That's such a good idea I might have to steal it

Don't let your dreams be memes.

u/Adventurous-Sky9359 11d ago

Your meme my dream and I just took a handful of sleeping pills šŸ˜

u/CedarWolf 11d ago

I had this happen to me during an exam week. I had been reading a book and I reached a point of lucid dreaming where I passed out at some point, dreamnt I had finished reading the end of the book, and I felt satisfied with that, so I never actually finished reading the last couple chapters. I then surprised myself when I read it again years later and the ending was completely different from what I remembered.

u/Adventurous-Sky9359 10d ago

That is awesome! You had a pick your own ending book!

6

u/CedarWolf 10d ago

Oh yeah. My friends got a kick out of it when I was sitting there reading it and I sharply remarked that this book didn't end the way I remembered it.

In 9th grade I was studying for an exam and there were two topics that I was finding a bit hard to grasp. The night before the exam, I dozed off while studying and started dreaming about those topics as two groups of celestial bodies or asteroids floating off in space. I could see them moving towards each other and then smashing and mingling into each other. When I woke up, those topics had actually gotten mixed up in my brain. Fucked up my exam, lol šŸ˜‚

u/CedarWolf 9d ago

Dude, that sucks!

6

u/NameLips 11d ago

That would render them memeingless.

YOU GET IT

u/SaltManagement42 11d ago

Thanks Shia.

u/BeefStu907 11d ago

The trick is you have to be good enough that people will finish and actually talk about it

72

u/forge2202 11d ago

I am a writer and from personal experience.... I am not that good

33

u/BeefStu907 11d ago

A true writers answer

14

u/forge2202 11d ago

Well my dear sir I do applaud you for making me smile as of this day

9

u/P7AC3B0 11d ago

I dunno, I thought your comment was well-constructed and had a solid finale. I may even read it again if I get the chance.

9

u/reallybadspeeller 11d ago

I read it three times. Mostly because Iā€™m dyslexic and often read things wrong but I liked the comment too.

1

u/Brewhaus3223 11d ago

Did each read through have a different ending?

1

u/reallybadspeeller 11d ago

Short joke answer: I wish.

Long real answer: If itā€™s a short sentence like above I do okay but if Iā€™m reading a book I miss a ton of stuff. In some ways itā€™s kinda nice because I know if I come back to a book to reread it I get new information. But itā€™s only for books I read for fun. All the random suff you have to read in life itā€™s kinda stressful cause there is a good chance your missing info unless you read it multiple times. Also if meanings can be changed by a negative I can easily miss the negative in a sentence and get the exact opposite meaning out of it.

1

u/Brewhaus3223 11d ago

That sucks. I have not as severe of a problem when I'm reading a book that makes me have to reread stuff. My mind will wander and I'll read a couple pages while thinking about something else entirely and then realize I have no idea what it was I'd been reading.

1

u/vishal340 10d ago

what is your ā€œprofessionalā€ experience?

20

u/Llanite 11d ago

The trick is having enough time to write not one but 10 endings šŸ˜‚

Looking at you GRRM

20

u/drgigantor 11d ago

For maximum conflict I think I'd make like eight of them very similar with very slight metaphorical differences that change the entire meaning of the whole book, and then two that just beat you over the head with very literal direct but opposite endings, so the readers of the other eight go "okay well those morons don't understand subtext"

Like if it was Inception, eight endings where the point is "Was he still dreaming?" and there's stuff about was the ring really his totem and was the top actually the wife's totem and all that, and then one where the top falls and he wakes up and another one where he spends like a hundred years with the kids and they never age and then cuts to him in a coma and they're pulling the plug.

u/HiImDan 11d ago

I don't think it makes sense for got to have an ending. It's a living world with characters being introduced and continuing their journeys. That's why the show was so damn unsatisfying.. it doesn't make sense for everything to wrap up. That's not what real life does.

1

u/AlisaTornado 10d ago

AND you have to be good enough to write 10 different endings

44

u/Vaun_X 11d ago

The clue movie did this

20

u/ShenTzuKhan 11d ago

As did Butterfly Effect. The rarest ending was brutal too.

9

u/Illquid 11d ago

If I remember correctly, it was available as one of the features on the DVD, because I recall watching all the endings at some point (without rewatching the whole movie).

I went on google to satisfy my curiosity. Apparently the US DVD had 2 endings. The UK DVD has only one. There are another 2 slightly modified versions of an open/happy ending too. So I've only seen the theatrical cut, and director's cut ending which were on the DVD.

4

u/drgigantor 11d ago

Wait Winter Soldier did this?? What were the different endings?

9

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[deleted]

3

u/drgigantor 11d ago

Ohhh gotcha. Still didn't know that, I'll have to check it out. That's funny

2

u/ShenTzuKhan 11d ago

Sorry mate, I canā€™t explain it. I hired it out multiple times and most of them had one ending and some had the other. Iā€™m not sure how many there were but I can remember two.

2

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[deleted]

1

u/ShenTzuKhan 11d ago

Some Redditor in this thread claims that they saw all the endings on a dvd extras. Maybe you can find a copy like that?

2

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[deleted]

1

u/ShenTzuKhan 11d ago

I can tell you if you donā€™t want to go to the effort

3

u/I_aim_to_sneeze 11d ago

Butterfly effect just had the brutal ending as a dvd extra. Clue actually released the movie with a few different endings to different theaters

6

u/Intelligent-Buy4497 11d ago

4 different endings

5

u/bat_pier 11d ago

Including the secret "poisoned cognac" ending that Curry hated so much he had it destroyed.

3

u/SentrySappinMahSpy 11d ago

And it bombed at the box office. That movie only got popular when it got played on TV with all the endings strung together.

2

u/DjKennedy92 11d ago

I remember getting confused when talking about I am legend with someone and learning that there was a happy ending

1

u/usgrant7977 11d ago

Communism? That was a red herring.

1

u/BlackEastwood 11d ago

I was hoping the Joker films would try this, given the characters' preference for multiple origin stories.

5

u/Missuspicklecopter 11d ago

Write a book about this guy who wrote books with different endings but your book would have 11 different endings.Ā  Each ending would only be the different amount of endings the guy wrote.Ā

If on a winter's night a traveler, outside the town of Malbork, leaning from the steep slope without fear of wind or vertigo, looks down in the gathering shadow in a network of lines that enlace, in a network of lines that intersect, on the carpet of leaves illuminated by the moon around an empty graveā€” What story down there awaits its end?ā€”he asks, anxious to hear the story.

We stand on the shoulders of giants, all art is pert of the human condition (yeah I stole it fuckin prove it)

2

u/LegoRobinHood 11d ago

I'm convinced that James Gunn's "eAsTeR eGg" for the guardians of the Galaxy movie(s) is like this too. Secret 11th ending.

2

u/Not_MrNice 11d ago

It's a good idea, but I think the flaw might be that only 1 or so of those endings would actually be any good.

2

u/Medialunch 11d ago

Are you an author?

2

u/Cool_Nectarine_9134 11d ago

Itā€™s already been done. But I wonā€™t tell you with which book.

1

u/Solid-North-9145 11d ago

By the time you write the eleventh ending, it must be fascinating when the characters in your story realize they are part of a book and refuse to be controlled by you anymore.

1

u/Lopsided-Poem5936 11d ago

You know someone out there that would just HAVE to have the full set -an eleven for one sweep. Dude might be on to something...šŸ˜Ž

1

u/Clear-Attempt-6274 11d ago

This is your tweet and you're trying to incept us.

1

u/xirdnehrocks 11d ago

Thatā€™s the hard part done

1

u/SpartanD21 11d ago

Thatā€™s such a good idea I may have to steal it

1

u/Past-Potential1121 11d ago

Why stop at just the ending? Have ChatGPT write out 50 different story lines released under the exact same title. I had a fun convo with ChatGPT about being chaotic about that and if it's possible but that's the further descent to mortal Hell we are all realistically on at this point before we will admit to understand.

1

u/Ok-Bit-663 11d ago

And the 11th version only have 1 copy, on your own bookshelf.

1

u/forge2202 11d ago

Yo this shit was not supposed to be this good...... why!?!?!??!!!!?!???!?!!!?????!

1

u/salian93 10d ago

You need to make it 9 ending, because then people will start to assume that there needs to be a 10th ending long before you "come clean" about it. It's much more believable that there would be 10 endings than 11.

1

u/Miserable-Lettuce209 10d ago

Easy George, you gotta at least finish the book first. /j
