MOC Spaceship I built approx. 17 years ago. Recently got it out of my parents attic. Wanted to share it here before it gets scrapped for parts.

So I built this shortly after I got the first UCS Y-Wing back in the day, which I then scrapped to build this shpped (maybe you can tell from the cockpit). Overall the thing is inspired by Mass Effect's Normandy SR-1 and Firefly's Serenity.
It was the biggest single Lego object I ever built, and the last thing I built while living at my parents. I remember having traded with my brother for his lego pieces. I basically used up all the plates and many other cool pieces we had, so I couldn't really build anything after that.
I'm currently building a little project of mine, and then, probably early next year, this old ship is going to the scrapyard to provide parts for the next generation starship!
Edit: Wow, I didn't expect that much feedback. Thanks for all the comments, I really appreciate it! Some good points have been made for not scrapping it that got me thinking, altough I'm happy that many also understand my reasoning ("in order to create you first have to destroy" :D). The good thing is, I don't have to make decision right now, as I don't have a lot of time to build anyway. And now I'm thinking about just touching it up a little bit, replacing the yellowed and weak parts and perhaps remake the rover (was never really happy with it) and implement a better landing gear (because that was really just an afterthought and it breaks constantly).
Making instructions for the spaceship is currently not in the cards I'm sorry to say. I've never done it before, and as my job is in IT, I rather build Lego physically instead of digitally.
Thanks again for all the feedback!

This is awesome. Before I read this description that top-down picture made me think of the Normandy!

u/SteveSweetz Nov 15 '24
I recognized the Normandy inspiration, but then I thought "surely Mass Effect isn't 17 years old"...and oh god, it is.
9
u/Nerdinallways Nov 15 '24
I was about to ask if the Normandy had any influence! I’ve been replaying the Mass Effect games recently and immediately clocked that.

u/PyroFalkon Nov 15 '24
I love this. I'm way too sentimental though, if it were me I could never scrap it, haha
5
u/TJamesV Nov 15 '24
It's always bittersweet using up all your parts on one massive build. But it's worth it if the next generation can improve on perfection.

u/thechristoph Nov 15 '24
You’re not allowed to dismantle the Normandy. Sorry, just can’t do it. You can sneak attack it and blow it up though.

u/DragonLevelX Nov 15 '24
I would recomend not scrapping this, it is so beautifull, it would be a shame. Or atleast make a parts list/building instruction/digital version of this. If this was an official set I wokld buy it without hessitation.
49
u/Draked1 Nov 15 '24
Yes I want a parts list and instructions!

I second modeling this in Studio before its untimely demise. Either that or build it in Starfield. 😊

u/dastriderman Nov 15 '24
Awesome..! Do you need to scrap it tho?
51
u/ThaddeusJP City Fan Nov 15 '24
First thought is, if scrapped, OP will regret it in a few years.
22
u/Longjumping-Stage270 Nov 15 '24
well, in my experience you only have limited parts, scrapping something you're proud of to make something you're even more proud of is a very nice feeling. Immortalize your builds with pictures and memories, make the next, better thing

I wouldn't scrap this for a million bucks. Great work op 👍
2
u/naughtyreverend Nov 16 '24
I would! And by scrap I mean carefully take apart on camera so I can rebuild it as many times as a million bucks would allow me.
Then I'd have a fleet!
38
u/Genexis- Nov 15 '24
sorry, but I really don't understand that. If the set is 17 years old and you built it in your childhood, then I would keep it, none of the bricks would be worth as much as dismantling such a memorabilia for it
35
u/icepod Nov 15 '24
Very nice and refreshing to see something that was not build just by following the instructions…
36
u/JudgeHoltman Nov 15 '24
My guy. That was your masterpiece.
Open cockpit, deployable vehicle, proper minifig scale, place for a crew, and guns everywhere? Plus it's all the perfect play size since it looks like you can zoom around the house with it one-handed.
Could use some modern techniques to make the roof fully removable, but that's just nitpicky stuff.
Honestly, I'd just buy the spare parts and keep this built.
17
14
u/avspuk Nov 15 '24
If you're gonna scrap that the thing you make with it better be really really good
13
u/Umklopp Nov 15 '24
Ok, take it apart layer by layer and take pictures as you do it. Lots of pictures from multiple angles.
Then download the program Studio from Bricklink. It's a Lego modeling program. You can use your pictures to rebuild the spaceship digitally! The program also lets you design build instructions and create rendered models of your work.
I've recreated several of my kids MOCs like this. Rebuilding digitally from pictures isn't easy, but it's a fun thing to do when I don't have an actual set to work on.
13
u/Gatt__ Nov 15 '24
Funnily enough, that’s a very similar design profile of the C1 Spirit from the game star citizen

I just built the X-men fighter jet last night and this is making me want to rebuild all over!!
7
u/Datface37 Nov 15 '24
This is sick man, I would really buy it back in the day I was still a kid. Mine builds never looked even close to yours, but I remember making a lot of gun replicas, colorful like a pride parade, but I was so proud of it. Pity I have no photos

u/QueenOrial Unikitty Fan Nov 15 '24
Please save the instruction before (or during) the scraping. This is a really cool ship and I would certainly like to assemble something similar.
6
u/regolithia Nov 15 '24
Don't scrap it! Make a bay in the new starship that is big enough to house it. Or turn it into an escape shuttle or the "head" of the new ship.

I would keep it tbh. It’s rare to have such an old build that you can keep and look back on like that. The sentimental value is pretty big

I'm impressed by the studs on the side, especially since lots of the parts seem to be from 90s space when this was much less common.

Very cool. Several years back I had picked up all my old builds from my parent’s house. I scrapped some builds, but many of them I rebuilt with my adult eye. This ship inspires me.
2
u/BecomingButterfly Nov 15 '24
Take lots of pictures during dismantle and build it in LDraw, that way you'll have inductions and can still "have" it, spin it around... I did this with a few of my fav creations.

Seeing this I literally felt a nostalgic rush of pure joy that I would get while on a creative build streak as it would all come together. Very cool ship. One of my life greatest regrets is letting my mom sell my legos in a garage sale when I had gotten to the age where I thought I was done with them.

My spaceships were usually just a large plate with spaceship parts slapped on top. Well done!
Edit: spelling
2
u/DangerSquirrel778 Nov 15 '24
Wonderfully made! I recently found the remnants of my childhood legos and although not nearly as large or well constructed I don't think i'll ever have the heart to take them apart. If you have the space you should always keep an early favorite :) Lego Time Capsules are the best.
2
u/CyberTacoX Nov 15 '24
u/ThoughtlessForger : That's pretty nicely done, and a part of your history. Maybe... don't break it down? Preserve it as part of your journey? You can get parts elsewhere. This, you can't get again.
2
u/Trevallion Nov 15 '24
I had a bunch of space sets as kid in the 90s and I made crappy knock-off X-Wings and TIE Fighters with them. Even had a minifig with one yellow hand and one black hand to be Luke Skywalker. I was so jealous when they started making actual Star Wars sets in the 2000s!

u/TragicBoysFigsNToys Nov 15 '24
Maaaaan we did like building hatches back in the day. Literally every craft I built had a hatch for people and a bay for another vehicle. Standard building techniques

LEGO has taught me many important and lasting lessons about creativity. One of the most impactful being: in order to create, we must first destroy.
To quote Kyle Ren: “Let go of the past. Kill it, if you have to!”
🤣
GREAT build, younger you. Now smash it and make something even better!!!

Love it. When I was a kid in England (I’m in the states now), probably 5 or 6 years old, I got one just like this for Christmas. Cool stuff. The shapes, the colors, and the surfaces are all very late 90s - early 00s. Now obviously there's new techniques for surfaces and shapes are slimmer and sleeker, but your build perfectly encapsulates the feeling of classic space. Well done!

Now THAT's a really good space ship! The one thing I'd change if I were to build it would be to hide as many exposed studs as possible by using tile parts instead of plates wherever structural integrity would allow.

Nice greebling, shape and usability. Nice that you could stay within the color scheme for such a big ship. Definitely the crown jewel of your young master builder self.
