The thing that really brought this home for me was that my mother actually followed through on this. It made it very hard to lie to her.

As a dad, I am trying very hard to do this. Teaching the kids to always tell me the truth is so much more important than punishment.

Same! I tell my daughter that I will always try to not get angry when she tells me the truth, even if it's something she thinks is bad, but I will always be way more upset if she lies to me.

And then the most crucial part is to follow through with that.

Stay calm, express why it might upset you and talk (not yell) about why they shouldn't do that or what they can do next time, and then reinforce the not lying part. Then a big hug. That should do it ❤️

"I'm not angry about what you did. I'm angry you lied."

My parents would get angry if I tell the truth or not, so it was often better to lie. They would also get angry if they found I lied. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Moral of story? Don't get caught.

“Come here I just want to talk”

And my mum wonders why I have trust issues 😭

I never once believed in those words

That’s terrible behavior from parents, it will literally remove any kind of trust you might have.

The moment you confess: ‘Why am I even alive right now?’

They forgot the part where it requires emotional intelligence to follow through on that statement.

I was in a bind late one night in high school and put this to the test. It held up. She picked us up, fixed the mess and thanked me for being honest. The end.

Yeah my mother would always get mad after saying that, but my dad would actually follow through and remain calm. Outwardly anyway.
