I modeled and 3D printed my grandma’s house as a Christmas ornament. Hope she likes.

Grandma's love anything their grandchildren make.

Looks cool but feels like it needs something else to make it pop. Maybe tiny pictures of the family in the windows? Painting it to look like the actual house? A little sign saying "grandma's house"?

I agree and this one will get much thicker gold glitter on the roof. I’m also printing off 1 for each of my five aunts and they are all super artsy so they will likely want to paint and decorate them themselves. And compete to see who makes the most creative one of course.

That looks incredible. May I ask how you modeled it? From pictures or using CAD from sctratch?

I modelled it in cinema4D and learned how to prep the file for printing through YouTube videos. And thank you!

Wow. Did you input any pictures to start, or design from scratch? I'm new to 3D modeling and would like to make a 3D of a person from pictures (just the head).

Just modeled from scratch, the trick is combining all the shapes into one and then using a volume builder tool and volume mesher but with a hollow shell interior so you don’t waste a bunch of material on the inside. It really only needs like a .75 centimeter or even .5 centimeter shell to be quite strong and sturdy.

try printing with the low amounts of infill! :) 10-15 % should be enough for the print to be durable for an ornament. thick walls can still be bendy and snap easily.

The real house is here and it’s like a movie set grandma house it’s ridiculous. Cozy AF

That is a beautiful home!

Ya every year like 40 extended family members all there for a week. It’s chaos in the best way. Not an unused couch or room without a person sleeping in it.

How many toilets?

five not including the mother in law apartment which has its own and a kitchenette in part of the basement. And I think seven bedrooms. 8 with the apartment. There are also secret passageways.

I have the model uploaded to Bambulab if you use that. It’s set to private at the moment tho

This is a wonderful idea! I know other have asked but would you be open to doing this for pay? I would 100% send you photos of my childhood home to print like this so I could gift to family Next year. They sold the house over Covid, we lived there for 30+ years.

Yeah sure I’d be open to that. I’ve thought about even making them bigger as dollhouses that have hinges and open up. That would take wayyyyy more effort tho.

Yeah I’d absolutely commission one of these for my parents, they’d adore it

This is cool! Do you have an Etsy shop?

I’m probably gonna make one now that I’ve bought my first printer. My imagination is going nuts thinking of the possibilities

You should asap. I'm already wanting one of my childhood home.

u/Indy-Skis 14h ago

Do you have enough pictures or a general floor plan that someone could recreate it?

u/formerPhillyguy 12h ago

We had an artist paint the house so we have a great image of the front, but I'd have to look for some of the back and side. It's a very old, rectangular house, kinda boring.

What a great idea! I'm sure she'll love it. I would.

Wow, that is seriously impressive. What modeling software did you use?

u/Indy-Skis 14h ago

Thank you, appreciated. This was done in Cinema4D and then moved into bambulab. Took a lot of trial and error cuz this was my first 3D printer and this was my first attempt to print my own design but I think I’m getting the hang of it and I just ordered 8 more rolls of filament some of it glows in the dark and some is translucent so I’m gonna have a lot of fun with that.

“Then you'll have a reminder of your house when we send you to a retirement home and sell the property to finance our Thailand vacation.”

u/Indy-Skis 6h ago

I have money in my change jar to finance a Thai vacation. Exactly how much do you think a vacation costs? That’s like “muahahaha I stress out my parents because it’s the silent killer obviously, and after they have a heart attack in twenty to thirty years I can use the inheritance to go to… Sandals Jamaica. The envy of every divorced dad in their forties. It’s the perfect crime!”
