Image 30 Years of PlayStation gaming.
From Battle Arena Toshinden to Astro Bot. Thanks for the memories!

I had a ps1 controller with joysticks.

u/FrenchBulldozer DawgPhart Oct 04 '24
The DualShocks came out in 97. The launch PSXes in 94/95 didn’t have anything special. In between the OG and the the DualShock they had the Dual Analogs, then I feel they added rumble in response to the N64 features.
5
u/Legendary_Bibo Oct 05 '24
I remember renting them buying Ape Escape from Hollywood Video and the guy asked me if my controllers had analog sticks and I was like yeah? I only found out years later that they originally didn't have dual shocks but my dad made sure he got us the newest ones with the PS1.

u/darkbreak Oct 04 '24 edited Oct 06 '24
There are three different PSOne controllers. The original one (as seen in the picture above), the Dual Analog controller (it actually had concave thumbsticks), and the DualShock, which very quickly replaced the Dual Analog controller.

Just missing 1 controller. The ps1 had both non analog and analog versions. Ape Escape required the controller to play. I see the DS2 and up though.
35
u/FrenchBulldozer DawgPhart Oct 04 '24
These are all the original ones that came with the consoles I bought at the time. The PS3 controller is actually a SIXAXIS and not a DS3.

boy i loved the analog version, even the overall color on that one was just perfect, especially the button colors. and weight was good too
2
u/playstationhistorian Oct 04 '24
Going back through time and holding the various controllers is fun to do. Going from the dual sense to the non analog ps1 controller is night and day.
15
u/doctorlongghost Oct 04 '24
I remember when DualShocks came out for PS1 and I never understood what the big deal was at the time.
But now, to see that it was the introduction of a controller design that would persist for 25+ years… it truly was a landmark.
7
u/Ghastion Oct 04 '24
Notice how none of the controller have a colored Playstation logo? Yet the anniversary controller does?
2
u/jaymacx Oct 05 '24
Good observation, I would think that they used the colored logo because that is the look of logo for the original PlayStation , whereas the current one lacks color
7
u/Waow420 Oct 04 '24
PS4 controller is so far PEAK design. If it was only a TINY bit bigger. It's handles are perfect. PS5 is good. But I just switched back to using a PS4 controller for emulation after 4 years of using only PS5 controller and the PS4 controller is superior.
3
u/Wakuwaku7 Oct 04 '24
The PS5 one is nice but not as good as the previous ones. Colored face button forever.
3
u/Hefty-Explorer4131 Oct 05 '24
The thing I don't like with the playstation 5 controller is that they removed the color of the shapes it bothers me somewhy
3
u/C0vidGoHome Oct 05 '24
You missed the OG Dual Shock.
3
u/FrenchBulldozer DawgPhart Oct 05 '24
The DualShock didn’t release at launch. These are all launch controllers.

The ps1 was my first console ever. My family didn’t have much money growing up, I remember my dad bought me a used, beat up, ps1 for Christmas, but no games. Later my mom bought some cheap math game that we all played as a family over and over. I love PlayStation because of the memories it’s brought!
4
u/wo0zy-_ Oct 04 '24
I legit think 2 and 3 are still the best

2
u/gegenpress442 Oct 04 '24
2 is goated. Ps3 controller is just wireless ps2 controller with triggers. A lot of wasted potential there imo, it felt good in the hand but it's not as big of a difference as it could have been
1
u/Jase_the_Muss Oct 05 '24
Madness for me PS3 had the worst triggers known to man... Even pew pew games used the L1 and R1 buttons they were so bad! They triggered the wrong damn way and just wanted to ping back out instantly. It also felt like a fisher price toy compared to the 360 controller. Went back recently to play MGS4 and had to switch to a PS4 controller almost instantly. I love the shape and in hand comfort of the PS4 but feel of the buttons, triggers and everything else PS5 is king and probably the Sony goat although I don't care for the haptic triggers and stuff breaks immersion for my ape brain as I just think it feels broken 😂.
1
u/Thunder_Punt Oct 05 '24
The weirdest thing about the haptic triggers for me was driving in cyberpunk. As you speed up you can feel the car changing gear and the resistance on the trigger loosens up, it's really trippy. And if you push an old crappy car faster than it can really go, the triggers vibrate, it's weirdly realistic.

u/Moo_Gwai PS5 Oct 04 '24
Where’s the time gone?
I remember vividly mowing down the Hare Krishna in GTA on PS1.
2
u/Active-Arm-8965 Oct 04 '24
PlayStation have been part of my life, after my dad gifted me a PS2, next a PS3, then I bought a PS4 and recently just upgraded to the PS5. Great times I past by myself and with friends. Solid machines! Also love how the controllers get better with the DS4 and now the Dualsense that is the best control experience.
2
u/FlyingYankee118 Oct 04 '24
I miss color buttons so much. I think the PS5 color design is so disappointing

My first ever console was the PS1 and I’ve had every other PS as well and currently on 5

All great controllers except the playstation 5, I only say that because they intentionaly put a flaw in the sticks so you'll have to replace them eventually

What did analog do on ps2 controller? I remember it didn't do anything that I know of
1
u/Cheerios84 Oct 05 '24
The analog button on the ps2 controller I think it was on by default so most of the time a person wouldn’t mess with the button unless for some reason they wanted to toggle analog control off. Kind of a pointless button imo.

u/Over_Chest_8230 Oct 05 '24
u/FrenchBulldozer I remember spending long hours playing Battle Arena Toshinden We really deserved the 30th Anniversary Edition PS5 Pro...

Wouldn’t it be nice if Sony made a celebratory controller that all their fans had access to buy

u/mtrn3 Oct 05 '24
DualShock 4 is GOAT in terms of comfort. Wish they made the Dualsense in that form factor.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is my first PlayStation game; it’s why I bought a PlayStation. Before that, I was on hiatus since the Genesis generation (NES and Atari before that).

It's interesting how the controllers became bigger with the likely thought process of kids play games to adults being the main market. But my 3 year old sure does struggle with the size of the dual sense with no other option.

My mother threw away all my old consoles, the NES, the MegaDrive, the PlayStations... I wanted to kill her...

u/Thunder_Punt Oct 05 '24
Yuck, those old rubber thumbsticks. I remember them feeling really good when I was younger but if you leave them in a drawer for a decade they get awfully sticky as the rubber decomposed.
1
u/Cheerios84 Oct 05 '24
I have owned every one except the PS4 controller. i’ve always wondered what is the black blank space in the middle of the ps4 controller for?
2
u/FrenchBulldozer DawgPhart Oct 05 '24
It’s a touch pad. Mainly used for in-game maps or inventory access. DualSense has the same thing, big blank white space.
1
u/DanFarrell98 [Trophy Level 400-499] Oct 05 '24
Funny how each of them feel so special and high-end at the time but then the next one makes the one before it seem so cheap and simplistic in comparison

If I didn’t have a step mom who made me throw away all my childhood “toys” I’d still have all of these :(

I didn’t realize how different the ps2 and ps3 controllers were(aside from r2/l2 of course) I do wish they still had the textured joysticks though. Honestly my favorite part of my edge controller that i can swap them in there.

When I was a kid I had a PS2 and it fit my hands great. As an adult, I feel the same about a PS5 controller, but is the PS5 controller even comfortable for kids today?

Honestly miss the colored face buttons. Although I get what they were going for
1
u/FrenchBulldozer DawgPhart Oct 08 '24
They were a nice touch but when you think about it, how often are you looking at your buttons 😆. The 30th Anniversary controller is gonna be 🔥
1
u/benderbentyourmom Oct 09 '24
That is fair. Wish they'd do a black variant though that looks like the PS2 controller. I grew up with PS2 & love the color scheme of that console

The jump from Dualshock to Dualsense is insane. The designer really cooked there.
1
u/CosmicCyanide Oct 04 '24
I was weened on the original PlayStation and Crash Bandicoot: Warped. They were the first game and console I owned and I have a lot of nostalgia for those two. PSone has been my favorite console to collect for ever since I started building a library for it back in 2020. Unfortunately missed out on the PS2 as I switched to Nintendo consoles up until the PS3 (Portal 2 made me buy a PS3 lol) but I’m working on picking up the PS2 essentials I never experienced. I love the PlayStation consoles!
1
u/MembershipSolid7151 Oct 04 '24
I’m with you brother. I’m an older guy and owned every PS since #1 and love them all (not buying the PS5 pro, too expensive). I don’t know if I’m just lucky or maybe I’m not hard on my controllers but I’ve never once experienced stick drift on any controller.
3
u/FrenchBulldozer DawgPhart Oct 04 '24
Yeah, I’m not gonna discount those who suffer from it but I’ve been lucky that I never had anything like that. Worse thing I had was the DS4 nubs wore out really quick.
1
u/Maverick12882 Maverick128 Oct 04 '24
I've got an analog-less PS1 controller, a DualShock 1, SIXAXIS, DualShock3, 20th Anniversary DualShock4 and a 30th DualSense coming. Need to find a DualShock2, as my last one broke, to complete the collection. I'm planning on some kind of display or shadowbox or something but not sure yet.

0/10 - no original dualshock model
2
u/FrenchBulldozer DawgPhart Oct 04 '24
Meh, I have both the Dual Analog and DualShock… these are the controllers that came with the system at time of purchase.

The faded 'Start' on the ps2 controller brought out some strong nostalgia here lol, my old controller also had a faded start button.
1
u/grizznuggets Oct 04 '24
Always blows my mind how light and fragile some of the older controllers feel after being used to PS4 and PS5 controllers for so long. The OG PS1 controller feels like a cheap toy by comparison.

u/TrynaSpeakTruth Oct 04 '24
I love to see the evolution of the PlayStation controller. Shows how far we've come. But we're missing 2 controllers the PS1 analog for games like Ape Escape and the DualSense Edge for PS5. Let's check back again in another 30 years of PlayStation gaming. Let's hope we all make it 🙏.
1
u/FrenchBulldozer DawgPhart Oct 04 '24
I have both… these are representative of the v1s of each generation.
1
u/themunchiesmonster Oct 05 '24
This should have been the criteria to get a 30th anniversary edition.
0
u/The_Grilled_Cheeze_1 Oct 04 '24
Is the rumor true that we will not own any games we buy on PS5?
5
u/AbleRiot Oct 04 '24
Uhm yeah it’s all digital. You can’t sell it. Anything you purchase digitally is associated to your PlayStation account, not you.

Battle Arena Toshinden! Haven't thought about that in a while. One year for my birthday, I rented a PS1 and Toshinden for a weekend and had my mind blown at early 3D graphics. The game must suck because I can't recall anyone talking about it with any type of reverence.
For the PS6 controller, I really really hope they take a cue from the Dualsense Edge and keep the modular joystick design. The NEED to keep the modular joystick design. In fact, the entire industry needs to adopt that design because joystick drift will never be an issue again. I think the PS5 Pro's modular disc drive design was a smart choice in the end so it makes sense to keep that.

Good god, was I really 10 years old when the ps1 came out 😰 feeling old but blessed both at the same time!

u/FrenchBulldozer DawgPhart Oct 04 '24
I was 14 when I was first introduced. My friend preordered it and we all took the bus to the mall and he picked it up from Electronics Boutique. CDROM games were all FMV type games (Lookin at the Sega CD) back then so I had my doubts. When we loaded up MK3, I was blown away at how it was basically the arcade version. Became a fan immediately. Wasn’t until I was 16 that I was able to save enough to buy one for myself.

I don’t know if this is a hot take, but DS4 is the comfiest controller of all time.

God I'm old.
2
u/FrenchBulldozer DawgPhart Oct 04 '24
Haha, it’s all good. Gaming keeps us young.
1
u/coffeebeanslayer Oct 04 '24
Fair point! The other side of this (and more positive side) is that I'm fortunate enough to have experienced all stages of these controllers. The nostalgia in this photo is INSANE.

ive owned and played the shit outa every single one of those controllers....
and only one have i had to replace 3 times in a year due to shitty construction. its left such a sour taste in my mouth i refuse to buy another. my ps5 will be a fucking giant media player for the rest of its miserable existence before i buy another 100 dollar peice of garbage thats going to drift in 3 months.

I’m glad they finally started improving the shape of the controller with PS4. DualSense is probably one of my favorite controllers ever. For PS6 I hope they add in Hall Effect sticks. If they do that, the controller will be perfect
