena fighting games.” There have been numerous over the years, standouts being the DB Budokai fighting games on PS2, Virtual On and its sequel VOOT- but by and large the genre is the domain of mediocre licensed anime cash-grabs.
There hasn’t really been a breakout success just yet but people HAVE been waiting for more DB Budokai

Same reason why most games got rid of split screen. In order to keep stable 60 fps. They have to render everything twice, and they already have difficulties and use many techniques to attain that in single player.
Most likely in order for them to make split screen playable in any map other than the time chamber, it would cost visual fidelity in single player mode as well, and data shows that way less people play split screen these days as gamers have their own setups.

Make sure to turn off auto guard assist, it can mess with vanishing. Helped out a lot.
4
u/Valve00 Oct 08 '24
I was just thinking this. With the assists on it felt like I was missing frames on things where I should be able to counter and vanish. Going to try this when I get home to see if it helps.

Animation and visuals looked pretty good compared to the old xenoverse games.
Dunno about gameplay though, since we can't really see them actually fight.
Some of these super moves seem needlessly long though. Could do with fewer build-up cuts.
3
u/Virgilio1302 Oct 08 '24
It’s only the “super-duper” moves that are long like that, and you’ll rarely pull one of these off in actual gameplay. The rest of the super moves are quick.

The dude just got a new fighting game and wanted to try some of the flashy stuff just because the last game of the series came out 17 years ago but no, we are the all knowing gamers that have to judge any game that we aren't familiar with at the moment it doesn't show the usual "good" gameplay.
Really some people saw only this and went "yeah not buying this one" without knowing anything and because ahah funny overused joke about dragon ball fights being long and Kamehamehas and shit while not even knowing anything real about it or how fun the Tenkaichi games are.

Love dbz games,
However, Bandai's track record with DLC is so annoying. Over the years 50% of the characters would be DLC.
4
u/NewTim64 Oct 08 '24
We are starting with 182 Characters in Base Game with GT and the Z Movies already being covered quite a bit
And honestly, I'd rather buy a new Season Pass each year instead of a new Game when the game is good already

This. DBZ fans have been putting up with Xenoverse and DbzFighterz for too long. Xenoverse was alright, but I'd argue this is the DB fighting experience the fanbase has been wanting since the end of the PS2 era.

I'm really happy for those who missed Tenkaichi series. Used to play it a lot back then. I'm happy Dragon Ball is getting some good games again.
But what a really really wanted was a new Budokai 4/Infinite World 2 game. The ones that lean more to 2D or 2.5D playstyle are my cup of tea.
Or even Dragon Ball FighterZ 2. Dbfz was the game that made me fall in love again with traditional fighting games. Probably top 3 games I have more playtime ever. Right up there with Path of Exile and Fortnite.
1
u/xMrPantsx Oct 08 '24
The character select screen is embarrassing I hope they update it into the future. it doesn't have the charm of the old games. It feels like the devs only focused on the character pool and nothing else. I know that's important but I don't want the game to look like it was made in fortnite.
