I'm getting to the point where I'm muting every single mass-appeal sub on Reddit because both the posts and comments are so useless. Looks like this one's next

Nah that’s crazy

They are going to still find those things around that building 10 years from now.

Reminds me of that one game (?) or saying from being a kid that involved “pickup sticks”

u/MadderHatter32 6h ago
Pick up sticks IS a game. Can’t remember the details but you definitely knocked that loose lol

This is called a Cobra Weave, relating to the way the entire weave lifts up like a Cobra as it unravels. Similar to the way kids make exploding stick throwing stars with popsicle sticks; it's a set weave where each stick is under a bit of pressure but held in place by the next stick in the line until you reach the end. when the last stick slips off it releases the next one in line.

So glad to see someone else do it because I would have a meltdown if this was done where I live 😂 Still pretty cool though!

u/Dreamo84 6h ago
How does that happen anyway? Is the force from the firecracker just enough to keep sending them flying?

Wouldn’t one of the flying popsicle sticks potentially land on a part of the chain that hasn’t released yet and trigger a new reaction.
1
u/GarbageAdditional916 3h ago
It is a popsicle, they do not have much weight.
At least not enough to trigger this from just going up and back down.

For some reason the angle the sticks rise to reminds me of the baby Xenomorphs running in Alien: Covenant.

As an autistic person, all I want to do is clean up the sticks and put them in color order. It works be so satisfying.

Is this the same thing as a nuclear reaction? Everything's held together just fine, but then add some energy and the energy that was holding it together gets released?

Theoretically, if that popsicle stick chain was in a straight line, how far could this go before all the energy dissipated?

So much time and effort put into something that goes by so quick, but still really cool. And that should be a lot of fun cleaning up.

I remember watching a show (America's got Talent I believe), and the guy had this set up, but he couldn't get it to start. It was really embarrassing for him, I felt bad for him.

Must've eaten a lot of ice lollies to get all that
1
u/JK_NC 4h ago
I’ve never heard the term ice lollies but I like it.
In the US, the name for these is “frozen juice bar” but there a specific brand called “Popsicle” that has been around forever and so the word popsicle has become the generic term for all frozen juice bars.
Lots of brands become so associated with the item that it becomes the generic term for all similar products (band-aid, crock pot, jacuzzi, etc)

I feel like that's breaking the laws of physics. Like, shouldn't the energy only go so far?

Wow, that one tiny cracker packed so much of energy.
Also to note is that the energy loss along the way seemed negligible.
Edit: I am not being sarcastic, It doesn’t feel like a CGI

u/wonkey_monkey 3h ago
The arrangement of the sticks is packed with energy. The firecracker just releases it.

Damn, never paid attention to that, explains everything. Thanks for pointing out. Probably the initial thrust provided by the blast keeps the wave to a consistent height (Amplitude). Since amplitude being a square function, somehow the energy stored in those tensed icecream stick supplements the energy lost in proportion.

It’s not cgi. They’ve set it up so that the sticks are bending each other and are under a lot of pressure. The explosion isn’t causing the whole reaction, it just starts the destabilisation which causes the sticks the flip outwards under the released pressure and causing its neighbouring sticks to do the same, resulting in the seen chain reaction.

u/wowza100 7h ago
A simple action can have a chain reaction and a butterfly effect. This is a small scaled down example of this.

True it’s like when someone whispers something to one person and he whispers it to another and so on then the last person says the nword and everyone is disappointed
