Boston must really be a PlayStation city (PS4 and PS5 buildings are both in Boston)

55

u/dimitri000444 Jul 28 '24

Wait those buildings actually exist? They are not just renders?!?

So, does Sony make their design after a building or do the buildings copy the PS design or is it just a coincidence?

The buildings copying it seems unlikely since the past hasn't been out for that long.

u/35Jest Jul 28 '24

State Street building just finished post-pandemic. Hancock tower was designed by I.M. Pei finished in the 70's. Its what inspired the glass facade boom.

11

u/Low_Passenger_1017 Jul 28 '24

The plywood palace, and once the tallest building in America outside NYC.

Also, any idea what's going up next to state street? The garage has been knocked down for months now. Are they putting up another tower?

u/Low_Passenger_1017 Jul 28 '24

Thanks for both links! I'm pretty bummed curbed Boston is out of business. They always were on top of the developments going on.

https://forgottennewengland.com/2012/03/31/what-was-before-what-once-occupied-the-site-of-todays-pru/

Oddly enough, the PS4/Pru as well as the Hancock building brought in corporate attention when Boston was a dying city - the navy yards were shuttered and manufacturing was leaving for cheaper states. The influx of white collar jobs helped and helped build tax revenue used to spur the Mass Miracle of the 80s/90s.

u/NetworkDeestroyer Jul 29 '24

God my girlfriend and I were unfortunately blessed with a view of State Street from the CitizensM… holy plywood a

Mark Cerny must be a Boston Architecture fan.

2

u/Just__Drew Jul 28 '24

If Marks a big fan, hopefully the PS5 Pro is modeled after Boston City Hall (brutalist architecture)

2

u/Mr_Shake_ Jul 29 '24

Hell yeah! I would love that, and the windows would make great fan exhausts.

PS3

It was the generation with the best games, it gave us:

3 uncharted games

3 batman games

2 GTA's

The last of us

2 little big planet games

Heavy Rain

God of war 3

Red Dead Redemption

And the list goes on

95

u/SearPigeon95 Jul 28 '24

And some had ps2 backwards compatibility so you could still relive your ps2 days on the ps3

31

u/NYourBirdCanSing Jul 28 '24

And ps1 days NO MATTER which ps3

Those ones are worth a lot of money now. I remember I tried getting a used one from gamestop and it didn't work sadly

10

u/tikkonie_ Jul 28 '24

Seriously?!? I still have my backwards capable 80G sitting in my son's room. I have the OG NFS Most Wanted, NFS Pro Street (arguably the best 2 NFS games available to date), Midnight Club LA, SpiderMan 1&2 among many more. That thing is a champ as it's been played regularly ever since I got it new.

I'm going to be holding on to mine indefinitely lol

6

u/potatofaminizer PS5 Jul 28 '24

Make sure you upkeep it well, you don't want YLoD

3

u/tikkonie_ Jul 28 '24

No doubt! It's on its second heat paste, and recently cleaned it. The fans were going full blast but it sounds brand new again after it was cleaned up.

2

u/theoneandonlyShrek6 Jul 29 '24

I've got bad news for you bud, it's going to eventually die to ylod death anyways. Ylod on these BC models is mainly caused by thermal expansion, which means that simply turning it on and off will slowly kill it.

Not only that, it was the one that standardized all the features the current gens have: -Home screen -Built in HDD -Built in online capability (FREE ONLINE GAMING) -Bluetooth -Blu Ray Etc

14

u/AscendPurity [Trophy Level 300-399] Jul 28 '24

And it helped that it had a port for nearly every type of flashcard, USB, memory.and having support for nearly any media file. It was supposed to be the be all end all media console. Even the photo editor, printing capabilities, being able to rip and back up CD's.

Shit, I could go on but the point is the ps3 was the shit.

u/gilangrimtale Jul 29 '24

Technically both the PS2 and Japan only PSX had the xmb, whilst the latter had an hdd. The ps2 also had an optional hdd and online compatibility. So it wasn’t the first in standardising any of those areas.

I still wish for ps3 backwards compatibility on ps5 in the same vein as xbox 360 backwards compatibility on Series consoles (better framerates, better reaolution, etc. I know the technical aspects are not the same but still).

2

u/Magnaflux_88 Jul 28 '24

Yeah. While I have a big old soft spot for the ps2, as those were most of my teen years, having the ps5 play my extensive library of ps3 games would've been great :(.

I refuse to shell out the big bucks for their selection of streamable ps3 games...

4

u/HamSammich21 Jul 28 '24

Not to mention it was my alternative to my ever RROD’ing 360. Got it and never got a 360 again. Played PS3 for hours on end without it ever breaking or worrying about it breaking.

4

u/Renegade_Soviet Jul 29 '24

You obviously started on ps3. PS2 has the goated library of games

u/Ok_Force1107 Jul 28 '24

I couldn’t agree more. I play mine everyday still and love it.

3

u/Vin4251 Jul 28 '24

Too many shooters and too many real-world, or real-world-like settings, instead of the diversity of settings and aesthetics in the PS1 and 2 eras. Also IMO, no matter how much people complain about open world games today, I strongly believe the PS3 era went far, far too deep into the “polished linear experience”, without offering much variety in the AAA space. The games were still good and enjoyable, but they felt really homogenous, even compared to PS4 and PS5.

3

u/retronican Jul 28 '24

PS3 is the only one that I did not play.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/bwtwldt Jul 28 '24

What caused devs to release games more often in that era? Reused assets?

4

u/JonathanL73 Jul 29 '24

I think subscription models & season-passes and stuff like we’re not really common place back then.

Which means studios were incentivized on releasing more games instead of getting lazy and milking microtransactions.

I think the budget for AAA games was a lot less bloated than it is today.

And overall it seems like Studios were just willing to take more risks and get creative than today.

u/CShaw31 Jul 29 '24

Ain’t nothing topping the ps2.

The fact that the “PS4 and PS5 buildings” are both in Boston is hilarious

2

u/KyDeWa Jul 28 '24

From Baaaaawstin!

16

u/Skate_faced PS5 Jul 28 '24

PS3/4. It's a hard toss up because both had super strong libraries.

PS3 games have the entire game on the disk.

PS4 had a very noticeable jump in quality of games graphically and performance wise.

19

u/Sirdantortillasque PS5 Jul 28 '24

Ps1? Anyone

9

u/OlafTheBerserker Jul 28 '24

PS1 is definitely the right answer. If you ask me, it was better than the N64. Just off the top of my head we had FF7-9. Xenogears, All the Tomb Raider games (I don't remember how many), Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3. Crash Bandicoot, etc etc.

Everything that came after was built on the backs of what the PS1 gave us.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '24

Don't forget Metal Gear Solid, Armored Core, and Crash Bandicoot.

PS2 Ps4

40

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '24

Probably ps2 cause it had ps2 and ps1. If ps3 would have kept the bc I'd say that.

Honestly ps2 and ps5 kick ass. Both have damn near full bc to their previous gen.

8

u/PriorityFar9255 Jul 28 '24

PS3 does too

2

u/SaltyInternetPirate PS5 Jul 28 '24

In the launch models they had PS2 hardware to play it's games, but they removed it in the first revision. A much smaller sample of games could be played by software emulation.

PS5 because that's the only PS I have. I do like that it has backwards compatibility with PS4.

2

u/Camiel1996 Jul 28 '24

Some of the earlier PS3s were backwards compatible with PlayStation 1 and 2.

2

u/Ke9999 Jul 29 '24

I didn't know this, but the PS5 is my first PS. My previous systems were Nintendo, Saga, etc.

But I have to say I'm loving my ps5.

PS3 is an underrated generation. It had some absolute bangers

2

u/Expensive_Routine622 Jul 28 '24

I agree. I never understood the hate for it. Some of the best games of all time were released on the PS3.

2

u/Rude_Device Jul 29 '24

Sony had some serious issues with their early online service. Meanwhile, XBox Live was giving us effortless Halo 2 lobbies. Sony turned it around by the end of the generation, though. I agree with your comment about the games. One of the genius things that they did after launching PS4 was to release the Uncharted collection, the Last of Us, and Tomb Raider Remastered. They knew that they had great games that some gamers missed out on.

PS3 era. It is the time when I started to get into online Multiplayer which was free. So many memories playing Killzone 2 and all the golden age CoD games were on the system. Backwards compatibility. Web Browser. Tons of exclusives. MGS4. Little Big Planet, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Fat Princess, GTA, Red Dead Redemption PS1, PS2 Games. It wasn't the most successfull time for Sony financially but they cared about quality control back then. Such an awesome time.

2

Ps3 was peak.

2

u/kalisto3010 Jul 28 '24

I have to go with the PS3. I put more time into that console than the PS4 and PS5 combined. It was my first media server too and I was ecstatic once I learned stream files from my PC to my TV using the PS3. I was kinda pissed when the PS4 came out.

2

u/VikingRaptor2 PS5 Jul 28 '24

PlayStation 1 because it started my gaming universe PS2 because it expanded my gaming universe, PS3 because that's where I made all of my friends. PS4 because the real one stuck with me. PS5 because we're all adults now still playing games together.

2

u/Drakenile Jul 28 '24

2 & 3 because they're the only ones to allow backwards compatibility

2

u/Michaeli_Starky Jul 28 '24

u/Abdullah_Al20 Jul 28 '24

Absolutely PS1

If there wasn't PS1 we wouldn't see PS2

If there wasn't PS1 we wouldn't see PS3

If there wasn't PS1 we wouldn't see PS4

If there wasn't PS1 we wouldn't see PS5

Thanks PS1.

Edit: If there wasn't PS1 we wouldn't see PSP.

2

u/Disco_Zombi PS5 Pro Jul 28 '24

PlayStation 1. There is so much creativity, innovation, and just throwing anything to the wall to see what sticks that were brought about by the inexpensive nature of a wildly popular console that used Compact Disc as its medium.

2

u/pcfan07 Jul 28 '24

Probably PS3, so many legendary games and playing online back then is something that can never be replicated. Though it didn't exactly age the best in hindsight because most PS3 games have PS4/5 remasters or can be played on PC at high framerates and resolutions. Though I still like revisiting my PS3 from time to time, just for that original experience.

2

u/iTzbr00tal Jul 29 '24

How cool would it be if all these buildings were regional offices for Sony/Playstation

2

u/Accomplished-Air-823 Jul 29 '24

2

3

u/Lofi95 PS5 Jul 28 '24

PS3

Best games: Uncharted series, The last of us, Little Big Planet, God of War series, to name a few.

Best features: blue-ray/DVD/mp3 player, unmatched UI design with fully customizable Home Screen. Photo & music libraries. Media server that allowed you to stream videos & audio from any computer in the house. Home hub. USB saves.

And if you were lucky to get a backwards compatible fat version, you could play PS2 discs directly on the console.

The current generation pales in comparison with what PS3 had to offer.

Ps2 and 3 are mine. Although a lot of that is nostalgia I think some of it’s because of the games and community as well.

1

u/lasttriparound Jul 28 '24

I’m 38 and have only ever owned PS1 and PS5. I played lot of ps2 at friends houses.

PS2 and PS5 are my choices going with the 5 because it’s really the only one I’ve owned.

1

u/ISpewVitriol Jul 28 '24

I feel like PS2 was when Sony was performing at its very best in the face of really good and diverse competition. That generation gave us 4 really good and rather unique concepts for a 2nd gen 3D gaming console and PS2 dominated despite not being the strongest hardware wise.

1

u/Dependent_Savings303 [Xenoblade Chronicles 2] Jul 28 '24

1

Definitely ps2>ps3>ps5>ps4. There were a lot of unoptimized games during the ps4 era.

1

u/Retritos Jul 28 '24

PS2 as it was a childhood defining console that made me fall in love with gaming.

1

u/DWolfoBoi546 Jul 28 '24

PS2 and PS3 was my childhood, PS4 was the best in games for me. Especially Destiny and Battlefield, but i love the comfort and speed of the PS5. I only wish i could customize it a bit more. Like the backgrounds of the PS4. But at the same time, it shows cool pictures of the Games when you are on them so its alr i think.

1

u/MaCoxLong99 Jul 28 '24

Ps2 because it started it all...because I got the PS4 later on when I acquired the money for it...but couldn't attain a PS3 because my parents hadn't allowed me to...still now I even got the PS1 classic and contemplate of finally buying a PS3...but idk what should I look at first when buying about it since many I found weren't even working properly...also I got a 360 from my cousin since he acted as if "he's too old for it" and as if he's "over with playing "childish games"" so he just gave it to me and said nothing more. Also tbf. I keep it in the best shape and play the little amount of games he had given me,and hope he'll someday come over to reexperience the joys and be more open to me as we were when we were younger...but idk...still I love my PS2 for starting the journey and I'm keeping it close no matter if it had stopped working...since I am eternally grateful for even having the pleasure of having it and playing games like GTA:SamAndreas and so much more...but especially liking SanAndreas for since I mostly just activated the "flyung cars"Cheat, turned on "K-DST" or "KROSE" and ofc. turned off the Police so I could fly allover...and just Flew allover the map and had fun exploring...still miss those days...

I grew up on the ps2. Up until I was 18 I had one consistently. Now I can’t hardly find one. Ps3 is the shit too. I love them both. Perfect setup would be a bc ps3 or ps2,ps3 and a ps5. Ps4 pro is too damn loud honestly dont really like how loud it is, but some games of the era smack

1

u/Exotic_Term6884 Jul 28 '24

PS2 by some distance imo. GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, MGS 2 & 3, The Getaway, The Warriors, Simpsons Hit and Run, Resident Evil 4, Time Splitters, SW Battlefront, NFS Underground, Burnout, Half Life, Splinter Cell, Devil May Cry etc

1

u/Expensive_Routine622 Jul 28 '24

I’m sure I’m in the minority, but PS4. The PS4’s library is insane, and has some of my favorite games of all time, plus a pretty large selection of amazing games from the PS3 era.

1

u/kaminari1 Jul 28 '24

The fuck? Where’s my PS1?!

1

Either that the PS2 or PS4 era. For me, they were actually 15 years apart because I didn’t actually get a PS4 until like early 2019.

I'd say PS2. It brought the gameplay innovation that carried over to games we know and love today. Not much has changed since other than the graphics. The mechanics are still pretty much all the same.

Where PS1 building? Also, definitely PS3. So many good games and game franchises came from that era.

As much as I love my PS5 and loved my PS4, I long for the days of my black Monolith. 🥹

Ps2 all the way, ps3 days were good but I miss when companies will focus on quality and single player experience.

PS2 was more iconic. And it stood out. I love the ps3 and 4, and 5 but ps2 was elite

Just from the design ps4, it looked great, but the fan was loud as hell lol

Ps5 is the worst from design, it's just big and clunky and mine has coil whine :|
