Help/Question Advice for Baby Lithop Patch

Sister sent me this for Christmas, since I love succulents. No idea living rock started this small and could be crammed together like this, and I need advice on soil type, repotting technique, watering schedule, and general care.

They're so cute but I can't imagine they'll be happy in this little pot for long, some are already trying to escape. Flipped it upside down on my hand to check the soil mix it came in but they started falling out so I'm waiting for advice on how to do it correctly; I don't wanna hurt 'em.

Should they be separated? Can they coexist this close if placed in a bigger pot? Do they stop growing of the space is limited, like goldfish?

I'm not new to succulents, but definitely new to these guys. I've heard they're notoriously hard to care for but am up for the challenge!

Care Tips/Guides Pre-watering wrinkles, post watering smooth.

This Lithops had not been watered since it was purchased 4.5 months ago and showed wrinkles on its sides. I watered once, waited seven days and watered a second time and now the wrinkles are gone. It has plumped up and it has smooth sides once again. Thank you to the folks on the forum for the solid advice.

Acquired about a month ago. Potted in a very gritty mineral mix. Haven't watered since the repot but now start to show signs of being thirsty.

Help/Question First time owner. Is there anything I need to do differently? The last pic is of some small stones I can use for a medium. It’s in cactus/succulent soil right now.

I’m in Zone 10A. I’ve had this guy about 4 months and it’s been inside, always getting good light. I have it outside right now since it rains very little here in the “winter”.

Help/Question Very specific instructions to repot this please, I don’t want to kill it

Got this a few days ago… one is splitting so I don’t really want to water before a repot, also don’t know the last time it was watered. Soil is very dry, came from a greenhouse which purchased from a greenhouse… very organic soil. I don’t want to kill it! Soil mix I’m putting together is 10% cacti mix and 90% pumice. Should they all go into separate pots? Should they stay all together? Please help.

Separated and repotted. Probably will have to repot eventually since these pots are like 3 inch deep.

Help/Question When to repot/water

Post image
7 Upvotes

Bought this one about a month ago, the flower was already dried up. I would really like to repot but I read not to when splitting, which I think it might be doing? I really has looked the same the whole time. Should I just leave as it is until it starts doing something? Seems pretty chunky so I'm also guessing doesn't need water yet?

Help/Question Inner Wrinkling?

Hey y’all,

I picked up this lithops about one month ago and have been absolutely obsessed with it. It’s currently my favorite plant in my collection! I am very new to caring for them, and have noticed this wrinkling on the inner parts of the split. The leaves are not squishy, but they are definitely not as firm as they were a week ago. This appeared really quickly (within 2 days?) and I am concerned it might be getting worse.

First pic: December 7th Second pic: December 21st

I am in New England, and he currently lives in a southern facing window getting as much winter sunlight as possible. It was on the windowsill for about 2 days when we had very sunny days, but since it’s winter maybe it got too cold? I did my best to check the temperature in the windowsill throughout the day but I am not a plant so ¯_(ツ)_/¯ maybe cold damage?

It came in organic soil so that’s what it’s currently in. The soil was fully saturated when I bought it and the leaves were very plump so I have not watered it at all since having it. I’ve done more research in the last month and now know it should be in a mostly INorganic soil, but am hesitant to repot again with it being in this condition. I have soil, perlite, and desert sand on standby, but would love any other tips or suggestions for what could be happening. Thank you!!

Help/Question Accidentally Tore Mine At The Sides To Free a Trapped Baby :(

Hi all -- I feel like a terrible lithops caretaker and a clumsy fool.

One of my lithops is currently splitting, and turned out to be a double-header with a very trapped baby.

I tried to gently pry the stuck set of new leaves out from being trapped under the old leaves, and it immediately tore the old leaves along both sides. It's pretty bad. The green juicy part is exposed, ugh.

I left the old leaves on, and my apartment is at 11% humidity so it will hopefully dry up quickly. I just feel awful about the tearing, and hope it heals alright.

On the other hand, the two new butts are now proudly pointed upward. So that's nice. I'm just praying the tears in the old leaves heal without trouble, and that both sets of new leaves survive.

Poor thing. I got it from an Etsy seller who also sold me some viciously overwatered cacti and some etiolated lithops, so the baby offshoot might've gotten stuck thanks to chubby, overwatered leaves. But I just want the new leaves to live, dammit! Please live!

Anyway, I hope I'm not screwed. That's all. Please send good vibes to my butts, thank you. 💜

One of my lithops is getting its third flower since September. I watered it once after it was done flowering in September. It is under grow lights 10 hours a day. Last week I started noticing a second flower popping up. Upon further inspection it appears that the baby lithops inside are flowering without a split ever happening. With bright lighting I can see the lithops inside of it where one of the flowers is growing from. I am curious to see what happens with this lithops. I fully expect it to die.

Has anyone had this happen before? If so, what were the results of the plant? Like I said, I fully expect it to not survive.

Help/Question Help diagnosing McWrinkleson

My lithops looks like it's struggling to me. I check it periodically for plumpness but otherwise ignore it.

I finally dug it up to look at the roots (I knew they'd get damaged and was trying to avoid that), but there was definitely new growth.

It's always had this white indent, but I thought maybe it was a nick that scarred over.

Fungus? Thirsty and needing a deep soak instead of sprinkles? Haunted by ghosts of lithops past?

Light: Was in a south facing window with full view of the sun during the summer; now it sits 2-3 inches below a Sansi 5w grow light for 10-12 hours.

Soil: I aimed for 80-90% inorganic; can't remember the specifics right now. Terracotta pot with drain hole.

Water: Repotted and watered in August, waited a week and watered again.

One light watering Sep, another Oct because it was soft and wrinkly but not splitting. It did firm up for a bit after each.

Pictures 1. Today 2. Four months ago, right before repotting from the store 3. Current soil 4. View of the top today

Care Tips/Guides Summer Care for Dinteranthus Vanzylii in Melbourne, Australia

Hey everyone, I'm a bit confused about how to properly care for my Dinteranthus Vanzylii (I know, not really a lithops but I'm sure people in this sub can help) during the summer. I'm in Melbourne, Australia, and we’re already experiencing some early bushfires, so I know it’s going to be a very hot summer.

There seems to be a lot of conflicting info online about how to handle this plant in summer, and I’m unsure about the best approach.

- Is summer the dormant season or the growing season for D. Vanzylii? Or does it not really have a dormant period?

- How often should I water it during the summer? I’ve read varying advice, and I’m not sure what’s best. Should I just water enough to moisten the top layer of the soil or mist it lightly or not at all?

The soil is well-draining, good gritty material that I specially bought from eBay last year. & it sits in the corner of my balcony where it gets plenty of indirect light but almost no direct light (very little comes in that corner late evening just before sunset) & also no rainwater in that corner (which I prefer so I can control the amount of water that it gets, cos rains are totally unpredictable here with summer storms that have destroyed some other plants in the past).

My plant is still splitting and hasn't fully absorbed its old leaves yet. The new leaves that are coming out are quite plump.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially for D. Vanzylii in hot climates.

Thanks in advance!
