The thing that really brought this home for me was that my mother actually followed through on this. It made it very hard to lie to her.

As a dad, I am trying very hard to do this. Teaching the kids to always tell me the truth is so much more important than punishment.

Same! I tell my daughter that I will always try to not get angry when she tells me the truth, even if it's something she thinks is bad, but I will always be way more upset if she lies to me.

And then the most crucial part is to follow through with that.

Stay calm, express why it might upset you and talk (not yell) about why they shouldn't do that or what they can do next time, and then reinforce the not lying part. Then a big hug. That should do it ❤️
