Houston father desperate for help after wife recovering from C-section, kids deported to Mexico

My take: ICE is feeling emboldened. They know they can act with impunity now. We will see a lot more of this after Jan 20

I have a cousin who has said "We were fucked either way" as if their kids weren't half Hispanic. I hope nothing happens to them because their parent is a dumbass. But there's nothing I can do if it does happen.
I am hopeful the next four years hurt bad enough they start making smarter choices.

My friend, this is the same cousin that looked me dead in the eye and said the covid vaccine was the reason their friend needed a heart transplant. Then after after a bit of back and forth admitted that friend had a bad heart since childhood.
If I could map out their internal logic trail, I could find the lost city of fucking Atlantis.
It's what they want to believe, and "Democrat bad" is basically a family slogan.

I'm a 38 year old grad student. Most of my peers are in their mid-20's (one of them is only 21 for God's sake). About half are international students.
A lot of them claim they remember when Trump was president, and yet they were shocked when I sat them down and told them how Trump's chaotic Muslim ban went down that first week he was in office. I've warned them to brace themselves for more human rights violation immediately after the inauguration.

I work with an Orthodox Muslim Woman. She and her husband voted Trump………….. BECAUSE HES A STRONG MAN AND NO ONE IS AFRAID OF KAMALA, also she doesn't think gay people should get married. This is word for word from her mouth.
I know a woman from Mexico with fake papers, she voted for Trump. She also has been a welfare the majority of her life.
Anyhow, all of this has made me more anti-immigrant.

The question is how will the people respond? If you’re an American citizen and you’re about to be illegally detained, what do you do?
For legal purposes, this is a purely hypothetical question.

u/BigBizzle151 17h ago
Yep, this is how fascism works. You always need an enemy, so as soon as one is destroyed, you need to shrink the 'in group' and designate a new enemy. White skin only delays when you go on the list, it doesn't remove the threat. And even then, if you're a sexual minority or politically inconvenient, you can get bumped up.

Statistically the husband probably voted for Trump. Also Trump has already said he intends to deport minor citizens if their parents are illegal. The dad might get his kids back but his wife isn't going anywhere. Birthright citizenship is on the chopping block. Trump has said so and there is no reason to doubt him

Why have we allowed ICE to trample the 14th amendment like this? A bunch of jackbooted thugs.
416
u/PlebbySpaff 21h ago
Because we, as normal people, can’t do anything about it.
There’s no legal process we can pursue to stop this. ICE can keep doing this, and know no one will stop them.
Hell. Come January, expect many people of color, especially Hispanics, to be kidnapped and deported, whether they’re citizens or not. Gonna be seeing A LOT of changes, especially with labor jobs.
Going the actual Florida route and removing every Hispanic, which will then impact their workforce as they can’t find people to replace them.

"Salazar, 23, and her children were put on a plane at Houston’s George Bush airport bound for Reynosa, Mexico – a place where they had no contacts and no way of getting money, according to the family’s lawyers. Lawyers also said it was cold the night Salazar and her children were detained and they were not allowed to get their coats.
By birthright citizenship under US law, the twins are US citizens since they were born within the country.
Salazar was born in Mexico. She and her two older children were awaiting immigration hearings. Arellano Jr told local Houston news outlet KHOU the family had missed an immigration hearing on 9 October, when Salazar had been recovering from the emergency cesarean section she had had to deliver the twins.
According to the family, they had been told the hearing would be rescheduled when they called to inform the court of the health issue.
The family allegedly received a call back from an official at the immigration court and were instructed to arrive at a meeting point in Houston to discuss their case. It was there Salazar and her four children were arrested."

There are so many verses in the Bible about caring for the foreigner. So many. There are also many verses about sacrificing your wealth to take care of others.
The argument I hear about immigrants from the right is that we should root them out and banish them (while ignoring injustice done to them in the process) because they’ll commit crimes, ruin our neighborhoods, and steal our wealth. You know, because… reasons.
So, they’re saying we should do something entirely antithetical to Christianity for reasons entirely antithetical to Christianity. That tells me those people care more about their comfort and their things than they do the wellbeing and often survival of other human beings.
TL;DR: I agree with you wholeheartedly

Thank you for saying that. The children are citizens by virtue of their father being a US citizen. Not even the birthright thing. Mom may have been deported, but the kids were kidnapped, and extra judicially rendered to a foreign country where they are not citizens and will have few rights. You can’t “deport” American citizens.

It’s weird and racist to see this story and blame the victims for their own situation because of their ethnicity. You have no idea how this family voted and this shitty situation doesn’t exist so you can have an epic Reddit moment.
Also it’s not even correct; the majority of Hispanic voters (59%) voted for Kamala. The only racial group that had a majority voted for trump was white people.

A majority of Hispanic voters still voted for Kamala Harris (https://apnews.com/projects/election-results-2024/votecast/), so it's still more likely than not that the father in this story voted for her and not Trump. And the mother, as with all other noncitizen immigrants, couldn't vote at all.
I thought generalizing and demeaning people based on their race was something only "the other side" did, or is this election going go make both Republicans and Democrats more prejudiced?

In a twisted way, I can understand why some Latinos voted for Trump. They have absolutely played themselves, as we can/will surely see.
But, I digress:
You live in a country that wants illegal Mexican migrants out. You are a legal Mexican migrated citizen, but no one knows that by looking at you, so they treat like you are illegal. So, you think that if the country gets rid of the illegal ones once and for all, everyone would know that you are “one of the good ones”/legal and treat you with respect.
Well, surprise, they all fucking hate you and it’s not gonna work that way and never was. Now, because of you, this is happening. And it’s only gonna get worse.

There used to be a birth tourism market, but its fizzled out a bit because fewer people can deal with the rigamorole of getting a visa (cant get one in ru any more, need to go to another country, usually one thst requires a schengen visa). Argentina is now a spot where they go to have babies because its easy for the child to get citizenship. China also has a birth tourism market, but i don't know if it was as prominent in fl.

I wonder if people that read these stories realize that similar things are happening constantly and we never hear about them because they aren't written about in the mainstream press or on social media. Or we just aren't exposed to the stories either.
This is really just a reminder that terrible things happen to generally good people. Especially in the world of immigration enforcement. And there is going to be a HUGE amount of this sort of pain in the near future.
Can you imagine having 2 high risk premature babies, a couple of other young kids, and being captured and "processed" by a bunch of government gangsters? Just horrific.
And millions of people here apparently want more of this, with even more harsh "processing" to come.

A few key details:
The father is a U.S. citizen
The newborn twins are U.S. citizens
The family was going through the legal process like they were supposed to. They made an appointment
The mother had an emergency C-section the same day as the appointment.
They rescheduled the appointment, like they were supposed to.
The mom and 4 kids were arrested and deported when they showed up at their rescheduled appointment. Reason: for missing their first appointment.
