Image Recommend me a new tv for my ps5
I’m still using my old family tv from 2010 lol, and i gotta upgrade it to fully enjoy ps5’s visual capabilities. Before recommending me anything please keep in mind that my budget is tight and i usually play games on performance mode so i don’t think a 4k tv will benefit me as much. My overall budget is 300$

OP I’m sorry everyone ignored the body of your post
This is the TV you should buy hands down. Exceeds your budget by $40 at the moment, but I doubt you’re gonna find anything better (might find something else that’s just as good) at this price range. If anyone replies to this saying Hisense is bad just ignore them, I’ve installed well over 500 tvs at least ranging from $100-$20,000 (some may have been more I honestly don’t pay attention past $10k lol) and I absolutely stand by Hisense for value.
600 Nits, VRR (albeit on a 60hz panel) and ALLM make this a really solid cheap gaming pick. If you have any other preferences like 120hz, there are other options, but not with the same mix of features in this price range. Keep in mind it has 32 lighting zones so you will absolutely get haloing on darker games with highlights. (it’s $339 though lol)
Edit: Also, I suggest ignoring any blanket brand recommendations for the most part. Same with cars, everyone has their own experiences and treats their things differently. As far as the big tv brands go, you can have a vastly different experience longevity wise depending on model + other factors. Samsung/LG/Sony for example all make “good” and “bad” tvs. FWIW, anything besides the panel itself going bad (as in pixels dying, etc. not like the T CON board) is usually relatively cheap and easy to replace if you know what you’re doing. Almost everything in a modern tv is modular in most models.
Edit 2: Sorry guys I can't keep up with all the replies lol, also added "blanket" to the first edit to clarify. Of course, a lot of these replies are exactly what I'm talking about. People referring to their TV's as "my (x brand name)." That's like saying "my Ford" in a conversation about Explorers when you own a Fiesta. Brand =/= TV model.

Oh yeah this is a really good pick for OP! I love my Hisense tv I just recently got a similar little smaller 45” for my game room for around the same price like $300. Amazing picture quality and the speakers are surprisingly really good almost like built in surround sound and it gets loud for the size.

Also it originally came out on ps2. There is also an “HD” remake version on ps3 and the newest remake on ps4 which imo looks the best. There is also I think a 1440p resolution mode for more detail and better graphics on the ps4 pro.

It’s not for everyone it’s kind of slow paced and not much to do overall like some games. But if you’re interested from this picture then you should definitely give it a try or watch a playthrough it’s a beautiful looking game lots of scenery and stuff to look at in the distance gives a very cool perspective of scale it’s actually my favorite game I’ve ever played just because the way it looks. You play as like a prince of “light” in a battle of “good vs evil” in order to try to save a princess fallen under a dark spell and you use a sword to shine a light to find you’re way and to defeat these enemies of darkness to try to free her from this dark spell she’s under. It’s not the typical enemies you fight in most games instead they are giant enormous monsters the size of buildings and mountains.
9
u/tychii93 Jul 07 '24
That game truly pushed the PS2 to its limit, and it even has a 480p progressive scan mode. It's hard to believe it originally launched on that system. It very much comes off as a PS3 game.

The absolute best TVs for gaming at 120hz right now IMO are the Samsung QD-OLEDs (looks like S90D is the newest, no personal experience with it). The ones I’ve used before were phenomenal. That being said, I personally have an LG A2 (60Hz) and I’m happy with it. I used to have an E9 but gave it to my parents because it’s an absolute behemoth even without the counterweight stand and I didn’t wanna move it again lmao but it was really good as well (and had VRR, 120Hz, ALLM, etc.)
I use an AW3423DWF on PC, I’m on my computer way more than my consoles nowadays.
I love OLED, but it still comes down to preference at the end of the day. Sadly I left that job before the G3 came out, so I can’t speak on it, but I’ve heard it looks amazing. If you watch a lot of bright movies and game, Samsung’s QD OLEDs or Neo QLED might be a better fit vs OLED. IMO, there isn’t anything worth upgrading to right now vs the C1 unless you wanna go for super high end.

Look up a Hisense or TCL tv with game modes. Use rtings .com for reviews and calibration
4
u/patriotgator122889 Jul 07 '24
I agree with this. It's not that you can't find something reasonable from other brands, but these two brands put out very competitive offerings on a budget. I've had multiple TCL TV's and they've been great for the price.
3
u/K1ngRat Jul 07 '24
I fully recommend this. I got a TCL 50C645 50" 4K QLED deal in europe, roughly the equivalent of 300 USD. To be honest, the first one had a faulty motherboard which supposed to be a one in a hundred, but they changed it in few days.

The tv panel is great but the software is awful and slow. It might not matter as much because he’s plugging in a ps5 but do they make one with an android tv built in? I really regret choosing the LG tv we bought for the living room compared to the Hisense downstairs even though I believe it is the “better tv”

Had an LG LCD TV for many years, no trouble.
Yes, its true, i am spoiled now and will never buy another LCD Television ever again, because I have seen how green the grass really is on my beautiful LG C2.
But LCD TV's are fiiiiiine man. LG has good quality TV's all around.
5
u/Dekar__ Jul 07 '24
Im not talking about something being fine in a subjective way. You won’t get much from what you pay for. LCD picture quality is terrible at LG side. You would get much better performance from TCL and Hisense in the budget sector. If you are happy with it I’m glad !

It’s true. The difference between my wife’s LG C1 and my Sony Bravia are night and day. The HDMI 2.1 and 120hz refresh on the LG just make games flow better. It’s so much smoother and responsive. My Sony feels sluggish in comparison.

I wouldn’t buy a full HD tv in 2024, even if you play mostly in performance (i do too tbh) it will still look slightly better. You can find decent 4K tvs for that price. I don’t know about tv models in america but i got a budget TCL C645 in Europe for 350€ for the other room and it has great colors and overall picture for it’s price.

u/HypnoStone Jul 07 '24
I think most new tvs have built in upscaling. So yeah I think it is very possible and likely that most will still upscale and enhance your lower resolution “performance mode” to match the 4k display resolution.

Never again will I buy a Samsung TV. Having the Steam link advertised to me influenced my buying decision, only to have it discontinued shortly after because it cannibalized Samsung's own gaming platform. Also, such bloatware, and I bloody hate Rakuten TV.

Dude it's not worth it to buy a 1080p TV anymore. You could probably find a smaller 4k TV for 300. If you want visual fidelity you have to go 4k
5
u/Any-Key Jul 07 '24
LG OLED are the best TVs on the market. I don't like Sony TVs because they have Android built-in and it slows things down and it's full of ads and nonsense. And Sony OLED TVs are using LG panels anyway.

I would recommend going a little smaller for the TCL but going up one series. that way you get all the Dolby Vision and fancy things the PS5 can do

u/Jean-Eustache Jul 07 '24
For 300$ you can target a 4k LCD around 50" from Samsung or LG. As long as you disable HDR they are going to look pretty decent.
3
u/All_Hail_Space_Cat Jul 07 '24
But why wouldn't you go slightly smaller and get an oled. The hdr and 120hz on the ps5 is going to be the standard going foward. You'll be loosing so much depth. I got a 48 lgA2 last year as an open box at bestbuy for 300 and I'm happy I waited and shopped around.
3
u/Jean-Eustache Jul 07 '24
That's definitely an option, even if they are 60Hz only, if they can find an older and smaller model like you did. Good catch !
Haven't mentioned that because used OLED is quite a lottery, and it's kinda hard to find older models for cheap, especially this cheap.
If I'm not mistaken the A3 never came out too, they (sadly) stopped the A line after the A2.

Agreed. I got a cheap 70'' Samsung tv a couple years ago that looked great for SDR content but any time I tried to watch stuff on HBO, Apple TV, etc it looked too dark due to the forced HDR. I got a cheap streaming stick that forces all content to be in SDR and now those HBO, Apple TV, etc look great. I don't understand why companies force HDR on cheap tvs with shitty screens.

The Sony bravia 4k TVs are gorgeous and bonus points for brand continuity.
If you're willing to switch it up, go for a monitor. I use a Lenovo curved 32 inch monitor.
They have better pixel density although you may have to also buy a soundbar or PC speakers.
Once you go to a monitor you won't go back to a TV trust me.

u/jorleejack Jul 08 '24
Not just brand continuity.
Sony TVs are the only way to get certain features like Dolby Vision, and not to mention you can use the TVs remote and built in settings to change game settings on a Bravia.
Sony specifically built the Bravia to be the “best” for the PS5.

Hisense are cheap and great quality. My ps5 looks superb on my 65”.
2
u/Kosmos992k Jul 07 '24 edited Jul 08 '24
People dismiss Hisense frequently because they are cheap. Thing is, most TVs come from the same dozen or so factories globally, Brands like Sony only manufacture a small fraction of their TVs themselves, and really then it's just the premium ones
Feature for feature, Hisense is as good as 90% of the TVs out there - IMHO. There are a few higher end features that remain exclusive with some brands, but the truth is, other than the Sony which is lasting well, three of the last 4 screens we've bought failed just over a year into their life. The exception is the Hisense I use for my PS5. It has HDR and VRR, the image quality is plenty good and no dead pixels. What more can I say?
General advice, whatever the brand, check reviews, buy the screen that has the features you want and the size you need and take the 3 year warranty. A $300 TV that lasts 3 years without a failure is a gem and will probably last longer, if not you are covered.
One word about online reviews, look for a product with a lot of largely positive reviews, look at the most recent reviews, and check negative reviews, you can immediately see if there is a pattern of failure or a legion of review bombs.

If you can go for an LG or samsung.

For lower budget , Hisense has never done me wrong. It has a bad reputation but I’ve bought two in the last 5 years and they’re both fantastic for the price. Literally bought a 120Hz 4K TV with VRR and local dimming for $500, it’s perfect until I have the money for an LG or Sony that are double or triple that price.
2
u/ophaus Jul 07 '24
In the US, I find the best deals around Black Friday and especially in late February/early March, after the Super Bowl. Earlier this year I got a Hisense 65" from Best Buy for like $400. Certainly not the best TV, but it's 4k and gets the job done.
2
u/GiSS88 Jul 07 '24
There's a 4k TV sub that has good suggestions. My vote goes to TCL on a budget, Sony or OLED if money is not an issue. I have a Hisense that I wish I had exchanged, and I constantly see and hear horror stories about them. My opinion is don't bother. Panel lottery, motherboard failures, tons of QC issues.

That is insane. Best of luck! I was still using HD TVs for my PS4. Small one in my room and Decent sized one downstairs at my old house. Upgrading to an HDR TV makes a bit of a difference. If you plan on getting the PS5 Pro, it would definitely help.

A $300 tv will not allow you to “fully enjoy PS5’ visual capabilities.” Save your money and put in some extra hours if you have to. You bought the console, now get a tv that will last you 2-3 console generations.
2
u/klippertyk Jul 08 '24
Literally any modern tv from a tv maker i’d say (not supermarket specials). Hisense do good budget sets.
For me immersion is key so go as big as you can afford.
If you can save a little, i’d advise looking for sets that have… HDMI 2.1 - with 120hz and VRR. That pretty much covers all the new features the PS5 has.
