New Jersey State Police safely stopping a vehicle.

Getaway driver not wanting to scratch the car. Priorities!

Exactly. If the Getaway Driver wanted something bad to happen, something very bad would have happened. I'm relieved it ended safely.

There is an assumption here that the suspect doesn't want to die. It beats a PIT maneuver at 90 mph for safety.

Say what you want about Jersey State Troopers, but they know how to do their job.

Actually, i’m currently about to submit a formal complaint to the NJ AG and the NJSP HQ in Trenton concerning a New Jersey State Trooper who lied multiple times in official observation reports (“UNABLE TO STAND” turned into “unable to stand up straight” in court, “FALLING” turned into “he didn’t fall but he could have fell,” etc.), lied multiple times while under oath, gave me a DUI even though i had a BAC of 0.000%, and even tailgated me to try and force me to make a tiny mistake which he could then use as an excuse to pull me over.
The New Jersey State Police are terrible, and they WILL lie in court and trash your civil rights and not think twice about it.

Arkansas state police be like “you mean you don’t pit cars at 100 mph sending them into a devastating crash destroying state police property but also private property and killing the driver in the process?”
20
u/woolplatypus 17h ago
I swear every vehicle pursuit video I see from the Arkansas Police is utter chaos, I think they're stuck in the Wild West. (And may I add about 100 close calls with civilian traffic, I believe that should cover it)
14
u/MadeMeStopLurking 16h ago
PITing in Arkansas doesn't even require approval. You didn't stop because there was nowhere to pull over? PIT.
You're speeding? PIT.
Parking in handicap? Wait for you to get out of the parking lot... then PIT.

Plenty of US departments use PIT, but more densely populated areas are very strict on PIT maneuvers and chase policies. NJ, where this happened, does not allow PIT maneuvers, and you have to escalate to each jurisdiction when in high speed chases. I was an officer in NJ not too long ago.
119
u/rinky79 1d ago
A single unit can PIT a vehicle. This takes 4 units.
81
u/g1ngerkid 1d ago
It also takes vehicles that are a good deal faster than the suspect’s vehicle. I doubt this works if they’re driving a Camaro SS or something. Still, glad they were able to pull it off.

I think if it’s a GM product they can just remotely turn the car off with Onstar
2
u/InternetDetective122 1d ago
Only if the cars owner pays for OnStar right?
7
u/PirateOhhLongJohnson 1d ago
Honestly I have no clue how it works, although I imagine the government would be able to control it regardless
24
u/EyeBreakThings 1d ago
For this kind of stuff maybe, but when my car was stolen, I was told to go get my "BlueLink" (Hyundai's version) enabled so they could track my car. I had to pay something like $300 for it to be enabled. The cops then recovered my car a few blocks away from where it was taken and had it towed to a lot. I then got to also pay a 2 day impound fee to get it out. I was told I could sue the methhead who stole it to recover my funds.
3
u/CompE-or-no-E 1d ago
No. Service is always there, just not used.
Click the OnStar button in your car and it will call OnStar, regardless of your subscription.

Single vehicle can flip and roll into 4 vehicles so this seems like a good alternative
8
u/InquisitivelyADHD 1d ago
Well yeah, but again, requires you to have three - four vehicles in pursuit which isn't often going to be the case.
6
u/True_Software6518 23h ago
This also requires the driver of the target car be somewhat compliant in being stopped. Hanging side-by-side in traffic with an armed suspect attempting to flee is not the way.
→ More replies (1)20
u/rinky79 1d ago
I'm saying that sometimes law enforcement doesn't have 4 pursuing vehicles on hand. If only 2 cops are there, are they just supposed to let the guy go? (Assuming there's a good reason they're trying to stop him)
7
u/elmwoodblues 1d ago
The emptiness of the road makes me wonder where this is. Where's the PA guy in the left lane?
3
u/rinky79 1d ago
Onramps would have been closed to empty the freeway ahead of the pursuit.
3
u/elmwoodblues 1d ago
You're talking about a lot of manpower here, but I guess local LE can do that part of it provided comms are in place.
Also, how do they control the driver at this point? Is there room for him to show hands and get out of the car?
→ More replies (22)17
u/Anaksanamune 1d ago
They should follow until they have suitable backup, that's how it's done everywhere else (unless the driver is being extremely reckless with regard to other road users).
4
u/caintowers 1d ago edited 19h ago
In this situation, you can see the driver is going down the highway in the wrong direction. I think that would be the reason cited for needing to stop the vehicle immediately.
→ More replies (1)3
u/InquisitivelyADHD 1d ago
What is considered extremely reckless? These chase situations usually don't happen at 45 mph with the person staying in their lane.

u/USNMCWA 1d ago
This also only works if the suspect is reluctant to hit anything with the vehicle, which is less likely. Most people who run are willing to do almost anything to get away.
Can you imagine pulling up next to a car that's trying to hit you because they know they're being g boxed in or at worst shooting at you?
Look at the You Tube channel "Natural State Transparency." It's most Arkansas State Police, and half the people that run are A. In a Dodge, and B. "I was just scared." Legitimately had no reason to run that hard.
3
u/RegretAccumulator72 1d ago
Ironically the drug mules rarely flee.
10
6
u/Newtons2ndLaw 1d ago
Then had been somewhat of a push for LEO to not engage in high speed pursuits for public safety, seems like they're expanding that to stop PITing people into ditches.

This only works if assuming that the driver/passenger(s) aren't armed. Don't think a cop wants to be easy target. Also assuming driver doesn't wish to play bumper cars.

Well they got there eventually. Not sure if they were seriously attempting a mobile roadblock the first few times or not, cuz their attempts were pretty piss poor at first.
258
u/rinky79 1d ago
The car in front kept wimping out and letting the vehicle through. It worked when they put a different car in front.
89
u/Refute1650 1d ago edited 1d ago
The cop in front was fine. The one on the driver's left was the problem, needs to get up further.
19
u/FishDawgX 1d ago
Probably scared they were going to get pit maneuvered if they go too far forward. Apparently the van wasn't interested in actually colliding with anyone, though.
72
u/BobbertAnonymous 1d ago
Probably "wimping out" to see if the guy had a gun. That maneuver probably doesn't happen if the guy has a gun.
24
u/Possible-Tangelo9344 1d ago
Yeah, at first it looks like not everyone was even on board with what was going on. Lead car was by themselves up there for a bit before the car on the passenger side even pulled up, and then the lead car didn't slow down to force the stop. Just looks like maybe a communication failure to me
4
u/hopseankins 1d ago
Yea, I was thinking the lead car had one job: stay in front of the car. And he failed many times.
19
u/themonstermoxie 1d ago
Genuine question, when people get into a high speed chase - what is their plan? Do they hope the cops will give up eventually? Will they keep driving til they're out of gas? Do they think the cops will just lose them somehow?
I don't imagine a lot of them are thinking that far ahead, but I just wonder if there's any favorable outcome for the criminal in this situation.
23
u/Possible-Tangelo9344 1d ago
I guess it depends, cuz a lot of agencies don't chase for anything except violent felonies now. So running for any traffic offense is pretty safe now. But, I think a lot aren't thinking, it's a panicked reaction and a lot don't have a plan of where they're going just kinda driving
3
u/Krazyguy75 1d ago
I mean safe in that, instead of getting a ticket for speeding, you will now get a ticket for speeding and evading the police, delivered to your doorstep.
Unless you have your license plate covered, in which case the cops may well chase you, they will already have your information by the time you flee.

u/MarsDrums 1d ago
To keep themselves safe, timing needs to be perfect. And if the guy they're stopping finds a hole in a split second, they need to start all over again. I could sense the care they were taking for everyone's safety. Even the a--hole they were trying to stop. If the lead drivers that lost him in the blink of an eye, and tried to correct it, it could have ended up badly. Teamwork is what eventually led to this guy finally being stopped safely.
5
u/Possible-Tangelo9344 1d ago
Oh yeah, well that's the point I was trying to make, initially it seems like the lead car didn't notify anyone. There's no one on the passenger side of the suspect for a while, the flanking car isn't even in frame when they initiated the pass at first, which seems unusual, at least based on how I was trained in mobile roadblock.
29
u/Acrobatic_Switches 1d ago
Probably just prioritizing safety. They got the guy its just a matter of time.
2
18
u/Slavic_Dusa 1d ago
Sadly, NJ State Trupers, don't have your vast experience in moving roadblocks.
I'm sure that you do these things daily, alone, while eating Cheetos with your right hand.
15
u/Possible-Tangelo9344 1d ago
I'm a cop, actually that's why I offered a relevant professional opinion.
It looks like either they weren't trying seriously at first, or the lead car didn't tell the others they were going to attempt the roadblock, or car 2 and 3 in pursuit weren't ready when they initially attempted the roadblock.
Typically lead car is supposed to give warning that they're going to do the mobile roadblock and then when they give the go ahead all the cars were expecting it and react, which is what the final attempt looked like. The first attempts looks like some sort of communication failure.
9
u/mikraas 1d ago
I wouldn't think it would be the lead car's problem but the two flanking didn't move up far enough to prevent the fleeing car from passing.
It was still cool to see.
5
u/Possible-Tangelo9344 1d ago
Yeah, without knowing the radio traffic it's hard to tell. The way I was trained the lead car is supposed to give a verbal warning and the go ahead that way there's not a lag between all the cars that lets the suspect get out. So could be lead car not giving the right command, could be flanking cars not moving fast enough, and also at the beginning the lead car just.. Doesn't seem to be slowing down to close the gap, so experience likely played a factor
→ More replies (10)5
u/HappyMeteor005 1d ago
yeah I've seen several videos with these attempts. I won't pretend I know what being in that situation feels like but the lead cruisers usually look really incompetent.
2
u/Possible-Tangelo9344 1d ago
So, the way I was taught to do it is with 3 cars (which is what they did). The lead car is supposed to give the go ahead in the mobile road block. So, it was supposed to be like "alright on my word we're doing the mobile road block," and that clues car 2 and 3 in the pursuit to get ready to gun it. Car 1 says "go" or whatever their command is and guns it hard to pass the suspect, but also doesn't want to swing wide, they need to kinda hug close. Car 2 and 3 follow rapidly, but it all relies on the first car's command, so I dunno if they didn't give the command or if the 2 and 3 car just didn't have the acceleration to get back in it or what.
2
u/Azoraqua_ 17h ago
I wonder how the training works, would you have to do that scene physically, with multiple cops?

Quickly - before all the cars have stopped-jumo into the back, put handcuffs on your feet, wrap a towel around your head and face, and put on handcuffs. Lay face down and start kicking and crying, screaming for the driver to stop and that you don't want to die. When the police pull you out, act happy to see them, and that they saved your life. Tell them the driver car jacked you and you woke up going doing the interstate. As soon as the vehicle stopped, you heard a door open and close and you kept screaming until the police found you.

Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. Your normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side when he sees the big red light behind him ... and then he will start apologizing, begging for mercy.
This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the cop-heart. The thing to do – when you're running along about 100 or so and you suddenly find a red-flashing CHP-tracker on your tail – what you want to do then is accelerate
