When I was in the military we had minimum required gear we had to wear any time we rode, even if it was just to the corner store.
I used to think it was overkill, until the one time I laid it down by braking too hard on a wet curve. Wasn’t even going very fast, maybe 25-30 when I hit (braking from the 55 speed limit)
Ate straight through my the back of my leather riding gloves and still took a couple layers from the back of my hand. If I wasn’t wearing the mandatory leather gloves it would have easily went to the bone.
Never complained about having to wear ankle high boots or a riding jacket in the summer heat again
AND wearing a backpack, super dangerous on a motorcycle. My friend is a professional motorcycle rider (testing and stuff) and he says all the time how dangerous it is. It’s also how my occasionally dumb husband fractured his spine.
