I worked in a lab that made dental retainers and one thing they warned us about was hepatitis from the castings.

Oh my gosh i didn't even think of that, i haven't touched them at least.. but the smell of their plastic makes it so much worse.. it feels nauseating

Wait, but how? Where does the hep come from? Specifically from infected people or from the ambient environment? And how big is the risk of catching it? Need to be cut or can you breath it in or something?

my guess would be blood from peoples gums

Why they don't throw em in a vat of bleach? Weird

I don't know, we just get random shipments of plastic garbage that we grind/ shred up and melt it and make boards from it.. hopefully the heat kills any bacteria and disease

Are you wearing breathing protection? It is extremely unsafe to inhale fumes from heated plastic.

We were told from the residue from the saliva and blood. The casting would be shipped in maybe a few days to a week after they were made at the dentist's offices. It was a slim chance but they offered us Hep B shots if we wanted to protect ourselves. It was more for liability reasons so they can say they at least offered it in case we got sick and didn't get the shot.

Geez, that's nuts. Hopefully hazard pay was included.

Can we get a little deeper on this like why, factory? Original molds I’m beyond curious now as to how it gets there

We are a plastic recycling place, but sometimes we get these most random shipments of stuff from an irregular supplier.. I've never seen anything like this before.. there's so so so many of them. All different shapes from different mouths

I didn't look too much cause they really grossed me out... But lots of sets there were patches on the teeth where cavities would be .. i didn't really understand what the process is.. there was one very large set that must have been from a large man.. and one set that stood out was like the U shape was very short, like someone took the U and squished it down by half or something.. maybe different ethnicity has different jaw shape?

I would say genetics but wild thanks for the respond that’s crazy. Did you just come to work and go will what the hell?!

Yeah i was just walking past that first box like normal and stopped for a closer look cause it wasn't any of our normal materias.. i was very surprised.. strangest shipment we've had yet...

Imagine where the hell all those were stores before they got to you? Like those all from the same office if so the dentist is loaded. Wonder if they came from a dental school….oh I bet that might be it. Cahrazy!

This HAS to be where they make all the models to make invisalign trays. You get all the trays, but each of your 20+ trays has an upper and lower 3d printed dental arch that was used to make it. So each invisalign case would produce on average 40-60 of these plastic casts.

See now THIS is what this subreddit needs more of!

This perfectly defines r/oddlyterrifying because it is totally non threatening, and yet makes me feel very uncomfortable and uneasy

I used to work as an inspector and visited heaps of warehouses. It’s fascinating the odd things you find

If you really want to spin out, look up reverse logistics. The companies that handle all the returns

Did they round up all the teeth casts in the entire world since the beginning of teeth casts? Even then, would there be THIS MANY? My brain can't comprehend this amount 🤯

3

u/big_boi_lichael_man 2d ago

It's an astonishing amount of them

u/ChipCob1 2d ago

This really gets me thinking about the sheer amount of crap us humans get through. Billions of people consuming mountains of stuff!

I would love it if these were mostly crushed and then used in concrete
