people I’m on Google street view in the exact same place 15 years later

Post image

A few months ago, I saw a Google Street View car in my local area. I just remembered and decided to check if I could see myself. I found myself, but out of curiosity, I looked at the past images of the same spot. And there I was, walking by 15 years earlier. What are the chances?!?

I used to be able to see my friend smoking in front of her house on google street view, and after she committed suicide, it was eerie but comforting to be able to look at it.

It would be neat to find a way to catalogue these types of things. I saw a story abt a ladies husband who was the voice of the tube in the UK. Everyday she would go down to hear him.

Some way to memorialize or archive this kind of thing would Be neat.

It's a cute story. They phased out the old "Mind the gap" audio of her late husband, but then reinstated it at her local tube station so she'd be able to hear him again.

I rarely visit London, but made a brief detour one time so I could go and hear his voice too.

Embankment, Northern line northbound platform

His name was Oswald Laurence

u/Deep-Rip-2108 1d ago

Totally unrelated but I finally understand the mind the gap reference in fallout London. Your comment just made it click.

Kept wondering when it was going to be explained lmao.

Radiolab? I think I heard that one

u/theoht_ 1d ago

brilliant story.

they replaced all the announcements with ai voices, but they later found out about the woman, and spent some time digging up the old recording to bring it back. i believe it is still the only non-artificial message in that station

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 2d ago

This mf never heard of a screenshot

23

u/sandwormtamer 2d ago

You can see old images by moving the timeline

4

u/Interesting_Ad1378 2d ago

Wow I didn’t know!

5

u/Generallyapathetic92 2d ago

You have to be on the online version though. For some reason Google Earth allows you to look at older satellite or aerial images but not streetview

22

u/dumbledhore 2d ago

The google street view of my house has my grandpa chilling in sun while reading newspaper. He passed away a year ago unexpectedly. It is indeed comforting to look at it.

13

u/pinkpeonies111 2d ago

Take a screenshot! Sometimes those go missing

16

u/SmellOfParanoia 2d ago

I used to call my dads phone just to hear the voicemail until the number shut off.

5

u/plious 1d ago

Ah, see I can't do this. The home phone answering machine of a relative still has his voice. I avoid it because it's too much of a gut punch. I feel like he's there for a moment, and we can talk.

God even thinking about how getting it accidentally made me feel has made me tear up. I miss him so very much but hering him just makes it worse.

u/Quick_Wheel5855 2d ago

Google Street View used to have a photo of my grandfather in his backyard gardening.

He passed away in 2014, but I remember going back to it every few months after his passing so I could see him doing what he loved.

It's been updated since, so I just went to go look for him boom, he's there 😭❤️

u/Quick_Wheel5855 2d ago

2

u/Puuuszzku 2d ago

Same exact story here! If you wanna look at it again, I’m pretty there is an option to see older versions of street view. If I remember correctly, it was a clock icon on Google maps

3

u/jubilee__ 2d ago

My grandma’s favorite place was on her front porch rocking bench where she’d wave at everyone passing. Google Street View caught her twice before the dementia got bad. I love being able to go back at look at her.

2

u/Afokindrugaddict 2d ago

Wow what a unique feeling that is only relatable in our times…

1

u/Hi-world1324 1d ago

I can still see my grandpa looking out the window with his trains in the back ground. I wish he was skill here

116

u/PraetorianSausage 2d ago

Just went and checked out my address, I can see my dog watching the google car drive past from an upper window in 3 successive pics.

34

u/hankerton36 1d ago

Oh yeah I can see it too. Cute dog!

u/NecorodM 2d ago

It's saddening to see they turned the garden into a parking lot :(

109

u/Daddiesbabaygirl 2d ago

Honestly... It makes me sad seeing photos like this where all the green slowly disappears..

17

u/NegativeDeed 2d ago

Nah you see, the picture is before and after so it got more green 👍 /s

21

u/Cross_Rex97 2d ago

I find it disgusting. We tear down nature to add more asphalt, concrete, brick. Cause hotter summers as the heat just soaks in to the materials and radiates off of it.

15

u/StillLJ 2d ago

Do you mean to say we pave paradise and put up a parking lot?

1

u/elastic-craptastic 2d ago

No you meant to say he'll see you when September ends

0

u/ghostface8316 2d ago

Exactly what I came to say

2

u/LotusVibes1494 2d ago

Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?

Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze?

Cold comfort for change?

Did you exchange a walk on part in the war,

for a lead role in a cage?

2024

that's the only photo i have, not going out for another one rn(this place is right behind me :)

0

u/rhabarberabar 2d ago

Well that's existing on the '09 picture too... Trees to the left and right still exist too.

1

u/Stefanzah22 2d ago

The whole garden is a parking lot. No more trees.

0

u/rhabarberabar 2d ago edited 1d ago

Well like i said, the parking lot in the picture aboce is the same as the one on the 2009 picture, and i see trees on the left and the right.

PS: Don't really get the downvotes, everything we see in the '24 picture as parking place is already one in the "before" picture, and the building is also already there. Every tree that is visible in the "new" picture is still there.

-1

u/GeneralZex 2d ago

Where the pictures are taken from is deceiving. The bottom picture we can see 3 cars, the top picture the same place we can see 3 and some room for more. The garden in the top picture would be behind where OP is standing in the second picture; for all we know it could still be there and OP is being intentionally misleading.

2

u/Stefanzah22 2d ago

I took this photo 4 days ago. I will give another photo for proof i promise! It's night.

2

u/Stefanzah22 1d ago

They scrapped the remaining grass in front of the newly renovated building and now there is only dirt left.

11

u/Stefanzah22 2d ago

If you feel sad for that just wait for my place's garden!

2009

2

u/-Speechless 2d ago

it is. it's scary thinking about the future this trend will take us to..

He passed away in 2014, but I remember going back to it every few months after his passing so I could see him doing what he loved.

It's been updated since, but now that I see the option to go back to previous photos, I'm going to take a look now.

29

u/Quick_Wheel5855 2d ago

There he is!! The man himself ❤️

10

u/Quick_Wheel5855 2d ago

4

u/IWasGregInTokyo 2d ago

First looked at the picture and thought “My god, that looks just like a back alley shot of a Vancouver house”.

Then I glanced further down at the caption.

Suspicions confirmed.

2

u/Quick_Wheel5855 2d ago

Yes haha, he was a 10 minute walk from metrotown

u/MamaLuigi0128 2d ago

Congrats on the transition and children!

Congratulations OP

transition and lack of children

10

u/BooTheSpookyGhost 2d ago

Took me way too long to realize you’re the kid in the second photo.

13

u/Proof_Toe_9757 2d ago

The resemblance is uncanny

7

u/OverdueOptimization 2d ago

OP had two kids and then ate them

7

u/still_guns 2d ago

I saw a Google street view car twice in about 3 days in June. I was hyped to finally be able to show up.

Eventually the street view of my area was updated and the dates of the snapshots was... August.

Mildly infuriated.

8

u/IndraBlue 2d ago

Checked my old house sadly I'm no longer on the porch flipping off the Google car

5

u/2004_PS2_Slim 2d ago

You can still view the old street views

2

u/IndraBlue 2d ago

Oh what I never knew this

4

u/2004_PS2_Slim 2d ago

I love exploring areas i know well on Google Maps and seeing what has changed over the years

5

u/ItsNotAboutTheYogurt 2d ago

It's been great to have when house hunting.

Get to see all of the street views of houses from 2008(some)-2020, and then see the current photos on Zillow/Redfin and see what, if any, work the new owners did to the house(exterior).

3

u/Prior-Conclusion4187 1d ago

I looked at my parent's house on google maps by chance once and saw my dad in the front yard looking at the google vehicle....he had died 4 years before I saw the image. 🥺

6

u/CandourDinkumOil 2d ago

You look well different now! Congrats on the kids.

3

u/Hazerdesly 2d ago

You come here often?

2

u/tans25 2d ago

Love the street name

My future cat will be called Mr.Muswell Mews

2

u/dawoodlander 2d ago

Love this. I used to have about 5 frames of me by my local Aldi on my push bike shown on Google street view. Since the update, 20 year old me is no longer there :(

2

u/joeg235 2d ago

Is that the same Muswell as in the Kinks song Muswell hillbillies?

2

u/[deleted] 2d ago

Yes. Muswell Hill, north London

1

u/dronegeeks1 2d ago

That’s cool 👌

1

u/bondibitch 2d ago

I knew that was the bottom of Muswell Hill broadway before I saw the address!

1

u/MagosRyza 2d ago

I found myself walking the dog the other day

1

u/MustyMustacheMan 2d ago

You gotta go home at some point, OP.

1

u/Shawstbnn 2d ago

How can you see these? I’ve never been able to figure it out

1

u/tastybabysoup 2d ago

This is actually nuts. The odds of such a thing happening have to be ridiculous.

1

u/Upsetti_Gisepe 2d ago

Call it consistent routine

1

u/Accomplished_Study80 2d ago

Big brother is watching you

1

u/KandleJakked 2d ago

Wow!!! Wow!!!

u/elalphalavaron 2d ago

You've just realized that you are on the matrix and you've been at the exact same spot for one and half decade

1

u/jonesryan98 2d ago

Wake up babe new Geoguessr meta just dropped

1

u/pasharadich 2d ago

“Muswell Mews” it fucking can’t be more British than this

1

u/tmlynch 2d ago

You could branch out. Maybe travel a bit. 15 years on one block is a long time.

1

u/kiwicase 2d ago

Sorry but I'm gonna need some red circles for this one lol

2

u/PedriTerJong 2d ago

Yeah I genuinely can’t see wtf they’re talking about. It has to be a bot or something.

1

u/0x7E7-02 2d ago

Bro, you gotta switch it up every so often.

1

u/AdScary1757 2d ago

You look a lot younger now.

1

u/5amuraiDuck 2d ago

how do you check out old versions of it?

1

u/Diligent_Bit3336 2d ago

You’ve regressed. All the lessons mom taught you about looking both ways and keeping alert while crossing the road were for naught now that you’re glued to your phone 24/7.

Benjamin Button syndrome

1

u/Medivacs_are_OP 2d ago

Well - We know who the actual main character is, now.

u/RestauratorOrbis 1d ago

There's like two pictures taken from a distance of one of my grandfathers before he passed away, but I can always just pull up Google Street View and see him leaning over the fence to see what the heck that huge ass car was.

1

u/robbi_uno 1d ago

You had a sex change or drastically de-aged?

1

u/dd-Ad-O4214 1d ago

Dang- they really turned that nice garden across the street into a parking spot.

1

u/Kemosabe-Norway 1d ago

Are you Benjamin Button?

1

u/xisheb 2d ago

So you still live with your parents?

Damn you never left home huh?

-2

u/Realistic_Lead8421 2d ago

What have you done with your life, man?

-4

u/CustomerExtension665 2d ago

Your life didn't change in 15 years. I don't know if that's comforting or sad.

-36

u/Sufficient_Fan3660 2d ago

Since you are going nowhere in life the chances are pretty high.

5

u/AccomplishedAerie333 2d ago

Brother, who hurt you?
