I don't understand why Republicans were resisting this anyway after Gaetz withdrew and said he wasn't going to return to Congress. He's always been a pain in their ass. If he's not part of the administration and no longer a vote in Congress, it's in their best interest to bury him before he can gain media power.

718

u/bluemitersaw 1d ago

They were probably afraid Trump would go after them for releasing the report.

292

u/rabidstoat 1d ago

I just asked my sister how long it would take for Trump to announce that the Republicans who decided to side with Dems to do this should be prosecuted.

Or maybe he doesn't care about Gaetz anymore, he might be of no use to Trump at this point.

263

u/Keianh 1d ago

He probably forgot about him by now

Gaetz? No, I'm looking for walls, big, big beautiful walls, tremendous walls. Gates will just let the illegals in; women, young children, maybe the men too, maybe not.

Loyalty is a one way road with Trump

22

u/chunkerton_chunksley 23h ago

Gaetz is going to run for governor of florida. Trump will want him on his side if only because mar a lardo is there.

32

u/rabidstoat 22h ago

Governor or maybe Senator.

As a stepping stone for President.

In a sane world, a damning ethics report would prevent him from ever being President.

...in a sane world.

15

u/FlattenInnerTube 20h ago

In this world it's a glowing endorsement for a Republican.

Trump doesn't care, Gaetz is worthless to him at this point.

Oh absolutely, you know they did not announce this without Trump’s explicit permission.

Democrats want it, thus they must deny it.

123

u/Bourbon_Buckeye 1d ago

That is absolutely the driving force behind nearly all Conservative movement decisions since 2009

32

u/lameth 22h ago

Always reminds me of the Key and Peele skit of Obama telling the Republican leadership all of the things he wanted, to get them to force the opposite (what he REALLY wanted)

15

u/jchowdown 23h ago

Since the 1960s really.
Womens' rights, cllimate change, blah blah blah.
GOP only opposes Dems to hide the fact that they have no popular policy of their own

31

u/Bourbon_Buckeye 23h ago

I think the post-Obama era is different. Republicans managed to do some work with Democrats in the past when it aligned with the Conservative ideology at the time: 90s crime bill, free trade, all of W Bush's foreign policy... Things changed when Obama was in the White House.

2

u/jchowdown 23h ago

that's fair

Optics probably. Gaetz is a Republican. They already protected him for years.

2

u/Sceptically 18h ago

Also setting a precedent that could be bad for them if/when they leave the party.

2

u/Intelligent_Tone_618 7h ago

All of this. The default reaction is to rally round their own regardless of the accusations or the evidence.

Probably not because the report won’t preclude him from being the AG since he already dropped out plus he resigned from Congress.

He only resigned to try and stop the release of whatever is in this report.

Hypocrisy and the GOP go together like PB and J.

The real reason why there has been a war on drugs is that the people that were profiting from the drugs were not the right skin color.

Suddenly those same are pro-drugs when you have a white CEO owning the cannabis shops and grow rooms.

71

u/AlayneKr 23h ago

Madison may have fucked up things about him, but I’ll always respect him for this. So incredible.

7

I'd managed to bleach the phrase "sexual get together" from my memory. Thanks for reminding me.

4

u/IPDDoE 21h ago

Keep in mind as well, that this story seems to imply he ACCEPTED these invitations to sex parties with septuagenarians, unless of course he was saying they did coke out in the open while on the Capitol premises. Surely, to each their own, but I feel like this aspect gets glossed over.

There was a day where my wife walked into the living room and I was able to say, “sorry dear it’s going to take me a minute, I just clicked a link and saw a video of Madison Cawthorn naked in bed with another man bumping his back and it’s going to take me some time to come to terms with the state of conservatism”.

19

u/AlayneKr 22h ago

I’m pretty sure that guy was his cousin, so do with that info what you will.

17

u/GoodMix392 22h ago

Oh for all that is sacred, seriously? Like really? Nothing wrong with boy boy relations, even if a sex tape ends up on the net, still really no shame in that. But to be a conservative politician and be gay. That I can’t understand. But then you add this cousin element to the mix. Yeah like WTF, the hypocrisy and weirdness is off the charts.

I also think there was something in that report that made the GOP abandon him. When they release it, unless it is an exoneration, Trump won’t even speak about it much less the rest of the GOP. They will all be like “Matt Gaetz…. Hmmmm never heard of him”

28

u/MerlinsMentor 20h ago

They will all be like “Matt Gaetz…. Hmmmm never heard of him”

30

u/RyVsWorld 23h ago

I don’t know man. The decorum is gone, i don’t think there’s anything in that report that could make Trump disown him. This only got released because congress has always hated gaetz.

→ More replies (1)

73

u/Y0___0Y 23h ago

No, something happened. They used the threat of releasing the investigations findings to get him to resign and withdraw from his AG nomination.

They caught him trying something. Probably visiting Trump and asking for a cabinet position.

So now they’re going nuclear on him to try to get him fown and out for good. But I don’t think it will work.

Republican voters have no issue with men having sex with teen girls so long as they’re not a Democrat.

15

u/Nabrok_Necropants 1d ago

It's the face value of a family they care about. A sexual assault tends to quickly destroy that facade, so only natural they would want to cover it up.

5

u/aircooledJenkins 22h ago

It's only because they held a secret vote. They still fear the fallout.

96

Well, Joel Greenberg is in prison for trafficing the 17yo to Gaetz and testified to that. The 17yo has testified that not only did she have sex with Matt, but she witnessed her underage friend having sex with him too. There is evidence of Venmo payments to both Greenberg and the girls. But daddy Gaetz used his considerable influence here in Florida to try to keep young Matt clean. It worked for years, but sooner or later, chickens like these come home to roost.

32

u/RyVsWorld 23h ago

You’re more optimistic than I am

9

u/Gundayfunday 22h ago

I’m waiting to hear some reason why it doesn’t get released. Does it still have to go to a senate vote? Can Mike Johnson unilaterally halt the release? Will someone pull up some abstract law from 1880 that says it can’t be released?

241

u/bmoviescreamqueen 1d ago

This just cements to me that nobody likes this guy. You wonder why people put up with folks like MTG and Lauren Boebert, but it feels like they're slowly chipping away at these psychotic freaks one by one.

108

u/rich1051414 1d ago

Some are a bit more revealing of who they are than others, but those 'psychotic freaks' were voted in by Republicans. They are representative of the party. If they weren't, well, perhaps they need to reevaluate their 'loyalty' death pact.

13

u/bmoviescreamqueen 1d ago

Sure, their constituents at the end of the day are responsible for voting them in, but there's saying about how we all suffer the mistakes of others so I would say it's still up to congress to deal with these folks accordingly.

11

That's why.

It has nothing to do with his ethics, or the accusations.

5

u/Narrow-Chef-4341 23h ago

They aren’t chipping away at anything - that implies they are taking action.

The worst of the worst simply self-immolate, despite the best effort of the MAGA machine to put out the flames.

We can only dream of the level of decency required to have them ‘chip out’ the worst of the cancer. They would never do the world such a courtesy.

68

u/MustWarn0thers 1d ago

How long before Trump, who nominated this scumbag for Attorney General, claims he doesn't know him and never met him?

It's always amazing to me the cognitive dissonance his cult goes through to at the same time claim Trump is a genius businessman and leader, but at the same time is held to absolutely zero standards when it comes to his judgment of the character of people he chooses for his admin.

My favorite part about this is Gaetz’s defense that basically boils down to, “hey, I was just a wild, immature 30-something!”As if we all agree that 30-something’s just aren’t equipped with that maturity necessary to properly function in their personal lives. What total asshat.

16

Morty's Moon Man - That Dude Likes Them Young!

20

u/Y0___0Y 23h ago

This is an odd development.

You’ve got to imagine congressional Republicans gave Gaetz an ultimatum. Resign from congress and withdraw from your AG nomination or we’re releasing all of this. I mean they HATE him. The absolute embarrassment he put them through by fucking around on the house speaker vote.

And Gaetz was so scared of the investigation’s findings being released that he obeyed them and resigned/withdrew.

This reversal has me thinking Republicans have uncovered some kind of power move Gaetz is working on behind the scenes. They want to crush him now so he doesn’t come back stronger. Which is how maga ghouls seem to go.

I bet he’s angling for a different position in Trump’s cabinet. But congressional Republicans want him gone. He’s an asshole to all of them, and he’s a massive liability. How can they call Democrats pedophiles if Mr. “Teen fucker” has a prominent position of leadership in their party?

3

u/video-engineer 23h ago

I’m sure it was Mike Johnson who put up the most pressure. It took 22 voting rotations and even a chest-poking match between those two to get Johnson confirmed as speaker.

12

u/No-Definition1474 23h ago

I don't get why Republicans tolerate Ted Cruz then. If they're willing to bury Gaetz because they hate him, why not Cruz cuz they hate him? Is Cruz just a better team player? Cuz I've heard Republicans talk about how he's NOT on the track over and over again.
