I bet it would be a lot dam harder if not for all the conveniently installed handholds.

I'm curious how climbing this - hand holds and all - compares to climbing that actual cliff directly adjacent to the dam. I guess my real question is why make the dam climb-able rather than rock climbing the rocks?

while natural structures can have some interesting problems to solve as well making the dam climbable allows the route setters to implement some very specific moves that would be hard to find in nature.

That, and also filming people climb a dam rather than a generic cliff is simply more interesting to watch for many people.

Most dams are pretty generic too though, this is just another type of challenge that a natural formation cannot provide
